Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to our Friday chat. I got some Pepsi, Wild Cherry flavor, and some candy so let's chat.

LeAnne (Washington)

Hi Cal. Boy Robinson sure had a great game huh? What do you think, a repeat performance sunday? Oh, also when is S Lee due back?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:04 PM)

Robinson has been solid all season. He's a trusted player for Tony Romo and he knows the offense. Sean Lee returned last week and was pretty productive. The swelling is really down in the wrist, he gave me a fist pump today after practice. Lee should be fine to play this week.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will pound the Miami Dolphins on Thanksgiving?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:05 PM)

Let's get through Washington first. Miami has played a lot better the last few weeks so I don't believe this is an easy game for the Cowboys.

Shawn (Ashe County, NC)

Calvin,I know this is a Dallas Chat and I'm a true Dallas Fan. However, I wanted your thoughts on Tim Tebow and the game last night.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:05 PM)

I believe in Tebow. He wins games. Just let it play out this year and try to get a QB next year to compete with him.

Boys' Fanatic (Dallas)

How do you think Red J is going to utilize felix and demarco? Does He trust felix to just throw him back into the pit? And what are your thoughts on using them at the same time?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

I can see Felix and DeMarco being used at the same time for maybe two or three snaps to make the defense guess. Carries: Felix five.Carries: DeMarco 18-20.Felix will return kicks.

Dom (Deluise)

Seriously, an illness that started on Wednesday will be keeping the FB out? What the heck is the illness - ebola??

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

It's pretty serious that it's kept him out of the game. For the first time all season, Jason Garrett ruled someone out on a Friday and that's what he did with Tony Fiammetta.

Invisible Man (Your Cookie Jar)

If Rob Ryan gets a head coaching offer (which is probably coming in the off season) do you think the Cowboys promote Eberflus to Defensive Coordinator so they have continuity with Ryan's scheme or do they go in a different direction and hire someone else.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:08 PM)

I can see that but Rob might try to hire Eberflus to run the defense with him. Rob has said Eberflus has been the right-hand man of the defense.

Boys' Fanatic (Dallas)

I know with the running game being as good as its been lately dont fix whats not broken and I know he's beem a bit knicked up lately but what are you thoughts on putting Montrae back at RG and Kyle back at LG where he and dougie fresh feel more comfortable?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:09 PM)

Keep things the same with Kosier and Montrae. No need to change because Kosier can help Tyron Smith with the protection calls.

dez ware (seattle)

how much do you expect bruce carter to play against the redskins? will he get defensive snaps in addition to teams work?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:10 PM)

Spoke to Bruce Carter today and he expects to get the same amount of snaps as last week. Carter knows the defensive playbook, but needs to translate it to the field.

gary (atlanta)

Why would Jerry even talk about or be frustrated with a kicker who Failed last year and know you have a guy has been moneyHe needs to frustrated by those two ILB's who can't cover

Calvin Watkins
  (3:13 PM)

Jerry wanted the kicker to work but injuries and ineffective play has forced Buehler to the sidelines. I doubt if Buehler will be here next year. He's a good guy and does a nice job when consistent, but that's the problem, he's inconsistent.

Todd (PA)

How big of a loss do you think Fiametta is? I feel not only is he a perfect fit for lead blocking for Murray he has has the best point of attack I've seen in a while. From what you saw what did you see in Chapas I remember him being kinda of soft but I do see him being more athletic n able to get to the next level better then Phillips. How much you think it will effect the whole offense and do you see them bringing up Chapas?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Shaun Chapas is on the practice squad and he could get the callup because Fiammetta will be inactive this week. The problem with Chapas, at least in training camp, was his inability to sustain blocks. He didn't hit people with a force and that causes problems in the backfield when a running backs is looking for room to run.

Daniel (Dodge City)

I was a Cowboys fan till Romo showed up. Do you think they can win a super bowl with him?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Nope.

Vix (Austin, TX)

Have the Boys given up on Ogletree?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:17 PM)

Looks that way. Robinson has moved past him on the depth chart and on kick returns Ogletree hasn't had much of an impact in that area. The Cowboys like his potential, but he's inconsistent. It might be time to move on.

Tony Romo (Dallas)

What do i need to do in order to lead this team to the super bowl?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:17 PM)

Coach.

mich (Mexico)

Hey Calvin, if the season were to end today, which position do you think the Cowboys would tackle in the 1st round of next year's draft? I think LB, Brooking and James are getting old...

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

Well at LB Sean Lee and Bruce Carter are the future starters. At first, I thought the Cowboys needed to get a QB or quite possibly a defensive end. I go back and forth. Right now, I'd say quarterback in the first round. But don't force the issue. If nobody is there for the Cowboys to take get a solid defensive player.

Ryan (Dallas, TX)

Whats the status of mike jenkins and miles austin? are they both gonna sit until the Giants?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

Jenkins told me today he expects to return for the Dolphins game on Thanksgiving Day. He's started some running. Now Austin could return for the Giants game Dec. 4.

Daniel (Dodge City)

Is the the year that the Cowboys draft a quarterback in maybe the middle rounds?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

It's hard to say, I would get one if a quality quarterback is around. If not, move on and get a pass rushing defensive end or outside linebacker to help Ware.

