Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

As I have Guns N Roses (the old version with Slash in the band) blaring on my computer, let's rock and roll !

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Where will the 2012 NHL All-Star Game Be Played at?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:02 PM)

Ottawa my friend, Jan. 28-29 at Scotiabank Place

Jake (NY)

Pierre, I have a fantasy hockey question. I have three goalies on my roster. Jaroslav Halak, Jose Theodore and Antti Niemi. They all have games on Saturday. Halak faces the Chicago Blackhawks, Theodore faces the San Jose Sharks, and Niemi faces the Florida Panthers. I can only start two. Assuming all three are in net, who should I start and play?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:02 PM)

sorry jake, I'm not a fantasy writer !

Joshua Sung (Washington, D.C.)

Hi Pierre,I am disappointed in how the Caps are playing after our hot start. It is definitely frustrating in how Ovechkin is playing, but I look at our defense is not stepping, our goalies aren't stopping the pucks, etc. I had a feeling Boudreau would be fired sometime. What do you think the Caps need to do and Dale Hunter need to do and do you think Dale Hunter can help the players rebound from this disappointing 15 games or so?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:04 PM)

My first priority would be to shore up special teams. Caps 17th on PP and 21st on PK. Way too low for a team with this talent. Once you shore that up, the rest comes

Gerry (San Francisco, CA)

Is there any truth to the Bobby Ryan trade rumors? It is very surprising to see a player of his stature to be on the trading block.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:05 PM)

As I wrote last night in my blog, http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/12599/rumblings-ducks-next-move-millers-future-in-buffalo-labor-deal-talk, multiple sources have confirmed to me that yes indeed the Ducks are LISTENING on Ryan. That doesn't mean they're shopping him. But if and when a team is ready to blow Anaheim out of the water with an offer (think 2-3 pieces), then Ducks might think about it. But it's not a sure thing.

Charles (MA)

Pierre great work as always...my question is the Bruins that is pretty obvious the Bruins have shaken off their Stanley Cup hangover...are they the best team in hockey? They have to be pretty close

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:08 PM)

Boston, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Detroit, Vancouver and Chicago _ for my money they are my six top teams in no particular order. I know Minnesota has surprised, Philly has done well, St. Louis is charging, Rangers have been terrific, but those top 6 teams above I'll take to the bank

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Pierre, do you expect Paul Holmgren to make a move to acquire a defenseman now that Pronger is out for a while?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:09 PM)

I mean, for sure they're keeping an eye on what's out there, but what's out there? Tampa, Rangers and other teams have been looking for D all season and still haven't made a deal. They don't grow on trees

Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario)

With the hiring of Muller and Hunter, which coaches are is NHL ready? and/or which NHL coaches are patiently waiting for that phone call?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:13 PM)

Well I think Marc Crawford, Michel Therrien and Craig MacTavish all deserve another chance _ they're all terrific coaches in my mind.Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins I think will be a great NHL head coach one day. Some NHL assistant coaches that deeserve a shot one day as well: Lane Lambert in Nashville, Jay Woodcroft in San Jose, Mike Haviland in Chicago.

Phil Kessel (Toronto, ON)

Pierre, I am currently 21 points ahead of one of my top competitors (who shall remain nameless) for the Art Ross. Do you think I should be worried? Pat LaFontaine from 1993 just called me and said I should be very worried.....

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:15 PM)

Actually you're 20 points ahead of Sidney Crosby and yes, you should be worried. I would also worry about Claude Giroux, the pride of Hearst, Ontario :)

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, I tried to ask this last week but you didn't have a chat. As a Pens fan I was obviously thrilled with the Crosby comeback game. But as a New Yorker that wants hockey to thrive there on all levels, I was a little disappointed to once again see the Islanders set up as patsies. And they played right into their hands by starting a rookie goalie making his NHL debut on the biggest possible stage...rather than their available "franchise" goalie Rick DiPietro. Can you explain that? Do you think they (not so) secretly wanted to shield DiPi from further embarassment by having Crosby torch him on national TV.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:16 PM)

I can't explain what the Islanders do, I'm sorry, I just can't. Was ridiculous to start a rookie goalie in that game. I'd be surpirsed if Jack Capuano lasted the season

Joe (Chicago)

Where do you think Bobby Ryan willl end up?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:17 PM)

