Will the Pac-12 be able to repair its image after early-season letdown by UCLA and Arizona St? What chance does UW have of knocking off Duke in MSG?
I don't think the image of the Pac-12 was all that good to begin with - but it's certainly better than it's been the last few years. An Arizona State loss isn't going to shock anyone, but UCLA's situation certainly hurts the league's image, without question. Yes, I think Washington could upset Duke - but only if Tony Wroten cuts down on those TO's and has a good game.
What are your thoughts on Kentucky after seeing them against a quality opponent, in your Jayhawks, last night? I was impressed with their defensive effort in the 2nd half.
My thoughts are that Kentucky is on a completely different level than Kansas. You had future lottery picks guarding walk-ons and transfers from Loyola Marymount and Lamar. This team could be - and probably should be - better than the 2009-10 bunch.
plumlee brothers: the softest, most overrated "big" "men" in at least the ACC (i.e. cant combine for double digits in points or rebounds). how much trouble will that cause duke this season with 5 games against osu, unc, and fsu (3 top 4 scorers in frontcourt, each averaging at least 9.5 ppg); and of course later on in march when it really counts? or will duke be another super guard-oriented team (despite austin rivers' early struggles against a real team)?
I don't think the Plumlees are terrible. And I'm sure they're overrated, because I haven't seen many people rating them very high lately. lol. But, yes, Duke's strength will have to be its guards. I'm not going to get down on Rivers just yet. It takes some freshmen longer than others. Just ask Harrison barnes.
How bout them Memphis Tigers!? New Trainer has done the team a ton of justice. They all looked extremely fit and durable. Especially Witherspoon! The kid is so versatile! I hope he can remain healthy and continue to play like that all year. he is the glue on a team full of gunners.
I know Memphis was going to be good - but I didn't expect them to look THAT good. Wow. That was impressive. So much depth, and Thomas is a really nice addition.
How far can this Gonzaga go in the tournament this year?
If VCU and Butler can make the Final Four, then Gonzaga can, too. I think America is going to fall in love with Pangos. This team should stay in the rankings all year.
Do you believe Ole Miss can make the tournament if Jelan Kendrick is as good as advertised?
Hmmm. Maybe. I can at least see them being a bubble team. They've got no shot to beat UK and probably not Florida. But if they take care of biz-nass in non-confernece and then split with Alabama, Miss St and Vandy ... sure it could happen. Again, they just need some quality wins.
hey what do you think the terps do this year and in this tourney
I'm not too high on Maryland this year. There just aren't enough pieces. But they could still finish fifth or sixth in a mediocre ACC
Big fan of your work Jason ! Was Thomas Robinson of KU overrated a little coming into this year? Last night against the length of Kentucky he didnt stand out as an all american type player?
I don't think Robinson was overrated. He's a big-time prospect who will probably be a top 10-15 draft pick. Chad Ford, our NBA Draft Insider, said scouts were raving about him after last night's game. I thought he had a decent showing, especially with all the double teams he faced.
Nice job by Elon. Then again, I think a lot of people are going to beat South Carolina.
If Kentucky can put together two halfs similar to what they did against Kansas can North Carolina even hang?
Sure, UNC can hang. The Tar Heels are just as good as UK, in my opinion. In fact, they may be even better, at least at the moment. that could change as UK's players gain experience during these next few months.
What is the coolest arena you've been to...and Rock Hawk Jayhawk is a cop out...
Besides Allen Fieldhouse, the "coolest" arena I've been to is Cameron Indoor Stadium, just because it's so different.
Do you see Syracuse in the final four? Or even winning the big east over uconn, pitt, and louisville?
No and no. I like UCONN in the Big East. Love the Orange but don't have them in the Final Four
Enjoy your Kings Court write ups, very entertaining, btw did you catch Bob Knight drinking a beer during the Duke game ?
Haha. I was wondering that, too! I'm assuming it was apple juice. :)
Kevin Pangos had a monster night for the Zags against Washington State. Was his performance a fluke or a sign that he's the next great guard for Gonzaga?
I don't expect him to hit nine 3's every game, but I also don't think it was a fluke. Next great Gonzaga guard.
Do I have a chance at winning in MSG this weekend with Parrom back?
Coach Miller - beating St. John's in NY won't be easy ... but you should win that game. No excuses. Don't like your chances against Miss St. though (if that's who you end up playing)
who is going to win the puerto rico tournament?
