Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Let's do this!

Eric (Paris, Fr.)

Best 3 OL in the League? Hou, NO & Pats?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Houston would be #1 for sure. I think I would go with Carolina's 2nd. Maybe the Raiders 3rd. Buff has been great, but less sold and OAK and BUFF. Not the Saints-too weak at OC and OT. The Pats are tough to argue with.

Chad (Guam)

Is BJ Raji having a down year or are his numbers not reflecting his level of play?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I think he has taken a step back this year. Still good, but not amazing and dominating. Why? Not sure. I know Jenkins was hurt a lot in GBay, but I also think that Raji and Mathews could really use Jenkins back in the fold.

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Pink (Blue Sky)

Matt,One Of These Days, you'll answer one of my questions! While I have High Hopes for the Packers, their defense has been giving me Brain Damage! I need some information first, just the basic facts, do you think the Packers can win the Super Bowl with the state of their pass defense or do they have enough Time to repair it? I'll await your answer as I eat my pudding.

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

That is so great. Fine work. FYI-Bought my Waters The Wall tickets yesterday for July. Oh baby. As for the Pack, hard to say. As long as they keep causing turnovers, they should be fine. But that is tough to rely on. There are certainly good players on that D though-and every team in the NFL has their share of holes. What I want to see is how does this passing game/team deals with the GBay winters if it really puts a damper on their ability to throw the ball as well.

Blake (Houston)

How did the Raiders do such an amazing job stopping the run against Houston, but such an abysmal job against Denver?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

It has been a trend to me with OAK-they have good run stuffers in their Front 7, but overall, the D just allows WAY too many real long runs. Kills your average and stats. It has happened with them now for a few years running. Has to be stopped.

Juan (Detroit)

I feel like I'm the only person in Detroit who isn't convinced the Lions are going to bring home the Lombardi trophy this season. Are the Lions really that good or do we just have a fan base that's become delusional for only having 1 playoff win since Bobby Layne left in 1958?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Not the best team in the league, but clearly massively improved. And extremely young-built for the long haul. Especially curious about this particular team after their bye. Stafford should be healthier. What kind of adjustments do they make on both sides of the ball (in the run game)?

Mike (Boca Raton)

Steelers secondary: just a bad game v. baltimore or exposed for what they truly are?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

W Gay is a massive liability, but other than him, I think this 2011 version of their secondary is quite good. Flacco played a great game-feasted on Gay.

Eric (Chicago)

MW, did the Bears impress you on Monday Night...specifically their OL play? I liked the rollouts to the right that Martz drew up for Cutler, looked solid delivering the ball all night.

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

The Bears were extremely impressive. OL played a great game. Coaches deserve a lot of credit-like last year. They know their weaknesses and compensate for them. Cutler was fantastic as well. Getting more comfortable in this system and really thriving-plus, he got his Vandy buddy Bennett back, which is huge-chain mover.

Nick (Houston)

Was it hard leaving Charles Woodson off the list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Sorta. All time great. But just not doing it like he was. Still an obvious playmaker and trust me, he woudldn't be too far off the list.

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

"Are all these your guitars?" "Wanna take a bath?" The iPod is treating me right today-as usual

Darrell (CA)

What do you make of the mess that is the AFC West right now? Who do you think will come out of it alive and make the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Total mess. Its just bad football. I will stick with SD to win it, but can't say I am overly optimistic with that. OAK could be that team too if Palmer continues to improve and cuts down on the INTs-plus McFadden will eventually be back.

john (ks)

Was going to SF a mistake for Braylon Edwards?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Edwards didn't have teams beating down his door. Good risk for both player and team-but esp for the Niners. Gonna be tough for Edwards to put up big numbers there though.

Neil (NYC)

Where do you stand on Eli Manning? Elite or just very good? MVP Candidate or gets too much credit when his team wins?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Playing great. There is only one MVP candidate right now, but in my Monday column I said that Eli has as good of a case for 2nd in that balloting as anyone. Making an average OL look better than they are. Huge win without Nicks & Bradshaw. Very impressed. But consistency has always been his issue. Let's see him keep it up a bit longer. Not Elite-people throw that word around too much. But he isn't far off at all from the true big boys.

Pete (NY)

Have we just seen the greatest half-seasons ever by a quarterback (Rodgers) and a cornerback (Revis)?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Would have to defer our Stats department, but you very well could be right

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Haven't seen your rookie report, but did Von Miller look as dominant this week to you as he did to my untrained eye?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

He is amazing. Last week, I dropped Miller to #2 behind Newton and I left Miller at

Gray (Chicago)

In no way am I trying to play the respect card, but what is it about the Chicago Bears than makes the experts undervalue them before the season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Well, I am guilty of it too. Was very hard for me to trust that OL and O in general before the season. Even now, you look at them against every decent team they face and they don't have a ton of individual advantages on paper. But they are greater than the sum of their parts.

Jeremy (Canada)

Shouldn't the Cardinals move Larry Fitz for draft picks? They don't look like they'll be good again any time soon and his value is still pretty high.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

His value is extremely high! GREAT player that just about every team in the league would be interested in. But he is the face of the Cards-and they just gave him a monster contract. Sure, if someone blows you away with draft picks for him-deal him. But I would say that about anyone more or less.

