Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:00 PM)

Greetings everyone. Nice of you to come by. We will dive right in.

Noble (Tucson)

Do you think Andre Johnson's return -either this week or week 12- will actually disrupt a Texans' smooth-running offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:00 PM)

Absolutely not. What do you think they should hold out one of the best receivers in football?

Jeff (Afghanistan)

Also when the Texans make the playoff...withh Gary get any looks for Coach of the Year

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Unlikely if Jim Harbaugh and/or Jim Schwartz get teams to the playoffs.

kyle (tn)

biggest disappointment this year besides chris johnson this year? is it the lack of pressure from the d-line? the o-lines inability to run block at times? or the lack of wr depth really showing itself after losing kenny britt?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Well, the lack of receiver depth isn't a surprise. I'd say the pass rush.

Jeff (Afghanistan)

Paul, What is the feeling on Rookie of the year looks for JJ Watts?and with Brooks Reed heating it up will be get some looks as well?.Also with Johnson getting ready to come back will Foster and Tate still get the touches they need to keep breaking 100 yds. a game, what do you think there finial yardage will be? (Foster 1500, Tate 1200) your thoughts.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:02 PM)

I haven't looked closely at the competition, and someone with numbers will win. But Watt has been excellent and is a no brainer for All-Rookie Team. I could campaign for DRY consideration.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

I don't get the whole "we need to see Peyton practice in December" thing. If the doctors clear him to play--won't he play? Since they haven't won a single game, you'd think they could use that roster spot. Sign someone off another team's practice squad--whatever!

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:03 PM)

Big secret: There is not one guy on any of the other 31 practice squads who wins you a game, this year or ever. The roster spot is not a big deal at all.

Matt (NashVegas)

With Chris Johnson as an example, is the new plan for high-profile backs...4 year contract out of college...franchise...franchise...cut. ??

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:04 PM)

Might be. And not even sure about the franchises. The thing is it's still going to be a case by case basis. Frank Gore got a deal and is performing, right?

heath (oboro, ky)

What do you think about Munch comment stating Locker should/would perform to the level of Cam/Dalton if inserted?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:04 PM)

What else can he say? What else should he say?

Robert (Jacksonville Beach)

Why do you think the Jags haven't extended Gene Smith's contract yet?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:05 PM)

They offered in offseason. He passed. Could see them waiting until season is over now.

Dillon (Tallahassee)

Who are your top 3 rated linebackers in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Paul Posluszny, Brian Cushing, Daryl Smith. Tough there at one and two, flipped back and forth.

its (outta here)

best draft pick out of the AFC south?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Watt.

its (outta here)

best pick up in free agency out of the AFC south?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Johnathan Joseph. Matt Hasselbeck a pretty good add too.

Benjamin (Santa Maria, California)

Is this Blaine Gabberts chance to have a break out type game?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

If not now, when?

Shaun (TN)

Clayton gave out his mid-season grades with a few surprises. What are yours? I give Texans - B+, Titans - D, Jaguars - D, and Colts - F. Very mediocre division.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:08 PM)

Same. except I'd give Titans C-. How can you give 4-4 team and 2-6 team same grade?

The 99% (Occupy AFC South Chat)

As the 1% in this chat, we, as the 99%, demand you that you spread your wealth of AFC South knowledge! Hypothetical scenario... if the Colts actually do get the #1 pick, do you think there is any chance they skip Luck, trade back in the draft for tons of picks and get one of the other 1st round QBs and solve some other needs? That seems to be smarter because there will be less pressure to start the new QB so Peyton can groom him (as long as he's back 100%). But what do I know? You're the 1%!

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:09 PM)

Certainly they could trade the pick as a part of a campaign to load up and surround Manning for a run to try to get a couple titles in the next four seasons. But I don't see them passing if they can have Luck.

Adrian (Houston, TX)

I'd hold Andre out this week and bring him back for the final six games. How long do you think it will take to get him to mesh in the offense once he does return?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

Three plays.

Sean (Houston)

Paul, what is Reinfeldt's stock like in the front office? We have consistently failed in the draft for a number of years and its really showing on the field. Senderrick Marks, Michael Griffin, Jared Cook are just not getting it done and it seems to me that every year away from Floyd Reese this team just keeps getting worse.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

How much influence did Jeff Fisher have? This last draft looks pretty good, and it may have been the first with Reinfeldt not deferring.

Scott (Houston)

How much would you expect Haynesworth to play for TB this week and how do you think that impacts Houston's ability to run the ball?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:11 PM)

Minimally, if at all and minimally, if at all.

