OK cool cats, let's rock and roll
Pierre, thanks to you we now know that Gretz is "thinking about" the WC alumni game. We also know the Legion of Doom is confirmed and I assume Mess, Graves, Leetch and Richter are locks. Who else have you heard is in the mix? Mike Gartner and John Vanbiesbrouck for the Rangers? Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte, Mark Recchi, Keith Primeau for the Flyers? What about Mike Keenan "rewarding" Alexei Kovalev with a 10 minute shift out in the elements and then an ice cold beverage waiting for him on the bench?
haha, thanks Jesse. I still don't think Gretzky will play but we'll see. Primeau won't play _ still feeling headaches once in a while from concussion problems that ended his career. Sad. Haven't heard any other players
Pierre, do you think the more I keep telling the public over and over that Bettman "promised us" realignment to the East, the more Bettman will begin to believe it is true. Kind of like George Costanza with a lie.
Well to your defense, it's not you saying it, it's Mr. Illltch
Hi Pierre, Minnesota in first place, just completed a nice road trip, what can we expect going foward? What doyou think needs improvement to keep the team winning? Thanks
Power play MUST improve and overall offense _ both in bottom tier of NHL
Who is the worst NHL Team so far this season?
Columbus and it's not close
Pierre: Claude Giroux, does he have the potential to be a superstar?
No question... spoke with Peter Laviolette last week and the thing that impressed the Flyers coach the most was Giroux's all-around, 200-foot game. It's not just about offense with Giroux
A quarter into the season and the new Sharks look a lot like the old Sharks: incompetent penalty kill, erratic goaltending, frequent lackadaisical play. The fourth-line players don't even belong in the NHL. The third D-pair is still a huge liability. Isn't this season shaping up for another conference final blow-out?
I can think of at least 20 NHL markets that would kill for that roster.Glass half full !
How 'bout them Bruins? Look like a Cup contender again!
En fuego ! En feu !
People are labeling me a goon after the incident over the weekend. Unfair? I am on pace for 40 goals this season...
You do have a little dirty side to you. But coaches like that.
Tyler Seguin looks like a star. Are looking at a top 5 player in the league for the next decade?
at least top 10, yup
Mr. Pierre, I am score sick goal last night verse Colorado. Which between legs move you like better....mine or Matt Duchene?
gotta say Duchene was unreal on that move
Last night was a heartbreaker for the Caps. They played their best hockey in so long, but as they've learned in the past 4 Aprils and Mays, it only takes a second to lose a hockey game and they let down immediately after Brouwer put in the first one. Sure it's only November, but when you see games like this how can you not be worried about the Spring?
Deep breathes, deep braethes
With no news on new ownership in Phoenix and the GM Meetings quickly approaching, is this the end for the Coyotes?
UM, GM meetings were yesterday :)I guess you mean Board of Governors (owners) meeting Dec. 5-6 in Pebble Beach. Coyotes have until end of January to get it together on the ownership front or else they're gonners
Who win round 2 b/w the Canucks and Black Hawks today? Also, will the Black Hawks keep the Canucks from scoring 5 PPGs?
Hawks 5, Canucks 4, 11-round shootout and Dan Carcillo gets the winner
will there be any change to the current division set up since it appears detroit will be coming east? also, is detroit the only team coming east?
yes _ when BOG meets Dec. 5-6 they will vote on re-alignment. There's a four-conference set up that's garnering some traction... we'll see
who are your top 5 calder trophy candidates?
Craig Smith, Nugent-Hopkins, Enroth, Larsson, Luke Adam
Hey Pierre, So whats the deal with the Sharks Penalty Kill? Todd has already given up using third and fourth liners and gone back to Jumbo, Pavs, and Patty. Is this an area where Wilson will seek to improve through trade?
I think the plan all along was for the Sharks to try and improve their bottom-six forward group via trade before Feb. 27
Hey Pierre, Sharks fan here. I read on ESPN that Wilson is receiving calls on Nitty once he is healthy. While I am happy to see the sharks move him (only becasue Griess has played pretty well, and Nitty deserves a better opp) what can the market be for a career spot starter coming off injury? Any chance we can get a third line PK player?
ya you read that in my blog, LOL, but thanks for remembering the author, LOLNot sure what Nitty would fetch to be honest
First Penguin to bring a new trophy home to Pittsburgh - Fleury winning the Venzina, Letang the Norris, or Staal the Selke?
Letang the Norris
Rangers looking good! Though next few games (Montreal, Florida, Philly) should be a nice test for them. Thoughts?