Jake (Miami)

I strongly believe my dolphins get another win this week against a boring redskins team am i crazy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

I will be picking MIA...WASH stinks

Brian (Charlotte, NC)

The 49ers lead the league defensively in Yards per Point allowed and are second offensively in Yards per Point scored. What does that say about the team?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

I think they have the 2nd best D in the NFL behind BALT...but it is close. ELITE D

Mike (Boca Raton)

What did you see on the 92-yard game losing drive by the steelers defense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Fatigue. Great throws by Flacco.

Shanny the Rat (DC)

I am going to let Helu have the rest of the season to evaluate him as our starting RB...believe me? Muah-ha-ha!

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

That would be a fantastic idea...but I don't believe you one bit.

Greg (Birmingham)

Hindsight is 20/20 but would AZ draft Barkley or Jones given the chance with how Kolb has worked out?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Probably-he has really been less-than-impressive. But we also have some more games to eval Kolb. I do think he was thrust into a very difficult situation though too without any mini camp, etc. So he could improve. But wow

Mitch (NC)

Wearing an Andrew Luck jersey at an Indy game. OK or tasteless?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

I am cool with it

Brad (London)

Matt, NO vs. ATL - who wins and why?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Torn. Going with ATL though. Better D. AT home. But-torn.

Greg (Birmingham)

What does NE need more a playmaker on offense or defense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Tough one. On O, the only thing they need is a deep threat-a Moss-type. On D, they need a stud pass rusher, a safety and a CB. But on D, even adding just one of those three could make the other problems lesser.

mike noonal (lynn ma)

are the pats done

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Nah. Didn't we say that last year after the Browns' loss?

Nathan (DC)

Do the Redskins go back to Grossman? Not sure it would make a lot of difference--just asking.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

It really doesn't make much of a difference, but I would give Grossman a try again soon. As backup QBs go, I would rather have Grossman. -Just thinking big picture

Matt (NH)

Who are the best rookie o-linemen so far this year? Does Pouncey fall in that list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Pouncey was very strong early, then tailed off. But then had a strong game this week. I think I would go with Tyson Smith. Excellent.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Matt, any reason why DHB was only on the field for 1 play last week? I love Ford and Moore but DHB has been solid this year.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

DHB has been very solid. But I still think Ford and Moore are better players. Maybe Palmer is more comfortable with those two after the bye-I wouldn't blame him. They both looked very good too, esp Ford.

Rick (Atlanta)

M-Dub,Who are your two NFC Wildcard teams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Wow. I will take SF (no kidding), Giants, Pack and Saints to win divisions. Then, I guess I will take ATL (could win division) and DET or CHI...I know, on the fence there.

aggie (tx)

Is demarco murray this good?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

No. He is good, but not insanely great. Very little wiggle or change of direction. But he runs hard, is decisive and has long speed.

shanard (utah)

MW, could hanesworth be a possibility for the panthers since they need a DT, and when he decides to play like he wants it will make their back end aloot better... Thats a BIG IF.....

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

They aren't going to win the Superbowl this year. I don't think I would mess with a good thing that they have going. But-when right-he is exactly what they need.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

This is how The Tebow needs to be used right? Oh, and both his TD throws were absolute ropes right on the money...ignore the horrible coverage on both...

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

All very true. Sustainable?

Rick (Atlanta)

M-Dub,If you had to start a team right now to win over the next ten years who would be your starting QB, RB, WR's and TE? In other words I'm looking for young studs.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Rodgers, Peterson, Calvin J, Finley...I guess that group is just a little on the old side for 10 years down the road, but strong foursome! BTW, my Top 50 players in the NFL article was just posted, as was another 10 guys who are up and comers-check it out. And while you are at it, follow me on Twitter #WilliamsonNFL

Ryan (Phila)

Matt, how much longer can the Eagles keep DRC on the field? He is right now playing as badly as any corner I've seen, can't cover and doesn't seem at all interested in tackling.

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

He has never been interested in tackling and played poorly in Zona last year too. I said at the time that he really wasn't that big of a factor in the Kolb trade-and doesn't fit in the slot well.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Most underrated CB and overrated this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Well, I have Haden as my 2nd CB on my Top 50 list behind Revis. I don't think most realize how exceptional he is. Overrated? D Hall always comes to mind.

Bill (Toronto)

What are your thoughts on the struggles of Blaine Gabbert this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

He is in way over his head right now. Doesn't handle pressure well-sees ghosts. Crumbles around pressure. But he can sling it, seems intelligent and should get an improved supporting cast next year-I would hope.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Does Patrick Peterson need to be moved to safety already? Does he make the Pro Bowl as a PR?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Peterson is improving very quickly at CB. And yes, he should go to PB as PR.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Jake Ballard? Can we give this guy a nickname?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Why sure...whatcha thinkin?

