Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Greetings folks. Thanks for coming by. Hope it's sunny where you are like it is outside my window. Onward...

Josh (Jacksonville)

How much of an impact will the loss of Mathis for the season be on the Jags defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I fear it will hurt them. When Derek Cox was out and Will Middleton played early it wasn't good.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Nice piece to drop on us right before the chat. Do you have a gut favorite for Jacksonville's next head coach based on those you gave us? Gruden jumps out at me but I fear that may just be name recognition.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I'd actually be intrigued by Edgar Bennett in Green Bay, who recently moved from running backs to receivers. I think he could get a good young QB guy to join him.

Jas (Canada)

Assuming the Colts draft Luck and decide to cut Manning even if healthy to avoid paying him zillions of dollars, what teams would chase Manning as a free agent? Gotta a be a contender team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Denver and Miami are the first two that jump to mind. I cannot imagine the Colts letting him go outright. Pay him and get something for him at the very least.

Kyle (DC)

If you were the Jaguars QB Coach, what would you tell Gabbert to focus on improving in this weeks game against the Browns?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Seems like it starts with footwork and pocket presence. Pete Prisco wrote today they are putting him with his back to the defense too much. So more shotgun too.

Matt (Albion, IL)

How much does it change a receivers timing go from a right-handed QB to a left-hander? Predictions on how it will affect Texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Have reported some on that and will write soon. Shouldn't affect much.

Mitch (NC)

Big fan of the blog. I know the year isn't over yet, but what areas do the Titans need to address in the draft? A corner seems likely, but do you see receiver as a position that warrants a pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

If they re-sign Finnegan, corner is a strength. They need safeties, someone who can consistently rush the passer, more depth at receiver and, hopefully, a center/guard.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Opinions are all over the map as to how Matt Leinart will perform. Obviously, the Texans have some faith in him, or they wouldn't have made him their backup. Realistically, what can we expect from him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I think you can expect him to be fine in the rest of the regular season. Maybe they lose one extra game because of him. He's not going to kill their ability to run and defend. I think he's matured and may surprise.

Rodney (Columbus OH)

Fantasy Question.Would you risk starting Vince Young over Tim Tebow this weekend? And would you start Helu & Ball over Benson and McGahee?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

If I had a fantasy team and my QB options were somehow Tim Tebow and Vince Young, I would fold immediately and apologize to the rest of my league for having "participated." Or is this a 25-team league?

drew (louisville)

will the Titans defense be able to stand up to the Falcons on Sunday, and will Dave Ball's absence have much of an effect?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

They didn't have Ball in Carolina and were fine.

Adam (Charleston)

There are some writers for the Houston newspapers that are seeing the glass as half full. Even you, most uncharacteristicly, appear to view this dilema under the same set of overly optimistic spectacles. I expect that from fans, not analysists. You don't win a superbowl or make the playoffs with a back-up quaterback.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Yeah, tell Jeff Hostetler that, Chief. I don't think they'll do well in the playoffs with Leinart. But they are in a bad division, and you don't have to have a star QB to win the division from where they are.

Andrew (Toledo, Ohio)

Whats better? A defensive minded or offensive minded head coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

How good is his coordinator on the other side of the ball?

sweetweaz (Mid Michigan)

speaking of the Titans pass rush.. what has happened to it? it used to be a strength and one could count on it... Jones has been spotty but there were health issues. I thought playing DE would free him up to use his speed. Morgan has not shown that ability like we thought he had.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I think the Jason Jones move from tackle to end was a mistake. And they just aren't as good a group of rushers. But it's an odd time to complain as the Titans just had five sacks in Carolina.

Mike (Rochester)

So Hasselbeck, Gabbert, Leinart and Painter. Wow never would have seen that coming last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Unpredictability is the best thing the league has going for it. By a lot.

Sean (Houston, TX)

Who should be the Texans RB of the future, Tate or Foster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

What's wrong with how things are?

Ryan (Houston)

Collin Mccarthy did an awesome job against the Panthers at ML and Ayers looks like a promising talent on the rise, should the Titans draft another outside LB in this next years draft and look to start Ayers, Mccarthy, and the Rookie?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

A third linebacker isn't a priority to me given concerns on the line, at safety and at corner if they lose Cortland Finnegan.

Johnny (Duval County)

What happened to Mercedes Lewis? Is it defenses focusing on him or poor play from Gabbert?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

C) It's Marcedes. Why do we have to blame someone else for him playing poorly?

