Not all is as bad as it seems. Not much unlike a horse needs a race over the track, Caleb needed to see some live action. Now that he's accustomed I think we'll see a much better game next week.

ed nealey mesa arizona [via mobile]

will the bears draft a quartback this year? rob griff from baylor looks good!9

Jurko
  (1:05 PM)

I think they should draft a QB this year, but I wouldn't draft him until the third round. Some have a tendence to fall. Romo undrafted. Warner undrafted. Cutler is your QB for next 6-7 years. Might want to develop some young talent in case of injury.

Mike (Minneapolis)

Martz needs to dump this back side screen stuff. Cutler missed on it twice in the Atlanta game- over shot Davis, who was wide open, and the second one was tipped and returned for a TD. Terrible red zone call....

Jurko
  (1:06 PM)

It's a terrible call at the six-yard line because the linebacker doesn't have anywhere to go. NO depth at that point. Already set at the goal line, he's not going deeper. So he can break up on that ball, he's not fooled. That's what it's horrible at the goal line. Usually he drops 10-12 yards. No where to go. That's why screens are stupid near goal line.

Paul (Chicagoland)

Are you changing your prediction of the Bears still making the playoffs after seeing what Hanie is all about?

Jurko
  (1:07 PM)

No. Bears will still make playoffs. Still win 3. Schedule is not that tough. I challenge Bears defense to do what Denver's D is doing with their QB. If Bears have a top-flight defense like they say they do, why not do what Denver doing. Holding teams to 15 and under.

Joe B (Oxford, CT)

How concerned should Bears fans be about this week's game in light of Hanie's mistakes, the KC defensive effort last night, and facing Orton instead of Palko?

Jurko
  (1:09 PM)

Orton's not a world-beater. He started some games and can throw, but can throw to other team. Their TE gone, their RB is gone. Let some linemen go. Center is real old. They've got their own issues. My point is you're going to have to win some close games going forward. Hanie needed to have a game with live fire so he can get accustomed to it. Can't do it in practice. Need game speed running around. Need to make decisions at faster pace.

Mike (Great White North)

I have questioned many play calls Martz has made this season, but the one before the half takes the cake. Roll Hanie out, or better yet, run the ball and worse case scenario, a field goal puts us up at half. What can be said of the Mad Martz today??

Jurko
  (1:10 PM)

That play specifically was a stupid play call. The good QB pretends he doesn't hear it and calls something else. The young QB shoul dhave thrown it into the dirt and lived to fight another day. But also trying to make an impression cuz he knows Bears don't like him.

Kyle S (Oak Park)

The Bears OL had a solid game in my opinion as 2 of the sacks were on Hanie. Are we seeing Webb and Louis become solid starting OTs before our eyes?

Jurko
  (1:11 PM)

I think we're seeing Louis for sure. Webb needs more consistency. Needs to talk less and play more. Needs to tweet less and play more.

Mike (Minneapolis)

Are the Bears squeezing Forte a bit over the past several games? By this I mean are they limiting his touches for some reason other than performance related??

Jurko
  (1:12 PM)

I'm glad somebody else has noticed that. I thougth early on they were just trying to conserve him, but it's something to look at as they move forward. I think the rest of the league has caught up with him a bit too.

Oliver (Downtown)

How much of the blame for the game goes on to Mike Martz and do you expect a different game plan heading into the game against KC? It appeared the Bears went away from the run game and called plays that Hanie could not execute.

Jurko
  (1:13 PM)

Hanie is 75 percent to blame. Martz is 25. Guy can call the plays and up to QB to make decisions.

Reece Helms (South Carolina)

the bears shold sign JaMarcus Russell! Agree? or do you REALLY AGREE?!?

Jurko
  (1:14 PM)

Absolutely not. He didn't take his time in this league seriously. Reclamation process for him does not go through Chicago.

Tim (Cayman Islands (born: Forest Park, il))

With Barber running the ball so well, do you think the bears should commit to running a 2 back system?

Jurko
  (1:15 PM)

Barber looked special at times. That's why to me, if you have blocking in front, the RB position to me is interchangeable parts. Barber started to prove that. I don't fall in love with RBs because they're a dime a dozen.

Nick (lake in the Hills)

So you think Sunday justified just how badly the Bears need a true #1 receiver? I feel like Cutler's arm strength makes up for our lack of a play making WR and with a backup QB, Hanie has no reliable receiving threat to count on to bail him out on some bad throws.

Jurko
  (1:17 PM)

I certainly think they need an upgrade. I've said that for a long time, and it will take some of the pressure off Forte. When you have a NO. 1, teams have to gameplan and you can almost dictate coverage. With that, you can utilize youre other three receivers and RB to take advantage of mismatches. But that can only be done with a true No. 1.

Jeremy (Pennsylvania)

Speaking of Webb, Do you see Hali vs Webb as the key matchup for this week? Max starks had a tough game on him. The bears def should handle KC pretty easy like Pittsburgh, but KCs def isn't horrific as one may think. Hali needs chipped & DT.