Josh M. (Jacksonville)

What can be said about new Jags WR, Brian Robiskie? I like his size, but he's not the fastest.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:11 PM)

He was cut by a team with no playmakers. That's all you need to know.

heath (oboro, ky)

based on what you've seen of locker if anything would you agree or disagree?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

I don't think he'd be doing what Andy Dalton or Cam Newton are doing. He'd be well-protected. He's run some. But with these receivers and his accuracy, a lot of passes would be on the ground.

Josh C (Louisville)

When are you going to stop hyping the Texans? They have beaten one good time, and lost to one mediocre team. The rest are games that went exactly as expected. Can we quit talking about how awesome they are for finally not underperforming? (This is to counter the inevitable questions you are getting asking why you don't give the Texans any credit, even though you just said you rate them B+)

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

Thanks.

dennis (Virginia)

The front office genius for the Jags lied about his BAP draft philosophy. Shouldn't he have addressed the many other holes before setting gabbert up for failure?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:13 PM)

How long do you want him to wait? Third draft and you have no QB. If there is one you love, you take him. You can't wait for a perfect time. There is no perfect time where you are assured of getting him.

Blake (Jacksonville)

John Chick looks great, doesn?t he? He times the snap count perfectly a lot of the time, and appears to have good athleticism. Do you think he could develop into a key pass rusher for the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

He is a very good player. Colts should have kept him.

kyle (tn)

i saw bits an pieces of chris palmer trying to get cj out into space like payton does/did with bush/sproles. it was fairly great until the second quarter. any chance we see more of this. after all cj did classify himself as a "play maker"

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

Those guys are receivers in a way CJ is not.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Any chance Jason Jones moves back to DT? His time at the DE has been uninspiring and I would rather have him wreak havoc on the inside for 10 healthy games, as opposed to 12-14 very mediocre on the outside.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:15 PM)

Moving him back is admitting a mistake. Admitting mistakes is not generally what new coaches and coordinators do. But I agree, the move was a mistake.

Bennyscrap (Katy, Tx)

There's a huge argument going on with your latest Cushing post. Do you believe it's possible that Cushing's dominance this year could be because he's using PEDs? Thanks in advance.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

I understand why people have questions. I don't think he's risking a year suspension by using anything.

Jeff (Clearwater)

When will TJ Yates finally get the playing time he deserves?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

Funny stuff.

Tia (Jacksonville)

Are Gabberts shortcomings coachable or is it lack of skill?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

Still too early to know.

Blake (Jacksonville)

If the Jags win 7 more games and finish 9-7 do you think they make the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:17 PM)

I don't see seven more wins, so I'll skip the rest.

Maurice (Jacksonville)

Hypothetical: you're playing football in the backyard in the back yard with your crew. Who do you choose as your RB? Me or Arian Foster?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

Arian Foster. Younger, for starters.

Adrian (Houston, TX)

Going away from just the AFC South for a moment; what is the biggest surprise to you this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

Off the top of my head, Cam Newton.

Al (Jax)

The success (so far) of John Chick makes me wonder why more standouts from the CFL aren't signed by the NFL. Is there that much of a difference? Are the best players in the CFL really that much worse than the best coming out of college?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:19 PM)

Yes. It's a league full of guys who were not drafted.

Bill Polian (Indianapolis)

Kuharsky you're one of the lowest members of the food chain and you'll probably be replaced by the rat.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:19 PM)

Wouldn't that mean I'd be eaten by the rat?

Blake (Nashville)

If the Colts were to IR Peyton, would he still be allowed to be on the sidelines and serving in the "coaching" capacity that he currently is? I didn't know if there were rules with the IR and how much interaction those players could have on game day.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:20 PM)

Interact away. No practice, no play. You can be around.

Wayne Weaver (Jacksonville)

Where should I be looking to replace JDR?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:21 PM)

It's a real tough question. I don't think you're getting a proven, big name guy. So then I'd look for the best offensive assistant in the league. Who's that? How about Edgar Bennett from Green Bay?

Sean (Houston)

Paul, I by no means want Reinfeldt fired. I am just wondering how much attention to detail this front office is doing. For years this organization devoted itself to its line play and now that is the single most weakest link to both sides of the ball. They need to stop drafting projects and go for players who are successful at all levels.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

I think you way overstate to say O-line is weakest link on offense. Receivers way worse. O-line is great pass blocking group. They changed philosophies on D-line, sack dropoff year after Jim Washburn departure was to be expected.

