Chat with Bryan Broaddus

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:01 PM)

Good morning or afternoon...hope everyone is well...lets get started...but before I do, just wanted to let you know that I have studied the defense first this morning and will work on the offense after this chat...but full report of both on ESPN Dallas on Tuesday...

Ian (Atl, GA)

Based on film, what is the problem with the run defense?? Is the absence of Sean Lee really that much of a difference?? Has an undersized Ratliff been doubled more??

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:03 PM)

Ratliff has seen his share of the double teams, he was singled blocked some as well. The biggest problems that I have seen came with the DEs last week and this week. Hatcher played better, Coleman and Spears not as much. Church and Carter were out of position on two long runs.

Matt (Toronto)

Has Murray firmly entrenched himself as the #1 back? It should be hard for them to put Felix ahead of him once healthy... Your thoughts? Thanks for the chat!

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:05 PM)

Thanks for checking in...I feel like that Murray does deserve the opportunity to start. His vision has gotten much better each game. The physical style has been good too. The fact that he didnt have a training camp hurt him but he is making up for lost time.

Shawn (Ashe County, NC)

Bryan, Thanks for taking my question. What is happening with Dex Bryant in the second half of the game. He seems to do well in the first half but falls short during the second.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:07 PM)

I have not studied the offensive side of the ball yet but I know when Bryant struggles, its usually when he faces press coverage and he has to fight for space but promise to have a good answer for you in my Scout's Eye on Tuesday

Jon (McKinney)

How is it that a highly conditioned athlete like Miles Austin has so much trouble with the hamstrings? I was excited to see Romo look his way early and then boom, there goes the OTHER hamstring. We looking at another 2-3 week+ stretch here, maybe Thanksgiving game or so? Thanks a lot BB.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:08 PM)

Austin has very low body fat, muscles are tightly wound much like a track athlete. I do believe that you are looking at another two to three weeks but the problem with this injury is that it is a different leg.

Big Kahuna (Hawaii)

What has helped the Cowboys running game the most Holland, Fiammetta, opponents D, or Murray?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:09 PM)

Murray has helped a great deal and Fiammetta has done a nice job as well. Holland has been decent but still has problems hitting the moving target when pulling.

Jason (Nashville)

Why is it so difficult for Garrett to say that Murray is the starter? Jones has NEVER been healthy for very long, and even if he is, he doesn't run tough.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:12 PM)

I believe that its getting difficult for Garrett to even say that now. I don't quite understand it myself because I have never heard him say that a starter doesnt lose his job because of injury. Murray should be the starter, no doubt in my book.

Big Kahuna (Hawaii)

Cowboys 1st round pick with all grades being equal who do you take OL, CB, or DE?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:14 PM)

When you say OL, I hope you mean a center than a guard...but they will not use a 1st round pick on either of those positions but you are on the right track with DE and CB.

John (New Jersey)

Bryan - would you give Carter and Albright even more snaps? Brooking and James have obviously lost a step...seems like both were getting blown up on every running play.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:15 PM)

The ILB were not as bad as you think in the game, not like they were last week. The DEs Coleman and Spears did not do the job well enough. Carter was out of position on one play and Church on another.

Daniel (Santa Fe)

Ok-how would you feel about this. The Cowboys draft Boise State's Kellen Moore in the 3rd round next year, then trade Romo to the Seahawks for a second round pick. Moore is the starter. Thoughts about that secinario? I know Moore is smallish, but he has a ton of upside.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:17 PM)

Is is April already? Check back with me then and I promise to have a great answer for you.

Marie (D.C.)

Happy to see Carter get in on D. How do you think he did overall ?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:19 PM)

I thought he played ok for his first time out other then being out of position on one play, he has a pass that he knocked down but he will need to bring his blitz rush a little tighter around the linemen to be a factor but it was good to see him out there.

G-Man (Leeds, England)

Why are they having so much trouble scoring inside the 20 BB?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:21 PM)

The more I study it, the more I see problems with execution. Too many times of everyone doing their jobs and someone failing. I don't want to give Garrett a pass either with some of the plays he is calling for the situation but his players have let him down too.

Neel (Florida)

Any news of Miles Austin's injury?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:23 PM)

Its higher in his leg than the one he suffered before and its the other leg. I am going to make some calls after I get done with this chat but also stay tuned to ESPN Dallas for more info.

Matt (New York, NY)

what do you think the cowboys could get for Felix in the offseason? I think if anyone will offer a 2nd rounder you have to do it? right?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:24 PM)

I really would like to see Jones come back this season and work with Murray to see what this offense can really do. I havent given up on him yet like others have.