Jurko
  (1:18 PM)

That will be a big one. Webb played well against the Raiders. He plays better against taller guys, and Hali is taller.

derrick hauenstein (jarrell, tx)

will we see Josh McCown anytime this year if Caleb has another poor performance?

Jurko
  (1:18 PM)

I don't think he'll replicate the performance he just had. But Hanie will take you to playoffs or not. And if the defense is giving up 25 points I don't think you'll win many games anyway.

Patrick (Louisville)

Where was the challenge on the out of bounds play that put Hannie in a bad situation on 3rd and 16 instead of 3rd and managable? It was an obvious call. . .who's responsible for relaying that information to Lovie and was he on a bathroom break?

Jurko
  (1:19 PM)

He wasn't even close to being out of bounds. It wasn't like he was by the line. He was about a yard in.

Nick Flo (Southside )

Tim Tebow mania sweeping the nation, will the Bears be first team to end this fairy tale run?

Jurko
  (1:20 PM)

Oh yes. Maybe that will provide the perfecet motivation for this defense.

John (Tucson)

Jurko, I know Hanie played poorly the first half of the game, but what shocked me even more was the reaction of fans wanting to drive him out of Chicago after only 10 minutes of play. Can we have a little patience and realistic expectations here? And do you think the QB play gets ironed out?

Jurko
  (1:22 PM)

Excellent perspective. I had a 10 on Oakland in my confidence picks because you have to anticipate a QB who has not played all season to struggle some. The Bears are responsible for getting their backups some time during the season. And there were two occassions when the Bears had big leads and should have gotten them in the game. Even just to hand off.

Taylor (chicago)

What do you see the bears game plan being vs KC this weekend? Off the bus running or....

Jurko
  (1:23 PM)

I like to get off the bus running. But I'm also a fan of taking shots deep and getting safeties tentative.

Jurko

Brian Urlacher (DaBears)

Jurko, I Blamed the loss on the defense.. can u tell the fans that i did it because im classy and i dont like to blame my teammates and the defense played a hek of a game

Jurko
  (1:24 PM)

No, I'll let you take responsibility. Big screen pass in the second, Bush rolled by you on the TD, and Jennings fell asleep on the double move. TJ had an A-plus going in that game. That one play drove him to a C.

Ken (Tinley Park)

If Hanie wins out, does he have a starting QB job somewhere else next year? I know it was a bad game, but he showed some good talent too.

Jurko
  (1:25 PM)

That's what he's doing, auditioning for the league. That's why he has to play closer to the vest and not worry about next year and the year after.

Hasan (Chicago)

Is Favre too afraid of the Packers to play for the Bears?

Jurko
  (1:25 PM)

He's too old and too frail and too broken down. Let the man be. He's bass fishing.

Mike (Lindenhurst)

Jurko,Explain the intentional grounding call. It may be the rule but it seems to be a bad interpretation of the intent of the rule to me. Also, why was there no flag when Hanie was driven to the ground in the end zone. I thought the refs were horrible, though not really costing the Bears the game.

Jurko
  (1:27 PM)

The spike has to be done immediately. You get the snap and spike it in the ground. Because he looked for the pass, and hesitated, the ball never passed the line of scrimmage and it wasn't intended for a receiver, hence the call. And since the penalty was to save time, that's why you had the 10-second runoff.

Jurko
  (1:27 PM)

Btw, there was time left for just one play. And that play should have been all get back in huddle, say "jump ball right," and that's the play, not let me look at a guy to see if he's ready. The OL didn't know that.

derrick hauenstein (jarrell, tx)

the defense is getting up there in age at some key positions, are the back-ups and young players ready to take over in the next couple of years or are we going to be dead last in defense for a few years til we get some top caliber defense players?

Jurko
  (1:28 PM)

When Urlacher, Peppers and Briggs go, we're in trouble.

Mike (Chicago)

I know people said Jennings had a great game, but his "dropped INT's" also resulted in points, then the play that pretty much sealed the game. Why don't DB's take flack for droping INT's that still lead to points a few plays later? I know that's why DB's aren't WR's, but still. Jennings factored in to 13 of the Raiders points.

Jurko
  (1:29 PM)

DBs are failed receivers. When you can't catch the ball, they turn you into a DB. Offensive linemen are unathletic defensive linemen. That's the way it works. They don't catch as much flak because they're DBs.

Ken (Tinley Park)

Can Knox only run a strait line? It seems if he tries to make a cut or turn in, he's on the ground or dropping the ball....very aggravating.

Jurko
  (1:30 PM)

He can run a deep in too. Should have had a ball early, but otherwise I thought he played well. Doesn't need to run every route, just the fly and deep-in.

Jurko
  (1:30 PM)

It will be better next week guys. I promise. See you next week.