Im going with Alabama
Who will be the better SF at the end of the year, Harrison Barnes or Quincy Miller?
I'll go with Barnes, just because of his poise and the fact that he's gaining confidence, which is scary. But, boy, does Miller look good. Maybe the most talented player Baylor has ever had. Either him or Perry Jones
Who should be in Kentucky's starting line-up? We've had a different one each game so far. Follow-up question: is there anyway we could petition the NCAA to change college basketball to 6-on-6?
I'd go with Lamb, Kidd-Gilchrist, Jones, Davis and Teague. How about 7-on-7?
do you think there is a surprise team out of the A10 this year...not counting either Xavier or Temple as a surprise.
Tough call but I couldn't believe what SLU did to SIU last night.
What are the chances Mississippi State becomes a legit contender in the SEC? Will Sidney ever become consistent? And can Hood be in the same breath as the other top SEC freshman?
A contender, as in for the SEC title? Not gonna happen as long as Cal is at UK. But MSU has top 25 talent, which is why I couldn't believe they lost to Akron. I'm not giving up on the Bulldogs though. They need to win this Coaches vs. Cancer tourney in NY this weekend. They're the best team there.
Great to see Coach K get number 903... but this Duke team worries me - they seem to lack the killer instinct. Against overmatched MSU and Belmont teams, they got up big in the second half but let them back in the door. Do you see this team gaining that killer instinct sooner or later?
Sure. it's early and they're breaking in new players and guys that haven't played big roles in the past. Give 'em time. Beating MSU in that fashion was pretty impressive IMO. The Spartans are mean and physical and Duke didn't back down
No question, just a suggestion, get ahead of the curve on the Washington Huskies. Two scoring stars (Ross & Wilcox), two great point guards (Gaddy
Lots of love out there for Washington. I need to hop on that bandwagon. Maybe they should be the Pac-12 favorite
So we've seen a game on an air craft carrier...do you think that location can be out done?
Not until they figure out a way to play a game on the moon. How about a game in the middle of the Vegas strip? That'd be fun.
Are the Cal Bears better than their current ranking?
Maybe a little. they definitely deserved to be ranked. But I'm not sure who I'd move them ahead of at this point.
Shoot ... I wish I had a list of past Maui winners handy. It definitely says a lot about your team if you can get through that thing unscathed. I remember being there in 2002 when KU lost in the first round to Ball State. That team finished 33-4 and made the Final Four.
How many bids do you see the Big East having this year - the conference as a whole coming off of a record high 11 bids?
Maybe not that many. Pitt, UCONN, Syracuse, Marquette, Louisville and Cincy for sure. WVU, Nova, Notre Dame and Georgetown will be in the mix. So maybe eight or nine
Does Ohio State have to go deep(past the Sweet 16) this year to keep Thad Matta from developing a reputation of not being able to take talent and have great success. Two straight years of losses to lower seeds before the Elite Eight.
If people say that about him it's unfair. The main coached in the NCAA title game. How many coaches can say that? Only one team wins it all. It doesn't mean everyone else is a failure.
Who could be this year's Butler? Could it be...Butler?
Belmont, Creighton, Wichita State ... maybe one of those.
Who would you rather have on your frontline? Kidd-Gilchrist, Jones, and Davis or Henson, Barnes, and Zeller?
Henson, Barnes and Zeller. A sophomore, junior and senior.
Hey Jason, great work my man. Is Duke going to be upset in a non-conference game this year? If so, who do you think has the best chance?
I think they'll lose a game in Maui and also at Ohio State. No shame in losing in Columbus, though. It'll be good for them
Hey Jason! Great stuff in the chat last night! The thing that struck me most last night with UK that I didn't see mentioned, is that this team seems comitted to the defensive end of the ball much quicker than the previous two UK teams. Am I wrong in my assessment? How scary is it they are already this comitted to defense considering their ceiling?
Tough to tell how good they are defensively, because KU just isn't very good right now and has no idea what they're doing offensively. Still, cal doesn't receive nearly enough credit for getting his guys to defend year after year. That's not easy to do - especially with high-profile, NBA-ready freshmen.
What do you think about Alabama? Do you think we are 25 win team if we can shoot consistently? We have a solid defense.
Absolutely. But I may change my mind if the Crimson Tide doesn't win the Puerto Rico Tipoff
What do you make of the early season struggles of UCLA?
