Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:00 PM)

Hello everyone. My first ESPN.com live chat. Let's do it.

sam yoder (harrisonburg, Viginia)

do you think that harrison barnes will go to the nba next season

Myron Medcalf
  (2:01 PM)

Definitely. He was a Top 5 pick after last season. He's gone ... one of possibly five players on that UNC roster who will go pro after this season.

Collin (NC)

How far do you think my Tide can make it this year? And also what do you think of the UNCW team?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:04 PM)

I like Alabama's versatility with Green, Releford and Mitchell. That's a nice trio. Buzz has a long way to go at UNCW. Lost a lot from last season.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

Kentucky played well in the second half earlier this week against Kansas. However, I feel that they have some issues with a couple of their key guys like Terence Jones and Teague.....Can Calipari teach this group to be mature enough by the time March Madness rolls around?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:06 PM)

Maturity is always an issue with a young team. The same issue crushed John Wall's Kentucky team. But I believe Kentucky is the best team in America right now. Strong at every position. They'll mature. And when it's all said and done, I think they'll be the champs.

Coach Cal (Roy Williams Head)

Should I put Mike Kidd-Gilchrist on Barnes or on Marshall when Dec 3rd runs around?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:07 PM)

On Barnes. They need his size. But UNC will have similar matchup challenges. That's going to be a great game ... I hope.

Mark (Lyme, CT)

Hi Myron, what's the hold up with clearing Boatright? Uconn needs this guy now.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:10 PM)

Not sure need is the right word. He'll help. Backcourt depth is the biggest issue for the Huskies. But they're so strong in their starting five. NCAA/UConn still examining his status. If he returns without any issues, he'll certainly help. stay tuned.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

Congrats on the new gig! We miss you up here in Sota! What are your thoughts on some of the top teams like UNC, Kentucky, Ohio St etc...?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:13 PM)

I'm still in Sota. Man, it's getting cold. UNC-Wow. Henson ... Stretch Armstrong on a basketball court. How do you score against a team inside with they have a player like that? Only Kentucky can match their athleticism. Kentucky-Wow. Again. Anthony Davis is special. Young team. But so talented. Who can run with them? Ohio State-Thad Matta's best team since the Final Four run. My opinion. Aaron Craft one of America's best point guards. Buford underrated. They'll be in New Orleans.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

Myron, we miss you up here in Sota'! Have you had a moment to catch any of the Gophers games yet? Mbakwe looks good......almost NBA good......Thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:14 PM)

I saw Mbakwe against Fairfield. Two moments pointed to his evolution ... A lefthanded running layup in the first half, his free throws. He's thisclose to All-America consideration, assuming he continues to play this way. NBA is a possibility.

Lawrence (Toronto, Canada)

So I've heard that this draft class has depth? Would you say it may be the best in the last 5 years?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:17 PM)

Possibly. Sophomores Barnes, Sullinger, Perry/Terrence Jones, Lamb. Freshmen Drummond, Davis, Rivers ... Vets Henson, Zeller ..It's deep. And there's a solid balance of experience and youth. Wonder if the NBA will be back in session by then ... two rookie classes. Nice.

Jim (Memphis)

How many SEC teams do you see dancing in March?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:18 PM)

It's so early. Five right now. Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, Vanderbilt and TBA SEC squad. Maybe MSU. Again, it's early.

Justin (Arizona)

Who wins tonight Mississippi St vs Arizona?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:21 PM)

I'm going with Arizona. It takes young teams awhile to figure it out. Chemistry building. But Arizona held off another young, talented team in St. John's. Not sold on MSU yet, despite A&M victory. 68-60 Arizona.

Vinnie (ATL)

Is the Big 10 title Ohio State's to lose?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:22 PM)

100 percent yes. Big gap between the Buckeyes and the rest of the league.

Ralph (Hong Kong)

A lot of kids stayed in college this year due to the NBA lockout. As a result some of them may be bitter and less cooperative this season. Do you think we will see an increase in disciplinary suspensions this year? Is Reeves Nelson the first of many?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:23 PM)

I don't think the young guys are bitter at all. Guess what they'd be doing if they'd entered the draft? They'd be watching college basketball. The NBA lockout drama justifies their decisions. Why sit when you can play?