Joshua Casey (Los Angeles, California )

I know it's early on in the season but is there any indication that Rob Ryan would leave the Cowboys if offered a head coaching job, because I really like him as the defensive coordinator.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:26 PM)

Rob Ryan has signed a multi-year contract he's not going anywhere if he doesn't get an opportunity. However, if Ryan gets an offer, he's gone, no doubt about that. The question is who takes over for Ryan?

Mich (Mexico)

If you were in Jerry's position and being the case that you do not like Romo, would you go crazy and trade for Peyton Manning?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

I don't want to trade for a quarterback coming off a neck injury in his mid-30s. Keep Romo and find a young talented quarterback in the draft.

Todd (St Lucas St)

I get very sad and grumpy when the Cowboys lose.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

Sorry about that.

Juan (Arlington, TX)

with the starting FB out, do you think John Phillips can get the job done so Murray gets his yardage like in past games?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:28 PM)

Phillips will play some FB this week but I can see Shaun Chapas moving up from the practice squad.

Ben (los angeles)

CW-do you buy into the idea that the Cowboys play down to the opposite teams record? I guess the real question is where is the consistency from week to week? Coaches/players/system?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:31 PM)

I don't think the Cowboys play down to the competition, that's saying the team is elite. They're not.Saying that the Cowboys have beaten teams they're supposed to be recently, Seattle and upset, if you will, Buffalo. Dallas should knock off Washington this Sunday and win the next two vs. Miami and at Arizona. The Miami game worries for whatever reason. Cowboys blew three games, San Francisco, Detroit and New York Jets.

Matt (Cincy OH)

Last I checked, Romo was statistically one of the top 10 QB's in the NFL playing part of the year with broken ribs. Why the dissing of Tony? Also, if you are going to ditch him, how confident are you that you can get someone better? Even the darlings of the past few drafts (Flacco, Ryan) I wouldnt take over Romo.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:32 PM)

I would say Ryan has more of an upside than Romo. I would take Romo over Flacco.Saying that, Romo is a good quarterback, but he costs the Cowboys too many games and I agree with Deion, he can't lead the team to a Super Bowl.

Mich (Mexico)

Bruce Carter is in a better position to get the start (in the future) than my man Alex Albright?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:33 PM)

The Cowboys had Carter, a second-round pick, with a first-round grade. Carter is a future starter in this league.

Marc (Irving)

Hi Cal, Do you think the Cowboys will draft a guard in next years draft? I like the stud from Stanford

Calvin Watkins
  (3:34 PM)

Too early to talk about the guards right now. But David Arkin and Bill Nagy will get every chance to win starting jobs next year and Kyle Kosier has some years left on his deal.

Boys' F (Dallas)

Phillip Tanner seems to get those tough yards who would you put in 3rd and 1? Murray or Tanner?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

Murray. I like Tanner. He's a good story and he could be a quality backup for the Cowboys in the future. But for right now, Murray is on a hot streak and he needs to keep getting the ball.

Marc (Irving)

Will they sign Robinson to a multi-year deal?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

I doubt it. But they do like Robinson. In some ways it reminds me of Patrick Crayton, when he got his multi-million dollar deal. Dallas won't do the same with Robinson.

Ryan (Dallas, TX)

Do the Redskins have any chance on sunday?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

Yes. The Cowboys have some quirky games in FedEx Field. It wouldn't surprise me if it happened again.

Mich (Mexico)

Are you doing a reverse-jinx on Romo?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:38 PM)

LOL

Mike (Connecticut)

Deon is an idiot and so are you if you agree with him about Romo. Tony is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL--top five for sure.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

Mike calm down.Top 5 QB1. Brady2. Rodgers3. P. Manning4. Brees5. Roethlisberger6. Cutler7. Romo8. Rivers9. Schaub10. E. ManningNow you can take Peyton out if you want but I like Big Ben over Romo and Cutler and Romo could switch spots if you want.

Daniel (Dodge City)

Cowboys get CB in first round?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:41 PM)

Interesting, but I like QB and pass rusher.

Joshua Casey (Los Angeles, California)

Is there any chance that Rob Ryan could take the same route that Garret did, that being staying around for a few years and being promised that if things don't work out he'll be the next head coach?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

Good question but Jerry Jones loves Jason Garrett and he's not going anywhere. Now I can see Jerry paying Rob Ryan big money to stay as DC. But Rob really wants to become a head coach.

Marc (Irving)

Chance that Norb Turner gets fired from the Chargers and then Jason Garrett brings him in to call plays. Next year

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

I doubt if Norv will come here and become the offensive coordinator.

Reality (Check)

No way is Cutler better than Romo. If you think Romo's careless, check out some Bears games. BTW, Cutler spent the second half of a playoff game on the bench. Romo would have to be dead for that to happen.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:44 PM)

I like Romo, a good quarterback, I just think Cutler has a better skill set than Romo. Cutler has also been sacked more times than Romo in his career. That can make any quarterback shellshocked.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:45 PM)

Thanks for the time guys, sorry I couldn't get to them all.Take care.
