Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:01 PM)

I had to stop watching "No Country For Old Men" so we could chat. I have mixed emotions about that, but I'm going to do my best to be a good host...lol....We can talk Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, Stars, college football, Urban Meyer, some high school playoffs and whatever else tickles your fancy. Let's roll

raul (rio grande city Texas)

JJT, is it possible that TNEW will stay as a backup for next year or will he look for starter money elsewhere?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

I wouldn't think so. The Cowboys don't want a backup at more than $9 million per year. Anyway, he's not a $9 million a year player. He's been solid this season, but there's been too much up and down for a high-caliber player. He'll go start next year with someone else and the Cowboys will go with Scandrick and Jenkins, but they'll also need to draft another cornerback.

Ace Airspeed (Moon Base Alpha)

Greetings from the moon! Should Rob Ryan get selected for a head coach position and he takes Matt Eberflus with him. Who do you think would be a viable replacement to run the defense?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

That's a good question, but I have no idea. I don't know that Ryan has done enough to get a head job after this season. Has this defense been great? I don't think so. It's been good much of the time, but there have been some fourth quarter meltdowns. That said, if he did leave, you'd have to look at some of the top 3-4 teams and see who's available

Vinnie Vinci (Laurence Harbor, New Jersey)

JJT,I hope you had a nice holiday!!!I know getting Mike Jenkins back will help the secondary but this Alan Ball guy is absolutely HORRIBLE!!! I can't believe he is still on the team

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

What you have to remember is that Ball is a 4th CB. How many 4th CBs in the league get beat on a regular basis, when overexposed? Quite a few. He's a bottom of the roster, who can help in a pinch but who has been exposed because injuries have forced him to play too much

Donnell (NC)

What is the probability that Miles Practices and Plays this week?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

slim and none. He'll be back next week.

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

Do you see a little more incorporation of Victor Butler? I've been saying that they need to play him more because all he does is make plays.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

They've been trying to work him into the pass rush by using him some at defensive tackle, so he can attack guards. But Spencer is by far the better run defender and Spencer, overall, is a more effective pass rusher. Butler, though, does seem to have a knack for making plays. I wouldn't mind seeing him a little more

Donnell (NC)

Are we as good/bad as we look right now or are we coming to a part in our schedule that will show just how good/bad we really are? GiantsX2, TB, Philly, and Arizona.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

I don't know yet. I don't think anyone does. The schedule has provided some weaker opponents and the Cowboys have taken care of their business, something they haven't always done. Give them a handclap. But I'm looking for that quality victory over a quality opponent, which I haven't seen yet. If things continue along the same path, Dallas looks like its going to win the NFC East and then we'll see what happens in the postseason

PL (SC)

Mr. J.J.T.---please tell me you have changed your mind about the boyz now!!They have won the games that they should have regardless of the score.Give them some credit please!!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

I've given them credit for beating bead teams. They're playing better, but I still have no idea where they fit into the NFC hierarchy. Maybe, they're the third-best team. Perhaps, the fourth. If they keep winning, they'll get whatever credit they're supposed to get

J (Fort Worth, TX)

With the harsher taxes not set to kick in for a couple of years and with Terry and Kidd's contract are at there last year what creative things do you think the Mavs can do in order to keep the likes of Chandler Barea and Butler around and if they cant keep one or the other who out there in the market would be a suitable replacement for each in your opinion?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

We don't know yet what all of the salary cap rules and regulations are supposed to be. It's going to take a minute to figure it all out. Chandler is at the top of the list. I wouldn't pay the cost for Butler, but that's me. Barea is worth a raise, but I'm not paying him $5 million a year. See, it's all relative and it has to all be worked out

Todd (Pa)

How do you think the Cowboys should hadle the WR snaps once Austin comes back. Seems in recent weeks Robinson has not only been the most productive but most trusted by Romo. He is their #1 right now do u really minimize Robinson snaps now that Miles is back. I certainly hope not. Thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Really? we live in such a Twitter, Facebook world where if a dude is gone. Robinson is having a great year - he has more TDs this year than his entire career- but don't get it twisted. He's not better than Miles Austin. We've seen Miles Austin dominate a game several times in his career. Robinson has one 100-yard game, against Detroit, and that came this season. Austin is a legit No.1 receiver. Frankly, he'll make Robonson even more effective because he'll get to go against a 2nd or 3rd corner from time to time with Austin on the field.

Chris (Work)

Is Kolb playing this week? If so will Fitz torch our secondary, or will that happen regardless of their QB?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

don't know about Kolb, but Skelton has played the past 4 games. He's averaging 4 catches for 71 yards in that span. He's really their only weapon, so you would think the Cowboys could slow him down, but after the past two weeks there are no guarantees.

