Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks, welcome to the chat. It's a big fight weekend with Bute-Johnson on Showtime tomorrow night as well as Angulo-Kirkland and Quillin-McEwan on HBO plus Arreola on ESPN Deportes. And I think there was a little news about Floyd Mayweather this week as well and, of course, next week Manny Pacquiao-JM Marquez III goes down. So there's a big notebook coming, a Glen Johnson story posted and new blog coming today as well. Plenty to discuss. Let's get to it.

Juan (Riverside)

I was reading a Q&A from Robert Guererro yesterday i he was saying how much Khan is ducking him. Is that true Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Amir Khan is not ducking Robert Guerrero. That is absurd.

Kevin (Denver)

Any idea why McCall couldn't get licensed in CT?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Had a problem of some kind with his MRI.

Steve (Hartford)

Any word on what Chad Dawson will do next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Nothing whatsoever and I wouldnt expect it for awhile. Before anything, at least, will be the Cali hearing over the outcome of the fight with BHop. That hearing is Dec. 13.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Rios vs. Gamboa. Let's hope this doesn't marinate 2 long.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I suggest you read today's news story. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7189034/top-rank-considering-earlier-brandon-rios-yuriorkis-gamboa-bout

Toro (Brooklyn)

Hi Dan,Who are some of the nicest, quiet humble boxers you ever met?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Honestly, there are way, way too many to name. The fact is most of the fighters are humble, nice guys outside the ring.

david (american canyon)

Who do you like in the SAT night fight between Bute and Johnson, and will the winner face off against the Super Six champ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

As much respect as I have for Johnson, I have to go with Bute. His speed, youth, power, the hometown advantage, he has a plus on his side in every category except maybe chin.

Gary (Ft. Wayne, IN)

assuming Ismayl Sillakh wins his upcoming fight, is a title shot in the offing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Supposedly, thte wretched WBC will make him the next mandatory for Hopkins.

Steve (NYC)

What kind of fights can we expect on Versus? Any other news there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Nothing specific. But Main Events will work with other promoters to make the fights since Main Events has only a few fighters under contract. I would not be surprised at all to see, for example, Adamek's comeback on one of those shows.

Dimas (New York, NY)

Love that Rios vs. Gamboa fight. Question, who do you think Arum secretly wants to win that night: Bam Bam or Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I think Bob has been down this road before many times as far as his guys fighting each other. So since neither guy is yet an attraction I would imagine Bob's hope is for a memorable fight in which he still has a commodity with each guy afterward and that he can roll with both guys, but more so with the one who wins.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, not a bad week for a sport that is dying. I am pumped for this weekend and I am loving all of the Mayweather speculation. He may not be my favorite but he is good for boxing.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - When Floyd's team says they want the "little fella" are we sure they're not calling out Ivan Calderon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I am sure. I asked Leonard that to make sure he was asking for Pacquiao. They weren't asking for Calderon, Segura, Solis or Roman Gonzalez.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

Need an unbiased answer. True that WADA does not actually conduct testing and sample collecting themselves? Seems like everywhere ive read, the question is danced around.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

WADA oversees the rules and does not do collection. They send their approved reprs from various national doping organizations and that sort of thing. They are responsible for the rules.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Did Mayweathers 'announcement' yesterday change your opinion at all regarding if the fight with Pac will happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

No.

David (Atlanta)

Greetings Dan, if Rios beats Murray in short order and comes out healthy, do you really see the Gamboa fight coming off on 1/28? Just seems too good to be true.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

It may not go Jan 28 but Top Rank is absolutely serious about going right to that fight. So like my story said if not Jan. 28, which I agree is a little too quick, then I think we're looking at February or March. But I do not think we will be waiting around until August. The main reason is because there is simply no fight of HBO-worthiness for Gamboa to do in January at 130. It's a horrible division with no name fighters except maybe Broner and if Broner wins a belt Nov. 26 there is no chance that fight would happen anyway.

Aaron (Philly)

How can Arum complain about Mayweather picking a date & location for the Pacquiao fight when Arum did the same thing last year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Because Bob does stuff like that. He did the same thing before the Pacquiao-Margarito fight. Even had a freakin' countdown clock. It's all a big game to him sometimes.

