Chat with Ed Hinton

Ed Hinton
  (2:02 PM)

Good afternoon, all. As usual, we're loaded with nascar questions, but let's start with a few on f1.

Greg (Rutgers University)

Mr. Hinton, in your opinion who do you regard as the greatest F1 driver of all time? Also what is your take on the Ayrton Senna Movie?

Ed Hinton
  (2:03 PM)

Very difficult to compare the eras of Fangio, Senna and Schumacher . . . My take on the Senna movie was such that I watched it four times from a preview DVD and wrote a review back in the summer. here's a link.http://espn.go.com/racing/story/_/id/6851411/formula-one-ayrton-senna-revealed-never-film-senna

Matt (NY)

Bewteen Nascar and F1 which is more difficult and which do you prefer as a "fan"?

Ed Hinton
  (2:06 PM)

I like them both for different reasons. F1 for the grace of the cars, nascar for the close racing. But nowhere does it say you HAVE to beat and bang to have a race. Actually my favorite is sports car endurance racing such as Le Mans. I get just as excited knowing the second-place car has cut the leader's margin down from 3 minutes to 2 minutes as seeing a Cup car beating on the leader's bumper.

Mike (Orlando, FL)

I don't mind the beating and banging of Martinsville, but they've gotta shorten it by 100 laps, thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:06 PM)

Not a bad idea in my book.

Turk (Mich.)

In 2010, Jamie Mac had 3 great wins and this year nothing. This year Brad has 3 wins so do you see parallels and a downfall for the #2 next season?

Ed Hinton
  (2:08 PM)

What???? Completely different drivers, different teams, different makes. No indication of any parallel whatsoever.

Ron (OH)

With all these ex-cup drivers like Reuitman, Sadler, Ragan, Hornish, Sorenson etc. flooding into Natiowide do you think trucks will be for the up and coming young drivers?

Ed Hinton
  (2:08 PM)

There's never any rhyme or reason to who gets which rides.

Bart (East Bay)

How does it sit with Knaus and Gustafson that they are getting out run by the customer car #14?

Ed Hinton
  (2:09 PM)

It's not so much a customer car as a de facto team car. Getting beat doesn't sit well with them, but not much they can complain about.

Darren (Sholow Arizona)

Mark Martin is overrated, there, someone said it! He is as sad as Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott riding around in start and park cars!

Ed Hinton
  (2:10 PM)

Aha! Anti-Martin contingent emerging!

Vernie (NJ)

When Denny won the Martinsiville truck race do you think the team owner should have come to victory lane to congratulate his driver?

Ed Hinton
  (2:10 PM)

Maybe he should have.

Roscoe (Chino, Ca.)

Back in the day there was always the same chubby guy with long hair, shades and a beard who was standing there when the winner got out of his car. Was that Eddie Gossage?

Ed Hinton
  (2:11 PM)

If the guy was red-headed, you're thinking of Bill Brodrick from UnoCal. Gossage today looks about the same as he always has.

Andrew (Kettering, Ohio)

Hey Ed, how soon do you think the Jr. new attitude, Stevie cheerleader, '12 winning races and contending for the cup stories will begin?

Ed Hinton
  (2:11 PM)

You're a season behind aren't you?

txtechjmacattack (lubbock)

hi ed, do you notice that all those fans who were so positive about mark martin and danica sharing the 3rd shr are now calling for him to retire?

Ed Hinton
  (2:12 PM)

Hadn't heard the anti-Mark stuff until the previously posted comment. That's new.

Shayne - NY [via mobile]

Who are some possible candidates to run in the third SHR car next season when Danica isn't in it?

Ed Hinton
  (2:12 PM)

I'm getting vibes they may not need a candidate . . . if they don't get sponsorship.

Blake (Belmont)

Ed, are we gonna get any great Texas moments this year like we did last year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:13 PM)

If you mean my comments, they just went up on my top 10 reasons about Texas. At the track, Gossage will make sure something goes on.

Ron (Smithville)

When tracks and NASCAR put together commercials for an upcoming race they usually highlight several wrecks that happened there in the past. But for a long stretch of this season there were few wrecks and many gas mileage races.Aren't the tracks and NASCAR setting themselves up to disappoint the fans by advertising wrecks and then not delivering on them?

