Chat with Ed Hinton

Ed Hinton
  (2:01 PM)

Hi, all. We'll, we don't have much to talk about today, DO we? Lots of Kyle stuff here of course.

scott (denton'tx )

who do you think will win this weekand race at the newly repave race track at pir

Ed Hinton
  (2:02 PM)

Try this one: Carl Edwards.

Lee (Tampa)

Ed, 2 points. 1, NASCAR needs feuds like Harvick vs Busch to keep interest in the sport, but they dont need a cowardly act such as Kyle perpetrated on Ron Hornaday. 2. please, people, stop comparing Kyle to Dale Sr. Kyle had everything handed to him by Rousch, Hendrick and now Gibbs racing. Dale Sr was the American dream, high school drop out, dirt poor, who climbed his was up to the pinnacle of racing. He was the last American hero. Kyle's not even in the conversation.

Ed Hinton
  (2:04 PM)

Yeah, but Big E took some pretty nasty back-shots at people in his time. Take Sterling Marlin at Bristol in 1987, through Terry Labonte at Bristol in '99. Earnhardt nailed people a lot of times, and in retaliation . . .and just for meanness and to win.

scott (denton'tx )

what was your reaction when kyle bush did to ron hornday last friday night in texas motor speedway truck race you thought on that

Ed Hinton
  (2:04 PM)

I immediately thought he'd waaaay overdone it, that it was a lousy shot at a championship contender, and that Kyle was in big trouble. I did not, and do not, however, think he should lose sponsorship over it.

Miller (UT)

Hi Ed, do you think NASCAR will do more to try to keep Cup guys out of the lower series after what happened last Friday?

Ed Hinton
  (2:05 PM)

I think one of their best solutions would be to ban Kyle from Trucks for a significant period of time. Say 10 races. And yes, all this is partly their fault for letting these Cup guys go down two levels and play like that.

Brian (Glade Valley,NC)

Hello Mr.Hinton.As of this typing JGR has yet to make any statement regarding Kyle's future from this point forward.I'm not a fan of Kyle's but if I was a fan of his,I'd want to know if my driver was going to be allowed to compete.I find it disapponting that they've had nothing to say about any of this since leaving Texas.Your opinion?

Ed Hinton
  (2:06 PM)

As we began this chat, things were still up in the air as far as I could tell. Some of my colleagues are working on the story as we chat here.

David (Dover)

is it true m&ms dropped kyle and he may lose his ride i see him in the rcr 33 next season how about you

Ed Hinton
  (2:07 PM)

No word yet. Just gossip. I don't think they'll drop him. But you're right, RCR -- "the Oakland Raiders of stock car racing", childress used to call them -- would be a good fit.

Logan (MA)

Who do u have winning the Nationwide title?

Ed Hinton
  (2:08 PM)

Stenhouse. Gotta stick with another ol' Mis'ippi boy.

Tracy (CT)

IF...big IF, Mars wants away from KYle, do you see them going to the 20 and HD/DG to the 18 or do you see them going to a family man like the 17?

Ed Hinton
  (2:08 PM)

Not sure they can switch like that. It may be that they're either in or out.

DC (Fort Worth, Texas)

Ed, wasn't there to be an announcement of Montoya's contract extension with EFR last weekend? Is Montoya still planning to re-sign or is he going somewhere else.

Ed Hinton
  (2:09 PM)

Honestly don't think there's anyplace else he could go right now.

big jon (rahway nj)

picked kenseth with the 5th pick in my fantasy league this week. where do you think matt will end up at phoenix?

Ed Hinton
  (2:09 PM)

That's pretty close.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

Do you think Clint Bowyer wishes he wouldn't have signed with MWR now that Kyle could get fired?

Ed Hinton
  (2:10 PM)

No, because I don't think JGR would pick up Bowyer based on what I heard his negotiations were like with Childress. Wanted way too much money.

Scott (Charlotte)

I know this may sound odd, but I think the death of Dan Weldon had something to do with the penalty that Kyle got. I think NASCAR wants to make sure they got a handle on everything before they have their own tragedy.

Ed Hinton
  (2:11 PM)

Hmmmmmmm. Nah, I think NASCAR would have done it this way regardless. What the death of Wheldon may have done is make the public uproar greater. Actually Wheldon's situation had virtually nothing to do with safety in NASCAR. That was an open cockpit issue pure and simple.