Austin (Houston)

Cowboys clinch Dec 11. Do they go into "rest the starters mode," or potentially try to steal the 2nd seed from SF? (Assuming SF loses 2 more games. With their schedule, it's possible)

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

Heck no. Y'all are going this team way too much credit. They have beaten some bad teams and they deserve credit, but watch the games. Do you see a team that can play with Green Bay right now? Unless you do, they need to continue to work as hard as they can to get better

Jason (Nashville)

The Arizona game seems like a classic trap game for the Cowboys. Do you think the coaching staff can get the team focused or is a let down inevitable?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

I would agree with that. Won 4 in a row. Arizona is bad. Again. The Giants next week. This is why Jason Garrett always wants his guys to live in the moment - not the past or the future

Jordan (McKinney)

what are the chances that Dallas could win out? And yes i realize they havnt won th division and they havnt even clinched a playoff sopt and they could even lose and every other scenario that could happen, so please answer the question instead of giving a non-answer.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

Zero.

Mike (Scranton)

Hi JJT,Love your work..looks like your buckeyes are headed back to nat'l prominence with the Urban Meyer hire..anyway can you envision the boys hiring either or both norv turner and/or tony sporano?? I know Garrett wont relinquish play calling but maybe hiring norv as a consultant can have a positive on the offensive side of the ball..and maybe hire sporano back as O line coach since Houck is older than dirt...thoughts??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

every San Diego loss brings Norv Turner a step closer to being the Cowboys' offensive coordinator. I don't know if he'd want to do that, or if Garrett would be open to it. But it would be a perfect fit because they run the same offense and Turner is committed to running the ball. Besides, Turner is like Wade, a fantastic coordinator, who's not a good head coach

Chris (Chandler, AZ)

Why not re-work T Newman's contract like other NFL teams do? Cutting him means replacing him. It seems with Jerry it's either overpay or cut the player.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

What if he doesn't want his deal reworked - and he doesn't. Both sides have to agree to a restructuring.

Dan (Hbg, PA )

Can the return of Mike Jenkins make this secondary okay to beat good teams?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

Jenkins was playing well before he was hurt. I wouldn't expect him to play at that level in his first game back after being out for several weeks. Maybe, he'll surprise us

Anthony (Toronto)

JJT... As much as I love D-Ware, I've noticed that when this team needs a play or a stop from the D, he tends to disappear. Is this a valid observation or am I just expecting too much from a player that many consider to be the best defensive player in the league. If we react so harshly to Romo not making a play at the end of the game shouldn't we do the same with him?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

The dude has a league-leading 14 sacks and is among the favorites for defensive player of the year. The difference between Romo and Ware is that Romo has the ball in his hands every single time and his decisions often lead to victory or defeat. Ware can be double - or triple-teamed. Or the offense can run away from him. It's hard to sack the quarterback. He's rushed 356 times and has only 14 sacks, yet is an elite player. His job is among the hardest in the league.

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

since you're a ohio state alum, curious on your take on the urban meyer hiring. also, is ohio state in the clear regarding ncaa sanctions? if so, seems that they got off almost scotch free compared to usc.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

great hire. Proven winner. There may be some other sanctions coming, but they fired the guy who covered up the situation. There's a difference between trading your stuff for tattoos and academic fraud or agents and boosters paying players. That's my biased view.

Jordan (McKinney)

Thank you for answeing. Didnt mean to be rude but in the past ive seen you dance around similiar questions

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

i don't dance around answers. If I don't know, I say I don't know. If I don't have an opinion on an issue, I'll say I don't have any opinion. It's like I tell my kids, I don't have to lie to you. what are you going to do to me?

Todd (Pa)

What i meant was he was the #1 WHILE Austin was out n what do you do with him now that Miles is back. Put him back as the #3 WR n then he will not be on the field on occasions? i dont agree with dropping his playing time is what im saying. Of course i know Miles is a great player.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

Miles is better, so robinson has to get in where he fits in. Garrett will find plays for him.

raul (rio grande city texas)

What about Jack Del Rio the former cowboy to be the next DC if Ryan leaves to be a head coach?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

he's a 4-3 guy. I don't think he'd be a good fit

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

JJT, so you are saying Newman would not want his contract reworked even though he KNOWS he is not playing at a level worth $9 million? What happened to players wanting to be paid fairly when they don't live up to their contract? As much as they want a raise when they are playing great, shouldn't they want a decrease in salary when they have not played well?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

Who said he KNOWS that? Look at it from your perspective. Let's assume you're a good employee who had an average year at work instead of your usual great year. Would you VOLUNTEER for a pay cut? I don't know any honest person who would.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Since you live in Big 12 country, are the fans their delusional about the Big 12 being as competitive as the SEC? I live in the delusional land of Arkansas where even after the beatdown by LSU, the fans here still think they are part of the conference elite.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

Nope. The BIg 12 is well aware as is every other conference in the country that, right now, the SEC rules. It won't always be like that, but that's the case right now. They have the best coaches and the best players. it's cyclical.