Ed Hinton
  (2:14 PM)

Chris Economaki used to say, "The crowd should never leave the track having seen nearly as good a race as it THINKS it has seen. And that is the job of the track announcer."It follows that the crowd should never arrive to see nearly as good a race as it has been promised it will see. And that is the job of the track promoter. Including showing wrecks.

Blake (Belmont)

With many full time rides gone like the 6,33,4,83,etc. does this give a good opportunity for teams like the 51,71,32,etc.?

Ed Hinton
  (2:15 PM)

Maybe to pick up drivers, but the main issue is still cash, equipment, technology, etc.

Blake (Belmont)

Why is Red Bull racing Whitt some to end the season? It is sort of a waste for a team that is shutting down?

Ed Hinton
  (2:15 PM)

Maybe they're playing out some clause in some contract.

Blake (Belmont)

What races do you see Danica racing in next year on the Cup Side?

Ed Hinton
  (2:16 PM)

The big ones: Daytona, Charlotte, Talladega, plus the big markets like Chicagoland, Calfornia, etc.

Zach Cross (Church Hill TN)

Have you heard if Clint Bowyer will run any Nationwide Races for MWR in the 99 or another team next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:16 PM)

Those deals are usually secondary, coming after the Cup deal, as Nationwide opportunities present themselves along the way.

Shannon (Hampton GA.)

Ed... who are your top five for this weekend and a darkhorse?

Ed Hinton
  (2:17 PM)

How bout Gordon, Smoke, Edwards, Johnson, Bad Brad, and the Biff as the darkhorse.

Sam (Myrtle Beach)

I agree w/Jr. Short track racing is fun. Martinsville race was the best I've seen all year. The cars and barriers are now safe enough and speeds low enough to have them go at it here and bristol. NO RULE CHANGES NEEDED!!!

Ed Hinton
  (2:18 PM)

Agree they need to increase, not decrease, the number of short tracks.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Danica Patrick's Sprint Cup Series Schedule for 2012 will be Cancelled?

Ed Hinton
  (2:18 PM)

Where did THAT come from?

Mark (Iowa)

Why do track promoters/operators assume all of the fans are Christian? Some of us aren't and could do without the pre-race prayer. Your thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:19 PM)

I'm going to be the reporter here, not the commentator. I am putting your opinion out there, though.

Tyler (Greenfield, NY)

Other than running 1/2 the races at Texas, what suggestions does Eddie Gossage have for getting fans back and sponsors for the teams?

Ed Hinton
  (2:19 PM)

Running ALL the races at Texas.

Joe (OH)

I am on the bandwagon that Martin should retire with grace instead of running inferior cars at the middle of the pack.

Ed Hinton
  (2:21 PM)

Anti-Mark contingent marches on

Jamerson (Georgia)

Consider this the pro-Martin contingent emerging. I sincerely believe he will win races for MWR in the #00 car next year. Do you think the Toyota connection will also have him running a part/full-time Nationwide and/or Truck schedule for Kyle Busch Motorsports or one of the other Toyota teams?

Ed Hinton
  (2:21 PM)

I think all that remains to be worked out over weeks and weeks if not months.

Vinnie (ATL)

Do you think Alexander Rossi has a shot at getting an F1 ride? We need an American in the sport. It has been a long time since Michael Adretti's disastrous foray in F1.

Ed Hinton
  (2:23 PM)

Well, Red Bull did put Scott Speed out there with no chance. Generally speaking, the odds of an American driver going to a team that is capable of winning are slim to none. American just don't want to spend the years and years in the lesser formulas that a McLaren, Williams or Ferrari require, when they could be raking in the nascar dough.

Ron (OH)

Do you think Waltrip getting Bowyer and Mark Martin was the biggest team upgrade of silly season?

Ed Hinton
  (2:23 PM)

probably so, but that's relative.

Andy (Vestal NY)

Who do you think will win the chase?

Ed Hinton
  (2:23 PM)

Cousin Carl. Won't fall for Smoke's head games.

Tracy (CT)

You forgot one thing on your blog about Texas. Kyle taking the checkered should have been number 1!

Ed Hinton
  (2:24 PM)

Oh.

K Lee (Krispy Kreme)

If you could add any track to the schedule, what would it be?

Ed Hinton
  (2:24 PM)

iowa

Tim (Denver)

How much of a distraction will Danica create at SHR and will Ryan Newman's feelings be hurt?

