Chat with Brett Okamoto

Brett Okamoto
  (1:04 PM)

Alright, Happy Wednesday everyone. This thing is a little more complicated than I was expecting but I'm a halfway intelligent guy, so I'll try to keep running as smooth as possible. First order of business, a moment of silence for JA. He was great on this chat. Best of luck to him. Now to your questions.

Nate (Woburn, MA)

Brett, before my question: LONG LIFE CHOST! He will be sprely missed on this weekly chat, but well deserved. Now that Mrs. Anik (Ken-Flo) is going back to 155, where do you see him in the pecking order? He left 145 in the Top 5. Is he Top 15 at 155? Best of luck Brett!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:06 PM)

Ken-Flo going back to 155...he is not in the top 5 right now...but that kind of has more to do with how much talent there is at 155. About every month or so, ESPN has us rank the divisions (you can see them on power rankings). I want you guys to try to rank the top 10 lightweights right now. It's extremely difficult. I got finished with one and realized I didn't have Donald Cerrone in it. Then I switched some things around and Jim Miller was out. I was like, this can't be right. People will call me a fool if I don't have these guys in the top 10. That division is stacked. Florian is probably in 10-15 range right now.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Welcome Brett! Thoughts on Rumble moving up to take on Vitor? Who are you leaning towards as of now?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:09 PM)

I think it's about time Rumble goes up. He was killing his body to make that weight and this is a guy who, it appears, likes his food between fights. However, while it's the right move for Rumble to go to 185, he's got a tough matchup against Belfort. Belfort is hands down the best striker in that division besides Anderson thinking off the top of my head. First reaction says Vitor will roll through Rumble.

Mike (Chicago)

How is Chael a #1 contender? Last 4 years he is 6-3, with all three losses by submission. Five of his wins were by decision. If he wasn't a big mouth he'd be a gate keeper.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:11 PM)

Can't agree with you on that, Mike. I can see the argument of a No. 1 contender should have a win streak of longer than 1 (which is what Sonnen is on) but it's all in how he fought Anderson the first time around. You can say what you want about the test results afterward, but the way the UFC looks at it, Sonnen fought Silva the closest anyone has since he came to the UFC and it's a blockbuster fight in terms of money.

KO (Pittsfield, MA)

Seems like Condit got completely screwed. So first he would have had a nice payday against Penn. Then he is swapped to get the title shot. Now he get no fight and loses the title shot via the Diaz leapfrog??? What gives and what is next for him?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:13 PM)

Condit did get screwed in the sense that he stepped up when the UFC needed him. Flew out to Vegas and started promoting that GSP fight immediately. Now he's second in line again. But, the fact is Diaz was in front of him and lost it due to nothing that happened inside the cage. In general, fans want to see Diaz fight GSP more than Condit. I feel bad for Condit, but you can't blame the UFC for doing what they did. Dana White said Condit will fight on the Super Bowl card, just not GSP. An obvious guess would say Jake Ellenberger, yes?

Ryan (Dallas)

Less then 2 weeks away from Cain v JDS!! This fight will not fail to deliver, I gotta take Cain 3rd TKO. Who ya got?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:15 PM)

I like the prediction. If you're going to go Cain, a third round stoppage sounds about right. I haven't made up my mind completely yet, but I actually think I'm going to lean Dos Santos. Cain's hands have improved tremendously, but there will be a big difference still between his striking and Junior's. No doubt, the best asset Cain has is endurance. Especially at heavyweight, that can win fights all itself. But I think Dos Santos will be well-trained for this fight and I'm willing to take his takedown defense against Cain.

Brandon (Memphis)

Brett, In honor of Chost I think we'll need to call you Ninja: Nice Inclusion (but) Not Jon Anik. Welcome aboard.

MMA Fan (New York)

How do you see a potential Koscheck Condit fight?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:17 PM)

I don't think that's the fight they'll make, but if it were to happen, I think I'd like Condit. More variety in his strikes. Gets taken down but has good ground game, works back to his feet. More ways to win.

J.R. (Tampa)

Welcome to the weekly MMA chat Brett. Sadly there will be much fewer jokes about man-crushes on Kenny made now.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:18 PM)

We can still make jokes on Anik and Florian's man-crush relationship. That might never get old.

