Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Let's get this party started

Andy (Florida)

Matt: Jets vs Broncos got to be scary game for NY. Short week, travel, altitude and attitude after NE loss. What is your take on this game from a Scouts Inc, perspective?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

No question. I am picking the upset actually. Don't feel SUPER strong about it, but preparing for this DEN O on such a short week is brutal. And the game will be physical. DEN wears them down? That is what I am going with.

JJ (LV,NV) [via mobile]

Who is your favorite player currently? All time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

All time it is Mario Lemieux. NFL Player? Joe Greene or Mel Blount. Currently? Really can't allow myself to have one, but I would say Larry Fitzgerald-from our time together at Pitt.

Shivu (DC)

M-dub. Is this Eagles team the most poorly coached team from a strategy standpoint ever? Blunders: Playing zone coverage with Nnamdi. Running the 'wide-9' as your base defense. I can understand running wide-9 on passing downs, but not every down.

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Their LBs are not tough enough at the POA to play this much Wide 9. And I very much agree with the coverage. Yup, it is a mess.

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Just a thought, but maybe Philly should have hired a defensive coach to coach the defense.

Aggie (TX)

Still not buying the Cowboys after their dominating performance?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Very dominating. Why aren't I buying Aggie? They are strong for sure. The more I think about them, the more I like. Could certainly win the division.

Jeff (Nashville)

Can you take anything away from the Packers' D against Minny? Granted they are awful, but maybe this gets things back on track.

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Yeah, Minny was esp terrible on that specific night too. Still, sure, it is obviously a very good sign, but I wouldn't go crazy yet.

Jake (Miami)

Do you think Sparano will save his job if he gets his team to say 6 -10 or even 5 - 11?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Tend to think so. That ownership is difficult to predict though. But the team obviously is playing hard for their coach. I think that says a lot.

Greg (va )

is eagle coach on a hotter hot seat then his rival mike shanahan?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I do think so-not saying he should be. But expectations were much higher.

Mike (NH)

Hey Matt, with the Chiefs o-line continuing to struggle, do you expect them to switch it up and possibly insert Rodney Hudson into the starting lineup?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I wouldn't object to that, but RT is the big problem. HUGE problem. Was on the air in KC two hours ago and was hoping they could give me answers about J Gaither.

Vic (No Cal)

Do you personally think Green Bay is going to run the table the season? If not, who do you think will take them down. (TB, @DET, @NYG, OAK, @KC, DET). The Chiefs, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

I don't think they run the table. Just too tough to pull off. Could stumble vs DET, NYG or OAK

Josh (CO )

All the talk of the Jest having a rough week, what about Denver. Even though they dont travel, they have to try and get the pass going for thursday against a tough NY jets D right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

What I mean by that is that the Jets played Monday Night-lost more than a day to DEN just with that. And then a long traveling day. And-DEN's O is so different/goofy that they need all the practice reps they can get to prepare their run fits/recognition/etc. But-R Ryan could also be salivating to face a team that can't throw. Put Revis on Decker, who he destroys. Play a 4-4 and move the other two DBs near the LOS if you have to.

James (Indy)

Matty!!!! Long time no appearance on my end. I'm prepared to take the brunt of Dubb.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I'm not talking to you

Aggie (TX)

What has been the difference in the Cowboys running game? OLine play, Tony Fiammetta, or Murray himself?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Good work by you with Fiammetta. He has certainly helped a lot. I think the OL is coming around for sure-very young. But overall, it is all the above, but if I had to pick one it would be Murray. Guy is just running so hot.

Dan (DC)

Does a Jets loss this week mean no playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

I wouldn't say that. I think the final AFC Wild Card spot goes to NYJ or CIN

Dan (DC)

Does Andre Carter have a shot for comeback player of the year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Hmm...Steve Smith? Carter has always been good-when he plays DE in a 4-3. Twice in his career the team he was on went from a 4-3 to 3-4, making him an OLB-he doesn't do that well.

Blake (Houston)

Talk me into Leinart. You can't can you?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

I can't. Will turn in an article that I am working on now tonight with my Leinart thoughts. In the end: Division Winnners, maybe one playoff win at most.

Aggie (TX)

I think the Cowboys pro scouting department has done an excellent job this season with Fiammetta, Laurent Robinson, and Frank Walker off the street!

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Good point! They took some heat with free agency, but those are solid acquisitions for nothing.

Franklin (G-Man) (NC)

Do you think my New York Football Giants will nwin the NFC east? Or do they get a wildcard spot?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Torn more and more between NYG and DAL for the East. I don't have the schedules in front of me, but I do know that DAL's is way easier.

John Fox (Denver)

We are scaleing back our offense against the Jets don't look for us to throw 8 times this week.We may go to the wishbone and only throw 2-4 passes only on 3rd and 30+.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Isn't 3rd and 30 a running down?