James (San Jose, CA)

Is McCoy the quickest back in the league? he makes guys look slow and is so good at making people miss. Also why the heck don't the eagles give him the ball more?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Yes, he is the quickest back in the league-maybe since Barry Sanders. Amazing really. As for his workload, he isn't the biggest guy around and they need him for the long haul. I can't be too critical of his # of touches.

Blake (Houston)

Haden ahead of Joseph?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Yes. I like Joseph though for sure. But Haden has been lights out-when healthy.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Is Colt McCoy out as a starter after this year? Not on the best team, I know, but he has really regressed.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

McCoy is much more the problem in Clev than the answer. Looks like an outstanding backup to me.

Ryan (WI)

Where do you rank Bryan Bulaga among RTs? Seems like he is having a Pro Bowl level season. Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Fantastic season. Prob Top 5...not a great group of RTs though

Rory (Ireland)

Do you think, for the first time in a long time in Pittsburgh, the offense is playing at a higher level than its defense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Possibly. Would say both are Top 10 though.

Wooderson (Texas)

You gave us the NFC playoffs, how bout the AFC?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

These aren't easy right now folks. Division winners: SD (yuck), BALT, NENG, HOUS (obviously)-then I def think PGH gets in and prob the Jets over Cincy

Dennis (San Jose)

While were on Nicknames. How about "Mongo" for Mike Iupati on the 49ers.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Oh I like it! Blazing Saddles references are always welcome here!

Jay (Kalamazoo)

I know they are very careful in regards to protecting the character of their team, but with DT Sammie Lee Hill hurt, and his old coach Schwartz at the helm, do you think the Lions should go after Haynesworth?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Fairley is there though and poised for a much bigger role. Thought about then and PHIL-Washburn

Gary (Maryland)

If you could have McGahee, Mathews or Blount starting for your team in the backfield for the rest of the season, who would you pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

For FF or Real Football? For real football, McGahee would be last. Mathews first, but his durability really worries me.

Brad (London)

Matt, you have Finley over Graham?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Barely, but yes.

Justin Beiber (purple pants store)

Still think that at some point Burner Turner wears down and the offense goes pass happy, or does that never happen this year? Baby.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Could happen and I think ATL has expected it for some time. They also realize that they really need to sling it to compete with GBay and the Saints. Thus, the Julio deal. Could see more of J Rodgers going forward too.

Steve (Bristol)

What does your scounting report look like on Hankerson? If he can hold onto the ball, can he be that big #1 WR in Washington in a year or so?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Could be a big strong #2 for WASH perhaps. Doesn't have

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

I thought Ballard's nickname was "the next Mark Bavaro"...just like any white WR is "the next MacCaffrey or Welker", depending on size...I don't make the rules...

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

or the next Jason Witten-get asked that a lot too. Big two-way pigment challenged TE comes on the scene-"Is he the next Witten?"

Alex (Anaheim)

Giants aren't missing the playoffs now, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Brutal schedule! But I tend to think they get in

Jonno (NYC)

Liking Kiwanuka any better in the 4-3 after last week's performance?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

He can do it, but liability in coverage. Just don't think that is his best fit.

Yogi (Alaska)

I know its early, but when factoring in all aspects of the team game, offense-defense-special teams, to include clutch players and coaches, do you think the Steelers and Packers are the odds on favorites to meet in the SB? I dont trust Flacco or the Pat's DEF n the AFC, nor do I trust the Saints DEF or anyone in the NFC east either. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I can certainly see that-and can't argue with it. PGH will most likely have a much tougher road now though after this past loss.

Dan (Washington, DC)

"Could be a big strong #2 for WASH perhaps. Doesn't have" Can you finish that sentence?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Didn't realize it all didn't go through...sorry. "Doesn't have #1 WR movement skills-or hands"

roger (ct)

will the cowboys make the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Not liking their chances. Too many other high quality teams in the NFC

Pink (Seattle)

If Mark Ingram plays all 16 games next year, what kind of season do you think he is capable of? Closer to 1000 yards, or 1500?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Even if he plays 16 games, how many carries per game will Payton give him? REAL curious to see Ingram's second half of the season. I would feed him like crazy.

ben (ireland)

do you expect Julio Jones to kick on after his performance last sunday or do you think it was an aberation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Not going to break two long TDs every week, but he is not an aberration. He was injured vs. GBay, but if you look at the 2 games before the injury and this last one, his first back in action, he has average about 125 in those three games. Wow

Mike (Brooklyn)

Am I crazy, or has Will Beatty been NYG's best OL this year, even better than Snee (who hasn't been that great this year)?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Not sure I would go that far, but I will certainly agree that the right side of NYG's OL isn't close to what it was last year. Shocking.

Larry (NH)

No way Welker doesn't get re-signed, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

No way. Can't see him playing anywhere else. Would be bad for him and the Pats.

Steve (Bristol)

What's the biggest surprise to you halfway through this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Newton. Newton.

Joe (NY)

Eli has one of the worst group of receiver in the league. Brady, Rogers and Brees are all in the top 5 in that regard. agree??

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

I don't think Eli's receivers are all that bad-when Nicks is there. Nicks is a STUD.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Folks, I have to run. Stop back here next week, download Football Today and keep in touch with me on Twitter. Take care