Shocked. I thought they'd be much better.
Can Rodney Hood from MSU become a top freshman in the SEC?
He won't outshine any of the Kentucky guys. And I'm not sure he's as good as Beal at Florida. Probably not. I need to see more at this point. He's a stud, though. No question.
I can tell you like your food - In your recent addition you added Jefferson's in your top five wings in the country - Have you ever been to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo NY, the birthplace of the buffalo wing? Oh by the way Go Orange!
I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never been there. It's on my bucket list. I've read articles, seen snippets on TV ... gotta go. I hear they have a wing festival in Buffalo each year. that's what I really wanna do
Belmont, argueably better than a lot of teams in the top 25 but yet they don't get any love from voters. Despite two close losses to Duke and Memphis do you think Belmont could get the love they deserve? And what if Duke and/or Memphis came to the Byrd Cage instead of Belmont being on the road, do you think the out comes would have been different?!
Belmont is a heckuva team but I wouldn't look for them in the top 25 anytime soon. That doesn't mean they can't do great things though.
After watching OSU against the underachieving Florida Gators last night I am a bit concernd about OSU's lack of size along the baseline besides Sullinger. Teams with some athletic big men could be trouble for the Bucks.
I was thinking the same thing. North Carolina and UK would give them fits, it would seem
Can a Mizzou fan stuck in Orange country get some love? CAn the Tigers make the dance playing 4 guards and when will we hear about the Miami allegations being finalized so we know if we have a coach or not?
Missouri can make the dance. They could finish anywhere from 2-4 in the Big 12.
Wolfpack still top 5 ACC team?
Sure. why not?
Who is the best player/team that no one is talking about?
I think Florida State could scare some people. And I really like Marquette
Jason,What are your thoughts on Xavier this year and will you be at the Cintas Center at all?
I think Xavier will win the league - again - and be even better than lsat year. Don't have the schedule mapped out very far but I hope I can make it there soon.
Besides North Carolina who on Kentucky's schedule do you see giving them problems because I believe if they hand North Carolina with ease this early in the season that they have a chance to go undefeated and win the natl championship.
Florida is really, really good and Mississippi State has enough talent to hang around a while. Maybe Vanderbilt, too. UCONN could be tough in the tourney if UK faces them.
hello, what are your thoughts on the memphis tigers? predictions? tournament run? and what kind of team they will be this year?
Memphis should win conference USA with ease and, as long as they stay away from UNC and UK, anything is possible in the tourney. This is a legit top 10 team in what looks to be a very good year for college hoops.
Jason, after seeing Ohio State last night and Duke against M.State....what do you see happening in the showdown in Columbus?
I think Ohio State wins by about 5 points
what do u think Jason, can Tom Crean get his 4th road win in 3 years at evansville tonight?
lol. if he doesn't .... well, that'd be bad.
Who has the most upside by the end of the season.. UNC or Kentucky?
Wow. Tough call. UK's upside may be a TAD higher, but not much.
Jason, HELP!!! I've lost the locker room, the players will not listen to me and are playing with no heart. What am I going to do? I have to turn it around quickly or Shabazz will want no part of Westwood.
Bring back Kerry Keating
What does Uconn need to repeat, and do you it will hurt them that the mid/bottom of the big east is not strong?
This UCONN team will be better than the one that won the title last season. What do they need to do to repeat? Stay away from UNC and UK and hope that Calhoun can develop Drummond and Daniels into big-time players in a hurry.
SIU has looked absolutely awful their first couple games. Will they finally get rid of Lowery after this season?
I can't see how they can't make a move
Robinson got under Terrance "Look how fake tough I am" Jones skin pretty good. I like him just for that.
Robinson is on my "Guys You Wouldn't Want to Meet in a Dark Alley" team. A first-teamer.
hey jason what do you think of syracuse so far this season? who do you think wins next wednesday between syracuse and virginia tech? and who are you really early final 4 teams? thanks
I think Syracuse is really good and stands a decent shot at winning the Big East. I like their chances against Virginia Tech.
Who rocks a unibrow better, Davis or Bert from Sesame Street?
I actually think Davis may have dethroned Bert.
Why do ESPN writers/analysts always underrate Arizona every year? They weren't picked to win the Pac-12 last season. No one thought they would get past Texas in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, much less Duke. Now this year, they're "too young, no Derrick Williams, Turner is struggling". Completely ignoring that Sean Miller has overachieved every single year of his coaching career. When will Arizona get some respect?