Ryan (Houston)

You know you sure give the Texans alot of credit where it isn't due. 4 out of the last 6 passers they have faced are ranked 27,28,29 and 31. There defense is overrated and got exposed every time they played a decent team. Titans can win this division just as easily as they can, especially with CJ coming around.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I wasn't asked to draw up their schedule, just to analyze what they do against the schedule they are given. I am regularly blasted for being a Texans hater, so thanks for helping offset that. Who have the Titans beaten that is good? At least you point to four games to make your case against the Texans. One game is enough for CJ to be "coming around?"

Love Muscle (Nashvegas)

Fried or Baked turkey this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Whatever my brother's family is kind enough to serve up.

xrayvsn (murfreesboro, tn)

Hey Paul, What do you say like a team like the Jags who won't make a playoff push throws games against Indy to prevent them from possibility of Indy getting #1 pick and selecting Luck and then having to face Luck for next 10 yrs

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Who's going to tell Clint Session to not play to win? Or Paul Posluszny, Daryl Smith? It's just a silly line of thought that projects way too much.

Austin (San Antonio, tx)

Can you see Urban Meyer as the head coach of the Jaguars next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

No.

Matt L. (Texans starting lineup)

If I follow Shaubs style of handoff and bootleg, throwing the ball away if no one is wide open, will I be successful? Or do I need to find my own way to win in this league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

You need to win in the pattern of Schaub, which is called "the Texans' offense."

Jack Del Rio (One Stadium Place)

I'm tired Paul. So tired. What do they expect me to do with this talent? Maybe I should have taken that Southern Cal job. If Kiffin can win anyone can.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Except for the part where you were never offered the SC job.

Adam (Charleston)

That obscure reference to the ONLY example of a back-up qb wining the superbowl only furthers my point. Weak division, yes, but I can't see how anyone would not consider Tennessee as the favorites in the division right now.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you. Matt Hasselbeck is better than Leinart. But the Texans have better players at a lot of other spots on both sides of the ball. They are better.

Ryan (Houston)

Not so fast PK, we beat a Ravens team who was coming off a very impressive win against Pitt, and we just haulted a top 5 offense in this league to 3 points in a very convincing win. I know we had two very bad losses this year, but we have shown glimpses of being a great team. Throw Britt back into the mix I think our record is 7-3 right about now.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

The Ravens can beat Pittsburgh. They lost to Jacksonville and Seattle. That win isn't such a big thing for the Titans given that. I can't throw Britt back into the mix, because I don't play pretend. He's gone for the year.

Andrew (Toledo, Ohio)

Who do you think is the best rock n' roll group of all time? MNF guy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Do I have to say it's name? The E Street Band, of course.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Isn't "I feel the way I feel", just a step above "it is, what it is"? I expect better PK!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

It's, "I can't help the way I feel." I share opinions. Some of them run counter to popular thinking. Would you rather I fake agree?

Micah (London)

What's wrong with the Texans running game or defense? Nothing. One and done in the play-offs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

In Houston, they should call that progress...

Johnny (Duval County)

With Mathis torn ACL on the last year of his contract do the Jaguars look for a CB more than a WR in the draft or do they look into free agency for another CB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

They are allowed to find one of each in the draft. If there is a good one in free agency, they can chase there too. They need more than "a" wide receiver.

Sam (La Crosse, WI)

Thoughts on the Polians' future in Indy based upon Kravitz/Dunleavy differing opinions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I would be very surprised if the Polians are not in their same posts in 2012.

Kyle (MJD)

So how is it that Maurice Jones-Drew isn't Top 3 in Pro Bowl voting for AFC running backs? Hes been the model of consistency all season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

I beg you, all of you, to not care about Pro Bowl voting. It's a popularity contest. You're surprised a guy from a 3-6 team with a tiny following isn't top three in a popularity contest? Why?

James (Knoxville)

The Texans haven't officially ruled out Schaub for the season yet. If the Texans make the playoffs, any chance Schaub plays then?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

You usually need a second opinion when you really don't like the first.

Matt (Albion, IL)

Do you think Peyton Manning on the sideline hurts or helps the other Indy QB's? His skills are far superior to theirs and although he may help on reading coverage he may be encouraging them to do things beyond their skill set. Agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Disagree. He understands all the context. And if he wasn't there, he's get shredded for acting superior.