Nice balance from forward group. Callahan is the engine up front. Richards playing his best hockey. Lundqvist is nicknamed the Kings for a reason. Surpirised by blue-line play
Hey Pierre. I was wondering about the situation on Long Island. I viewed Matthew Barnaby's video this morning about Jack Capuano being on the hot seat. While I do agree with Barnaby on most of his points, why should Capuano shoulder the blame? He seems like a good coach, but it also seems that the Islanders suffer from a lack of depth. I know it's the coach's job to motivate the players and have them show up every night, but at what point is upper management made responsible? As an Islander fan, possibly going through two coaches in two years would be an all time low. I guess I'm just wondering at what point Garth Snow is held responsible for the shortcomings of this team, regardless of his relationship to owner Charles Wang. Is there a future for the Islanders Pierre?
Call me crazy but I have a feeling the Isles will turn this around.... Check back with me in two weeks
What are the Islanders doing?- they lost 10 out of 11 and are last in the east again. What is Garth Snow waiting for next summer to make a trade? He never makes an in-season trade....this seems like a replay of last season.....what a joke. At the least Capuano should be fired. What do you think? sorry for the rant, just frustrated that my team doesn't like to spend money on UFA's or take salary back in trades. I remember Snow held on to Biron too long a few seasons ago and they got stuck with him - Will Nabokov be traded soon? Columbus or Toronto?
Three-goalie set up makes ZERO sense. They should dump Nabokov
Pierre-If the Devils aren't in the top 8 by the trade deadline do you think that Lou will try to move Parise or do you see the Devils hanging onto him regardless and only loosing him if he hits the open market? He would really look nice on Datsyuk's wing....
Gave up a long time trying to predict what Lou Lamoriello would do. He's not cut from same cloth as any other GM. Impossible to know what he'll do
NY Ranger nation is going crazy!!!! 7 wins in a row. What are the realistic expectations for this team? Can they contend for a cup this year?
Carolina and Boston have won Cups since the lockout without having teams that were perceived as top-notch contenders. It's more true than ever that once you get into the top-8 dance, anything can happen
Was signing Hagman a desperate move for the Ducks?
They needed something ! At half the price ,not a bad waiver pickup
With Kings callups due to injuries if Voynov and Loktionov shine and the Kings offense comes alive what do the Kings do to keep these kids in the lineup?
I really like Voynov's game. I think he's up to stay
With my rangers off tonight, I will be watching Chicago win and Buffalo win...am I right?
If I knew that I'd be handicapping in Vegas :)
Which pacific division star goes way more unnoticed than they should: Jamie Benn, or Anze Kopitar?
Probably Benn. Not sure people realize how unbelievable he is
hey pierre love the work you do, what do you think about coburn's new contract and how do you think that effects the possible resignings of carle, voracek, and simmonds?
Coborn got what the market pays right now. Decent deal. I believe Flyers and Carle camp are talking. So we'll see if they can get a deal done or not
Thoughts on the Bruins' turnaround?
Pierre, My friend hope your doing well. Couple seasons ago you told me to put the bottle down when I said the coyotes will be a legit contender for seasons to come.. Well here we go again? my 1st rant Why not love for the desert dogs? Who else do we have to beat before people say wow coyotes are for real? 2nd- it is a horrible move that Mike Smith isnt added to the NHL All Star Game Voting. He has had a stellar year so far in what many experts *cough* you said the coyotes would only be as good as smith would allow them to be.. well 4th in the conf and only 1pt back of dallas.. Yet he isnt even mentioned. I promise i'm almost done now... last thing Please please please tell Ryan Miller to stop complaining. If he didnt want to get *accidently* run into DONT LEAVE THE NET!!!!!!! That is all... Come down to phoenix the weather is nice, tickets are cheap, and we have plenty of GREAT HOCKEY!!!!
haha, I think I remember that.Coyotes are playoff contenders, yet, but not Cup contenders
Pierre,I'm excited for the VS move to NBC sports shortly after the new year. I'm guessing that more playoff games will be on national television in the spring with this switch. My real question though is will NBC sports potentially be more widely available on TV than VS was? I feel like this would be a huge step in making hockey an easier sport to watch in the US
Cory, not really for me to talk about TV since I'm in the business :)
With players these days being bigger and faster, do you think increasing the rink size would help? It could allow more space, more creativity, less collisions and possibly less concussions.
Bigger rinks would lead to fewer injuries, yes. However, bigger rinks in Europe have not shown to bring up scores. In fact, bigger international ice (I covered six mens' IIHF world hockey championships in Europe) actually makes defensemen stay back more and pinch less at the opposing blue-line for fear of getting caught. The trap also just backs up on the big ice.
Pierre, have you ever had the "Roxy Flu" in Vancouver? After reading the ESPN magazine article, now I am disappointed I didn't go there during the Olympics. It must have been epic.
I cannot confirm nor deny that I've been there :)
What has Avery brought to the Rangers since his recall?