Trey (Dallas tx)

What back up plan do you see for saving the season if the Mavs are not able to sign Chandler? If they choose not to sign him is it fair to think that we are creating cap room for a possible Dwight Howard signing?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

If they don't sign Chandler, they'll probably try to keep JJ and create cap room for 2012 when Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Howard will be free.

Trey (Dallas)

With all the head coaching jobs becoming available do you see Rob Ryan in Dallas again next year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

yes. I haven't seen enough, as of today, to hire him as a head coach.

Donnell (NC)

Do you see GB as the SB champ right now? Most People say play the games because anything can happen, but in the same breathe, they say it's a done deal.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

As of today, the Packers would have to be the favorite. But you have to play the game. Upsets happen for a reason.

Mike (Work)

When only considering the games the CBs have played this year, which has been the best so far?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

Jenkins. Easy.

Mike (Work)

So Romo is winning games and had 2 game winning drives in the last week but gets no mention from the national media. What gives? He's the talk of the nation if he plays poorly but its rarely acknowledged when he has comeback wins and/or plays really well.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

I can't speak for the national media. It might have something to do with the two losing teams they played

tom (dallas)

is there any way that we get prince fielder

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

If the Rangers choose to spend 160 million over 7 or 8 years they can get him. I don't think they want to do that.

Shawn (Ashe County,NC)

JJt, Does NO have a real chane of beating Greenbay if they were to meet?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

Absolutely. They have a great offense.

Mike (Work)

Considering Boeheim let ball boys go on road trips and saw 1 accuser in Fine's hotel room, why is he not getting ripped like Paterno did? At least, Paterno didn't call any accusers money-grubbing liars.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

he's been getting quote a bit of criticism

RK (Dallas)

JJT, in watching the SMU-Rice game on TV, I was amazed at the number of empty seats at Ford Field. What will it take for Dallas people to show up to the games? Apparently 3 bowl-bound teams in the last 3 years isn't enough.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

SMU lost its momentum when it got blasted by Southern Miss 27-3 and 38-7 by Tulsa. It lost 4 of 5 after a 5-1 start. That's among the reasons they drew such a puny crowd in the final game

Mike (Work)

Is it officially time to drop Felix Jones from my fantasy team or should I hang on to him in case DeMarco Murray gets hurt?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

you're about a 6 weeks late bruh

Jordan (McKinney)

Heres a good comment i heard on the Herd earlier. Collin Cowherd said he thinks Dallas matches up very well with Greenbay and could beat them. You agree or think hes crzy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

On a given day, the Cowboys could beat the Packers. Rob Ryan could trick it up, Tony Romo could match Aaron Rodgers and DeMarco Murray gives the Cowboys a running game to control the clock. As Ron Washington says, "The best team doesn't always win. The best team on that day wins."

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

Is this the first time you're watching No Country for Old Men? Great f-ing movie!!!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

I've seen it several times. I'm just watching it by myself and soaking in all of the scenes this AM without commentary from family members

tom (dallas)

do you see the rangers losing thad levine to houston

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

Too early in the process, but he's a terrific candidate and he deserves an opportunity soon. He's not going to be here much longer.

Hop (Dallas)

Seems in watching your post game videos that you don't think much of the cowboys. Your view seems to be In the wacky parody ridden NFL, you just have to shrug your and recite "a wins a win a win." That about sum it up?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

There's a difference between winning and playing well and winning. The Cowboys have won the last two weeks. I don't know that anyone thinks they have played well. But they get credit for winning. I'm still looking for a signature win over a good team.

ed (marksville)

why people so hard on you? don't they understand you have a job and it's not to be a fan?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

lol...part of the job...It has no effect on me...Most people think you're supposed to root for the home team, which is not the case. You're supposed to tell the truth about the home team whether it's good or bad.

Stevo ((UK))

Will the Cowboys look to replace Costa next season, he's been the weak link on a fairly average offensive line

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

He's been playing a lot better lately

Greg (North Carolina)

Do you think Robinson's production will get him interest from another team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

sure, but he has a role in Dallas. Garrett likes him and he's productive.

James (Charlotte)

Why is everyone so quick to forget about Miles Austin don't get me wrong I love what Robinson is doing but Miles Austin will help Dez Witten Robinson & even Murray more because you can't double team either one of those cuz it leaves on of them open

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:58 PM)

no idea. All I can do is shake my head.

nate K. (sioux falls)

what it's the cowboys going to with the FB postion

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

I don't know. You don't want to add Chapas just to add a FB. You need to add a player who can get the job done at a high level.

Jason (Bmore)

As with General Coachspeak, Garrett claims he wants to get Felix more involved. Do you think this will happen, or is DeMarco too good to take off the field?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

Murray is the starter. Jones has to get in where he fits in. He blew his opportunity.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

Time to finish watching my movie. Take care and be blessed. Even you HT. We'll chat again next week.