J.B. (PA)

Matt Leinart's former college coach took Tavaris Jackson over him. That speaks volumes to me.

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I was really critical of Jackson before the season, but I have little doubt that SEA made the right choice on that decision too.

Brian (Boston)

I know the 49ers have a great formula with their defense, running game and efficient qb play- but do they have enough fire power to keep up with the Packers and Saints?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

I tend to doubt it, but this past week was encouraging against a playoff-type team (NYG). The Giants shut the Niners run game down, but they moved the ball and scored points through the air. Encouraging for sure. With SF's schedule, they should get a 1st round bye. Which means that if they meet GB, it will most likely be in GB in awful weather. With that, they might have a shot.

Bob (Denver)

We've heard a lot of talk about Jets D vs Denver O but what about Jets O vs improving Broncos D with your man Von Miller?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I think Bailey does well vs. Holmes. And I think Miller will terrorize Sanchez. But other than that, I don't like much on that side of the ball for the Broncos. Still-not a Sanchez guy here (in case you didn't know) and I don't see a ton of points overall. That kind of game favors DEN.

John F (Ks)

Who or what is to blame for the 49ers pass defense being ranked 26th?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

I didn't know it was ranked that low and rarely look at such things. I don't think they are poor vs. the pass at all. Guessing, but would say that their stats are not favorable because they are so strong against the run that the Os just chose to attack them with the pass.

Dan (Washington, DC)

One big win and the Cowboys are division favorites? Really? 2 weeks ago they got smoked by the Eagles...

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

I didn't call them favorites. And maybe I should clarify. I do think NYG is the better team. But scheduling really favors DAL. And it looks like Romo's ribs are not bothering him any more-which is huge.

Doug (NH)

Vintage Belichick Sunday night. Can this no name secondary keep it going now that the pass rush seems to have improved?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Who knows. I don't know anything about these guys! But the pass rush should stay decent-but prob not as strong as it was last week.

Matt (NH)

I see Pouncey is back in the rookie watch, has come back from the few games where his play fell off?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Do not look too much into that. This is a really strong crop of Rooks. Ranking them is brutal right now.

Curt (NJ)

With his fractured finger, would you consider Stafford's accuracy to be affected going forward?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

I would have to say so after watching him last week. Wow. Didn't have any touch on the ball. Will it improve? Let's just hope so

Imre (Missoula, MT)

Is the loss of Chris Williams going to put the Bears playoff chances in jeopardy? I think he'd done a great job so far this season, so I am more than a bit concerned...thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Well, I think they will be in good shape when Carimi comes back-then move Louis to LG to fill in for Williams.

Jeff (Nashville)

Lions started 5-0, then went 1-3. Which is the real team? Packers twice, @Saints, @OAK left on the sched...kinda brutal.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Certainly brutal. I don't like their playoff chances. Too many holes in that team right now. Young. No running game. QB is struggling and injured. D is good, but not great vs. run.

James (Indy)

Given the complete and ultimate DISASTER that this Colts season has been, I humbly request forgiveness from Dubb for absences.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Will grant you a pardon...just this once!

Dan (Washington, DC)

Romo's ribs don't play defense. Just sayin'

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

I know. I really do. But it certainly helps a team when their QB is playing well.

Rob (San Antonio)

Best wr tandem Wallace, Brown?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

That is a great one, but if just looking at the two starters, I might take Austin and Dez. GB is quite strong. ATL is too-although White has fallen off a cliff. Total group of Receivers including TE? GB

Adam (Chicago)

Am I crazy to think that the Bears are the biggest threat to the Packers winning the NFC?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Could be. They play GB very tough. Certainly could go up to GB in the NFC Championship Game and get a W.

Shu (The ATL)

Matt, Can you tell Dan in DC to worry about his own sorry team and stop hating on the Cowboys b/c they have a shot to win the division?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Sure. I will pass that along.

Dan (Washington, DC)

Since you love my questions -- here's a tip -- Jimmy Page and the Black Crows, Live at the Greek. Your iPod will love you for it.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

They actually didn't have that on iTunes, so I actually bought the CD. Haven't bought a CD in a LONG time. But got it about two weeks ago-maybe per your request. It's awesome.

Les (Baltimore)

Answers about Gaither. Folks in Baltimore are still wondering what's up with him!

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I don't question the talent one bit. Amazing. But it is injuries/off the field/motivation problems. But wow is KC awful at RT though! Just trying to figure out which of those three issues are keeping him off the field presently.

Larry (Pasco, WA)

Any chance Philip Rivers and the Chargers turn their season around?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Rivers, yes? For sure. I still consider him a great one and very much on Rivers' bandwagon. SD? Looks to me that they are firmly behind OAK right now in the West & maybe, maybe they can challenge CIN or NYJ for that last AFC Wild Card.