Scott (NYC)

Please help settle a debate. Dream match at 126. Pacman-Salvador Sanchez. Who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Awesome fight. Hard tp pick. As a featherweight, Manny was all wild and not as good of a boxer as he has become. Sanchez could punch and box. I have no idea. I think if I HAD to pick, I would take Pacquiao, who has made a living of beating Mexican stars.

jcs (edmonton)

If Kirkland gets KO'd early again, which is a good possibility, does he cease being a commodity?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

On the HBO level, probably.

Flip (NYC)

I don't get it. Why was Mayweather's proclomation so newsworthy? Does it realistically do ANYTHING to make the Pac fight more likely to happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It was news because he said he is fighting May 5 and they reserved an arena. No 16-month layoff. That is news. The speculation about the Pacquiao part of the thing goes with the territory.

Tom (Sacramento)

VERY interested in Kirkland vs Angulo tomorrow night. This will be the first fight where Kirkland has actually trained for a certain fighter. Could be a new Kirkland...at least I hope so, your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I dont think an old dog changes his spots. James is who he is -- a great offensive fighter who is dynamic to watch. Same thing with Angulo. If he had a better training camp, good, he will need it against a guy like Angulo. I dont expect a "new" Kirkland. I expect a more prepared version of the exact same Kirkland we have always seen.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Who do you have for Angulo/Kirkland tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Should be a good slugfest as long as it goes, but I am going with Angulo on a KO.

Sean Mc (Meath)

Whos your pick for the Burns Katsidis fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Another interesting fight on a great fight weekend. I think somehow Katsidis finds a way to get the job done.

Andy (Texas)

Dan, Any interest in Toney/Lebedev?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I am interested to see how it goes. I want to see if Lebedev can shine against an old man who used to be great and also see if James, back at cruiser, can turn back the clock and do some damage.

Darin (KC)

RAD tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Yesssssirrrreeee.

Anthony (Jersey)

Did you hear Floyd's radio confrontation with Rude Jude?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I did listen to and enjoyed it thoroughly. That dude punked Floyd.

Tony (Las Vegas)

Hey Dan,What was more upsetting: watching round 12 of Donaire vs Narvaez or watching Skip Bayless talk about Pac-man vs Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

At least Skip is highly entertaining! His spot on First Take yesterday with Steven A. Smith was great TV.

Roy (Reno)

Is there a link to the Rude Jude interview?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

It's out there. That's how I listened. Freaks - who can find the link?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I found the link in my browser from last night: http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshhawFVuubxau5Bjp21 Worth listening to. Epic stuff. Almost as good as the interview Floyd had with the Rugged Man a couple of years ago.

jcs (edmonton)

we probably cover this every time he fights, but after reading your piece on the road warrior, it is impossible to not really appreciate Glen Johnson. the sport would definitely be better if more fighters were like him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I could not agree more.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Here is my feature on Glen Johnson: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7187730/glen-johnson-unfazed-road-good-buddy-lucian-bute

Nigel (Ohio)

Danimal, with Gamboa moving up in weight, could Juan Manual Lopez be a opponent for Donaire down the line?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Even without Gamboa moving up he could be, yes.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

By the way, the ESPN Deports coverage of the Arreola card from Mexico on Saturday night starts at 9 pm ET. Undercard bouts included.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

One other thing -- ESPN Deportes will also carry Jhonny Gonzalez's title defense from Mexico on Dec. 3.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

And I am told there's a strong chance ESPN3.com (and maybe Deportes)will have live coverage of Wladimir Klitschko-Jean Marc Mormeck on Dec. 10.

Kevin (Plymouth, MI)

I didn't realize that Stephen A Smith was such a PBF fan. Too bad you weren't debating him instead of Skip.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

We have several spirited debates between us in person. It is always fun.

Chris Mulligan (Edinburgh, Scotland)

Do you think Murray can beat Rios?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Can? Yes. Will? No.

steven (louisville )

Dan who do you have picked for the Quillin McEwan fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I like Quillin in the fight.

John (Miami)

Who is better all time Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I rate Lennox ahead of Evander. Part of the reason, obviously, is he beat him twice head-to-head (the draw was bogus as we all know).

alex (ny)

i just watched a video in which james toney says he is the #1 p4p fighter in the world. how can someone be that delusional

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I take it that you dont talk to a lot of fighters right?

Matt (LA)

Glen's been on the wrong side of close or bad decisions many, many times. Which fight was he robbed the most?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

There are a bunch. The Ottke fight was pretty bad as I recall. The Julio Gonzalez fight was pretty bad also.