Steve (NY)

I think its a mistake on GSP's part to get emotional.....he will be off his game and get caught.... Diaz def. GSP via 5th Rd. TKO....

Brett Okamoto
  (1:20 PM)

Few things on this: First off, I love talking/covering/writing about Dana White, but you can't believe everything the guy says. I'm not saying GSP wasn't emotional about what Diaz said, but it wouldn't surprise me if Dana exaggerated it just a bit for promotion sake. Second, personally I want to see some emotion out of GSP. I, like many of you, think he's grown so conservative over the last few years. Hard to criticize him for it, because he's winning, but it definitely has made him a less compelling athlete in this sport. I hope he is fired up and one reason I think everyone wants to see the fight with Diaz, is Diaz might bring some fight out of Georges for the first time in awhile.

MMA Fan (New York)

Do you agree with Mir's assessment of that Brock should be able to take Overeem down fairly easily and keep it there?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:22 PM)

Short answer: Yes. Brock will still be uncomfortable on his feet but yeah, I mean, if I'm his coach, I'm telling him, "You're a Division-I NCAA national bleeping champion in wrestling. You're telling me you can't take this guy down in 20 seconds? I want him down in 20 seconds!" And if he does that, I agree with Frank, Overeem ain't getting up.

Sam (NO)

Brett, we need to get you an insider nickname like Chost. Any suggestions?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:23 PM)

Not off the top of my head. But I'm sure someone out there can come up with a suitable one.

Andy (Vestal NY)

Rumors has it that Jon Bones Jones may move up to the Heavyweight Division to see if he can conquer Velasquez and co. Any truth to this? Also, what makes him so dominate, is it his long reach? Thanks Brett!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:24 PM)

Hey Andy, I had not heard that rumor and my guess is there is absolutely nothing to it. JJ is sooo young. Why move him up to heavy now? It doesn't make any sense. There will always be a heavyweight champion for Jones to go after when the time is right. Right now, he needs to just keep defending the title. He's only done it once. And as far as what makes him dominant, definitely the reach. The reach is a killer. But it's also that he works hard. You get his natural ability with that work ethic, this is what you get.

Steve (Warren)

Does Silva fight on the next Brazil card?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:25 PM)

Don't think so. He's still recovering from shoulder injury. They'll probably do that fight in Vegas.

Matt (Indianapolis)

How do you think Cerrone-Diaz plays out?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:27 PM)

Love this fight. Actually, after Cerrone finished Siver, I turned to ESPN colleague Chad Dundas and asked, "Who would you take in a fight between Cerrone and Diaz?" He said Cerrone, I actually leaned Diaz. To be honest, it's a 50/50 fight. Cerrone's got more firepower, but you can't count Diaz out against anyone. Very happy they made that fight. That's maybe one of the best matchups there at 155.

Haz (San Diego)

Did you see anything in Diaz's game that is a serious threat to GSP? Do you see Ben Askren as a future UFC champ. thanks and welcome to the MMA Chat.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:30 PM)

Yes. Diaz's boxing is better than GSP's. Not saying GSP is a slouch there, but Diaz throws better combinations. He hurts guys more often. He goes to the body. GSP will obviously be using the takedown and he's more athletic than maybe anyone in MMA. So Diaz will end up on his back in this fight, but he's got the most dangerous guard probably GSP has faced in this title defense run. Maybe that won't mean Diaz submits him, but at least it gets GSP moving. Makes him react to things, which gives Nick chances to get back to his feet. Cardio-wise, Nick is also the best guy GSP has fought in this run. Lot to like about Nick, actually. As far as Askren, he's got a good base, but lots of development to go still. Not ready for top UFC-caliber opponents just yet.

Brandon (Memphis)

Holy wall of text Brett Okamoto

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

Nelson/Kongo make sense to you?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:30 PM)

Sure. Haha, that better?

James (MN)

IS the fox card for Cain and JDS a one hour show?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:32 PM)

Yes. I believe so. Primetime was great, anyone watch it?

James (MN)

Brett, is BJ really done? I have not been able to read anything else disputing it. What re your thoughts. Favorite fighter of all time!!!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:33 PM)

BJ has talked about retirement before and it didn't stick. I will say, I noticed him crying as he walked out to the cage against Nick. I also heard from UFC people he was like that all week, calmly saying, "I just really don't need all this going on in my life anymore." So, does that mean he's retiring? I still think he'll come back, but it's tough to say.