Nate (Madison)

Woodson is a lock for the HOF, correct?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Charles? We talked about this a lot on Cover it Live Monday. I think he is deserving, but I wouldn't bet he goes in immediately. Easy to say YES on all great players, but MUCH more difficult to actually pick between those eligible when it comes to vote time. Put Woodson in over Champ or Urlacher?

Kenny (Miami)

Have you noticed any difference in running style of Reggie Bush that has led to recent success or is it all because of the Kim divorce?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

MIA's blocking has been much better. Not seeing a lot of dancing from Bush. But how long will it keep up? He has put together spurts before over his career. Let's see him sustain it-but I do give him credit.

Shu (The ATL)

Do you think that Romo has what it takes to win a SB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Yup

Curt (NJ)

Speaking of HOF, the people saying Devin Hester probably won't make it are out their minds, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Torn on that. Is he better at what he does than Ray Guy?

Jeff (Tampa)

Charles, to me, is a 1st-ballot guy because of the pedigree, hardware, longevity, diverse production (including sacks and TDs), won a SB; everything I think the Hall is seduced by and, in this case, rightly so.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I agree that C Woodson should go. I do. But first ballot? I just bet that doesn't happen. We shall see who he is competing against I suppose.

Aggie (TX)

Is Von Miller an elite player in the making? Pride of Aggieland!

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

No question about it.

Ray Guy (Retired )

HOF is a total sham until I am elected.I was the best ever and change how special teams are looked at

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

I see what you are saying. But do you belong more than Chris Carter or Dermontti Dawson?

Frank (Newark)

Which team is Peyton Manning on next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Indy. With Luck. Deal with that situation the year after.

Jamie (BFE, Kansas)

Answers about Gaither. He came in for a series in the 4th qtr against Denver and dominated. He also plays on FGs. I cannot figure out why he is not on the field more...

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Not getting it all here either. Time to get him out there!

Jason (San Francisco)

Who is the most talented QB in the NFL.... Arm Strength Body Size Movement Mental???

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Gotta be Rodgers, but Ben and Cutler are not far off. Neither is Stafford.

Shu (The ATL)

Tell Ray guy that 4 or 5 snaps a game doesn't justify a yellow jacket.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I will pass that along. But how about the X # of snaps he was exceptional during his career?

Steve (Bristol)

How much credit does Harbaugh deserve with the niners and getting them to play together and simplifying the offesne so Alex Smith can run it effectivelt? Coach of the year if they finish with less than 4 losses?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Coach of the Year. Although Mike Mc might have a bone to pick with that if his Pack go undefeated! I think SF might have been the worst coached team in the NFL last year-and now they are amongst the best.

Boris (Texas)

Do you see the Raiders winning the AFC West?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Sure do

J.B. (PA)

I think Shu may have just made a case against Hester to the HOF as well.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Indeed

Rob (San Antonio)

If a player redefines a position (no matter what position it is) he should be hall eligible. Ray Guy and Hester did that

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Strong argument

Jeff (Tampa)

Since I'm pro-specialists in the Hall, I'd support Ray Guy and then Shane Lechler would probably be next at some point. There are even more placekickers. And a few return specialists-Mel Gray, Brian Roberts.

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

I hear ya, but then guys like C Carter are not in...in order to put someone like that in, you have leave another out

Mike (Brooklyn)

How big is the Mike Boley loss for NYG? I am very worried he's going to miss an extended period of time, and we are going to see more Greg Jones blowing assignments.

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

That is a worry, esp against the pass. Should be worried. Best true 2nd level defender

Shawn (MN)

What do the Vikings have to do to get back to playoff contention next year??

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

They need quite a bit. Needs: #1 WR, LT, a little more interior OL help, NT type, FS-badly, another CB. That list sounds extreme-and it sorta is. But it isn't the most difficult thing to handle and you don't need to land EVERYone of those things to compete.

Boba Fett (Pit of Sarlac)

FUN QUESTION OF THE DAY -- When you look at active NFL players' careers as a whole, who are your top 5? I'm going with (in order): 1. Peyton Manning; 2. Tom Brady; 3. Ladanian Tomlinson; 4. Ray Lewis; 5. Tony Gonzalez. Can you name anyone who'd bump those guys down a notch or two?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Hmmm Boba...I am not going to get into Peyton vs. Brady right now. Brees could be in convo. Peterson & Revis too-very soon. We touched on C Woodson. Freeney? Troy

Sam (Nh)

Is Gronk better than Jermichael? He dominates blocking too.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Better two way TE, but not the better receiver. Just depends what you need from the position. Both are fantastic...but different.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Matt, How impressive has Wiz junior been for the Raiders. Too move over at Center like that and play at a top notch level.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Great stuff. He is right on the fringe of my Rookie Report.