Rob (Kentucky)

I heard that back in June, AMC signed the Killing for a 2nd season. Have you heard when it starts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I have not, but I will be watching.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

You got Vandy this weekend?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I do.

Vince Young ((Philly))

PK, don't you miss me in the division especially with the boring QB's you have left to write about. I know CJ misses me and will send me a x-mas card as he'll be home for the holidays.....

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Actually he's got a game on Christmas Eve and another on New Year's Day. Glad you have such a handle on when the regular season ends, V.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

How long before McCarthy takes over for Ruud? Does he look like he could be a permanent solution to the MLB problem?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

It was one game. A good one. They'll put Ruud back out there this week or next. It's what they do. (LATE ADD: McCarthy didn't practice Thursday with a knee injury.)

Pat McAfee (A Canal)

I had the most amazing idea while floating here - I will come on the field whenever Curtis gets the ball and kick a field goal from wherever we happen to be. Mind blowing isn't it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Like it.

Fred Always a Jag (Rochester, NY)

With the way the planets have aligned, and how The Jags' defense has gelled, I can see them winning out and getting in- even without Mathis- The question then is, how deep in the playoffs will we actually go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

You are delusional to think that offense can be part of a team that wins seven in a row.

James (Knoxville)

Have you still been watching Whitney? Do you still like it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I like HER.

Lilly (Russellville Arkansas)

What is your personal Opinion of Blaine Gabbert

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I think he needs to show more in the remainder of the season so he can carry some confidence into the offseason. And so the Jags can be sure he's their guy.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, thank you for rightfully pointing out that I would be shredded if I wasn't on the sidelines supporting my team. Finally we have communicated well (I'm still left in the dark though).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Turn on the light!

Rex (New York)

How bad am I going to cry when the Tebows beat me tonight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

You will win by three TDs.

Steve (Jacksonville)

What is the Jags biggest problem right now? Also, how was Garrard able to succeed with the lackluster receiving core, but not Blaine?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I missed this big success.

Matty L (Houston/Cali)

Do you think it was wise for me to fly home after being handed the starting job to the top AFC team? Shouldn't I have stayed in Houston and showed how much I've matured by getting my guys together for some extra practice and learning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

The best thing for your guys is to get a couple days away. Don't ask guys to put in "extra" work just for show.

Connor Barwin (Houston, Tx)

How do you feel I'v been playing this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Very well.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Any chance Ruud's experience with playing the Falcons actually outweighs the fact that he's not better than McCarthy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

It doesn't help him tackle.

Jeremy (St. Paul)

Maybe I'm very, very wrong here, but there are a lot more examples of backup quarterbacks making the playoffs and/or winning the superbowl, right? Kurt Warner? Tom Brady? Or if you take over early in the season do we not consider you a backup anymore?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Nicely done.

Jeff Fisher (Home)

I saw you mentioned I couldn't be lured to Jacksonville in your last post. Why is my ability to put together losing streaks of 5 or more games such a great coaching asset?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

You're a steady coach who can put together a winning team. But you're not above ebb and flow, particularly when you are weak at QB.

KRay (Houston)

Given the number of Rookie QB's actually starting now, who do you think has the brightest future?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I was real impressed when I saw Andy Dalton a few weeks ago.

Johnny (Duval County)

Of all the rookie QBs playing, why does Gabbert look so awful? Is it the coaching staff? I don't want to hear the "lack talent around him" excuse since Dalton is in a similar situation.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

A similar situation? Dalton's receivers are absolutely superior to Gabbert's. He's got a first round pick with him, for crying out loud. Gabbert's not very good right now. But the people around him are most certainly making it harder to see what he can do.

John (Indianapolis)

assuming Manning is healthy next season, what do you think the colts should (will) do with the top pick ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Take Luck.

Xavier (Austin,TX)

Would you trade Mario Williams for a big time receiver and hope Brooks Reed can step up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Not viable. Williams is not under contract. You're either signing him, tagging him or letting him walk. And they're fine with what they have at receiver if they draft one.

paul (indy)

so NO thoughts on Caldwell keeping his job into the bye week and letting a rookie QB beat his ball club???

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Who did you want him replaced with, and how was that guy going to make Curtis Painter good?

Andrew (Toledo, Ohio)

What does Gabbert do well?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

He throws a very nice ball. That's a big deal for quarterbacks, the throwing part.