Steve (NY)

I've been calling for Cerrone-Diaz for months....... can't wait for that war !!!!!

Brad (Springfield)

What is the Munoz-Leben fight going to mean for the MW division?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:34 PM)

If Munoz wins, I guess he gets pretty close to Silva fight, although that's not very marketable. Tough to see them throwing Leben at Silva again. So...I guess I don't know.

hector (chicago)

Welcome Bret!! saw ufc primetime.... jds sure seems confidant even borderline cocky???

Brett Okamoto
  (1:35 PM)

You've got to be confident in this sport. I liked his demeanor.

Steve (NY)

Diaz will take GSP out of his game..... Diaz def. GSP via 5th Rd. TKO.......

Jarric (Kansas)

People always discredit fighters unless they're in the UFC. Diaz joins UFC, beats a UFC legend, and people still discredit him because BJ is over the hill or BJ gassed. It incredible. Hoping the Fighter (Diaz) beats the Wrestler (GSP)!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:36 PM)

You're right and kinda wrong too. It's a double edge sword. Look at Overeem. Everyone is real high on Overeem because he's been fighting OUTSIDE the UFC and racked up a few titles. If he loses two fights, then what? Jorge Santiago was same way. High expectations because he didn't fight in UFC, came in and lost.

hector (chicago)

jds striking is world class but he couldnt finish big country!! give me something else brett

Brett Okamoto
  (1:37 PM)

Big Country has the most iron chin I've ever seen. Don't be shocked by a JDS KO.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Why is Jon Fitch viewed as boring when he fights the EXACT same way GSP does, and GSP is viewed as brilliant and masterful?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:39 PM)

It's a good question. GSP has the good days to go back to, when he was more exciting. Fitch has been that way ever since I can remember. GSP just does a good job of marketing himself, but yeah, personally I'm surprised he sells so many PPV fighting the way he does.

Marc T (PHX)

Munoz v Leben...does anyone really care? Especially with HW title fight coming up and Dan v Rua

Brett Okamoto
  (1:39 PM)

Definitely not much excitement surrounding that card. But...Leben is always exciting and Munoz is an up-and-comer, so it's worth watching.

Jim B. (Savage, MN)

Give us a little about yourself...wife, kids, favorite sports teams, favorite MMA fighter?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:41 PM)

Engaged...no kids...COLORADO ROCKIES!...lots of favorite fighters. Covered a few different sports, not just saying this, fighters are some of the coolest pro athletes. Plenty of humble guys, actually.

David (Spartanburg)

Over / Under: July 4 2012 for BJ's next fight?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:42 PM)

Hmmm, smart money is on the over. What kind of odds am I getting on the under?

Aaron (Fl)

What do you make of Diaz being upset about getting a title shot with GSP?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:42 PM)

Diaz is just an angry guy. Probably part of what makes him a good fighter.

Jerry (Texas)

Who are you taking Guida or B. Henderson, Im taking Henderson all the way?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:43 PM)

Me too. His performance over Jim Miller was incredible.

Matt (NYC)

What are your picks for the lackluster 138 card?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:44 PM)

Let's see here... Munoz, Pickett, Alves, Faalototo, Diabate

Andy (Vestal NY)

What does Machida have to do to defeat Bones Jones at UFC 140?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:45 PM)

Capitalize on a mistake. He can't be ultra-conservative Machida like he usually is. If he sees an opening, he has to hit it hard, move forward. Although I like this fight, if Machida plays his "lean back and wait to counter" style, I think he gets owned. If you're leaning back, no way you'll make up for that Jones reach.

MMA Fan (New York)

Who do you think gets Edgar next?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:45 PM)

Winner of Henderson, Guida.

Terry (Work)

Hioki's debut was pretty pedestrian, where do you see him in the 145 pecking order?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:46 PM)

He had a fairly difficult matchup, actually, in George Roop. Roop's not a household name, but he's a decent fighter and gets up for those big fights. Hioki belongs in UFC, but not surprised Mendes is getting the next crack at Aldo.

Brad (Toronto)

Hasn't Condit already beaten Jake? I would think there is a better fight than that rematch out there for Condit

Brett Okamoto
  (1:46 PM)

Who ya thinkin?