Dale (Jacksonville)

If my Jags lose this weekend, will Weaver finally send JDR packing? Also, who do you think we will see coaching next year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

I don't see an in-season move.

Jason (Boston)

Would you start Roddy White, Laurent Robinson, or Dwayne Bowe this week?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

How could you consider Robinson over White or Bowe?

Michael (B-Town)

What was your personal impression on Bob Kravitz's article on Chris Polian and the subsequent response from Dunlevy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:24 PM)

Not a media critic. Thought both were good reads. I do think Chris Polian is unproven.

Blake (Jacksonville)

Could you see Pouz, D Smith, MJD, Knighton, Monroe, and Scobee all making pushes for the pro bowl?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

No. I cannot see six guys from a third-place team making the initial roster of the Pro Bowl. After 30 guys drop out, maybe. Monroe's been good, but definitely won't get a lot of votes.

Carl Spackler (the back nine)

Arian Foster was on the Texans practice squad, wasn't he?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

Yes, for about two months. You're telling me the Colts are going to go through 248 practice squad players and find that one guy?

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Blaine Gabbert might improve some in the second half of the season this year, but he?s really going to need a full offseason to take the next significant step in his development, isn?t he? It?s my understanding that there is so little time during the week in the NFL season to work on installing a game plan much less have a QB be coached up on mechanics, etc.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:28 PM)

Yes. An offseason will be huge for him. Especially since he'll be with new coaches and a new system.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:29 PM)

Three reasons Brian Cushing is going great

Rick (texas)

Arian Foster, Chris Johnson, MJD. You have to start one, bench one, cut one for your team. What do you do?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:30 PM)

Easy, no? Start Foster, bench MJD, cut Johnson.

Josh (HTX)

Bigger need for the Texans in offseason, WR or CB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:31 PM)

I think they will have the luxury of saying they need a WR, a CB and a DT and finding them where they feel they present themselves.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

What's the deal with the Jaguars, anyway? They had such a good offseason! Is it kind of like the Eagles?--Lockout+no OTA's lots of new faces=wait till next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:32 PM)

The Jaguars veteran new guys are on defense, and the defense has been pretty good. But the quarterback needs time. But why don't Cam Newton or Andy Dalton? Receivers, for one.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Brian Robiskie didn?t fare too well in Cleveland, obviously. What is your opinion of him based on what you know and what are the odds he can help the Jaguars WR corps both now and in the future?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:32 PM)

I have no expectations for him. Will be surprised if he does anything.

Rick (Mississippi)

You get to pick the Pro Bowl roster. Who do you select from the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:33 PM)

I pick no one and abolish the Pro Bowl. If I have to pick, I wait until AFTER the season.

Hassleback (LP Field)

When we are 5-7 after the next 4 games, do people panic and scream for Locker?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:33 PM)

Some are doing it now.

javier (houston)

Do you still think titans have a chance in the division or its just titans fans getting their hopes up?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:34 PM)

Anyone two wins out of first with a game against the team in the lead still ahead certainly has a chance.

Blaise (FSU)

After Blackmon and Jeffrey, is Claiborne the next logical pick for jags or do you look elsewhere?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

I can't pretend to know the ins and outs of college receivers at this point.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky: abolish the Pro Bowl? Are you crazy? I've loved those vacations to Hawaii. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

We'll still name a roster. One roster. No replacements. The honor to being a Pro Bowler will be restored. And you still get a week in Hawaii. Big skills competition and awards banquet Saturday.

Colton (Las Vegas)

Do you see a blow-up scenario for the Colts this offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

Define blow up. I have a hard time picturing the Polians out. I can see Jim Caldwell gone.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Not to beat a dead horse here, but regarding Robiskie in Jacksonville: didn?t the Texans cut Tramon Williams at a time when they needed help in the secondary in the worst way? I realize it?s the exception and not the rule, but obviously stranger things have happened. Having said that, I am not expecting much either. Time will tell?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:37 PM)

Tramon Williams was a rookie. Not a veteran who'd proven he couldn't play. Sure, anyone can change with a change of scenery. But the Jaguars need to not bank on Robiskie.

Edwin Turner (Garrison, Texas)

The Texan's Cody/Mitchell nose tandem seem to me to be a glaring weakness in an otherwise stout defense. Why not Watt at the nose?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

I don't see a glaring weakness in the front. But a big improvement at DT would make it even better. Watt is great where he is, so why would you want to mess with that?