Janice (TO)

Will Reuitmann find a ride for next year. Really pretty crappy the way that played out. How disrespectful.

Ed Hinton
  (2:12 PM)

I was a little surprised at Mikey on that one myself. Reutimann may have a tough time finding a good ride, but he'll probably find something at least mediocre.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

Kyle at RCR? Is your memory that bad?

Ed Hinton
  (2:14 PM)

Not at all. Just cause Childress got him in a headlock doesn't mean he wouldn't like to have him as a driver.

Tracy (CT)

Do you see the Dillon Brothers as one of the best brother combinations of all time eventually?

Ed Hinton
  (2:14 PM)

That's a long eventually. Check back with me in 20 years for comparison with the Allisons, Unsers, et al.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

Is Steve Wallace going to be racing next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:15 PM)

If Rusty has a breath left in him, yes.

Ryan (Florence, AZ)

Hey Ed, I am not a fan of Kyle, nor do I dislike him. Guess I am one of the few that he does not polarize, I just appreciate the talent and I know he is great for the sport, both the good and bad Kyle. Anyway, I think he has served a great enough punishment by being parked last weekend. If the sponsors force him out, I think it is a bad idea. Although it would be a convenient time for Home Depot and Mars, Inc. to switch drivers. Your thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:16 PM)

Excellent points. I think Mars ought to stick by him. Goodness knows he's made them enough money.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

I guess if Kyle was at RCR then the ol man could make Kyle pay for all the damaged equipment.

Ed Hinton
  (2:17 PM)

Or he could get him in a headlock and whup him right there at the shop!

John (FL)

Who do you think is the most underrated driver in Cup right now?Do you have a pick for Champion or is it too close to call?

Ed Hinton
  (2:17 PM)

I think Smoke's got the momentum. Underrated, maybe Regan Smith.

Jeff (Clearwater)

I am not a KyBu fan at all, but the mere fact that they are talking about firing him or taking away sponsorships is pretty ridiculous. When JGR and M&Ms signed him, they had to know that something like this is part of the package.

Ed Hinton
  (2:18 PM)

There you go. Well said.

Quentin (Ames, Iowa )

Do you think after a season's worth of building chemistry together and nearly winning a couple races that Dale Jr. and Stevie Letarte will come out of the gate and be able to win and run up front more than they were this year? The 88 has only led like 52 laps this season.

Ed Hinton
  (2:18 PM)

I think they'll steadily improve. I don't think they'll win right out of the gate next year.

Tracy (Savage, CT)

Who will drive for Rowdy in Nationwide next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:19 PM)

All of that remains to be seen. Z-Line Designs is the only pullout reported thus far . . and that's a married couple with unusual sponsorship.

scott (denton'tx)

do you think that joe gibbs should set out kyle bush for the rest of the season since there are only two race's left in the season and maybe let him cool off and start fresh for next season

Ed Hinton
  (2:20 PM)

No, I don't. I think if Gibbs and Mars have any guts at all they will stick with their driver.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Do you think Jr Motorsports going to change Danica # from the 7 to the 10 with DP having the # 10 in the Sprint Cup Series for next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:20 PM)

if she wants it, and if the 10 is gettable without paying anyone big bucks.

Shayne - NY [via mobile]

In regards to your article... NASCAR most definitely isn't boring without Kyle, it's actually a more mature form of racing. I don't get how anyone can still stick up for him. He's the most underserving spoiled driver there ever was.

Ed Hinton
  (2:21 PM)

Well, if he loses his sponsor you'll get a chance to prove your point.

Sandy Beach (NY)

Religion seems to be a big part of Nascar each week. If God forgives then why can't everyone (eg. Gibbs, Sponsors, fans, etc.) extend the same olive branch. I don't agree with what he did, I agree with sitting him out. Things have gotten way out of hand and I think people need to take a step back. What's going on doesn't seem very Christian to me. I'm not a bible thumper but I do believe that he's had time to see the reaction and reflect and now we need to move on. My respect level for the Gibb's organization will change a whole lot if they dump him and I won't be buying any M&Ms anytime soon.

Ed Hinton
  (2:22 PM)

Some very interesting points there.