Terry (Work)

Think BJ should hang 'em up? He's looked pretty beatable lately, not like the killer at 155

Brett Okamoto
  (1:47 PM)

I don't want him to, because I love covering his fights. But he has reached that point of, why continue? What's left?

MMA Fan (New York)

Any early thoughts on Mendes vs Aldo?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:48 PM)

Wish Mendes had maybe 1-2 more years to prepare. Aldo looks like a pretty easy pick.

Kevin (LA)

are we overrating Diaz's chances against GSP - Diaz doesn't have one-punch power and GSP is too technical to get baited into a standing fight

Brett Okamoto
  (1:49 PM)

It's definitely possible. But like I said, Diaz is active on the ground and I think he'll be able to get up after takedowns. Will he be able to stand long enough to get his standup going? That's maybe the question.

James (MN)

Am I the only one who sees GSP VS Diaz as boring. I mean we are going to see GSP wrestle Diaz for 5 rounds and escape submission attempts. Brett how do you see the fight going?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:50 PM)

What you described is a very real possibility. Again, and for the last time I know I'm repetitive, Diaz's guard might be the difference because I don't think GSP will be able to just lay on him for 25 minutes. He'll have to react to what Diaz is doing on the ground.

rob (jersey) [via mobile]

Hello Moto. How long do you think it will take Ben Askren to show improvement with his stand up (training with Duke Roufus)?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:51 PM)

Hard to say, haven't heard much on how quickly he's picking things up. He's young and at a good camp to do it though.

David (Spartanburg)

Except for not answering my questions : ) you are off to a very strong start Brett. Is it as good for you as it is for us.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:52 PM)

Hey, first day, I'm just trying not to screw up too poorly. I've never seen the word "Chost" turn up so much in a comment feed.

Trevor (Mpls, MN)

I think BJ is back in 2012. Retirement-reschmirement...

The BMF (Stockton)

Brett, will Diaz's inability to bring in quality training partners hurt his chances in the GSP fight? El Nino may be able to imitate GSP's agressive takedowns, but Nick hasn't had to defend against a powerful wrestler in a long time. What should his plan be?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:54 PM)

It's tough to find someone who can duplicate the speed and power of a GSP takedown. You're right though, he hasn't fought a powerful wrestler in a long time. I mean, that's obvious though. He's got a good camp, they'll address it. If he loses, I don't think it will be because of problems in training camp, it will just be GSP is better.

Clark (New York City)

Thoughts on Henderson/Rua?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:54 PM)

Before big PPV, I always go back and watch previous fights of the guys on it. Haven't done that yet with Henderson/Rua, so don't know how to break it down yet. Early gut says Rua...just slightly.

Flip (Minson) [via mobile]

How big a step back is this loss for Mitrione? Disappointing effort.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:55 PM)

It's not huge, but certainly, this was the first fight coming in where we weren't like, "Mitrione wins this easily." He didn't pass his first test, basically. I wasn't disappointed in the effort. Mitrione needs more experience. He looked fairly one-dimensional in that fight.

David (Saint Louis)

If mir were to get past Nog who would you like to see him fight next? He would be on a 3 fight win streak.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:56 PM)

Not sure because lot of the other heavies already have fights. He's definitely up there though. When it looked like SF was going to die, it looked like he'd fight the winner of Cormier/Barnett. But who knows what's going on there now.

Paul B (NY, NY)

What are your thoughts on Hector Lombard (One of Chost's man crushes) and when does he face a real competitor?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:58 PM)

I am not completely sold on Lombard as Anik was. Not sure when he faces tougher competition. That Bellator division is so weak, but now with the Viacom money, they have the resources to pay Lombard to stick around. Until he fights someone worthy though, I'm not sold at all.

Andy (Vestal NY)

Edgar/Maynard 4?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:58 PM)

Hilarious.

James (MN)

Did JA give you any advise for filling his shoes? PS how much do you bench?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:58 PM)

JA went the G movie route and told me to be myself. Haven't maxed since I was 18...but I'd like to think it's up there.

Clark (New York City)

Do Dana and Barnett bury the hatchett and bring Barnett into the UFC? Who wins between Barnett and Cormier? I got Barnett based on experience.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:59 PM)

I agree, gotta take Barnett on experience and just the matchup itself. And yes, depending on what happens with SF, Barnett would be able to come to UFC.