Ryan (Ohio)

Recently read an article quoting Bob Arum, saying that more and more young people are attending fights which is good for the sport, from your own personal experience would you agree with this statement

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I do. I dont see a lot of older people at fights. I meeting tons of people at fights -- men, woman, different nationalities, etc... -- who are in the 20s and 30s. It's great to see.

Newt (Lake Mary, FL)

Do you think Jimmy Kimmel tramples all over Pacquiao's vocal stylings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

LOL. That was hilarious watching them sing together. I watched it this morning on my DVR. An all-time classic Pacquiao appearance.

Manuel (Tampa)

Could mayweather be talking about Bobby pacquiao??

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Ry (OH)

Will Cristobal be available on ESPN3 tomorrow night also, or Deportes only?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I believe so that it will be on ESPN3.

David (Atlanta)

has EPIX soured on boxing already?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Not at all. We have an EPIX show on Dec. 3, Povetkin and Helenius doubleheader. I will be calling those fights before I go over to MSG for the Cotto-Margarito fight.

Joe (DFW)

Do you really think Katsidis can coax Ricky Hatton out of retirement?

Ralph (Lemoore, CA)

Who do you think Robert Helenius's next opponent will be? Is he ready for the Top 10 or should he still be fighting prospects like Tyson Fury or Francesco Pianetta?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

His opponent is still TBA as far as I know.

Nigel (Ohio)

Could winner of Cloud/Eredi be next in line for Bute if he beats Johnson or Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Doubtful.

Aaron (MA)

will there be a FNF in 2012 now that Doug Loughrey has left ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Two things -- YES there will be FNF in 2012. 100%. And 2, Doug has not left ESPN. He is simply moving to a different job at the company.

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

Only one fight on the Showtime broadcast tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Two.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Any thoughts on this Hernandez character in JMM's camp? Is too much muscle bad for Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Obvuiously, with his background it's pretty questionable.

Jordan (Cupertino, CA)

Dan, when voting for the Hall of Fame, do you give more credit to a fighter who may have some bogus losses based on bad judges decisions? Specifically I'm speaking of Gerry Penalosa, who lost many controversial decisions fighting at his opponent's home country.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I would say that is PART of the equation.

ron (bethel, ct)

Angulo vs kirkland!! I can't wait!! do you forsee this as a 2 or 3 round fight max or do you think kirkland can actually do what he was saying in his chat the other day and actually use some head movement and pick his shots.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I think we will them come straight ahead. James isn't going to "box" anyone.

Tony (Syracuse)

How many fights can we expect to be on Versus next year? Is it weekly like FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

The new Versus deal is for at least 6 cards to start. I am not yet sure if they are monthly, weekly or what.

Jake (Galveston, TX)

Does Anyone worry that the radio interviewer will make Floyd NOT wanna fight Pacman...that arguement was harsh, and at a starpower press conference Floyd said when people call him scared, all it does is push the fight farther and farther away, "Cuz Im just not gonna wanna fight em"

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Floyd will do what he wants to do. His career will have a giant empty place in it if he never fights Manny (and same for Manny). For the rest of time, people will remember that he didn't fight Manny and not for the fights he did have.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Floyd will do what he wants to do. His career will have a giant empty place in it if he never fights Manny (and same for Manny). For the rest of time, people will remember that he didn't fight Manny and not for the fights he did have.

Steve (NYC)

Any news on more ESPN boxing because of the lockout?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

It's unlikely at this point there would be additional boxing due to the lockout this fall. If it extends into next year I suppose it is possible we could see some additional cards.

Scott (NYC)

Wait, Hernandez with JMM is questionable, and no one says two words about Victor Conte with Donaire????????????

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Excuse me? I think we've ALL said that was also questionable.

Joe (PA)

When is Larry Merchant's next HBO fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Dec. 10 with Khan-Peterson as far I know.

Kevin (MIlwaukee)

Notebook today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, should be posteds shortly.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

At least the guy made JJM stop drinking his own urine.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

LOL

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Here's the link for Lebedev-Toney: http://www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/89863/1/watch-denis-lebedev-vs-james-toney.html

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Toney is coming to the ring.

Dean (Oakland)

If Mormeck beats Klitschko, will he become the first African-American heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Are you actually asking this?