Austin (Cheeseburger West Side)

KyBu has been punished enough, I mean his brother is Kurt Busch. That must be AWFUL.

Ed Hinton
  (2:22 PM)

Hahahahaha

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

How about mandatory Anger Management classes for Kyle through out all of next year. One session a week maybe.

Ed Hinton
  (2:22 PM)

Well, they tried that with Smoke a few years back. Hard to tell whether it worked or not.

Erik (virginia)

Kyle Busch has done a lot for both Joe Gibbs racing and M&M's/Mars with all of his fans and all of the great driving he does. Before KB, the M

Ed Hinton
  (2:24 PM)

Well said, Erik. If Gibbs and Mars bail on him, they're gonna look real bad in my book.

Collin (Little rock)

Jesus will forgive, but Kevin won't forget.

Ed Hinton
  (2:24 PM)

Interesting way of putting it.

Gennie (NC)

If drivers had to pay for damage to their car at the end of a race weekend, don't you think we'd see just plain old hard racing at it's finest. Very disappointed in the Gibbs organization that they haven't stood up for their driver. They've had a lot of experience dealing with athletes and their silence is speaking volumes.

Ed Hinton
  (2:25 PM)

Wow, if drivers had to pay for the damage, we might not see side by side racing at all. But good points about Gibbs.

Titus Pullo (New York)

You made a comment recently that fans who don't like Toyota in the Cup forget that Toyota has U.S. plants while The Big Three manufacture cars in Mexico and Canada. While this is true, haven't there been people like Lee Iacocca who have said that Japan is very hard to do business in. That unlike Europe, they will continually throw up obstacles-even telling Caterpillar that their dirt is unique? I realize that it's a complicated issue but some of the Toyota opposition is understandable.P.S. I drive a 1998 Nissan. Fine car. And I love how they are giving an American gamer, Bryan Heikrotter, a chance to compete in sports car after he beat out 56,000 other Gran Tourismo players.

Ed Hinton
  (2:26 PM)

Bottom line, Toyota deserves to be in NASCAR at least as much as Ford, GM and Chrysler.

Tyler (MN)

Loved the article Ed! Even if Mars leaves someone will come back to sponsor Kyle. Its all good!

Ed Hinton
  (2:27 PM)

Mars better look before it leaps on this thing.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Ed, do you see good things for the 16 team since they have had a solid chase?

Ed Hinton
  (2:27 PM)

Well, yes, but I've seen good things for the 16 for years now . . .and it materializes only occasionally.

Rich (NYC) [via mobile]

Hey Ed! Biggest surprise for me this year is the 2 of Bad Brad, biggest disappointment is the 11 of Hamlin. Your picks for both? Take care!

Ed Hinton
  (2:28 PM)

You've just about hit on it, Rich.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Speedway has the most women to race in Sprint Cup Series Races?

Ed Hinton
  (2:29 PM)

My guess would be Charlotte or Daytona. Charlotte has pushed for women beginning with Janet Guthrie, and Daytona is a magnet for everybody.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

When is Brad Keselowski's contract up with Penske?

Ed Hinton
  (2:30 PM)

He's got at least one more year. I think more.

Tracy (Savage, CT)

What can we expect out of Rowdy for the last 2 races?

Ed Hinton
  (2:30 PM)

A lot of controversy, whether he's in the last two races or not.

Blake (Atlanta)

Can you get me a date with Shauna Robinson?

Ed Hinton
  (2:31 PM)

Last I heard, she was married.

scott (denton'tx)

you said earlier that you think that carl edwards will win at pir what about tony he won this past weekand at texas what is your take or do you see anybody winning outside the chase at phoenix this weekand

Ed Hinton
  (2:32 PM)

Yeah, but Edwards won Phoenix in the spring. Tony hasn't won Phoenix in more than a decade. Also, Phoenix is a big unknown, with a wider turn off turn 2 and a more sweeping dog leg in the back.

Tracy (CT)

I do not live in Savage CT. Savage is my last name and that is octo. Please stop posting questions from that. Thank you and please dont psot this.

Ed Hinton
  (2:33 PM)

If someone can explain to me how to recognize Octo, I will try. I'm just grabbing questions and posting 'em. they come in fast. I don't have time to sit here and think, Hmmmm. is that octo?

Chris (NB)

If you could give someone Steve Wallace's ride that currently runs NW, who would you give it to?