Marcedes Lewis (In your closet)

Keep saying all this BS about me playing bad, and my MMA training is going to take you to the next level my little weird looking friend. I?ve been the most dominate blocking TE in the league this year, and have been saving up all my big receiving plays for the second half of the season. Just for you!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Gimmie a break. How could you be this unproductive after getting that contract? And save me the blocking stuff. You didn't get paid to be half a player, you got paid to be a complete player.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

TV timeout. Jaguars fans go the sideline and regroup. This playoff talk and irrational correlations tell me you might be a bit dehydrated or possibly suffering from a concussion. I'll be monitoring you.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

If you can't spell Leinart, there is no chance I take your question.

Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville, FL)

You know what I'd give for A. J. Green or Julio Jones?! Beautiful hair only gets one so far PK.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Don't I know it , brother!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

No.

paul (indy)

"Who did you want him replaced with, and how was that guy going to make Curtis Painter good" ...thats NOT the point PK ..thanks for No real insight on your thoughts

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

It is the point. Firing Caldwell would have made you feel better. It wouldn't have solved anything. And don't fire a guy without replacing him. So who was your replacement? Larry Coyer? Clyde Christensen?

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Regarding the Jaguars and your blog post earlier, would Bruce Arians, Clarence Shelmon, Joe Philbin, or Curtis Modkins be in the mix for the head coach position?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I can't pretend to know. Talked to coaches and an exec I have relationships with, and they named the five I used as good head coaching prospects who can develop a QB.

Justin (San Diego)

Next year.....Peyton is back, Colts Draft Luck, Team stays relatively the same with the addition of a mediocre free agent or two and another relatively strong draft, what's going to get them above 10 wins similar to '10 with an aging and injury plagued roster and two quaterbacks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Ten wins can win them the division.

Whitney Cummings (L.A. or maybe Nashville)

Pete, I am needing a place to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner...any ideas?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Join us, I am sure my wife will be fine with it.

Jake (Boca)

Dexter or True Blood?...please say Dexter

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Neither. But Dexter.

Taylor (Lindon, UT)

Seeing the improvement that the Texans have made on defense this year by switching schemes, do you think the Colts should do the same?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

No. Their two best defensive players are 4-3 DEs, not 3-4 OLBs. They can't make plenty of changes to a 4-3 to get better, starting with revamping the secondary.

Kevin (Houston)

Do you ever elaborate on your answers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Often.

Sean (Auburn)

Paul, first time in one of your chats. I like your style. I don't like Pro Bowl popularity contests either, but can you jump back to MJD for a sec. The guy is a machine. If the Jags could get into the red zone more than once a game I think there'd be a lot more talk about MJD this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Welcome. Thanks. He is a machine. There are a lot of of really good players on bad teams in the NFL. But he's also allowed to help them get into the red zone more, right?

Chris (Nashville)

So what do you think about Matt Hasselback's acknowleging you as a brother . . . "a much older, much uglier brother"? Comments?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

It wasn't "brother," it was "version." Accurate assessment. And I must point out that an old and ugly Matt Hasselbeck still rates as a very handsome man.

Matt (Leinart)

Am I the second best starting quarterback in the AFC South, behind Matt Hasselback?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Yes.

Jim Tressell (Indy)

Why didn't you include me as a potential replacement for Caldwell?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

You've not been in meetings every day with offense or defense. You'd have been an outsider. Outsiders rarely take over NFL teams during the season. It's too difficult.

Seth (Nashville)

Do you think all the Titans are really missing in their secondary is a playmaking safety. The 3 corners are above average, and Griff isnt bad, but not consistant enough.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

How long does Grif get to be not consistent enough?

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or that sissy Mac stuff?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Explorer and Chrome.

Blake (Nashville)

are all 4-3's considered to be based off of the Cover 2 or are there other 4-3 defenses that the Colts could run that would be more aggresive?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

You can cover however you like behind a 4-3. Behind any front.

Brandon (Texas)

Paul how do you figure 10 wins will win the division next year? Houston has a solid core and with another good wr in the draft they will put up probably somewhere between 12-13 wins

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

If I said would, I apologize. I meant could. It's certainly good enough to compete for a playoff spot.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

This is the end of Regulation chat time. Use twitter or facebook for any further questions. If you're lucky, Paul Kuharsky will answer. Thanks for attending todays chat. See you next week.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Thanks Ed. You're the man. Cheers to all.