Tom (Sacramento)

You tweeted about a HBO meeting the other night and the new series, anything you can say about those meetings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

They were meeting to discuss a lot of things about the show but nothing specific or newsworthy.

Justin (Seattle)

Either Dean is telling a joke or he is desperate to be fed to Banishment.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

That may rank as the dumbest question ever or at least since Bing's prime.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat Email: ESPN3.com WILL carry Klitschko-Mormeck live at 5 pm ET Dec. 10.

Berndawg (CHI)

Thanks for the link, long way from Davenport, Iowa over 20 years ago when Toney knocked out Michael Nunn.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG way.

Chris O. (The Bing, NY)

Dean (Oakland): So much wrong with that comment. Too much in fact, put him on timeout or something.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

The Freaks believe he should be banned. I am not going to ban him because I just feel sorry for him.

Justin (Seattle)

After tweeting the 5/5 Mayweather news, how many, "Is he fighting Larry Merchant?" jokes did you receive?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

A lot.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

HBO needs to make a weekly boxing news/info show like the NFL has. It could have Jim Lampley hosting, Kellerman, Emmanuel, Merchant and of course Dan Rafa with the inside scoop.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Glad you mentioned that. I will drop a scoop right here to the Fight Freaks. Lampley WILL be hosting a boxing news/talk/analysis show on HBO beginning in 2012. Exact date TBA. It will start as quarterly and could expand if it's a success. How's that for some good news?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I gotta get a hat like Lebedev wears.

Mark (NYC)

Has Yaegashi vs. Porpramook moved into the pole position for Fight of the Year? It really was exceptionally violent.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It's wayyyy up there for sure.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Anthems now for Lebedev-Toney. I am multitasking.

jcs (edmonton)

If Kirkland beats Angulo, will he be the first Ukrainian-Jew to beat Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

EPIC.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - Do you think Hershman has a role in the Gamboa-Rios fight being moved ahead sooner?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

No. I think that when HBO and Top Rank looked at the available guys at 130 they saw the division stunk and it was not worth spending 10 cents for Gamboa to crush any of them. The fight is being moved up because of Gamboa and the lack of 130 opponents. And since he and his team are fine with going right to 135 why not?

Richard (London)

When Pongsaklek Wongjongkam retires, will he be the first Norwegian to enter the Hall of fame???

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

OK, let's not let this get out of control.

The Freaks (Parts Unknown)

A Lampley boxing news/talk/analysis show on HBO? BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG. How do you like that? BANG BANG.

Brian (DC)

The reason there's no weekly news show on HBO is that HBO doesn't make an effort to "cover" boxing. They merely air boxing telecasts. If they were interested in covering the sport, they would have let their announcers mention the Super Six, for example.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

They have mentioned the tournament and this new show will allow the network to "cover" boxing besides just the fights they televise.

Kevin (Denver)

Is Hershman permitted to make any decisions @ HBO right now? I assume he has some sort of non-compete clause until 1/9/12...

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Correct. My understanding is he is simply chillin' until Jan. 9. On Jan. 9, there's a new sheriff in town.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Lebedev-Toney is now under way.

Roy (Reno)

Spotted Koysta!

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

He trains Lebedev.

Stev (Hartford)

When will Berto Bailey happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

It's supposed to happen I believe by the end of February. Good luck with that.

AL M (NYC)

I'm planning on checking out your brother-in-laws new place tonight, will i get a discounted grilled cheese if I say the King Freak sent me?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Nice. Tell him I sent you and maybe they will be nice and give a discount!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Lebedev wins that opening round.

Tim (DC)

Dan, I assume given the personalities involved that Todd duBoef would have to take the lead in negotiating a Mayweather fight. It makes me wonder if we are approaching a point where Arum starts becoming the crazy old figurehead-type with duBoef being the real player behind the scenes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Bob is not a figurehead (although a little crazy) but Todfd is already handling a lot of the major stuff.

Chase (Dallas)

Whats goin on in the Toney fight Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Round 2 just started.

Wilkie (Toronto)

Who would you rather take a punch from: Paulie Malignaggi or Ann Wolfe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Paulie.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Toney's legs look bad.

David (Atlanta)

what's with the irrelevant undercard fight Showtime picked up tomorrow? Why? Is it to cut into HBO's viewers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Not a clue. I have no real interest in that bout.

hectorconga (NYC)

Tweeting about the Lebedev-Toney fight and chatting at the same time...You're a beast!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I'm multitaskin'!