Long list of teams calling Anaheim the last few days.... impossible to predict...Toronto, Carolina, Buffalo are among a LONG LIST of teams that I know have inquired but who knows IF and when he's dealt. My sense is that Anaheim will be very PATIENT and only make this deal if they hit a home run.

wit (quincy,il)

the blues are playing fantastic right now. with perron almost ready to come back and maybe mcdonald do you see them possibly making a trade to make them a even better team.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:18 PM)

I know when I spoke with Doug Armstrong at the GMs meeting recently he seemed to indicate that his team would stay put for now... take time to stabilize things... my sense is that closer to Feb. 27 they'll look at where they are in the standings and act accordingly

Mike (Boston)

I know it's early to talk about the trade deadline but a lot of rumors here in Boston about the Bruins looking to trade Krecji. What do you think are the chances they do this and what do you think they can get back for him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:19 PM)

I know one source I trust told me yesterday and IF and WHEN Jarome Iginla were to made available _ and that's a big IF _ Boston would certainly inquire

yuri (Long Beach, CA)

do the kings fire terry murray? will someone get waived when penner returns? do they even have a chance at booby ryan, or maybe alexander semin is possible?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:21 PM)

I would say this: they better start winning at home

Ice Ace (Alabama)

Saw Wild play Lightning on Monday and they looked good defensively as usual with Cal C leading the penalty killing unit scoring a goal in the process. Saying that, what does the Wild need to do in order to contend with the top contenders in the Western conference especially if Backstrom and Harding GAA starts to go slightly upward?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:22 PM)

27th in the NHL in goals per game; that's not going to keep them near the top. You can't play that well defensively all year long and expect to contend with zero offense

bobbyd (washington d.c.)

Looked to me like Dale Hunter was overwhelmed behind the bench last night...anyone else get the feeling he bit off more than he can chew?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:22 PM)

time will tell, you can't judge that from one game. Everyone has the butterflies the first game in

christian gendron (Montreal)

Salut Pierre,we heard a lots about the Ducks & Bobby Ryan....my question is why tradding him?..power forward are so rare

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:23 PM)

First of all, it's not guaranteed the Ducks will trade him; they are LISTENING right now.... but reason for the fact they're even listening is that team has grossly underachieved. Team needs a shake-up. But if Ryan is dealt, believe me when I say it'll be for a hefty, hefty price.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:23 PM)

Dave (New York)

How many more games until Joe Sacco gets fired out in Colorado, sickening watching them

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:24 PM)

I certainly doubt he'll finish the season...

Marcus (Tennessee)

What van my Preds do to get things turned around and start winning again?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:25 PM)

Never in my life did I ever think I would say this about the Preds: but they need to tighten up. middle of the pack in goals against. Bizarre

Doug Wilson (San Jose)

Pierre, mon ami, for the first time that I can remember I've got some cap space to play with. Where do you think I should spend it? A little more top-end scoring depth for when the first couple of lines go dead? Third/fourth line depth? A brand-new PK unit? Another puck-moving D-man (what's happened to Boyler, by the way)? Or maybe someone to stand next to Todd and repeat "no" every time he juggles his lines (Would it kill him to keep them together and try to develop some continuity? I didn't exactly bring Havlat in here to be a third-liner)? So, anyway, mon frere, where should I spend my cap space?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:26 PM)

No question in my mind I would look to improve bottom six forward group _ which in hand should help with PK. I would want to see one or two veteran, proven checking forwards added if I were a Sharks fan

Shawn (MI)

Jagr has had chronic groin issues dating back to his days in Pittsburgh. Should the flyers be concerned?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:27 PM)

Flyers knew that when they signed him. They never expected him to play 82 games

Matt (New Jersey )

Hey Pierre, do you think the Devils will resign Zach Parise to a long term deal or trade him

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:29 PM)

Impossible to tell. And anyone who says otherwise is lying to you. Lou works secretly.