Marc (Palatine, IL)

I think Diaz is vastly overrated and he is a coin-flip against most of the other (non-GSP) top-5 guys at 170. What do you think?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:00 PM)

Gotta disagree. He's good everywhere. He creates psychological advantages. He's a workhorse. I've got him as No. 2 welterweight in the world right now.

David (Saint Louis)

In your opinion is Donald Cerrone a future UFC Champion?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:01 PM)

Man that's difficult to say. Doesn't even sound like he wants the belt, listening to him. He came up short three times in WEC title fights. I think he's very close, but if you're asking me to bet on him holding the belt, I couldn't pull the trigger.

Ryan (NC)

How are we going to be able to see the Henderson-Guida fight? I hope it's not on Facebook. I just deleted mine ha

Brett Okamoto
  (2:01 PM)

Reopen it bro. It's on Facebook.

MMA Fan (New York)

I think Primetime would have been better if it showed more of how those guys got to be where they're at rather than their personal lives. I mean they're both great guys and all but

Brett Okamoto
  (2:02 PM)

I said the exact same thing! The family stuff got repetitive. Show some of the fights! Some people, watching that for the first time, have no idea what's been going on in the UFC.

David (Saint Louis)

Does Frank Mir have one more fight after Nog to get a title shot? Who do you see that being against?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:03 PM)

Yeah, one more and he'll get a shot (if he beats Nog). Again, most likely I see the winner of Cormier/Barnett. But not sure what's going on Strikeforce.

Clark (New York City)

Anything on the future of Strikeforce?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:03 PM)

I thought it looked dead. Right now, it looks alive. Sounds like there will be Strikeforce moving forward into 2012.

Aaron (Fl)

Is the 185 divison the worst as far as talent?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:03 PM)

Probably that or heavyweight.

Steve (DC)

so as of now you lean Diaz in the fight against GSP? Seems you think he has the advantage everywhere except wrestling.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:04 PM)

Nah I wouldn't say that. I'm just very convinced he has a legitimate shot. Gun to my head, probably still picking GSP.

Jr (Arizona)

Penn vs Florian at 155 loser retires what do you think?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:04 PM)

If it hadn't happened at UFC 101 and it hadn't been completely one-sided, I'd be all for it.

Mike (PA)

Cmon bro...Chost woulda had about 50 responses by now. Big shoes to fill....

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

I'm going I'm going.

Terry (Work)

Will Roy Nelson ever get a title shot?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

Not sure. He beat Cro Cop but if you want honesty, I didn't think he looked especially impressive doing it. He still looked like kind of the same Roy to me. And the same Roy won't quite get to a title shot.

James (MN)

Is Fox showing any other fight besides the JDS VS Cain fight. Where are we watching the rest of the card?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

Facebook.

Aaron (Fl)

Didnt Arloski KO Neloson?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:06 PM)

Yes.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Couldn't agree more about Big Country's chin! I've never seen anything like it. CHECK THAT BEARD!

Andy (Vestal NY)

UFC is goin to Network television this month! Do you think this will help the sport go mainstream and be a legitimate contender?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:07 PM)

It definitely won't hurt it as far as going mainstream. Do I agree with Dana it will someday be bigger than NFL? That seems like a stretch. But I'm excited to see how many new eyes it brings to it.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

TRT. Where do you stand on its use in combat sports?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:08 PM)

Is it that hard to figure out whether or not these guys legitimately need it or not? If they need it, then yes, fine, take it. Just seems like if there's more than maybe one guy who needs it, something doesn't seem right.

MMA Fan (New York)

Lenny Dykstra vs Jose Canseco celebrity boxing - who you got?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:09 PM)

Gotta go Dykstra.

hector (chicago)

the media still refer to cain's suspect chin via the kongo fight... but i lean the other way and was impressed by how easily he recovered.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:10 PM)

Ehhhhh...not sure how I feel about that one. Does Cain's chin worry me? No. But does it comfort me if I bet $100 on him? No.

James (MN)

Get Jon Fitch off the P4P rankings, the guy has done nothing forever.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:11 PM)

I don't have him on my pound-for-pound. I have him No. 3 at welterweight. He's great at what he does, but pound-for-pound? He arguably lost to BJ, a lightweight, with poor cardio. He shouldn't be on p4p in my opinion.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

What fight that is coming up/announced are you most looking forward to?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:11 PM)

Cerrone, Diaz.