Bonjour mon ami,Pardon mon français mais, est-ce que Brian Gionta peut parler aux mÃ(c)dias de MontrÃ(c)al en français?
Je crois que non
Pierre, What is wrong with Seymon Varlmov? he looks lost out there.
Teammates aren't helping him much either
Hey Pierre,So how about Toews? After chatting about him last week, he really lit it up. Maybe if I repeat Datsyuk 3 times a la Beetlejuice, he'll start lighting it up as well! Here's hoping... Datsyuk, Datsyuk, Datsyuk!
ok you've got your air time, there you go :)
If the Coyotes leave (and as someone who enjoys road trips there, I hope they don't), where is their destination?
Destinations I know the league has on its radar: Quebec City, Seattle, Kansas City, Las Vegas
Pierre, other than me (who trademarks the 'stache year round), who do you think has the best Movember showing so far? I like Pascal Dupuis going with the "Orange County Choppers" look. But his coach Bylsma looks weird.
Brian Burke's grey moustache scares me
do you think anyone could overtake neil yakupov for the first overall pick in the draft, barring any injury?
The draft isn't my area of expertise but here's Craig Button's latest rankings at TSN, http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=49649
Are you surprised at all by the coyotes fast start. I, myself thought they would fall to the bottom of the league after Bryzgalov left. Who do you think deserves the credit for their start so far?
Never surprised with Dave Tippett behind the bench. Don Maloney told me before the season is his team could get top-15 goaltending they'be ok. So far, so good
besides Lucic hit on miller, what other goalie runs this year has made it necessary to make goaltender safety all of sudden a hot button item?
Really none other. Even Burke said he didn't consider Gionta/Reimer as the same thing
What is the current asking price for Cody Franson. I am looking for a D-men right now. He'd be a good BC boy to bring home and another attractive piece of asset for Shea Weber to convince him to sign with us in the future. BTW, Pierre, next time you come to Vancouver, I'll take you out to Gotham Steakhouse. I know now you like your steak RARE, like all men should eat their steak!
Leafs a want a decent player in return, not just a draft pick
Is this finally the year Patrice Bergeron wins the Selke? He should have won last year and didn't even get nominated.
well he was on my official Selke ballot last year I can tell you
Why won't I shut up? The amount I'm whining makes it no suprise my team didn't respond to Lucic's blindside headshot to me.
I'm just surprised yo have time to join my chat :)
Maybe i'm overreacting but I feel Shanahan needs to come down hard on Stewart. Granted Kronwall is ok and Stewart is a first time offender but that hit is more dangerous than any open ice shot to the head. From that distance and from behind you are talking about spine and neck injuries. Dumb play
I think it's worth a game or two in my opinion. We'll see
There are rumors swirling that Columbus is interested in Tuukka. The only way I think the Bruins trade him is if it's for Rick Nash. What do you think happens?
My TSN colleague Bob McKenzie reported last night during our segment that Columbus phoned Boston about Rask and the answer was NO
will the Bs bounce back from the slow start or would you stick a fork in them
They have bounced back
do you think the kings are legit? how far do you see this squad going?
playoff bound for sure. Would like to see them add one more piece in top six for me to feel better about them
Pierre which will happen first Matt Cooke hat trick or a chance to see you on the ice at the all star game?
well, I'll be in the rink at the all-star game, does that count?
Please tell me my Ducks are a better team than this?
With the Penguins playing so well in Crosby's absence they have the luxury of not rushing hi back to the lineup. But having been cleared for contact, I feel like he should have returned by now. The Pens say it's a doctors call, but is it really? Is this a health issue, not wanting to rush him back issue, or a we just want to ride the wave with what we got right now issue?signed, probably the only person in Hawaii who loves hockey
He's not ready yet. When he's ready, he'll tell the world. Let's move on folks !
Sean Coutourier is making Holmgren look like a genius. What's his potential top 5 two way centre
yup going to be a good one. He was actually a kid that a year ago people had higher on the draft lists and he dropped in the second half. His loss was Philly's gain
Does Quebec have the disadvantage of how the Winnipeg situation played out? By that I mean will the NHL be more likely to sell the team to a West Coast market that way they don't have to deal with all the realignment talk.
nope, that won't factor in is my understanding
If Quebec City is a possibility for the Coyotes, how soon would a new arena be built? And do you suppose they would be called the Nordiques again?
yes _ new rink supposed to be ready in 2-3 years
Coming into the year defense seemed to be the biggest concern with the Minnesota Wild, especially with the departure of Burns. What is your impression of the incredibly young guys on the Wild's blue line this season?
better than I expected
So is the carriage turning into a pumpkin or do the Leafs just need their #1 goalie? Thanks for the chat! Merci beaucoup
I think they're a better team than a year ago but yes they miss Reimer. In the end, it's a team that's going to battle for 7-8 in the East. They're not going to challenge Boston or Buff for first in the NE
Ray Shero has a knack for making big deals at the trade deadline. With the current track the Penguins are on, do you see him pulling the trigger on another deadline blockbuster this year?