Jacob (St. Louis)

With the Win last night over Washington the Blues are 8-1-2 since the coaching change. Beating top teams like, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Florida. Are they truly cup contenders this year? I know that it is still early, but the forwards on the blues team are really buying into the idea of playing defensive end of the ice. And the defense in general is absolutely amazing to watch. Thanks,

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:30 PM)

They're playoff-bound, isn't that good enough? haha

Josh (Detroit)

If/When Calgary starts on this rebuild, what do you expect the return on Iginla to be? My guess is a 1st rounder, blue chip prospect, maybe another mid-tier prospect and roster player that can help this year with an expiring contract. Do you think teams will have to add significantly to the that package? Who do you think is the favorite to acquire him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:31 PM)

I'd say two important pieces for sure

Clarence (Owen Sound, Ontario)

Redrafting based on career so far; Taylor or Tyler / Hall or Seguin?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:32 PM)

I want 'em both so I swing a series of trades a la Brian Burke in 1999 (Sedin twins) and draft 'em both

Kyle Broflovski (South Park, CO)

Pierre, who is the more frustrating Kyle right now....Turris or Okposo?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:32 PM)

Okposo

Sean (Toronto)

The same topic a million people will ask about, but here goes: Do the Leafs want Bobby Ryan, and what's the likelihood they could get him? Brian Burke's relationship with Anaheim has to count for something right? Thanks!

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

I can confirm that Toronto has talked to Anaheim about Ryan... but don't get the sense they're too far down the road on it... I think the leafs will keep tabs on it but I don't sense they're front-runners.... time will tell !

Justin (Winnipeg)

Any truth that there is a deal on the table for Iginla to the Habs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

not to my knowledge

Tim (Pittsburgh)

With all the surprise names leading the goal scoring list, which of the newcomers has the best chance to stay in the top 5 at the end of the season, (Kessel, Michalek, Neal, Giroux)

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:36 PM)

Kessel and Giroux

Louie (Tampa (By way of NYC))

How good are the Rangers to your trained eye right now? How good can they be come April? A legit Cup contender?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:36 PM)

Play a sound team game, well structured, good cap control and discipline. My fear is that blue-line is playing above its head a little right now

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

You agree with me that Kronwall has quietly become one of the top 5-10 defensemen in the game? People know him for his big hits but I don't think fans realize how great of puck mover he is.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:37 PM)

yes, I'd put him in the 5-10 range

Nick (Philadelphia, PA)

Do you think Claude Giroux has a legitimate chance to win the Hart Trophy?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:39 PM)

he does have a shot although my guess is that by the end of the season 87 in Pitt and 19 in Chitown will be the leading contenders

rob (socal)

as a ducks fan I do not support any Ryan trade without changing coaches first

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:40 PM)

Don't think that's not also being discussed/debated by Ducks management. Because it is. Will it happen? Not sure

Mark Whelan (Denver, CO)

Hi Pierre, I always appreciate your insight. What must the Avalanche management do to fix this sinking ship? With the strong early showing of Stephan Elliott, should they trade a defenseman like Quincy to get bigger up front?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:40 PM)

I think at this point a coaching change is where I'd start but it's far from the only issue.

Alice Cooper (Phoenix, AZ)

Pierre, if my hometown Coyotes end up moving to Quebec, do you think they will build their new arena out of brick or wood. OR OUT OF FIRE......BABY!

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:41 PM)

Building a House of Fire baby, buliding a House of Love !

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:44 PM)

Just got a text from an NHL GM when I asked him if his team (which shall remain nameless) would be interested in Bobby Ryan.He responds: ''29 teams would be interested."True that.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:45 PM)

Great song now playing on my ITunes: Used To Love Her by GNR

Sergei (Madison, WI)

Pierre, am I the only one, who thinks that firing BB was the best thing that happened to Caps since they drafted Ovi? I read Burnside's article about Ovi having to prove himself as NOT being a coach killer, but I must say that BB did this to himself. Ovi scored 261 goals in the first five years in the NHL-- more than any one esle. Then, because of BB's inability to teach them how to win in the playoffs he decided that they must learn to play defensive hockey 'cause that's what allegedly works'. Since then, Ovi has been struggling mightily and the team forgot how to win.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:46 PM)

I agree with Scotty on that one. The firewagon hockey didn't work in the playoffs. So the Caps tightened up. That's logical

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

Man, I wish I could be at the Joe tonight. Emotional return for Detroit's captain.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:47 PM)

wish I was there, too, but I'll settle for taking in Boston at Toronto tonight

Pierre Turgeon (Long Island)

Bonjour fellow Pierre. Can you please tell Ovechkin and Semin to get their act together. Because trust me, I know what happens when you get on Dale Hunter's bad side.....

