Welcome to my 3pm eastern chat. I'm here in sunny Palm Springs for the PGA Tour Q-school
Who do you prefer as a colour commentator - Johnny Miller or Faldo? Someone else?
Miller is by and far the best golf analyst. He's not always right or fair but he's always honest.
The one course you'd die for (figuratively) to play is.....?
St. Andrews. It's public.
Biggest story lines heading into 2012 (not including Tiger-lines)?
In 2012, the biggest storyline will center around if one player can become dominant again or if we'll see more of the parity that we saw this year.
Who wins more in 2012 - Tiger or Stevie (er, I mean Adam Scott)
Adam Scott will win more than Tiger because he's better putter at this point in his career.
Farrell- if you took a poll of all professional golfers regarding what major they would want if they could only win 1, what would it look like? I got - 50% Masters; 30% British; 20% US Open; <1% PGA
What is the Easiest Golf Course that you Played on? What is the Easiest Golf Course on the PGA Tour?
Chris,I grew up playing many 6,000 yard munis in rural Georgia towns and in inner city Atlanta. That's too hard of a question. The easiest course on the PGA Tour is probably the courses they use for the old Bob Hope Classic, now the Humana Challenge.
Does Phil win another major?
Phil's best shot is at the Masters for another major. I would say the same for Tiger.
When does the European's tour end? I think it's still going on and when does it start for 2012?
The European Tour season never ends. It has so many co-sanctioned events with other tours. For example, the Nedbank Challenge on the Sunshine Tour, being played this week in South Africa, is a European Tour event.
Why such a limited field with only 18 players at Chevron?
Chevron is free money for the very top players. It's exclusive.
Will Phil ever play the Chevron again? Seemed at the President's Cup him and Tiger were a little friendlier to each other than what the perception is.
Ed,Tiger and Phil are cool with each other. It's nothing personal around Phil's absence at the Chevron. He likes to be around home as much as possible. He never plays in the season-opening Hyundai tournament of Champion because he wants a longer vacation with his family. Remember golf has a very long season.
Farrell, TW was 45th (as opposed to top 10 for most of the previous decade) on tour this year in putting (if he'd played enough rounds to be ranked), Scott was 143.
Are you paying more attention to q-school or Chevron this week?
Bob Harig is at the Chevron for ESPN.Com and I'm here in Palm Springs for Q-school.
Oh hey cool, for those of with serious issues, who are some people we should be paying attention to at q-school? (outside of ty tryon)
Hudson Swafford and Harris English are two recent Georgia graduates who are both 6'4 and really good players. They will play their first two rounds together. Pay close attention to Sam Saunders, Arnie's grandson.
Long range projection question, but why not - slow time of year for golf. Taking the 2011 President's Cup team - who doesn't get on the 2012 Ryder Cup team and who replaces them.
Keegan Bradley replaces either Dustin Johnson or Bubba Watson on the 2012 Ryder Cup team.
How many courses do they play at the final round of Q school. Are the courses overly difficult?
The six rounds are played over two courses: the Nicklaus course and the Stadium course. Willie McGirt told me a few minutes ago that Pete Dye was trying to real maim players when he designed the Stadium course. It's a long target golf course with a lot of bunkers. The Nicklaus course is very demanding around the greens, but a lot more playable off the tee than the Dye monster.
At Royal Melbourne - the course was not considered long but played very difficult. Is it as simple as the greens were like a skating rink or were other factors at play?
Wind and fast undulating greens can make a 5,500 yard golf course difficult.
Typically how many of the 150 players are in actual contention come last round of Q school finals? Must be a pressure packed day!!!!
They are all playing for something. There are the 20-odd guys who get regular PGA Tour status. Then there is the next group trying to get full status on the Nationwide Tour. Then there are the rest of guys who will get conditional status on the Nationwide. Look at it this way, there are 173 guys fighting for the livelihoods.
What's the atmosphere like at q-school?
So the statement or quote of The Dominance of Tiger is pretty much a thing of the past.?? with you saying one major and only at the masters..?? is that accurate
Jeff,It's likely that Tiger's next victory will be at the Masters as well as his next one after that. He's never going to be dominant again the way that he was from 2000 to 2009. To Shoshana's question about Q-school. It's a long week. One round can't knock you out of contention. The players are really nervous by Sunday. You're fighting for your life and there is no unemployment compensation for these guys if they don't make it.
Any thoughts on the Aussie dust-up? Thought Ogilvy and Allenby liked each other?
I was surprised by that. Ogilvy is an easygoing guy, but Allenby can be difficult. I'm sure it's overblown.
Do you believe DJ's knee problem and now surgery had an effect on him at the President's Cup?
Ray, Dustin doesn't like pressure. I think he would agree that the surgery was always planned after the Presidents Cup and that his poor play was on account of poor ball striking and a generally mediocre short game.
Gary Woodland = DJ 2.0? or flash in the pan?
Gary Woodland is a nice player. He can hit it a mile. But is he the second coming of Dustin Johnson? He has to win more and contend in the majors to rank with DJ.
No DJ on the 2012 Ryder Cup team? Worried about him long-term game?
Andrew,DJ has a lot of talent but I don't know how bad he wants it. He knows that he can be very successful with minimal effort. So why kill himself?
Who do you see making a big jump up the rankings in 2012? and who takes a fall (a la TW and Furyk this year)
Webb Simpson is going to win a major in 2012. Keegan Bradley might take a slide next year. He's putting a lot of pressure on himself to follow up that rookie year with a decent sophomore campaign.
Do you think Phil will stick with the belly putter next year? Will it cure his short putt issues and lead to a big year?
Tom,Phil didn't use the belly putter at the Presidents Cup. That was only a momentary diversion for a notorious tinkerer.
Why can't Phil consistently put his driver in the fairway. Considering he is one of the best player's in the world, practices all the time, is a technician and has a superb coach in Harmon - it seems crazy he can't drive it straight.
Ed,Phil has a long, athletic golf swing and it's difficult to consistency hit fairways with that kind of free flowing motion. Butch has tried to make him more compact, but Phil can't play that way. For the most part, he doesn't need to hit every fairway to win tournaments. But at the U.S. OPen particularly he has to hit fairways with his driver.
The PGA Tour rules officials are running me out of the Media trailer. Seems they have rules to discuss in the middle of my chat.
booo rules people, thanks Farrell
Stay with me all week for news and commentary from Q-school.
"He knows that he can be very successful with minimal effort. So why kill himself?" What % of players does this apply to and, who are those that REALLY want it.
One last response to John. Dustin is a competitor, for sure, but is he mentally ready for the next level? That's all I'm saying. He would do well to have a Corey Pavin career. It's not about how long you hit the ball. So long.