War Machine (free and running wild)

Hola, not sure why everyone is surprised w/ Cerrone's win streak in the UFC, I think he was robbed in the first fight w/ Henderson.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:12 PM)

That's a good eye War Machine. I also scored that fight for Cerrone.

Ultimate Warrior (Parts Unknown)

Next guy to move into another weight class? Fitch, Koscheck, Penn, or Big Country?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:12 PM)

Hmmm. Out of those options, I'd go Penn, Kos, Fitch, Roy. Penn shoots up to first if he doesn't retire.

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

I think the GSP not finishing fights thing is over blown. The Kos fight should have been stopped, if Hardy was any other fighter he would have tapped 5 times, Fitch willed himself to the finish, and GSP could only see out of 1 eye for Shields.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:13 PM)

All fair points. It just doesn't seem like GSP is "trying" to finish these things though. That's probably not a fair statement because he's fighting tough guys, but that's what it looks like.

Terry (Work)

Brandon Vera washed up? Looks scared in the cage, afraid to pull the trigger...

Brett Okamoto
  (2:14 PM)

That was a tie to Eliot Marshall. The third round should have been 10-8. Vera just fought to a draw with Marshall. Not good.

Marc (Malden, MA)

If you could make any fight happen tomorrow, what would it be. Anik always said Silva/GSP. I always say Silva/Jones.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:14 PM)

Silva/Jones. No doubt.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

I thought Roop got robbed against Hioki!

Brett Okamoto
  (2:15 PM)

"Robbed" probably not the right term. But I thought he won a close fight, yeah.

David (Saint Louis)

If Cerrone beats Diaz where does that put him @155?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:15 PM)

Very high. Like one fight away I'd think.

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

Did Penn take a worse beating in the Diaz fight or the second GSP fight?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:16 PM)

Those are close. That eye was looking horrible at the end of the Diaz fight.

Marc T (PHX)

I just cant see the JDK KO. Cain has too much movement, better wrestling, better cardio, killer instinct. Frustrating me that no one is giving him his credit

Brett Okamoto
  (2:16 PM)

I haven't really gotten the sense people are overlooking Cain? If anything, I've got the feeling most are picking Cain to win...is that not the case?

Andy (Vestal NY)

Brett, last question for me!! How hard do these guys train..because I am training to become a MMA fighter at a local gym..what are these guys regiments?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:17 PM)

They beat the crap out of each other. Training is insane as I'm sure all of you can imagine, but the craziest part to me is watching them spar. They go hard and some don't like to wear headgear. You get beat up everyday.

Brandon (Memphis)

A lot is said about Diaz's cardio as an x-factor, but Diaz has only gone 5 rounds one time. GSP has been there 4-5 times and never looks drained. Whatsupwithdat?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:18 PM)

They've both got good cardio. Diaz fights at a super high pace, higher than most GSP opponents. He can keep that pace going for full 25 minutes.

A.J. (Tampa)

Cro Cop had the worst retirement party ever, being smothered by Big Countries belly.

p white (cubicle hell)

if i use mmafan from ny, steve from ny or terry from work will you anser my questions ?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:19 PM)

I don't look at the names, just the questions.

Aaron (Chicago, IL)

If Jon Fitch was Canadian, he'd be much more popular than he is now. GSP sells PPVs because a lot of them are coming from Canada.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:19 PM)

That's part of it. But GSP is big in the States too.

Rob (NJ)

is the subject of GSP and Silva done?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:20 PM)

For now, yes. And I would say chances of that fight happening are maybe....20 percent.

Brandon (Memphis)

Kongo v Mir for the title shot after Lesnar/Reem winner. I think Mir/Cain is an interesting matchup, not to mention Kongo/Reem (greek god fight) Kongo/JDS, Mir/Reem.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:20 PM)

All good fights, except Mir/Kongo. Mir destroyed him the first time.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Thoughts on Wandy vs Cung Le? I thought Le would get killed by Vitor, but actually has a chance against Wandy cuz he doesn't seem to be able to take a punch anymore

Brett Okamoto
  (2:21 PM)

Agreed. And Silva is saying he wants to fight for THIRTEEN more years? Unbelievable. My gut tells me he'll beat Le though.