They lost williams and jones and dropped two exhibition games - and they're still ranked 16th in the country. I'd call that respect.
Do you think Nebraska has a chance to make it to the big dance out of the Big Ten this season?
yes I do. the big ten is down and this could be doc saddler's best team. the difference is bo spencer, the playmaking guard Nebraska has lacked since T. Lue
Will Belmont still be considered a serious threat come march?
Gosh yes. That team is good. Memphis was a bad matchup for them.
Hey there friend. Why is it that Cal, UCLA and Arizona have been ranked so far this season, but my team can't get any love from the pollsters? Aren't we the best team on the West coast?
I think that'll change soon, coach.
Give me an unranked team who could end up in the elite eight
Washington, Miss State, Creighton ... you never know
Can Kansas rebound and post a good showing in Maui?
yes. The Jayhawks got a good draw. Georgetown is rebuilding and, if KU beats the Hoyas, they'll play either struggling UCLA - or Chaminade (don't laugh. It could happen). Anything less than a title game appearance should be considered a disappointment.
Ohio State....looked good for the last 10 minutes of the first half and first 17 minutes of the second half. How do you see them stacking up against Duke, and then potentially Carolina and Kentucky?
Ohio State is better than Duke but not UK or UNC
would Memphis give Duke a good game?
yes, I think Memphis may even beat them right now
Should we be concerned about Michigan State through two games? What can we take away from two tough loses?
No the Spartans will be good and already are in some respects. I think you should be encouraged more than anything. I know I am
When UK and UNC meet. Who do you see winning? And which players on each squad have to have big games for their team to win? Also if you had to pick a cinderella for this coming NCAA tourney who would it be and why? btw love your articles.
I think UNC will beat them early but it could be a different story later in the year
Who do you have as your final four, as of today?
UK, UNC, UCONN and Florida. Boring, I know
Who wins the Maui Invitational? any sleepers?
I'll go out on a limb and take Memphis
What are your expectations for Purdue this year?
I think the Purdue team you see now won't look anything like what you'll see by mid-January
The ACC is the last undefeated conference. Doesn't mean theyre any good, but avoiding the terrible upsets has to be a good sign, right
Maybe, but it's still a weak league this year IMO
Would you call IU a possible tourny team when they beat UE tonight at Evansville? UE did beat Butler...
Nah, they'll need more than a win over Evansville before it's time to talk tourney
who do you see taking over for coach K in 5, 10 years, however many he's got in him....I'd like to see Johnny Dawkins, but he hasn't had too much success as a head coach yet.....Wojo, Collin, Caple, or dare I say someone from outside the program?? thanks jason
I'd hire Sean Miller. Seriously.
I saw this stat last night and it floored me. Bob Knight coached 1 NBA All-Star in his entire career(Isiah Thomas). What do you make of this stat? Did more with less? Never had great talent?
Shows you why he's the best of all time
Saint Joe's basketball is looking good so far... one game that is... any chance they beat Ga Tech?
Absolutely. G-Tech doesn't have much.
Who wins in Kansas City-Cal-ND or Mizzou?
With the WCC being 3-1 vs. the Pac-12, which conference do you think is better on the west coast?
I"ll still go with the Pac-12 from top to bottom. Sorry
Though Florida lost, I saw a great team out there playing, especially their frontcourt with Murphy and Young. Do you think Patric Young could be the best frontcourt player in the SEC at the end of the season?
He's improved SO much, but no, I don't think he'll be better than Anthony Davis.
Who do you see winning the upcoming Coaches vs Cancer? Arizona and Kevin Parrom's return to NYC would make a great story especially considering the fact that his mother and grandmother just passed away from cancer last month
That would make a great story, without question. I think Miss State is the best team there in terms of talent.
Fantasy game: you've got two coach Caliparis, one behind the '07-'08 Memphis team and the other behind the current Kentucky team. Who wins?
This UK team is better - or should be by March.
Jason, if given the choice, would you rock a unibrow like Davis'? I would...
It would all depend on how the ladies reacted
Did think that with Coach Cal's short rotation will hurt Kentucky come tourney time?
Nah. Not at all.
Best team on the west coast? Cal, Zags, or someone else?
Thanks for stopping by everyone. Let's do it again next week.