Mark (WI)

Can you ask Michael Woods to stop tweeting about Occupy Wallstreet on the boxing page? Thanks Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Tweet at him yourself.

C.M. (Toronto)

Fair to say that, stylistically, Rios-Gamboa is our modern day Chavez-Taylor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Interesting to compare them.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Rd 3 is under way.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

You should pay MORE for the grilled cheese, from all the free info you've gotten from king Freak!

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I like it. And so will my brother-in-law and his new business.

Michael (San Jose, CA)

What's the Love Child been up to lately?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I would imagine we will see him back on an Versus fight with the new series.

Chris (Boston)

What is the chance of Saureland, Frank Warren, & more European promoters getting fights on HBO with Ken Hershman at the helm?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

They have relationships, so it wouldn't shock me but Ken will also have more money to buy US fights too.

Steve (Kansas)

Toney looks horrid this round, this is gonna end fast.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

He really does. Toney is totally shot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Notebook is up: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7189064/alfredo-angulo-james-kirkland-promises-action-intrigue

hectorconga (NYC)

Dan what was the most bizarre thing that you have witnessed in Boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Wow, I've seen a lot of crazy stuff. I saw Mike Tyson bite Lennox's leg at a press conference that never actually happened. There are so many things.

Adam (PA)

Do you think WealthTV could become somewhat of a player in the boxing scene if their DKP cards come off well?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I doubt it. The network is not in enough homes.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Only good thing for Toney is that McGirt will be willing to toss in the towel if he continues to get beaten on.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Good point.

Sean Mc (Meath)

Bet the "Klitschko sisters" are shakin in there boots rite now

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

LOL. They would put Toney in a coffin.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Can't blelive it, but RJJ looked more competitive than Toney with Ledbedev.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Good point. You are so right.

Chris (NJ)

Is Joshua Clottey alive?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Yes, and he has a fight coming up. Check out the ESPN.com fight sked.

Nigel (Ohio)

Dan do you know of any U.S. television for Burns/Kastidis?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

There is none.

pong (thai)

this is sad retire james

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

It is pathetic.

Richard (London)

James Toney is one of my all time favorite fighters. He is a complete legend, but this is so sad to watch.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

It like watching a corpse. Has Toney landed a single punch of consequence? He isn't landing, he has no snap, no balance and no legs. No nothing.

Aaron (MI)

Dan, based on what you are seeing, would Toney last 3 rounds with either Klitcsko brother?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

He would probably last three rounds just on heart and guile but he would lose every second.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Thru 5 Lebedev by shutout. Easy.

Chad (Japan)

Forget about the Toney-Ledbedev fight, How about them ring girls?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Now they are lookin' good!

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Keep in mind that the horrific and disgusting WBA sanctioned this mismatch for an interim title.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Maybe after this wreck we will see Roy Jones-James Toney II!!!!

Mark (Chicago)

The ring girl would probably have a better shot than Toney at this point.

Roy (Reno)

This is difficult to watch. He is floundering around the ring.

Bo (NYC)

Dan, I understand both Rios and Gamboa will get paid a decent amount. But do you really see Yuriorkis having any chance against Rios?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

He has speed and massive experience and is also a sharp puncher. I dont think him moving up is such a big deal. He can fight and he fought the early fights of his career at 130 and then went down.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

After six, Lebdev by easy shutout. I wish he'd press the action and try to get Toney outta there.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

The ring girl's legs are much better than Toney's!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Toney is stumbling around. He looks like a drunk outside Penn Station in NYC.

Jack (London)

How about Toney-Holyfield II?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Ouch. Holyfield would beat him this time.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

Jones-Toney II??!?!? You did not just say that.....you were hacked. HA

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Sorry, my bad for even thinking it.

Patrick (NJ)

What do you think is Gamboa's ultimate weight ceiling? Do you think he could someday go up to 140?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

With his skills and smarts and speed, I could see that. But no higher.

Sean Mc (Meath)

toney's legs make Odlanier Solis's look pretty solid

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

You know, Dan, you would threaten banishment to a freak for that Jones-Toney II comment.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

You're right. But this is my chat.

Peter (Portland, OR)

Who does Lebenev go after next? Tarver?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Michael Spinks maybe?