Ed Hinton
  (2:25 PM)

we'll have to see, won't we? Buddy Rice sure wasn't happy back at Rahal.

Joe from VT (VT)

Would U agree that Bad Brad has had a phenomenal season, no matter what happens in these last 3 races?

Ed Hinton
  (2:25 PM)

He's had a real good one. Phenomenal? That's a strong word. It would apply if he were leading the chase right now.

Todd (Ga)

Hey Ed. I have heard people on this chats saying since the Dale Jr experiment isn't working who is the next cc, but I think Letarte has done a great job. That race team is way above last year and with just a little luck and a few more ounces of fuel he could have easily have won two or three races by now. What are your thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:26 PM)

I think they're now out of options on crew chiefs.

Riley (NJ)

If Addington quits Penske do you think Kurt will take the crew chief from the #2?

Ed Hinton
  (2:27 PM)

Not if Brad wants to keep him he won't.

Octo (Trapped in the closet)

If Logano doesn't perform in 2012, will he be in trouble?

Ed Hinton
  (2:28 PM)

Oh, hi, Octo. He may well be.

Eric (Tampa, FL)

Buddy Rice was just mad she kicked his tail for 2 years straight as teammates after he had won 3 races, including the 500 in 2004. Screw him.

Ed Hinton
  (2:28 PM)

Rice did win an Indy 500 before Danica came along.

Nelly (San Antonio)

Do you see Kasey Kahne motivating the entire HMS organization around him to win the Sprint Cup?

Ed Hinton
  (2:29 PM)

What? Kasey a rah-rah guy? Nooooooooo. He's not going to be THAT big a deal at Hendrick. Will win, but not be the leader.

Joe from VT (VT)

Do U think Jeff Gordon will ever get CLOSER to a championship again? (He was SOO close).

Ed Hinton
  (2:30 PM)

He might. He keeps surprising us every few years.

Todd (Ga)

Do you think HMS wishes that had not re-signed Mark Martin this last time and put Brad K in that 5 car? It sure seems they made a big mistake then.

Ed Hinton
  (2:30 PM)

They're not much of a look-back organization.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

Do you think with the addition of Clint and Martin that MWR could move up into SHR territory next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:30 PM)

Highly unlikely. Team performance must support the new drivers.

Snooki (Cornfield )

Do you think my Dale will ever win again?

Ed Hinton
  (2:31 PM)

Jarrett? Well, he might, if he should come out of retirement. Oh, the other Dale? Tough one.

Billy (Reno)

Kyle in all 3 races again. Thats the reason no one shows up to your track Gossage!!

Ed Hinton
  (2:32 PM)

I'll forward this message to Gossage. He'll disqualify Rowdy from all three races immediately.

Chris (Crestview, Fl.)

Does Jimmie blame Knaus for taking his eye off #48 to try to help Jr. as the reason #48 had a sub-par season?

Ed Hinton
  (2:33 PM)

No.

Tracy (CT)

Do you think champions week is in Las Vegas because that is where the Busch brothers are from?

Ed Hinton
  (2:34 PM)

Oh, absolutely. That's it. Bruton Smith and his hotel-owner buds had zero to do with it. Neither did NASCAR's tiring of NYC. It was the Busch Brothers, all right. Betcha Tom Busch, their dad, ORDERED Brian France to move to Vegas.

Octo (Trapped in the closet)

Do you think if Kryle doesn't win the championship next he should retire?

Ed Hinton
  (2:35 PM)

Oh, I sure do. He's waaaaay over the hill at 26. What is going on with you folks today?

Tracy (CT)

Does The Busch Family own Busch Beer and Busch's Baked Beans?

Ed Hinton
  (2:35 PM)

Both. Yes. That's their secret. They bought their high buck equipment and their rides.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

After hearing the 20 radio chatter, not good. Zippy does not sound very happy. I think the old coach my have been wrong.

Ed Hinton
  (2:36 PM)

Zippy put up with Smoke for those many years, so if he's not happy now the Coach may listen.

Jeremy (South Hill, VA)

I made a comment in David Newton's chat yesterday that I think Brad Keselowski, not Danica Patrick, can really save NASCAR. He is the closest thing to Dale Earnhardt in terms of that old-time personality as anyone I've seen the last 10 years, along with Tony Stewart. What are your thoughts on that, and do you think he can win consistently with Roger Penske?

