OK, it's Bedlam week. Let's get this thing rolling.
What early entries to the NFL do you anticipate for the Sooners (besides the Hammer)?
I think the Hammer (who by the way is a near lock to leave) is the only Sooner that ends up leaving early. Landry Jones is the only other real possibility, and I think he ends up staying. His stock is not as high as it could be, and I know he doesn't want to be in a long distance relationship during his first year of marriage to OU women's basketball player Whitney Hand. The two are set to get married next summer.
Is Blake Bell another Tim Tebow?
If OU beats OSU will we be co-champs, the way it was in the Big 8, or will it be a true one champion conference determined by head to head matches?
OU would be the one true champion.
Jake, if the Sooners lose to OSU on Saturday, but the Cowboys jump Bama in the BCS, could we still go to the Fiesta Bowl?
No, I believe the Fiesta would take K-State in that scenario. Not sure the Sooners would even be eligible for a BCS game with another loss.
What happened with Jazz and is it a long term problem?
Combination of attitude and off the field issues. This is the third time he's been suspended in two seasons. I would call that a long-term problem.
What is wrong with the OU defense. The secondary is getting carved up.
Inexperience at safety, lack of overall depth are two of the major problems.
If OU wins bedlam, they will play who? If they lose, who will they play?
Win: Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl; Lose: either Cotton or Alamo. Cotton would probably be against Arkansas. Alamo, likely Washington.
Does Trey Metoyer join the team in January?
From everything I hear, he should be enrolled for the second semester.
Jake can you make some sense on the joe paterno case?
Paterno deserved to be fired. Child abuse is despicable -- anyone that would look the other way should be punished.
Given how we've played late in the season, do you think Sooner fans should have concerns about next season?
Yeah, a lot of concerns. OU is not playing its best football right now. But this isn't the first time OU has entered Bedlam ailing. And the Sooners seemingly have found a way to win this game. We'll see if this club can do it, too.
Jake, I think Venables, Heupel and Norvell need to go. With all the talent we had this year we should dominated on both sides of the ball. Even with injuries we had the depth to overcome if the coordinators were worth their salt.
What if OU wins Bedlam? Hard to fire coaches after they win a Big 12 title and go to a BCS bowl game, even after losing their best player to a season-ending knee injury. Has this been the coaching staff's best season? Certainly not. But it's way over the top to say both coordinators need to be canned.
With OSU's struggles against the big, running QBs, do you think they we will see Bell more, not just red-zone?
Yes. I expect Bell to get 12-15 carries. OU is going to test OSU's interior run defense.
Hey Jake,I love the bell-dozer formation and it seems pretty unstoppable but do you think they run it too often? I have been telling my wife every game i think it is ridiculous that every time on the goal line they don't even give landry a chance...At least let him try on first down...also will this impact landry's decision on coming back next year?
I say run it until it's stopped. Remember, the Sooners were atrocious in the red zone with the regular offense earlier in the season. Now, OU scores TDs about every time inside the 10. The reason? The Belldozer.
No, the Belldozer will have no bearing on Landry's NFL decision.
Landry Jones. Stays for SR year or go Pro?Ronnell Lewis. Same question?
My prediction: The Hammer leaves, Landry stays.
Do you think there's any chance that Bob fires Willie Martinez at the end of the season. We know how the secondary has looked at times this season and Bob and Willie had an awfully heated exchange during the Baylor game, which makes one wonder if Willie might be in trouble.
If any coach was going to be fired, it would be Willie for the all the reasons you just mentioned. But Stoops has never fired an assistant before. It's hard to see him starting now.
I'm not trying to make too big a deal of Blake Bell's INT against ISU, but what evidence do we have that he can someday be THE QB and not just a short yardage specialist?
We don't. And everyone that assumes Bell will automatically succeed Landry are getting ahead of themselves. Bell will have to show he's the best QB in OU's normal offense. That won't be the Belldozer.
Are our receivers that bad? How many drops Saturday? 10? We're gonna need to catch the ball vs OSU to score and put pressure on them.
OU was playing without its two-best WRs Sat. (Yes, Jaz is better than Stills right now). Getting Jaz back will help. But if the Sooners drop passes and are unable to sustain drives, they will get smoked Sat.
Trying to be objective here, but in what area is OSU better than OU? I'd break it down this way: passing game, push; running game, advantage OU; run defense, advantage OU; pass defense, push.....maybe give special teams to OSU. Am i just a big OU homer?
