Hey guys, happy early Thanksgiving to you all. Coming off a crazy weekend of fights. Chandler/Alvarez was top notch. Rua/Henderson was probably the best fight I've ever seen, on video or in person. It was that good. What do you guys think?
Can we finally stop calling Eddie Alvarez a top ten lightweight? And while were at it, get rid of Aoki to. These guys fight nobody!
I wouldn't call Michael Chandler a nobody. He's young and doesn't have a ton of experience, but he's a Grade A collegiate wrestler with great cardio and fast improving hands. That said, I think the people crowning Alvarez the No. 1 lightweight in the world jumped the gun a bit...HOWEVER...I do still have Alvarez and Aoki in my top 10.
hey bret all these people are saying shogun deserved a draw but he was knocked down twice--round 1 and round 3 so where are the 10-8 scores for those rounds--goes both ways
I see your point but first round was definitely not even close to 10-8. Rua actually knocked Henderson down in the round too, many are forgetting. That round was actually very close in my eyes. Third round you could make a case for 10-8 Henderson, but Rua recovered, got back to his feet and made a bit of a comeback late in the round as it was clear Henderson was exhausted. I scored fifth 10-8 Rua, and that was the only 10-8 I had.
Happy Thanksgiving to you.
I had a dream last night I ate lots of turkey and laid the points with the Ravens over San Fran and won some money. Let's hope that was prophetic.
Brett, just want to make sure i read this right.... Ufc 140 and 141 will be live on ESPN?
Hmmm, I think you read it right but misinterpreted. We do live analysis for every UFC card. We live blog, which is cool because it's live and not round by round, and a chat like this. It's a fun thing to do, even if you bought the fights.
Give us your best guess of the card lineup for the next UFC on Fox event, also heard its targeted for 1/28
It is a go for Chicago on Jan. 28. As far as who is on the card, my first guess was Rampage Jackson. I heard from a source it wasn't going to be him, but now I just read this morning he's not going to be on the Japan card, so maybe that shakes it up. I also thought rebooking Phil Davis and Rashad Evans wouldn't be a bad look.
Brett,Premature to call Hendo-Shogun one of the best fights ever? Or has there been enough time since the fight to rationally discuss this?
I think there's been rational time. I've watched hundreds of fights live and this was the best one I've ever seen, just based on how they kept going. When you watch fights repeatedly, you start to recognize when a fighter has nothing left. They both were at that point multiple times, but found third-fourth-fifth winds. It was amazing.
Does Munoz do anything that Chael doesn't do better?
His ground and pound is more violent than Chael's Chael will control you and grind on you, Munoz will Donkey Kong you into unconsciousness. But that's the only thing I can peg.
Brett: We know that most likely Sonnen/Munoz is happening at UFC on Fox2. Is the hold up with announcing have to deal with Rampage? It seems like he wants to fight in Japan but Dana wants him on Fox?
Yes, could be. Originally, I of course thought Sonnen would not make Fox because he was going to fight Anderson and that's a big money fight the UFC would want for PPV. Now, with Silva injured, the Munoz fight makes sense and yeah, I think Rampage is a natural fit on network TV.
Anderson will do better if him and chael fight again soon, last time he had bruised ribs and still won
Everyone seems to have differing opinions on that. My take is this...don't put too much stock into Chael's high testosterone levels (as many do) or Silva's injury.
Thoughts on Hendo's next fight? I hope it's an immediate title shot at either lhw or mw, no contender bout necessary he has nothing to prove with the 2-5 contenders at either weight
I'd like to see him sit a bit, recover from that last fight, then fight for the title at 205. He's not the same guy at 185. That cut is hard on him at this point in his career.
I found 139 to be one of the most anticipated cards of the year and it did not disappoint.
It wasn't one of the most anticipated cards of the year in terms of hype or excitement leading in, but it was a phenomenal card. Glad I was there. Silva/Le was also a great fight to watch.
When you heading out to Stockton, CA to spend time with Nick D? I know you ain't scared homie, but seriously, this is most excited I have ever been for a UFC fight. Am I nuts, or does Diaz have a great chance of pulling off the upset?
Believe it or not, I would actually really like to go to Stockton. Diaz is high on my list of fighters' camps to visit. I think he's got a shot against St. Pierre, for sure. Better shot than most of the contenders we've seen him fight recently.
Are we going to see Cruz and Faber on the next TUF? The added weight classes seem way too thin, do you expect this to change in the near future?
Yes, the smaller weight classes will get more depth. All of them will. I don't necessarily see the lighter ones THAT much more thin than any of the others. I really hope we see Cruz/Faber coach TUF next. Timing makes sense. Dana said he has a plan for them.
Early thoughts of Miller/Guillard?
That's a good fight. Did everyone see Guillard's reaction to the Lauzon loss on Dana's video blog? He was clearly very upset with himself. Tough, tough fight with Miller. Either Guillard finishes him early or Miller wins it.