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:48 PM)

hahahahahahahahahahahahah. That's awesome

Alex (FL)

Are u a believer of the mighty cats??

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:49 PM)

not quite yet, but they've been tremendously impressive

Brad (Philadelphia, Pa)

The flyers D is in bad shape. With the wealth of young talent that the Flyers have, could a package like Coburn, Schenn, and a 1st round pick be enough to get Shea Weber from Nashville?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:49 PM)

NOT HAPPENING

Amanda (NY)

Just wanted to say, Boston fans need to remember it's a long season, and usually teams that make it to the finals, play well in the beginning of the season and later in the season they run out of steam, since they didn't get much of a break. Remember the Flyers the year after the finals? They came out of the gate amazing...after the all star break, disaster.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:51 PM)

I've shared your thoughts with B's fans, Amanda. Thank you

Scott (Pittsburgh)

I see that you have Fleury in your top five for the Vezina. It seems like there is never much mention of him among the talk of the leagues elite goalies, and I'm wondering why this is? I'd argue that there isn't a more athletic goalie in the league. I've seen him make some amazing stops. Also, does everyone forget the 09 cup run? However, it can be very frustrating watching him give up that soft first goal. Is this why there is little mention of MAF as an "elite" goalie?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:51 PM)

overshadowed by bigger names on his teamBut it will be interesting for Canadian Olympic team in 2014 if NHLers participate: Fleury or Carey Price for No. 1 job?

Marty (Orange County)

Pierre, I would rather see Getzlaf dealt over Ryan. Bobby at least shows some energy and doesn't fall asleep on defense. Would there be a better market for Getzlaf?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:52 PM)

Star centers are harder to find and they're more valuable

Mel (Ottawa)

The Sens have been getting a quite a few wins recently, despite being pegged to finish dead last this season. Do they need to make any moves to improve their chances at a playoff spot or keep it status quo and wait for all their youngersters to gain experience and have a better shot at it next year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:52 PM)

Bryan Murray won't deviate from long-term planning

Marc (Malden, MA)

Getting to the Finals vs losing in the 2nd round is a month shorter offseason. Is it really that surprising that Boston and Vancouver took a month to get going?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:53 PM)

nope, you are correct

steve (colorado)

Pierre, when a team like Colorado takes a quarter of the season to name a captain do you think they were looking for more from players like Johnson, Stastny and Duchene and when they didn't get it they named Hejuk the captain? do you think their lack of leadership is one of the main problems there from Hejuk all the way up to Sherman?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:53 PM)

Let's just say I'm hearing that not all the players are on the same page right now

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Therrien/Bylsma...Pens win Cup. Hanlon/Boudreau....Caps win SE Division. Stephens/Laviolette....Flyers make Cup Finals. Savard/Quenneville...Hawks make West Finals. Payne/Hitchcock.....Blues go 7-1. So obviously now we are going to see a Caps vs. Hurricanes Eastern Conference Final right?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:54 PM)

your logic just made me dizzy, hahaha

Adam (Georgetown)

Why do the Hawks get so much love in power rankings? They are obviously talented and can score in bunches but watch their games and they are just horrible 5on5 and on the PK. There are at least 8 better teams right now.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:55 PM)

Wait until you see my Western Conference quarter-pole Grades tomorrow on espn.com. The Hawks get what I believe is an accurate grade

Judeman (Idaho)

I see players and coaches covering their mouths when talking to eachother during a game. Is there a reason for this other than not wanting people to hear or lip read? Seems a little overkill to me.

Claude Giroux (I forget)

Hey, Pierre. Where am I from again?

Jason (Oceanside, NY)

I just reviewed all the articles and videos on ESPN.com for the quarter of the year awards. Why is it that no one has Henrik Lundqvist within their Vezina candidates, aside from being an honorable mention. The Rangers have the 7th best record in the NHL and have played the fewest games, and Lundqvist has been their best player as he has been for the past few years. How is he not in contention?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

I had Henrik in my Honorable Candidates for Vezina. You didn't read the fine print !

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

I had Henrik in my Honorable Candidates for Vezina. You didn't read the fine print !

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

Sorry for those I didn't get to, more than 170 questions in the queue today ! Talk again next week, cool cats. And remember to rock on.