John (Lakewood, CO)

Don't know how much of the undercard you saw last weekend, but overall, who impressed you the most and who disappointed you the most last saturday?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:22 PM)

Vera disappointed most. Ramsey Nijem was actually very impressive over Danny Downes.

Ed (Work)

If BJ comes back...will someone make him do it at 155?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:22 PM)

Yes, BJ would be back at 155 I got to believe.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

No chance of Bendo/Guida fight on FX or Fuel TV?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:23 PM)

Contractually, they can't. Still in business with Spike til the end of the year.

Aaron (Chicago, IL)

The Fox prelims can also be streamed at Fox.com, btw.

Flip (Minson) [via mobile]

Any word on Stann's next fight? Where does he stand after being dominated by Sonnen?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:24 PM)

Good question. Stann wowed us in a few fights but that wasn't the first time we've seen a good wrestler take him out.

Rick (OC)

Please tell me Condit and Ellenberger aren't going to fight again! I'm a huge fan of both of them and was hoping the next time they fight it would be for the belt.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:24 PM)

Nothing is official, but that fight makes a lot of sense right now. My guess is that's what'll happen.

Paul (SF, CA)

Is it possible to have a legitimate i.e. accepted Hall of Fame for MMA that is not an organ of the UFC?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:25 PM)

Someday that will happen, I believe.

Sean (Maine)

Early thoughts on Miller vs Bisping?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:25 PM)

Haven't looked back on their fights as much as I'm going to, but I like Bisping early.

Baumer (NYC)

Any interest in Fedor vs Monson?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:25 PM)

None. Sorry.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:26 PM)

One more thing on that, it doesn't even look like Fedor really wants to do this anymore. Which is the sad part.

Ainsworth (Dallas)

Brett, you like to type don't you?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:26 PM)

I do it for a living.

Brad (Springfield)

Has Tyson Griffin been cut?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:27 PM)

Doubt it. But man, how uninspiring was he this week?

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Do you train in any martial arts, yourself? I know Anik has been talking about trying BJJ for a while.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:27 PM)

I've taken boxing. Never done BJJ.

Rick (OC)

Did we see the best of Mitrione already?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:28 PM)

No. And I wish Mitrione would have gotten into this sport sooner. He held his own against Kongo, a dude with a ton more experience than him. If he had been training 10 years ago instead of 1.5 years ago, I think he'd be awesome.

Jonathan (Mass)

If Guida wins does he get a title shot? What has he done to earn it? Bad losses to Sanchez and Florian and I'm not sure why he is more exciting than Fitch.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:28 PM)

I understand your opinion on his style, but if he beats Henderson he'll get the shot. Remember, Pettis was supposed to get the next shot when he beat him.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Who's on your MMA Mt. Rushmore?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:29 PM)

Haha, interesting question. Ummm...Gracie, White, annnnnd then I don't know. Liddell probably. Possibly Fedor.

Nathan (Vancouver)

Do you think the UFC is keeping Vera around because he was robbed in the Couture fight? A win against The Natural would've meant a big pay day in his next fight. Just a thought...

Brett Okamoto
  (2:30 PM)

No. I think the UFC is keeping him around because he's a very likeable guy, still marketable (although that's debatable at this point) and has the potential. Just not living up to it.

Paul (SF, CA)

What is your philosophy concerning pound for pound rankings, do you look at skills, accomplishments, ability to move between weight classes, etc.?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:31 PM)

My philosophy has always been a p4p only exists to rank guys who won't ever fight one another. So, I say, if Dominick Cruz weighed the same as Cain Velasquez, who would win the majority of those fights? Then I rank accordingly.

Jonathan (Mass)

Don't think Cerrone would get past Maynard, do you?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:31 PM)

That's the toughest matchups for Cerrone. Wrestlers with good submission defense. I'd have to take Maynard in that fight.

Rick (OC)

What is your nationality?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:32 PM)

Dad is Japanese. Mom is German.

Mike (NY)

Who should Kenny's first fight back at 155 be with? Siver? Loser of Diaz/Cerrone?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:33 PM)

I guess they could do Siver. Melvin Guillard?

Urban Cowboy (Detroit, MI)

Instead of a nickname ... it just ought to be "Hello Moto" ... sounds uber-kewl

Marc T (PHX)

I'd say majority of likcs I've seen have JDS by KO. Cain is undefeated champ who's destroyed everyone in his path.