Ed Hinton
  (2:33 PM)

Oh, probably Stenhouse or Bayne . . . but then, that would be a lateral move for them.

Blake (Atlanta)

Tell Kyle if he doesnt get to race in cup then he should bring the late model to Jefferson GA for the World Crown

Ed Hinton
  (2:34 PM)

I saw Earnhardt get in BIG trouble with Jody Ridley once at Jefferson. Spun Jody early. Jody chased him the whole feature, couldn't quite get to him, so wrecked Bobby Allison for getting in the way. Kyle would love Jefferson.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

Do you honestly think that Kyle will learn anything from this?

Ed Hinton
  (2:36 PM)

Probably, but I'm not sure it's a matter of learning with him. I think it's a matter of temper flaring up and momentarily erasing everything he's learned.

CJ (Erie PA)

FYI, Carl didn't win at Phoenix in the spring (Gordon did). Carl got punted by an over-aggressive Kyle Busch way early in the race.

Ed Hinton
  (2:36 PM)

oh, I'm thinking last fall, not this spring. you're right.

Ed Hinton
  (2:36 PM)

oh, I'm thinking last fall, not this spring. you're right.

Tracy (CT)

Sigh. Whatever. Nice trying to chat but its not worth it anymore. I do not apreciate my name being stolen. Its not your fault but I am done with these chats. Have a good one.

Ed Hinton
  (2:37 PM)

If someone, or our techs, can tell me how to fix this, we will.

Austin (Cheeseburger West Side)

When will we get to see NASCAR on a street course?

Ed Hinton
  (2:38 PM)

probably never. they thought about it in the '80s but decided it would be too clumsy.

Open Wheel Fan (The Brickyard)

Sounds like the crapwagons are headed to China next year for a street race. Good or bad news for the series?

Ed Hinton
  (2:39 PM)

I don't think overseas racing helps or hurts them. It does, however, take up weeks of their time.

Ed Hinton
  (2:40 PM)

Whatever he's done, he has made them a TON of money on candy sales. BTW, it was 128 in a 45 zone.

CJ (Erie PA)

In the past, you've mentioned driver vs. media skirmishes. Do you recall any media vs. media skirmishes?

Ed Hinton
  (2:41 PM)

Oh, sure. But it wasn't very interesting to the public.

Ed Hinton
  (2:42 PM)

Oh, I suspect he's a good three years away at least. Maybe four or five. But of course a lot of that depends on how sponsorship comes around in the next couple of years.

Ed Hinton
  (2:42 PM)

Why, thanks, Tracy.

Blake (Atlanta)

Kyle really isnt the jerk people are making him out to be. I have met him at 5 flags and Lanier, and both times he signed autographs and made it a point to speak to as many fans as he could.

Ed Hinton
  (2:42 PM)

That's what you hear over and over again from fans who have met him.

Bart (Springfield)

Are we finally gonna get a break from all the "Kyle is mature" articles from the media for a while?

Ed Hinton
  (2:43 PM)

One thing is for sure, we are NOT going to get a break from "Are we finally gonna get a break from -- fill in the blank -- on Kyle?" questions.

Titus Pullo (New York)

Since Jimmie Johnson said that IndyCar should stop racing on big ovals after the death of Dan Wheldon, has he said that MotoGP should stop racing after the death of Marco Simoncelli?

Ed Hinton
  (2:44 PM)

Don't think so, but what Jimmie doesn't understand is if IndyCar stops racing on ovals it is finished as a series.

richard wallin (south bend indiana)

Kyle busch has no regard for ne one but himself.when is nascar gunna put some punishment that will make him change his bad attitude.and what do u think nascar can do that will make him b a better race car driver and more of a humble person as well.it's pretty bad when your own bro thinks ur an a hole.lol

Ed Hinton
  (2:45 PM)

There's much talk that various measures may be under discussion as we speak.

DPE (Saint Paul)

It's M&M's they are going to make a ton of money not matter who they sponsor!

Ed Hinton
  (2:45 PM)

If the candy leaps off the shelves on its own, why do they bother sponsoring anybody?

Johnny (Juniper)

I met Kyle at Charlotte last year, he wasnt being fan freindly that day

Ed Hinton
  (2:45 PM)

Aha. Another perspective here.