Josh M. (Jacksonville)

I liked the article on how Gabbert needs to do better at the little things. Marcedes Lewis should be BIG on these SHORT plays, right?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:39 PM)

Yes. I thought all the MMA training was going to make him even better? But for Chris Johnson, we'd be talking about whether Lewis was too happy to be paid.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Tyson Alualu is having a very nice season considering it?s his sophomore effort and the fact that he?s been playing with a banged up knee. How good do you think he can be if he?s 100% healthy entering next season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:39 PM)

Very good.

Mike (MD)

Better chance of happening; Green Bay goes 16-0 or Colts go 0-16?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:41 PM)

Please read tomorrow's blog entries.

Ernest Byner (Baw-more)

I keep asking you what my firing as Titans RB coach has to do with CJ's struggles (just look at YPC with me and without me). You keep ignoring me! Who do you think you are, Jeff Fisher? We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:43 PM)

A change in position coach doesn't have this big a bearing on production. Since you there's been Kennedy Pola (who left before a game), Craig Johnson and Jim Skipper.

Ryan (Rochester, NY)

If Caldwell is fired, I know you like Fisher as his possible replacement (I agree). But who would you pick as a possible replacement at Defensive Coordinator?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:44 PM)

I don't think they'd hire Fisher, but I think he'd fit because he and Bill Polian and he and Peyton Manning get along. He could coordinate his own defense at first if the offense stayed the same for Manning.

Von M. (Denver)

Clayton said that JJ Watt was the midseason defensive rookie of the year? What gives? Me and Alden in SF have more sacks and seem to be making a bigger impact. Is he better than us?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:45 PM)

I haven't seen you. But I hope voters don't measure it by sack numbers. Watt is not expected to get many sacks.

caleb (oklahoma city)

The Colts just signed former Central Michigan standout QB, Dan Lefevour, do you think he will start a game this season in place of Painter/Orlovsky?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:45 PM)

He's on the practice squad. He's not playing.

jd (NY)

Do you think the Texans splitting time between Kjack and Allen is a good approach? Allen has made the big plays and has 3 picks.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:46 PM)

It's a silly approach.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

What do you put the odds at that Wayne Weaver hires an outside guy as the new head coach next season as opposed to one of the current assistants?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:46 PM)

Very, very high.

Tia (Jacksonville)

If Koetter is offered the head coaching job next year do you think his offensive approach changes?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:50 PM)

Absolutely. I love Koetter. But how could Weaver justify hiring the coordinator of the worst offense in the league?

Matt (Albion, IL)

Best AFC South player of all time?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:51 PM)

Am I counting Baltimore Colts and Houston Oilers?

Yogi (Alaska)

Regarding the hypothetical dilemma the Colts could face if having the #1 pick, which do you think would be more excusable in the end if both were to fail, draft Luck and trade Manning, or trade the pick and keep Manning? As a fan, failing with Luck long term seems to be more acceptable than going all-in on an old QB with neck problems, hoping to get a title within 2 season. What is your take?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:52 PM)

If you don't draft Luck and he's a stud, you face him and watch his successful team for a long time. That's hard.

Tia (Jacksonville)

Top Linebackers, Dline and Secondary in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:54 PM)

Linebackers: Jaguars. Defensive line: Texans. Secondary: Texans. I think.

Blake (Nashville)

With the #1 pick, would you rather have a HOF receiver or a good quality QB like Eli or Rivers but someone that may never reach HOF numbers/status at that position.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:57 PM)

Quality quarterback. Above all else I want a quality quarterback.

Logan (Houston)

What is the deal with Demeco right now, will he get back to 100% this year? Was happy with the ff but his acceleration and agility have seem to really be hindered since the achilles injury. Something the Texans may need to address at the end of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:59 PM)

I would think they expect two years removed he'll be more like his old self.

Corey (D.C.)

Who would you rather start your DEF with, Suh or Revis?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:59 PM)

Suh.

Matt (Albion, IL)

Can you be a great coach but have a bad owner and bad GM therefore the public views you as a bad coach?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

I don't think so. We'd see you making smart moves on Sundays, right?

Justin Timberlake (golf course in Tennessee )

Can I help get the Titans out of being "out of sync"?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

Can't hurt to try.

The Grabster (Jacksonville, FL)

(Whistle blows) Okay, okay, okay, people. Nothing to see here. Let's move along, now. See you next week. Great job everyone.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

Thanks Chief. Appreciate you all coming by. Enjoy the game.