Steve (Kansas)

Jones-Toney II, Winner AND Loser retires!

bk don (Brooklyn)

I hear Virgil Hill is looking for a fight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I hung out a little with Iran Barkley in NYC at the hotel before the Donaire-Narvaez fight. He would take the fight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Lebedev just hurt James in the eighth round. This has to end soon.

Evander Holyfield (Atlanta)

Looks like Toney should be on next season's Dancing with the Stars!

David (chico ca)

Dan when does Cotto vs Marg 24/7 start?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Not sure of the date yet. Not sure if it's 3 parts or 4 parts.

David Haye (on his couch)

James Toney keeps ducking me!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Awesome.

Matt (LA)

HBO said 2 part series for Cotto vs Marg in a preview.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

There ya go.

Jeremiah (State College)

Last night, Pacquiao said he was willing to do a winner take all fight with Mayweather. Any chance Floyd would agree to that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

No and neither would Pacquiao no matter what he said on the Kimmel show.

Peter (Portland, OR)

Loved a prime Iran Barkley. Win or lose it was always a good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

You are right about that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

One of the announcers just said, "It's making for uncomfortable viewing" as Lebedev is beating the living hell out of Toney in rd 9.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Buddy McGirt should stop this in the corner right now.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Do you think the Mayweather camp was serious about going after Pacquiao or do you think it was just to put Floyd back in the spotlight like he always does before a Pacquaio fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I really don't know. I don't read Floyd's mind.

Steve (Kansas)

Were you as devastated as I was when Marquez said he doesn't drink his own piss anymore on last Saturday's 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I was depressed.

Mike (Colorado Springs)

These announcers are great. The line about Lebedev being too respectful was spot on

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

You're right. They are saying what I am thinking.

James (San Diego)

Soo whats the deal with Jalen Rose talking about being on Top rank and HBO broadcasts??

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

He is going to work on stuff like the weigh in and some other stuff from Top Rank during the week next week at the Pacquiao-Marquez fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

10 rounds in the books and Lebedev up 10-0 easily.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

This is how brain damage happens. It doesn't happen on a KO1 or 2. It happens over 10, 12 rounds of a sustained beating.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

This is starting to remind me of Klitschko-Briggs.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

Jalen Rose is great behind the mic. Looking foward to him working with Top rank.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Jalen's a cool dude and definitely a boxing fan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Jalen's a cool dude and definitely a boxing fan.

R! (Bay Area)

James Toney in this fight, the definition of punch drunk. Ugly

matt (kingston,ny)

i believe these chats have the same brain damaging effects

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I am so disgusted with boxing right now watching this disgrace.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Love that Freddie Roach joined twitter and is already pretty active on it, actually tweets things worth reading

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Agreed. And that is really him -- @freddieroach

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Why even have a referee when he wont stop it?

Berndawg (CHI)

I concur with you about Toney, one of my all-times favorites--it's been a very sad hour--

daniel (wilmington,ca)

This reminds me of that one Angulo fight when Jim Lampley was screaming for the fight to be stopped.

Rick (San Diego)

This Toney thing is almost as bad as having to watch Ali-Holmes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Worse than watching Larry Donald-Evander Holyfield.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Worse than Pacquiao-De La Hoya.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Toney makes final bell and loses every round.

NCJ (KCMO)

Wait did you say the WBA sanctioned this for an interim title?!?!?!? The WBA is disgusting.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Lebedev wins the decision. Didn't understand the scores in Russian.

Matt (LA)

Not watching the fight, but reading all of your comments makes me sad. I can't even imagine an inept, beat-up James Toney

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

It was absolutely pathetic. Not a sports event. Just public violence and abuse.

Teryy (Santa Fe Springs)

This is what hurts the sweet science.......

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Agreed.

Petr (San Francisco, CA)

120-108 3x

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

The WBA should be distgusted with itself for having this match....oh wait I forgot I was referring to a sactioning body within boxing!!! They have no morals!!!!

Peter (Portland, OR)

A sad day for boxing today. Hopefully this forces Toney to retire. Doubt it, but hope so.

Keith H (Seattle)

I hope this is the last time we see James Toney fighting. That was uncomfortable to watch.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Shame on Buddy McGirt. Shame on him.

Dan (New Jersey)

Well this weekend of boxing can only go uphill from here.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

The silver lining!