Tyler (MN)

As big Rowdy fans, do we have anything to worry about? Rowdy did something wrong but will we have to buy new merchendise next year?

Ed Hinton
  (2:47 PM)

There doesn't appear to be a definitive answer yet. Just gossip.

scott (denton'tx)

i think if dale was alive today i think that he might like what he is doing but he might take him back to the wood shed and kick he's you know i i mean

Ed Hinton
  (2:47 PM)

Funny, that's EXACTLY what they said about Earnhardt Sr. when he first came along and starting wrecking people.

Johnny (Juniper)

Doesnt Kyle being nowhere to be found on the M&M website tell you something is about to happen with his sponsorship?

Ed Hinton
  (2:48 PM)

The silence from a lot of corners is growing deafening, yes.

Mark (Columbus)

How many more wins do you see Jeff Gordon have in his career. I would around 10

Ed Hinton
  (2:49 PM)

My guess is that would be about the high end.

Jill (DC)

Humanity let humanity down at PSU. We all have a responsibility to each other and so disappointing on so many levels. Thoughts?

Ed Hinton
  (2:50 PM)

Geez, we got enough trouble with Kyle Busch, without jumping into Penn State.

Titus Pullo (New York)

Which is better cash out my IRA to go to: Monaco F1 or 24 heures du Mans?

Ed Hinton
  (2:52 PM)

I would check months early on Le Mans. If the factories are back with big contingents -- Peugeot, Audi, and I'm even hearing rumors of a Porsche return -- then it's worthwhile. If not, Monaco is your best but -- but your IRA will vanish quicker in Monaco than in the French countryside.

DPE (Saint Paul)

M&M's/Mars has every right to advertise

Ed Hinton
  (2:53 PM)

Are you connected with them? Maybe a PR rep sitting in on this chat? If so, I'll tell you what I would think of them if they kicked the stool out from under Kyle.

penny (mn)

you either love kyle or hate him...i am a HUGE fan...i would just like to know that if some other driver...say Harvik or Edwards did the same thing would the penalty be the same?????

Ed Hinton
  (2:54 PM)

Well, they DID do the same thing to Harvick in 2002. He blew his cool in a truck race and they sat him out through that weekend's cup race.

Nolan C. (Plano, TX)

Would it be better for NASCAR to see an ex-Cup driver (Sadler, Vickers, Reuty, Ragan, etc.) or an up-and-comer (Stenhouse, Bayne, etc.) win next year's NW title?

Ed Hinton
  (2:54 PM)

Oh, I think the up and coming guy, for sure.

babatunde (Nigeria)

Arsenal is now a teame of espirience and team worker

Ed Hinton
  (2:55 PM)

And Arsenal has great tradition, IF you're on an English football league chat. You go back down to the service station and take a right.

Chris (Tallahasse, FL)

Do you think Mark Martin will make any noise at MWR next year as far as wins?

Ed Hinton
  (2:56 PM)

actually, no.

CJ (Erie PA)

babatunde from Nigeria is Octo!

Ed Hinton
  (2:56 PM)

how can we tell such things?

Bobby (Tallahasse, FL)

Isn't this really more about Kyles "body of work" now more than just about Texas? If you look at everything he has been involved in over the last 2 seasons alone its gotta be getting old for these sponsors.

Ed Hinton
  (2:57 PM)

Probably so, yes. Thing is, we haven't heard much screaming out of the candy company in the past.

Bill R. (Magnolia, Tx)

If the "parked" --Harvick and Busch for "truck incidents"----Why didn't they park Edwards for darn near Killing Kelslowski in a Cup Car---intentionally..??

Ed Hinton
  (2:59 PM)

Now, let's not dredge up all that again. The "launch" was not intentional. Sensational film footage does not make a penalty-worthy offense.

Les M (Louisiana)

Did you think Carl Edwards had a "deer in the headlights" look on his face after Smoke beat him last week? He looked real nervous to me

Ed Hinton
  (2:59 PM)

Yeah, unfortunately, hate to say it, but I think you're right.

penny (mn)

well if M&M's fire him they are going to lose a heck of a driver and nascar is going to be very boring!!!

Ed Hinton
  (3:00 PM)

There ya go, Penny. That's a good way to finish up. Thanks to all for stopping by.