Daniel (Dodge City)

Baylor to win Big 12?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:24 PM)

I can't say that yet. Bears have the most talent in the league. But I've watched them play down to opponents too many times. Also, how will Quincy Miller and Perry Jones work together. Are there enough touches to go around? I still think Kansas will be in the mix, same with Mizzou and A&M when Middleton returns.

Jared (Minneapolis)

Who is the best freshman in the country?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

Anthony Davis. Against Kansas, he had a Wilt-like impact on the game. He's a defensive force. He's the key to Calipari's NCAA title hopes.

jeff (missouri)

what do you think of the non power six conferences

Myron Medcalf
  (2:29 PM)

West Coast Conference: Three bid league, IMO. I like St. Mary's. Gonzaga is strong. BYU will be in the mix too. Horizon: How about this league? Butler, Detroit, UW-Milwaukee, Cleveland State all fighting for the title. Will be fun to watch. Mtn West: Shocked by New Mexico's loss to NMSU. Not sure what it means for that team. But they'd better figure it out soon. MAAC-Iona, Fairfield are going to get better as March approaches. Still calling Iona a sleeper. So many leagues. Check out the weekly midmajor column for more.

Jeremy (Memphis)

What's your take on Memphis?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:31 PM)

Here's the knock against Memphis. Purely athletic. That's all they are. That's what folks say. I'm trying to figure out who will run with them and the small pool of teams that can match up with them 1-5. Can they hit shots consistently and be more than an up-and-down team? That's the question. But that's a lot of talent. A lot of talent.

Hayden (Spokane)

Will people please back off of Gonzaga's backcourt. There have been questions in the past, but with a more experienced David Stockton/Marquise Carter guard set and the incoming explosiveness of Kevin Pangos (a Canadian treasure) and Gary Bell Jr our backcourt is looking really solid. What are your thoughts on Gonzaga's chances to make a deep run in the tourney this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:33 PM)

Pangos. Wow. Talk about being in a zone. If Pangos continues to play that way, there won't be any more questions about the Zags' backcourt.

ryan (san diego)

what is your opinion on the east coast bias in college basketball?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:35 PM)

I don't buy it. 68 teams get a shot at the national title. You win your games, you get the same opportunity as everyone else. What does bias have to do with that?

Jack (Syraucse Ny)

With Syracuse ranked 5 to start off the ncaa season where do u see them being ranked in the nation at the end of the season? with cj fair and jardine, the offense is there ,and with melo we have height on defense and a very tough schedule. so what are their chances?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:36 PM)

How about that bench at Syracuse? National championship contenders. I expect the Orange to remain in the hunt. Ranking ... doesn't matter. They have the depth/talent to make a run in March.

Dave (PA)

Myron, as an Arizona fan, should I be more concerned with their knack for digging themselves holes and getting behind early to teams of a lesser caliber? or more pleased with the fact that they keep finding ways to win? thanks

Myron Medcalf
  (2:37 PM)

You're going to get frustrated at times watching a young team. I watched Harrison Barnes go 0 for 12 in Puerto Rico last year with 30 NBA scouts watching. People wrote him off. It takes time for youngsters. I'd pay attention to the fact that they're fighting for two halves. Some veteran teams aren't doing that right now.

Vinnie (A)

Will Tom Izzo's scheduling hurt this years team? Tom has never been afraid to schedule tough opponents, but NC and Duke back-to-back? Come-on man!

Myron Medcalf
  (2:40 PM)

Here's what I wonder about this year's Michigan State team. Will this schedule beat players down mentally before conference play? That's the only reason it would hurt them. It's so early. They're playing really good teams. Usually makes them tougher. But we'll see if it's good or bad for this team.

Shawn (Pittsburgh)

What are your thoughts on Pittsburgh this year? Tough loss the other night to LBS. Where do you see us at the end of the year? What kind of run can we go on in March, if any?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:42 PM)

So hard to project that far out. Gotta love Joe Lunardi. They need to figure out what happened the other night. Why couldn't they penetrate? Why'd they settle for poor shots? Why didn't they get back on defense? I think LBSU is talented. But they exposes some weaknesses in Pitt. With Ashton Gibbs, they'll figure it out. But they have to regroup and fast. Then we'll see about NCAA tourney projections. I called them a Final Four team before the season.

