Former NFL QB Ryan Leaf will be here in 10 minutes or so to take your questions!
Did you get frustrated at all over all of the negative things that people said about you, knowing that they didn't know you or know what you were going through?
Definitely. It's always hard to have negative things said about you, but then again, I never really gave them too many things positive to say either.
Do you think you would have come to this intraspective place in your life if you had continued on the path you were on during your playing career?
Definitley not. I think the price of my new life was definitely my old life.
Is there anything that came from your self-examination through writing this book that was surprising in learning about yourself?
Yeah, I learned that I could write. It's a simplistic read, almost conversational. I was pleased to see that happen. The honest just seemed to flow. It was almost like I was writing a journal that mistakenly got published.
Ryan it seems honestly you were just not ready to be a pro when you got drafted. Is that the case or was it something else?
No, I think I was ready. If it was just about football, I probably would have done pretty well. Everything else that came along with it, I struggled with.
Where does the name 596 Switch come from?
It is litterally the name of the play we would have run if given those 2 seconds in the 1998 Rose Bowl.
Do you ever want to go back and talk to your 23 or 24 year old self? What would you tell him?
Of course. Hindsight is always 20/20. I'm proud of who I am now and I wouldn't be who I am now if it weren't for what I went through then, but you always wish you could have done better in the end.
Do you ever look back at any of your old radio/tiv interviews or stories? What do you think when you look at them?
I'm embarrassed by some of the TV stuff, not only when I was defensive with reporters, but when I was showing my arrogance.
Had the Colts taken you #1, how would things have been different? And how would Manning have done in SD?
I don't try to think about that stuff, because it's a total hypothetical. I think the reason the Colts have been successful is because of Peyton Manning, not because of the organization.
Do you think that there would have been any senario in which you could have succeded in the NFL? More work put in, different team to be drafted to, or just more maturity?
I believe it would have been different if I had stayed in school for my fifth and senior year.
With all that the media has said about you over the years, has it made you a stronger person?
I think so. You become pretty bullet proof, but you also understand that they're doing a job. You can't take what they say personally, because they don't know you personally.
Could you physically be a backup quarterback in the NFL today?
If I committed myself, I think I could be a backup QB. I think I could always be a backup after I got injured and realized I couldn't be a starter. But my pride got in the way. My pride could now, but I couldn't do it.
Why didn't you ever consider playing in the CFL? The vibe up there seemed more your speed.
No. Never thought about that. Certainly, with my giant overinflated ego, playing in the CFL would have been like failing.
Are you recognized out in public..if so, what are some things people say?
People are super supportive when they see me out in public. The farther I go East in the U.S. the more I get recognized because of more sports crazy the East Coast is.
What chance do you think 596 Switch would of had at being completed?
I think it would have had a good opportunity. I don't know if it would have succeeded, but I would have loved the chance for one play at the 26 against Charles Woodson and the best defense in the country for the Granddaddy of Them All.
How do you think you could have handled things differently during your NFL career?
Finding a true mentor. The biggest thing would be asking for help when I knew I was starting to struggle, I tried to take it all on myself rather than ask and show vulnerability.
Hi Ryan. What teams have impressed you so far? Also, are you a Chargers fan?
I do follow the NFL. It took me a while to get back into it, but I do follow it religiously now. Huge Packers and Steelers fan.
Thank you for all of the support. You can reach out to me @RyanDLeaf and I'd be more than happy to answer your questions if you're going through some stuff.