Mike (Los Angeles)

Did Tony need the money?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Yes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

James doing an interview now. Says he's "good. I feel good."

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

"I will see him again, trust me." -- James. I am not sure if I should laugh or cry.

Richard (London UK)

Im 24 years old, so I think I really understand now what my older peers went through watching Ali-Holmes. Toney, once my favourite fighter. I'm seriously depressed.

Gilberto Mendoza (Panama City)

We'd be happy to sanction Maidana vs Meldrick Taylor, for a small fee, of course.

David (Atlanta)

Dan doesn't realize Sergio Mora is fighting tonight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I do. Dont remind me.

Matt (LA)

Have you ever read the vitriolic comments aimed at you in the message boards below the chat. Don't they understand that you are paid for your opinion about boxing? Somtimes they'll agree. Sometimes they won't Why do people get personally offended by what you write? Ridiculous.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Dont know, dont care.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Dont know, dont care.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Here's today's blog: http://espn.go.com/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/7189574/now-healthy-kid-chocolate-peter-quillin-ready-roll

Steven (Rialto)

Whats up with Humberto Soto? Would like to see him fight Maidana.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I'm not sure. I have to ask Golden Boy what the plan is but a fight with Maidana would be OK.

Erik (Atlanta Ga)

That was a joke McGirt is disguisting for letting that fight continue

Ken (ca.)

Any inside info on Jermaine Taylor and his health? I know he is fighting soon, just wondering if he's in shape and ready to go.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

By all accounts he is doing fine. He went through a ton of tests from major clinics and was cleared. He is also back in the 160 division. He fights Dec. 30.

Kevin (Plymouth, MI)

Despite the bad fight, it was awesome having the chat during an actual fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I did not plan that. I got a good link to a stream and off we went. I actually thought the bout was going to start later than it did.

Matt (LA)

What do you make of Ellerbe calling Pac "little fella"? Does he realize how dumb and immature he sounds?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It is what it is. I find it a bit amusing.

Alex (Concord)

Whom is more shot; toney or Mosely?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Toney x 10.

Jose (SF, CA)

Dan, did anyone from the Mayweather camp actually name pacquiao by name or did they just imply it's who they're after for the May fight next year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

When I spoke to Ellerbe he did not say Manny's name. He said Little Fella. I said are you talking about Manny? He said of course.

Jim (WI)

Who is the best fighter you ever saw while they were in their prime? Roy Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

In no order, Jones, Mayweather, Pacquiao.

abel (texas)

what is kirkland most important defensive tactic to win tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

His offense is his defense. Throw, throw, throw.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan, that Dec 31 is becoming a pretty good boxing night. I actually like the Lemieux-Alcine / Pryor-Stevenson card. Will that make it to TV in the U.S.?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

No US TV but might be on ESPN.com.

steven (louisville )

dan who will deontay wilder be fighting tommorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Check the sked.

Jason (Gainesville, VA)

Dan, have you ever seen Angulo hurt in a fight? Was Cintron able to hurt him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Not that I can recall. He seems to have a great chin.

Mike (DC)

Do you think Vitali vs Valuev will get made?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Possibly.

MLB (IA)

Heads up to all the freaks with Directv. Tons of boxing on the Spanish add-on package every week. WAPA, TyC, ESPN Deportes, Telefutura, Telemundo, Azteca America, Fox Deportes all show boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

My cable system just added WAPA!!

Mike (Hillsboro, OR)

I did'nt realize how good the Bee Gees really were until I heard Kimmel and Pacqioau sing 'How deep is your love'.

Bob (Rhode Island)

Dan, any idea if the Klitschko documentary will be released in more areas of the US?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Not sure. I know they have released in some big cities, but if it gains wider release I would imagine it would wind up only in art house kind of theaters where other documentaries play.

Bob Arum (LALA-LAND)

Im letting the pacquiao vs mayweather fight marinate

Fenster (LBI NJ)

Thank you soooo much for providing that link about Floyd and the radio host. He needed to hear the truth. He has ducked Manny. He is sensative. You made my day Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

It was at the very least an entertaining "interview."

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

OK Freaks, thanks for chatting. Enjoy the huge boxing weekend. Check out the notebook, blog, news stories, etc... Remember to join me for RAD tomorrow night after the fights!! Have a great weekend. Peace.