Right now he's just hoping to get his lineup together and healhty for the first time since Jan 1 !
Which Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team is better. Detroit, or Washington?
They're both Cup contenders
As a frequent sufferer of the "Roxy Flu" myself, I CAN INDEED confirm that LeBrun not only has been there, but has also taken to the stage shirtless to sing Honeymoon Suite cover songs with the house band and Jeremy Roenick.
Believe me when I say I've never taken my shirt off in public. I wouldn't make people endure that.In all actuality, I've never been to Roxy's, believe it or not.But yes, I do love to sing Karoake in bars. My favorite tune to belt out if Come On Feel the Noise by Quiet Riot as well as Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi. Too much information?
How about Franson for Schneider or Bernier? Not enough for the Leafs to give up or pretty fair?
Matt, are you drunk this early in the day???Getting Schneider or Bernier will cost high-end, big-time talent
Any update on Crosby? I may not be a Pens fan, but I'm a hockey fan and the game is 1000 times better with him playing.
Pens said today he's not playing tomorrow
Despite the Blackhawks doing well recently, what would you do to improve their power play conversion? Surprised that it has been poor with Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp and Leddy(as of late).
I spoke to Stan Bowman about the PP yesterday at the GM meetings. He said the second unit has been better than the first unit. Sometimes skilled players try to make pretty plays instead of making the best percentage plays. Back to basic boys !
Wouldn't a 4 conference layout with divisional playoffs mean that it's possible an inferior 4th team in one conference gets in the playoffs over a superior 5th team in another conference?
yes.. just like it was when NHL had four-division system in 1980s and 90s
Duchene's goal... or Geno's goal from last night? Duchene's one move beats Dman and Goalie... or Malkins two separate moves to go five-hole and silly deke? or maybe Letang's goal off the rush?
Duchene's goal was the best of the nigh, heck, the month so far
they will challenge for bottom four playoff spotI chatted with Hitch this morning, here's the blog:http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/12340/daily-debate-double-trouble-in-st-louis-and-minnesota
The Blues have looked like a different team ever since Ken took over. Do you see them challenging for a top-4 spot in the conference?
sorry that last answer was for this question, LOL
Pierre singing Bon Jovi? Must remove that image from my head. Any chance the Avs don't resign Duchene? Get the feeling they aren't happy with his effort on the defensive side of things, still a bit of a maturity issue?
Hey, I can do a good Jon Bon.Definitely some friction between coach and Duchene
Hi Pierre,Enjoy your work. I disagree with you on Islanders turning the season around. As a diehard Islander fan, what happens if the team falls out it by Christmas. Firing Capuano makes it 2 coaches fired within 1 year. Islanders don't have significant assets to make a big trade. At what point can we claim that Snow's rebuilding plan has failed. It seems like Edmonton which started their rebuild later is further along. I know Snow will never be fired because Wang is a clueless baffoon, but enough is enough already.
I mean, if Isles miss playoff again, I don't see how Wang justifies keeping Snow on board. Agreed
Possibly, but would the return of McDonald and Perron vault them into the top 4?
To get into the top four you have to be ahead of either Detroit or Chicago given that the other two seeds are taken by Pacific and Northwest. That's not to mention that Pacific has most competitive division in hockey and they might have two of top four seeds
Hi Pierre. What's the deadline to the Canes getting rid of Maurice?
I think he's definitely on the hot seat.... no question... Spoke with Jim Rutherford last week and while he was NOT talking about Maurice, he said in general that the next two weeks would be very important as to whether his team would need changes or not.... Read into that what you will
Bigger surprise, Rangers success or Columbus disaster
Pierre, I heard you were talking about me so I decided to join the chat. Remember if you are going to do karaoke to one of my songs, you have to go 100% for the high notes on the chorus and show a little chest hair like I did throughout the 80s. But Dan from Toronto above did confirm that you used to have some sweet feathered hair back in the day.
I had a good hockey mullet in the late 80s and early 90s when I was playing for the Hearst Lumberkings :)Also put a check mark on the chest hair :)
Since winning their first 7 games, why has the Capitals struggled? Could it be that Overchkin numbers are not up to his standards as I am surprised that he has not scored a goal at home.
Spoke to GM GM last week. Said it's amazing how team struggles when Mike Green is out of the lineup
FYI my blog on the best rivalry in hockey resuming tonight, http://espn.go.com/nhl/gameoftheweek
What will help Toronto more, a new coach or a new goalie? or both?
A healthy James Reimer
OK puck fans, thanks for joining me again this week. Enjoyed it as always. Especially the karoake talk.Later !