Mr. B., I saw Urijah's improved standup and have always liked his overall game, just thought we might see Bowles wobble him. Kudos to Urijah for a great fight, I believe Bowles will be back too.
Bowles will be back. He's a great fighter with serious finishing skills, but he's always going to struggle against the faster guys at 135. Just doesn't have the speed to keep up. Urijah is at the top of his game. I'm looking forward to the trilogy.
47-46 Hendo, no way you can score the 5th 10-8 for Shogun and NOT give Dan 10-8 in the 3rd. Gassed out noogies don't count for more than true power shots that should have stopped the fight.
I see the point you're making, but spending an entire round in full mount landing punches is a 10-8, whether they are hard punches or 'gassed out noogies.' Rua landed like 15 unanswered punches multiple times. You could never stop the fight because of them, but that was a 10-8.
With his loss to Chandler, and no longer being locked in by the Champion's clause, is there any talk of Eddie Alvarez making the jump to UFC? if he stayes does he need to win the tourny or does he get an immediate rematch?
To be honest with you, I'm not 100 percent sure of Alvarez's contract details off the top of my head. I would think Bellator is looking to set up a rematch of that fight as soon as possible.
Am I the only one that feels like Testosterone Replacement Therapy is hanging like an evil shadow over MMA? Chael and Hendo both do it and they are being paraded out as representatives of the sport to a new and wider audience. I fear an MLB style backlash before the sport can really take hold. Thoughts?
This does seem to be a concern with a large group of MMA fans. Lots of comments I saw from the weekend talking about Henderson's TRT. If the right measures are taken to make sure these guys actually need it, I personally don't have a problem with it. I've also been told by enough people that it really doesn't help you THAT much. Still, it's something that has to be monitored.
How goes it Brett - Did Eddie look/fight like the champ in the last 30 secconds against Chandler?
Everyone is hating on Alvarez this week but look, he fought a tough guy and he really grabbed momentum in that fight during the second and third rounds. He fought well, Chandler just carries some power in his hands, landed a big overhand right and submitted him as he was dazed. It happens.
Any truth behind the Fefor to the UFC, AGAIN rumors. I for one don't want to see him. I think he's done and doesn't interest me one bit. Rumor is Fedor v Cain. I guess it could be good to lay Fedor to rest once and forall.
I would be shocked if Fedor came to the UFC.
I understand the concern, but I wish Dana White would shut his yapper about saying someone should retire!!! There have to be many, many people closer to the fighter that (I hope) would advise them to retire if needed. Wanderlei looked good on Saturday night, let the guy enjoy his win without getting any $hit from Dana - someone who probably does not have day to day interaction & expertise with fighters to make that call. So someone got KO'd, its called fighting, for goodness sake, they know the risks...
Unfortunately, SOMETIMES the people around a fighter who know he should quit tell him not to because he makes them money. It's happened in boxing and I'm sure it will happen in MMA. It's better to have a promoter asking a guy to quit because he doesn't want him hurt, than forcing him to fight on even though he's putting his health at risk.
Does Hendo jump Rashad for next title shot? He should NOT.
No, he shouldn't. And I don't think he will.
I would not have had a problem had Rosenthal stopped the fight in the third. Your thoughts.
Watching live, me neither. Rua had turtled up and did nothing but cover up for what seemed like a solid five seconds. But Rosenthal must have seemed something...Rua kept going.
Can we please get stephan bonner a real fight?
I didn't expect him to flat out dominate Kingsbury like that. They'll give him a step up the ladder for that.
Who do you think is a good opponent for Rory when he comes back? I'd like to see him face someone of a bit better quality than Ebersole
Ebersole is gritty man, don't underestimate that guy. There are plenty of good matchups for Rory as he's so young. It's crazy to think he already fought Condit. It's not like you can say, well he's not ready for this guy or that guy, because he's already fought arguably the No. 2/No. 3 guy in division. I'd like to see if he could bring some fight out of Jon Fitch, personally.
Thoughts on Fedors preformance? I still think he would get destroyed by a lot of the top Heavy's in the UFC.
I thought Jeff Monson was in defensive mode throughout the fight. Thought Fedor could have finished him multiple times. Maybe that was him being more conservative. To me, it looked more like him not caring.
Just seems like a big chance on Dana's part to risk Cheal losing. Sonnen-Silva 2 will be huge.
Very true. Munoz-Silva does about 500k less buys on PPV than Sonnen-Silva.
would love to see phil davis v rashad on the fox 2 card; would also love Griffin v Rampage 2 on fox 2 :) thoughts?
Those two fights were the two I originally guessed a couple weeks ago. We'll see. Should know sometime this week I would think.
When will Serra ever step into the cage again?
I have no idea. I haven't heard anything about him lately except that he was huge at the last UFC he attended.
Is Todd Grisham the new regular host for MMA Live?