BG (Tampa)

That FG block by Spencer was fantastic. So as long as you don't use a guys back for leverage, I guess you are ok to hurdle your man.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:26 PM)

Anthony Spencer played a heck of a game overall. Not just the blocked field goal but he was all over the place on defense with pressure and in the running game from the backside. Its a shame that he is so inconsistent in his play.

John (New Jersey)

Bryan - I grow weary of hearing how talented this team is. They are talented in some positions like all 32, but they are an 8 or 9 win team @ best. This starts w/ the GM! Thoughts?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:31 PM)

I think this team does have talent in certain areas but there is no doubt that the GM has struggled with drafting. Too many of their selections are not even on the team or in the league. You can't continue to bust drafts the way they have. It kills the depth on your team and that falls in the lap of the GM.

Neil (College Station)

Coming from a former scout's point of view, who is our biggest draft bust in recent years? I'm starting to think it's Spears.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:33 PM)

I wouldnt say Spears. How about Carpenter, Jason Williams, Jacob Rogers, Robert Brewster, Willie Blade, Antonio Bryant, Tony Dixon? You get the picture?

Terrail (Atlanta)

Why does Garrett refuse to run the ball inside the 5yd line?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:35 PM)

Maybe he doesnt have confidence that he can call a running play where he can get hats on hats and he wont have a bust on the front side or back? Maybe he doesnt feel like he can get the push he needs to punch it in? Just my thoughts.

Jorge Romo (Laredo,Tx)

Now that were half-way thru the season, what improvements have you decided to make on the defense and what has to be dealt with in order to get back on track and become a vital weapon against other teams?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:39 PM)

I really do believe that you need to continue to play Bruce Carter and try to get him as ready as possible. He is the one guy that can run to the football and make a play in space. His cover skills look good too. If Sean Lee was healthy, this would be a good looking pair.

Matt (Toronto)

If anything, I actually think that Felix fits better as the change of pace back / receiver... Could solve the 'Boys running game going forward. Even Tanner has been decent.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:40 PM)

To borrow a Parcells line, I think you have the right vision for Jones. He is not the bum that everyone thinks he is, he can make explosive plays and running the ball early in the season, he showed a great deal of toughness.

loaf (NOHO)

i think some of the "stars" on this team lack the attitude and intensity to be real winners. none of the big time guys (romo, ware, austin, etc.) do much on the sideline during games. wish we had a rivers-type guy that would show some fire...

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:42 PM)

Players on the sideline that dont show emotion want to win just as bad as the player that is losing his mind. Calm players then to be more focused I have seen it my whole career.

jw (nj)

in 5 years dez bryant will be a. not on the cowboys b. best wr in the league c. average wide out d. a combination of both take your pick bb

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:45 PM)

I will say in five years that Bryant will not be on the Cowboys unless he learns to prepare better for his job. Its one thing to have talent, its one thing to also be a pro. Look at all the great ones that wore that number before him.

tony williams (dallas, tx)

Why has the linebackers play dropped off big time in the past few games other than losing Lee?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:48 PM)

Lee was not having a great game even before he got hurt. I am not surprised about what has happened to James even though from what I just studied, he played much better. The slipping of Brooking has me wondering. I understood that he got wore down last season but he was much fresher coming into this one. Just not the same player.

Elvis (Tupelo, Mississippi)

Bryan,Really enjoy your insights and trust your experience analyzing film. How much will playing with a cast affect Lee's ability to play his position? I really think he has become key to this D matching up with good offenses.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:50 PM)

I am just going to be honest, no one knows about Lee's situation until that swelling goes down and the pain leaves. I have talked to folks that have told me that there could be a chance that he doesnt play again this season.

Jeri (San Diego)

Ok Bryan where are you? Still relishing in that Cowboy win?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:51 PM)

I am not a fan, I just report what I see good or bad. I am happy for my friends that work for the team when they win. I know it means a lot to them.

BG (Tampa)

When you watched the film, what did you see as the reason the Boys didn't get the same amount of pressure they had been getting on the qb in past games?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:54 PM)

Your eyes are not lying to you. Really surprised in what I had seen from Seattle in the games leading up to this one, that teams were able to get easy pressure. The best pressure player on the Cowboys yesterday was Spencer. Ryan tried to come with some safety blitzes but didnt get anyone really home. Thought that Ware was going to have a huge day but he was accounted for most of the day.

jw (nj)

we need another stud defensive player someone on our team i think cb could be a suitable place? any chance tihis team could look at morris claiborne dre kirkpatrick or a cliff harris

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:56 PM)

I went to school at LSU so I understand Claiborne's game very well. There is no doubt in my mind that the Cowboys will add a CB but how high that we will learn in April.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:57 PM)

Guys...thanks for all the questions...all very good ones. Back to the lab to work on this offense. Full report on ESPN Dallas and my Scout's Eye on Tuesday...have a great week.