Big homer. I see the matchups this way:QB: OSURB: OSUWR: OSUOL: OSUDL: OULB: EvenDB: EvenST: OSU
Who will be at TE for OU next season?
Austin Haywood, Max Stevenson and Laith Harlow.
Might OU & OSU get in BCS if we get the automatic bid and OSU get the at-large
That's possible. OU wins the Big 12 and goes to the Fiesta. OSU goes to the Sugar as an at-large.
Is Stoops still quiet on the fate of is brother Mike's possible role at OU?
All quiet on the Stoops front.
Which team has the edge on defense going into this game?
OU still has the edge, but I don't know how big of an edge with the Hammer out and the secondary struggling. What the Sooners do have that the Cowboys don't is a big-time pass rushing end in Frank Alexander.
Is there any chance the Hammer sees the field on Saturday? Bob's been misleading about injuries more than once this year.
I mentioned the very same thing last week. I have not heard a single thing to suggest Ronnell will play. But you're right, it wouldn't be the first time Stoops pulled off a misdirection with injuries.
If Coach V takes a head coaching job do you think Mike Stoops comes back as the def coord? Would that really solve the issues in the secondary? I mean they would run the same scheme with a lot of zone coverage.
That's the most likely scenario that gets Mike back to Norman. Mike is a great secondary coach. There's no question OU would benefit from his presence.
What do we have waiting in the wings to get us excited that the defense can get better, particularly in the secondary? I'm actually pretty excited about what our offense could look like next year with Brandon Williams a year older and Dom Whaley back and healthy.
Julian Wilson, Quentin Hayes, James Haynes are intriguing prospects in the secondary, but if they were good enough, they'd be playing. You're right. Talent wise, the future of the offense is a lot brighter than the future of the defense.
if landry returns, where would ou be among national title favorites next year?
Preseason Top 5, maybe higher.
hey jake, who do you like saturday? why?
Prediction will be up on SoonerNation Friday morning.
What do you think of the chances of O getting Dorial Green Beckham? Also I am seeing that OU is having problems getting top talent at the corner and safety and linebacker postions. How will they fix this problem?
The Sooners remain in the mix with Green-Beckham.
Corey Nelson was a big-time recruit at LB. DeVante Harris is a highly recruit defensive back the Sooners already have a commitment from.
Not OU related but are you surprised Turner Gill has already been fired after only 2 years. Why didn't he succeed?
A little surprised, but Kansas was going in the wrong direction. Kansas is almost an impossible place to win at. Shows what a great job Mangino did while he was there.
Any chance we can bring Mangino back to coach the OL. Our run blocking hasn't been the same since he left.
Given how things ended at Kansas, I don't know how comfortable the OU admin would feel about bringing Mangino back.
How much is the weather going to factor into this weekends game? Who does it favor?
Could be a huge factor. Both teams are so similar offensively, I'm not really sure who will get affected most.
What's the key to Landry beating the Pokes---he's been off----he may have to get out of the pocket more and run when he can--and more trick plays wouldn't hurt---it got Texas back in the game last week.
Limit turnovers, stretch out the defense with shots downfield, get some help from his receivers. I disagree, Landry has been playing well the last few weeks. He's holding this offense together. If OU wins this weekend, it will be because of him.
It seems Landry has been off lately---he's telegraphing his passes---even with less talent now in receivers, the coaches should put him in higher percentage schemes----any thoughts?
Weather was the major issue against Iowa State. Hard to complete passes against 40 mph gusts. Landry seems off because he doesn't have the best WR in college football to throw to anymore.
What do you think of Landry's progress from last year to this year?
He hasn't had the overall kind of season that I thought he might. I see a little bit of stagnation.
if ou played in a conference where there wasn't so many good qb's do you think there defense would be this criticized
People need to remember what kind of league the Big 12 is. Everyone gives up points in this league.
Fellow Sooner fans, calm the heck down. The teams who have won a title since OU's 2000 victory are as follows:1) Miami - irrelevant and facing massive sanctions.2) Ohio State - Just went 6-6, facing significant sanctions.3) LSU - on top, but with a different coaching staff that was ridiculed as recently as last year.4) USC - facing massive sanctions, jury still out on Kiffin to some extent.5) Texas - 7-4 and happy to be there, has lost Red River twice in a row and totally lacks offensive identity.6) Florida - 6-6 and going nowhere.7) Alabama - Doing great, but didn't matter until Saban's arrival. We have it very, very, very good.
We'll wrap things up with that post. Thanks everyone for stopping by. Stay with SoonerNation for all your Bedlam coverage this week. Should be another great one Saturday.