Jesse (Norwich CT)

Reem will be exposed as a showpiece within two fights; agree or disagree?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:34 PM)

He's going to get thrown into the best of the division immediately. So if he does lose his first few, at least it will be against good competition.

Tony S. (KY)

Have you ever talked to a fighter and said to yourself, "Wow, I really don't like this guy."? And if so who was it?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:35 PM)

Haha, I know it's happened one time. Possibly twice, but I can't remember exactly. Definitely one time and I can't say who it was.

Jon (Las Vegas (formerly Bristol))

Brett, what have you done with my chat? I am gone one week and this is what happens? Where are all the KenFlo stories and explanations of "Chost" EPIC FAIL!

Brett Okamoto
  (2:35 PM)

Sorry Jon. It's a new era.

Tai (Boise)

I dont think Donald Cerrone-Garcia's (hyphonated on purpose) mind is in the right place right now for him to be a champion... Nam Phan getting in his head. C'mon Man!!!

Brett Okamoto
  (2:36 PM)

Yeah, I thought that when he said it too. But clearly, either the UFC said the same thing or he changed his mind, because he's getting a great fight in Diaz.

Jesse (Norwich CT)

When will Forrest Griffen be himself again?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:38 PM)

The man should not fight outside of Las Vegas, for one. Two, he still is himself. He's never been a finisher-type guy, so he's putting 15-minutes of miles on his body basically every time he fights. I think he's just wearing down a little bit, but I know he's not interested in retiring.

A.J. (Tampa)

Frankie, Nick or Anderson who has the best boxing?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:38 PM)

All good in their own way. If you're saying how it relates to taking them and putting them in a boxing ring against a professional boxer, I would probably take Diaz or Frankie.

Jon Anik (UFC headquarters)

I sincerely miss all of you guys and will miss doing the weekly chat, but trust me when I say you are in great hands with Brett. He knows more about MMA than I do and is also a great friend. Please give him your weekly support as you did me! -JA

Brett Okamoto
  (2:39 PM)

Impossible to tell if that's the real JA but at least it sounds like him.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Athlete in another sport you'd most like to see in MMA is...

Brett Okamoto
  (2:39 PM)

Lebron.

Brad (Springfield)

Who do you think is most likely going to lose their title in their next fight?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:40 PM)

I guess I'd have to say Cain.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

What other sports do you cover at ESPN?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:40 PM)

Just MMA. And the occasional boxing match when there is one in Vegas and no MMA going on (which is never these days)

Carnagefhive (Harrisburg)

Down with chost ... Long Live Moto :)

Brett Okamoto
  (2:41 PM)

Ha, thanks buddy.

David (Spartanburg)

What was your first MMA experience, what drew you to the sport?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:42 PM)

Honest answer, surprised some people, my first experience was not that long ago. UFC 98 was the first one I attended in person. Covered it for local Vegas newspaper. The paper liked what I did so they started sending me to them all. Rest is history.

dko (newtown)

any word on mma live? who's the new host? is it going away?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:42 PM)

I'm not positive what direction MMA Live will be taking. Hopefully we'll have an answer for you soon. Have not heard anything about it going away.

Tony S. (KY)

I know you said the winner of Henderson-Guida is next in line but don't you think Dana would rather throw El Nino in there first?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:43 PM)

It seemed obvious to me Dana wanted Melendez in there, just from the comments he was making. But something happened in regards to the SF negotiations that made them say, we need to keep him here against Masvidal. Eventually, if Melendez keeps winning, I'm confident they'll bring him over.

Dustin (UT)

Who is next for Phil Davis?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:44 PM)

I've been talking to his camp regularly about that. He's back in the gym, training at 100 percent. Wouldn't be surprised to see them remake the Rashad fight.

Jarric (Kansas)

Whats the most outlandish MMA rumor you've heard over your years of covering the sport?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:45 PM)

Man, that's a good question and I'm sure I have an answer for you, but off the top of my head I've got nothing. I'll think about that one though and possibly have an answer for you next week.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:46 PM)

Well it's been a blast. Hope I lived up to the tradition the great CHOST started here. Follow me on twitter at @bokamotoESPN and come back next week for another chat. Thanks guys.