Brendan (Buffalo (NY))

Good mid-major game tonight between possible tourney teams: St. Bonaventure at Cleveland St. Who wins?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:43 PM)

I'm not betting against Cleveland State after their weekend win over Vandy.

Dave (Minneapolis)

What kind of effect do you think an NBA age limit of 20 have on college basketball? Specifically keeping kids eligible after their first year...

Myron Medcalf
  (2:44 PM)

I just think there's money to be made elsewhere. So some kids would go to Europe. I just don't like the idea of forcing a player to stay at the amateur level if an NBA team is willing to pay him. If they're 18 and an NBA team thinks they're ready, let them go pro. Let the rest of the kids come to college.

Daniel (Dodge City)

Your Final Four?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:45 PM)

Pitt, UNC, Kentucky, Ohio State .. preseason

trell (gainesville,ga)

who do u think will win maui?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:45 PM)

Kansas.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

Terrence Jones needs to learn the difference of playing with intensity and being out of control....Thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:47 PM)

My thing is ... What's with the constant staredowns? We all know you just scored. Why stare at the camera for 5 seconds? Just don't get it. Jones has to be smart on both ends of the floor. Those freshmen will follow his lead. I think it's challenging for guys who were go-to players a year earlier to learn how to defer. We saw that with Patterson and John Wall's team. He has to steady that team.

Zach (SD)

With the early loss to the NMS Aggies are the lobos still the favorite for the MWC ? SDSU is doign well for losing all that talent.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:50 PM)

SDSU is sneaky. Loved their tenacity against Baylor. New Mexico will get it together, stay in the hunt. But goodness .. that's not one they're supposed to lose. UNLV will be tough in conference play, too.

Lance (Canada)

If the tournament opened its brackets to 96; do you think it would benefit the sport? Because I assume something like this is a money grabber!?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:51 PM)

I don't like 68 personally. If you go 96, just put everybody in. I hope the tourney doesn't grow anymore, anytime soon. That's just me.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

With Pitt and Cuse coming to ACC, Do you think super conferences are good or bad for college basketball?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

Bad. I think teams will lighten their loads during the nonconference seasons. Why schedule a Kansas or a Kentucky if you're ACC school if you have to play Cuse and Pitt each year (potentially)? Not good. But it's coming.

Dusty (St. Louis)

Do you think possibly Duke in Maui and Ohio St. at home are much better matchups for Kansas than Kentucky was?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

Yep. What we're going to find out, I think, is that Kentucky is extremely talented. Not many, if any, teams on its level .. in terms of talent. I pick Kansas to win Maui.

Dusty (St. Louis)

Terrance Jones likes to act pretty tough, but trying to pull that act against Thomas Robinson? What was he thinking?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:54 PM)

I was concerned for his safety.

Charles (San Jose)

Would you prefer the current system or get rid of the conference tourneys and expand to 256 teams?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:55 PM)

It's not that simple. But in the smaller conferences .. there has to be a way to pit the regular season champ against the tourney champs. .. not fair when a team executes over the course of a season, loses in the conference tourney and misses the cut.

Daniel (Dodge City)

Who wins the Wooden Award this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:55 PM)

Jared Sullinger.

Robert (Tallahassee)

What does FSU have to do to make people recognize the ACC is not just a 2 team league?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

Beat Duke and/or UNC this season.

Matt (Toronto, ON)

Pangos is one piece of the Canadian treasure that we are unleashing on the NCAA... Been a long time coming, but hopefully the trend continues. We may have invented the game, but it's about time we started contributing!

Myron Medcalf
  (2:57 PM)

I covered the Gophers. I know all about Canada .. Devoe Joseph, Mo Walker. And sorry, but you can't have Pangos back. Too much fun to watch him play.

Greg (North Carolina)

We've seen Duke have two opponents down big in the second half. Both came storming back at the end. When will Duke learn the killer instinct?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

If Dawkins continues to shoot this way, Duke will stay in Final Four contention. Question ... Can Plumlees anchor the post against more talented inside players? That the bigger issue than killer instinct, IMO. They just need to execute for 40 minutes and Rivers has to settle down.

Dusty (St. Louis)

In a rematch of the NIT final last year, does Wichita St. have a chance against Alabama?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:00 PM)

There's always a chance. But Bama won't lose this one.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:03 PM)

Well thanks for your time. I've had fun. I'll see you all next time. Thanks again for joining me.