I'm not sure, but I have been told they are hammering out a future plan with MMA Live.
Brett, Do you think Hendo has a chance to beat Jones if they fight? Did the fight with Shogun sway you one way or the other?
The fight with Shogun didn't sway me either way. Henderson's only chance to me is that right hand. It's so heavy, he only needs to land it once to get you in trouble and he does a good job of landing it. He'll look so small compared to Jones in the cage though and he won't be able to take him down easily if he gets in trouble. Very tough fight for him.
Machida got whoooooped by Hua, why do people think he has a shot against Bones?
He's unorthodox. Offers something Jones hasn't seen yet. But you're right, the more I envision that fight the more I see Jones running away with it easily.
Firslty, good pick with JDS. Second, which fight of 2012 (what's left of it) you are most looking forward to and why?
Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone because I like both their attitudes, they're both confident, they're both ultra offensive. That is going to be an awesome fight.
How do you feel about Rampage-Bonnar for UFC on Fox?
Sure, I'd take that.
How did you score the Kampmann vs Story fight?
29-28 Kampmann. Gave Story first round, if I'm remembering correctly. Kampmann found his rhythm in 2 and 3.
Hendo vs. SHogun was an awesome fight however I am not a fan of the 5 round non title fights. Guys will gas out more often than not and it will lead to more questions than answers. if Hendo v. Rua was 3 rounder there would be no argument and Hendo would be able to fight sooner than later.
You're one of the few who felt that way. Most people said it was great to have a 5-rounder in that situation. I liked the fact it was 5 rounds, but it does open the door for more injuries. I think they should get paid accordingly for it, as well.
Whats next for Darth Bader?
Forrest Griffin would be a good matchup.
Did I miss something? Is Anderson Silva hurt? I thought the Chael fight was already locked in..
Silva is recovering from an injured shoulder. Originally, it looked like he'd be good to go early 2012. Now, they're saying that timetable has changed to around June.
Fedor doesn't have the size or strength to compete with the UFC heavyweights. 5 years ago? Fine, but today the division is way too big and strong at the top.
I wouldn't attribute it to size or strength. Look at Cain Velasquez and JDS, both are undersized for the division. Fedor was never the perfect fighter, but he seized opportunities and was an amazing finisher. These days, guys make less mistakes and are more dangerous technically.
It doesn't seem like Sonnen-Munoz is Fox worthy. Sonnen for sure. Couldn't they have pulled Belfort?
I like the Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson fight, but I agree. Belfort/Sonnen would be terrific. Maybe, from a promotional standpoint, they didn't want to sacrifice one for the other.
have you heard anything about Tyron Woodley or strikeforce welterweight title?? i thought he was a good young prospect
Haven't heard anything yet. Details on Strikeforce are supposed to be coming, from what Dana and Lorenzo have told me...maybe next week?
When Edgar loses to Bendo @ 144 will he finally move down to featherweight?
No, why would he? There are soooo many lightweights for him to fight. If he keeps beating them, he has no reason to go down.
Hello Brett. First time I've seen Cung Le and must admit I was impressed - not sure whether he's a true middleweight though (judging by his muffin-tops!)
Le was a better fighter than I thought. I felt going in, as long as Silva's chin held up, he'd dominate. Le was a tough out. He absorbed shots better than I thought he did and he did a good job of setting up his range against an aggressive, experienced guy. He's not a title contender, never will be. But I'd love to see him fight another striker again.
are you taking over cost spot and doing this thing weekly now?
Yes, Chost was good enough to ask me to take over. I accepted.
Hendo dominates for 18 minutes, then Rua has a dominant position, throwing pillow punches, for the last 7 ... and you score it a draw? Is that the stand you're making?
Hmmm. When you describe it like that ... Remember we're on a 10-point must though. Go back and watch the fight. R2 and R3 were 100 percent Hendo. R4 and R5 were 100 percent Rua. R1 was closer than a lot of people are suggesting.
It is sort of wierd that there is no real event this weekend.
If you've got MTV2, you've got Bellator. Solid card, I'll be watching.
As a follow up, the reason i though Edgar would move down is because the featherweight division seems pretty weak at the moment. He would be an instant contender for Aldo's belt even if its just for one fight
Yes, but why leave to be a contender when you're already the champ?
Do you think winning a title is a requisite for making the UFC hall of fame? Could guys like Florian and Bonnar get in for what they've done for the sport itself despite the losses on their record?
The UFC Hall of Fame is kind of strange. Most HOF have a certain number of inductees every year. If they ever start doing that, obviously they run out of once-dominant title holders. I would expect guys like Bonnar and Florian to get in some day, no doubt.
It must suck to be the fighters on next weekends card. They cant pig out this thanksgiving otherwise they wont make weight
Luckily, the rest of us can. That's it for the chat this week guys, thanks for participating. We'll go longer on the next one. Enjoy eating. Peace!