Aggie (TX)

Cowboys drafted Marty B over Jermichael. Imagine JFinley and Witten together.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Crazy. But Finley was very much a work in progress coming out of Texas. High risk/reward pick. And very young.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Tell Boba Fett that being digested over 1,000 is rotting his brain. I thought we all reached the point that we know Brady is better than Manning...unless you prefer guys with .500 playoff records and only 1 ring.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Here we go...

Letty (Jones)

Dolphins have a making of a great line with Long and Pouncey, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Need a RT. But overall, yes. Carey still could be that RT, but he has improved at OG. In the end, 1 more starter away.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

Better QB - John Skelton or Kevin Kolb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Skelton

Andrew (San Jose)

Back to your Q & A on Comeback Player of the Year, I would have to throw in Alex Smith's Name as well. He hasn't been on fire in comparison to Rodgers', but he is keeping his team at the top of the NFC while playing against some decent teams (Eagles, Lions, Giants).

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Nice one. Still would vote for Smith I think.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Any reason for Grossman or Beck to be on the Redskins' roster next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

I really like Grossman-as a #2 who can come off the bench and maybe create a spark

Blake (Nashville)

You mean the same Tom Brady who's backup can go 11-5 in the same system?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I think that is the same Tom Brady they were referencing

Falco Lombardi (Star Fox's side)

Brady and Manning are both top five, though. I think that was Bobba's main point, Dubb.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

But of course they are

Tarek (NYC)

Don't know if you saw that Pats Schedule. But 13-3 and 1st round bye here they come.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

No question. Cake walk.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Okay okay-we are done with Brady vs. Peyton. I never should have opened that can of worms. But Ed HULKali will start throwing flags on you guys if we keep this up! "..like playing cards with my brother's kids."

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub Cutler & the Bears O-line have been playing much better, but do you feel the line will hold up for the rest of the season? Also will they still make improvements to the line in the off-season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Would actually put #1 WR and Safety as bigger needs now over OL for CHI...esp with Carimi still factoring in long term. Well coached-give Tice some credit. Well schemed now-give Martz some credit.

Sam (NH)

Randy Moss seen in Logan(Boston) Airport this morning...

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Oh yeah? I bet he has a lot of friends in that area of the country

T (Boston)

Tombstone!!!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

"I'm sorry. I forgot you were there."

Ed Houchuli (chat ref)

Do I even need to say it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Just let them all know you are here. Feel your presence. Ed is my Luca Brasi

Aggie (TX)

How improved would the Pats offense be if they drafted any of Torrey Smith, Baldwin, Cobb, ....?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Smith and particularly Baldwin would be outstanding. I like Cobb a ton, but he isn't an over the top bomb threat like those other two who would really open room in the middle of the field.

Shu (The ATL)

Better RT now and long term...Tyron Smith or Nate Holder?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

I will go 1. Tyson Smith 2. Nate Solder 3. Nate Holder. Smith has been fantastic. Solder has been up and down, but certainly looks like a keeper. Holder might be your neighbor and can't play dead in a cowboy movie.

Marc (Malden, MA)

You can have Luca, I'll take Neri.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Neri is big time-obviously. Read the book though. Neri-like most of them-derives all his loyalty from money. Luca does not.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

...but I will go to the mattresses with either of those guys any day of the week. Or James Harrison.

Les (Baltimore)

Even with home playoff games I would say the Pats are very vulnerable, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

For sure. Not an elite team, despite whatever their final record says. But...they still could hoist Lombardi though...

Shu (The ATL)

LOL! Can I ghost write a few article for you from time to time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Sure. If they are good, I will take credit for them. Cool?

Nate Holder (next door to Shu in ATL)

put me in, coach

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Just had to post this

Jeff (Tampa)

MW, of course Tyson Smith is the roommate of your neighbor Nate Holder, so give me Tyron Smith with an r.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

OH! Wow, do I ever deserve that! Was actually a typo...I did know that. Seriously, I did! Yeah right Williamson...

Matt Williamson (In My Man Cave)

It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Very well said

Kevin Costner (Dancing With Wolves)

Does Andre Smith have Pro Bowl potential still?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

He does. Playing well. Maybe growing up? Good to hear from you Kevin-Fellow Delta Chi Brother

Marty (Kansas)

If we are talking about special teamer going to the hall. It has got to be Tasker. Was outstading on all 4 special team units.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

I hear ya, but I don't like his chances Marty.

Jeff (Tampa)

MW, no worries... We're all here to keep each other in check.... "Well hell, Doc, I got lots of friends...." Doc: "I don't."

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Best line in the movie. On that note, I am out like Cliff Stout. Great chat. You guys carried it. Bring your A Games again next week.