Ed Hinton
  (2:37 PM)

No less an authority than the great Ken Squier believes Brad K will be huge for NASCAR.

Mark (Iowa)

How about an actual racing question, have you seen any drawings of the proposed 2013 Cup cars from any manufacturer?

Ed Hinton
  (2:38 PM)

I have not.

Todd (Ga)

If Addington leaves the 22 who in the world could they get that would want to be the crew chief for Kurt?

Ed Hinton
  (2:38 PM)

Dr. Phil?

Geri (Canada)

Mr. Hinton, you're being facetious at times today. Glad to hear the Hendrick's are healing, very scary. Do you think J. Mayfield is in denial, I don't know who is telling the truth anymore

Ed Hinton
  (2:39 PM)

I'll let the legal system play out on Mayfield.

cory (Geneva, IL)

88% of Americans say they are Christian. I think the prayers will stay for a while.

Ed Hinton
  (2:39 PM)

Equal time here.

Mike (Michigan)

How about Jimmy Spencer as Kurt's new CC?

Ed Hinton
  (2:40 PM)

Best idea I've heard today.

Jeremy (South Hill, VA)

Can Brad Keselowski win consistently with Penske? No offense to the legendary owner, but his bread and butter is clearly IndyCar. I wonder if Keselowski would be better off with, for example Richard Childress, where that kind of culture (in my opinion) can fit perfectly with Brad's personality?

Ed Hinton
  (2:40 PM)

You're probably right.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

What does Gossage think of the F1 track down the road in Austin? Has there been any progress on that?

Ed Hinton
  (2:41 PM)

He pretty much laughs at it. Read somewhere today that Bernie says there may be internal disagreement in the Austin organization. That might be Bernie's way of gaining wiggle room . . .even more than he usually takes.

Todd (Ga)

Were you joking about Rick Perry doing the "gentlemen and Tony Stewart", start your engines?

Ed Hinton
  (2:42 PM)

I was joking about Rick Perry being there. all things considered, he might helicopter in.

Ron (Smithville)

Darlington puts on a better race than many of the current tracks. We need a 2nd race there.

Ed Hinton
  (2:43 PM)

Many agree with you.

stump (MO)

Is this chat a joke today?

Ed Hinton
  (2:43 PM)

I'm trying to stabilize it.

Todd (Ga)

Do you think Rowdy Busch has the best shot of winning on the reconfigured Phoenix since he is the fastest learner like at Kentucky?

Ed Hinton
  (2:44 PM)

Maybe.

Ron (Smithville)

Props to ESPN for the side by side racing and commercials. We love it.

Ed Hinton
  (2:44 PM)

Glad it's going over well.

Tracy (CT)

Do you think Bristol should do something to honor the Busch Brothers since they have been so dominate there?

Ed Hinton
  (2:44 PM)

The Brothers Busch Grandstands. Hmmmm.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

I used to live about 5 miles from the proposed location of the Austin F1 track. So your thinking me taking 35 mph s-curves at 80mph in my mustang is the closest to F1 Austin will see?

Ed Hinton
  (2:45 PM)

Could be.

Jack (Phx, AZ)

Is EGR going to get their act in order for next year and get some freaking fast cars for Pablo & McMurray to drive?

Ed Hinton
  (2:45 PM)

Chip will try . . . within budget.

Joe (PA)

LSU or Alabama? I say Bama, 21-17

Ed Hinton
  (2:46 PM)

LSU runs wild, score no tellin', but has the Tide agitated all evening.

Ed Hinton
  (2:47 PM)

You don't think I'm geauxing to let my Miss. River upbringing influence the pick, doux you?

Sandy (NY)

What's your opinion on winning but not leading in the points. In the past I believe that consistency should pay off but something seems amiss when a guy wins 3 races and isn't leading the championship. Your thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:47 PM)

I've always thought winning should count most. As it stands now, Smoke would be the more substantive champion.

Joe from VT (VT)

Have my questions taken a turn for the worst??? My 1st 2 were posted & NONE since....(maybe 4-5 more0. The 48 was good...

Ed Hinton
  (2:48 PM)

I'm trying to spread out the posts of various questioners. The more you're posted the fewer you get later . . or at least I try.

Sandy (NY)

Who's your pick for this weekend?

Ed Hinton
  (2:49 PM)

The Biff in an upset . . sort of . . he drives Texas as well as anybody.

