Jerry is here!
Is Marshawn Lynch made of steel? I think that playoff game against the Saints proved it.
I like Marshawn. I think he's really good. He's scored 4 or 5 TDs in the last 6 weeks or something. I like him as a back. I think the Seattle team is a good young team. I'm wondering a little bit about what Pete Carroll is doing at QB. But I like what I've seen the last few years and the acquisitions and the draft. But we're in a transition with Hasselback moving on. We're really hurting at QB.
Jerry, you're in the Alice in Chains FFB league and you're always killing it against the competition. Do the guys ever give you crap about rigging things in your favor?
Actually, I think last year I was in the Super Bowl and I was 9-4. I'm 8-3 this year and doing really well. But I think the first year I sucked and didn't even make the playoffs. I've only been playing fantasy football the last 6 years. I'm coming into things. Coming into playoff time, you'll get some unlikely guys doing well for you.
William and Sean have a couple of friends helping them run their teams. Sean will make the playoffs. My team severely underperformed last week. It's a close race for the last playoff spot.
Is there a p layer you always try to get on your fantasy football teams?
I seem to end up with Anquain Boldin every year. I like him. He's a solid player. He's not flashy, but he's always worth 8-12 points. That's all you really need. The last few weeks have been dry for him, but he seems to be a steady guy. Mike Wallace was a guy that I went after this year. I went after Mike Vick with my first pick this year and was wrong like everyone else. He's going to go on his third week with missing a game. I'm RB heavy and WR light. I was forced to deal away my top receiver, Steve Smith, today to get Cam Newton. I'll have to do some waiver wire work at WR. Cooper is coming on, especially with DeSean Jackson acting up. Newton, he'll get you points and that's what you need.
Another thing to thing about is guys who will be used when teams sit people. Like Hunter, I'm sure the 49ers will sit some guys when teams are sitting guys the last few weeks.
How crazy was it getting back out on tour a couple of years ago after so many years away from it?
It was good. Geez, we started playing in 2005 and doing some shows. It kind of grew into something a lot larger than we anticipated. It was all good. Some of the best things in life are those that are unexpected. To recreate ourselves without losing our identity and having the fans support us through that and have the quality of music come out like it did. Transitioning from the old lineup of the band and moving on, it was a lot. It's a career worth of changes in 6-7 years. It's nice to have a second life and we're in the midst of that.
How was it with Vinnie Paul at Thanksgiving?
We did spend it together. My ranch is in Southeast Oklahoma, so maybe an hour and half away from Dallas. I always fly into Dallas and drive up to the ranch. I always stop in see Vinnie. We saw some comedians and went to the comedy club. It seems to be his tradition with the holiday. We went to the ranch and had some time with the family. I went hunting with my dad, sister and niece. Everyone got something but me. I didn't see anything. It's kind of a tradition. Not only do I get to go home, but I always stop to see Vinnie. He's family too. He's doing pretty good too. He's got a shot at getting into the playoffs as well.
He's in a three-team tie. This week is critical.
Hey Jerry! How do you choose your charity that profits from the fantasy football league? There are so many good ones! Do you just pick one, or do you search until you find one that really touches you?
My nephew has autism, so I played for Autism Speaks the last few years. A few of my cousin's kids are on the spectrum as well. So I tried to change it up this year. MusiCares is something I care about as well. We change it up every couple of years and decided to play for them this year. They do a lot for a lot of people.
Jerry,I felt Black Gives Way to Blue was the best Rock album of 2009. I have read that you are working with the band to record a follow up. Is there any timeframe on when we can expect to hear it?
Whenever we're done. Schedules in music, I know people have done it and say you need an album out by this date and you're talking about album tour, it can burn you out quickly. It did with our band. We've been fortunate to be partnered up with companies that respect the process. We're never really forced to make music. If it doesn't happen, then it doesn't. We've been writing a lot. I also had shoulder surgery earlier this year. I'm at the tail end of rehabbing that. That put us back a little bit. But we have some stuff. We'll do some writing. Hopefully we'll have it out next year. We'll put it out when we feel that it's worth putting out.
How psyched are you that you've had so much success in this league against some of your musical peers?
It's great. It's fun every year. I've been a football fan since I was a kid. That's why I have two favorite teams. I've been into football since before the Seahawks existed. But I'm a loyal guy. I was watching the Steelers when I was 6-7 years old. Those were legendary teams. That got me into football. The last two years have been great. The run against Meatloaf last year was great because he's a pro at picking players. He said he plays in 30-40 leagues and wins about 75% of them. I had to work really hard to get him in the league. He told me I didn't want me in his league because he'd win. I told him to bring it and he did. The other thing I like about the league is having a bunch of different people. A lot of great athletes, musicians, actors have been in and out of it. Mike's and I's idea was to have fun doing this. It's something we do anyway, but it's also something cool to do to raise money and awareness for charities.
If u had to choose one player from all time to lead your fantasy team who would it be?
Aw jeez that's hard. An era would be better. Right now, it's got to be Aaron Rodgers. I like AP too. He's always been solid. Rarely injured, though he's out this week and last. Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson both of those guys are amazing. At TE, I like Witten. He seems always to be right up there. I like Janikowski as a kicker. He had 6 field goals. That's nuts.
And the Steelers D, of course. Consistently good.
How do you feel about the shows in Chile and Brazil?? Will AIC be back with a complete show?? Love you Jerry!!
We did that a few weeks ago. We hadn't been down there since '93. We did two shows there. This time we got a chance to go to another country. The people there were so nice. The crowds were great. We played with a lot of our buddies and guys we admire. I got to go golfing in Santiago. It was beautiful. The course was right below the mountain range there. I didn't bring my clubs or shoes. People are shorter down there, so I'm just wacking it all over the place. I'm golfing in my Chuck Taylors. By the 13-14 hole, my feet are killing me. The shows were great, the people were exceptionally nice. I'd love to get back.
How did the 49ers become good, all of a sudden?
They've had really good players on the team. They've been accumulating some good players the last few years. I don't claim to be an expert. I'm a fan so I pay attention. I would imagine it's like anything else. It's an intangible thing or the right combination of the players and coach. With the change of Harbaugh coming in. Keeping Smith who's been through a different coordinator every year, he has knowledge of the team. I think that really shows.
You've got to be happy with your current fantasy standings! Is it pure brilliance or experience that keeps you on top?
Fantasy football is about 75% luck, I think. For instance, my team last week, which you would think be killing it, I can't come up with 78 points to beat my opponent. Between Michael Bush, Mendenhall, Davis, Turner, the Jets D and everyone else, I only got 64 points. What?! A lot of it is luck. There are certain things you can do, with matchups and things like that, you can put yourself in a position not to lose. It's all about who performs and who doesn't.
One week to go in the season and then the playoffs start. This is when it gets ugly. We'll see what happens. Thanks to everybody for paying attention. Hopefully we'll raise some decent money for the charities we're working with. Then I'll look forward to doing it again next year. I'll see who else I can wrangle up for it.