Ned (Pa.)

Doesn't Stewart carry too much baggage to be a NASCAR champion in the modern world?

Ed Hinton
  (2:50 PM)

He's been a champion twice and done well at it, and has dropped a lot of the gruff baggage since he became a team owner.

Keith H (Seattle)

I think the locals are a bit too hyped up today. It makes me long for the days of RAYGORDONREID (Zip Code).

Ed Hinton
  (2:50 PM)

Long time no hear from raygordonreid. anybody know his whereabouts?

Andies John (KY)

Great chat today Ed, even if people say otherwise

Ed Hinton
  (2:51 PM)

Why, thank you. Rowdy crowd we got here today.

Joe (PA)

gonna be one heck of a game, you know, unless its 38-0 at the half...

Ed Hinton
  (2:51 PM)

If it's 38-0 at the half, it'll be LSU's favor. No way Bama runs it up on this bunch from LSU.

Rita Jean (California)

I don't think Nascar needs "saving." One driver isn't holding the whole series together....certainly not her. Isn't Rusty Wallace's routine commentary is that he is in France's office one time and France says, "Nascar doesn't need you..."

Ed Hinton
  (2:52 PM)

Bill France Jr. told more than one driver that.

Joyce (DC)

Since RCR hasn't won the cup since 1994, 17 years ago, do you think that organization has become another Petty Enterprises?

Ed Hinton
  (2:53 PM)

No way. They're more up to date than that. Aggressive racing may have cost them.

Mikesportsfan (NJ)

Do you see Rowdy winning 2 of the last 3 and coming from behind to win the Cup?

Ed Hinton
  (2:54 PM)

No. I can see him winning one, but not two, and not winning the cup.

Johnny (Mobile, AL)

Assuming Brad Keselowski doesn't grab the Cup this year, how long do you think it will take Brad to get his first Cup championship.

Ed Hinton
  (2:54 PM)

I'd say within the next three years.

Basefallman (MD)

What do you think of Toyota teams expanding (KBM, MWR) while other teams like RCR and RFR are downsizing?

Ed Hinton
  (2:55 PM)

They're getting the financing from outside corporations, plus maybe Toyota's upping the ante some.

Susan (NC)

Why does Tony Stewart refuse to speak with Brad K?

Ed Hinton
  (2:55 PM)

I don't know that he does. That's all hearsay apparently based on a Marty interview. You might ask Marty on his chat.

Joe (PA)

For an actual racing question! Will Dodge stay in the sport being with basically Penske, Robby, Kes' team, and a few other backmarkers?

Ed Hinton
  (2:56 PM)

They're getting a decent presences considering their expenditures.

Ron (Smithville)

Have you noticed that Tony is winning more since he started shaving for the races?

Ed Hinton
  (2:56 PM)

I think he start shaving due to sponsorships.

Joe from VT (VT)

This is my 1st chat w/ u ed. I love it & I LOVE your humor.

Ed Hinton
  (2:57 PM)

Now see there? Not everybody thinks I'm an idiot.

Ron (Smithville)

Why so few Ford trucks?

Ed Hinton
  (2:57 PM)

Toyota and Chevy apparently give out better deals.

Ryan (Reynoldsburg,Ohio)

What are your thoughts on the whole mayfeild situation? What was he like when he raced as far as how he acted. Did any one ever have any clue? Kind of scary looking back now

Ed Hinton
  (2:58 PM)

Like I said, I'll let the legal system play out. Honestly, Jeremy was always a nice, polite guy, and I never saw any change in him while he was racing.

Ritchie (Welcome, NC)

Ed, your chats are the best at ESPN!

Ed Hinton
  (2:59 PM)

Hey, and THAT is coming from the hometown of RCR.

Ron (Smithville)

Isn't the reason JJ will not win the championship more on Chad and his several bad calls from the pits than on JJ?

Ed Hinton
  (3:01 PM)

Probably so, but the one at Martinsville, to stay out, turned out not to be a bad call. They lost the race, but they might have had no chance had they pitted.

Joe from VT (VT)

I think Jr ought to retire NOW & becoma an owner only. He is a marketing guru, etc.

Ed Hinton
  (3:01 PM)

I'll leave that one for Junior to ponder.

Ed Hinton
  (3:01 PM)

Time to go, folks. Thanks to all for stopping by.
