Chat with Garry Paskwietz

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:57 PM)

Welcome everyone, let's get started

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think is the Best USC Trojan that is playing in the NFL Right Now?

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:57 PM)

With all due respect to Troy Polamalu, right now I would say it's a toss up between Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing.

Mario NORWALK, CA [via mobile]

If matt barkley leaves who will be the front runner to run SC offense?

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:59 PM)

I don't think there is a front-runner, I could honestly make a case for any of the three guys. Cody Kessler got the vast majority of #2 reps this year so that should serve him well. Max Wittek ran the service team so that was good experience, there is probably more buzz about Wittek than the other two. Scroggins has the strongest arm of the three, he can really throw it.

Mario NORWALK, CA [via mobile]

How many scholorships do we have to play with this year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:00 PM)

The Trojans can sign 15 on signing day in February. They can also bring in some early enrollees for the spring semester, Lane Kiffin said on Sunday that it could be as many as 5-6 players.

Greg (LA)

Who are our best chance for mid year signees?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:02 PM)

Scott Starr and Chad Wheeler are already confirmed. It remains to be seen what will happen with JC running back Kelvin York but he is a mid-year option. Two players the coaches would love to add are JC safety Gerald Bowman and one-time USC verbal Arik Armstead. It's unclear if Armstead will stick with his original plan to enroll early at his school of choice for the spring semester.

usc805 (carpinteria)

Seems like things with Peat are picking up any thought on if he lands at usc or is he a def lock at nebraska? Also what is your surpise pick from an out of state player this year we always seem to get one or two surpise? cant wait to see who it is this year

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:04 PM)

I think Peat would be a real important get for the Trojans. It would be ideal to get two quality tackles in the class, they already have Wheeler coming in early so it would be great to get two from the group of Peat, Banner and Murphy. I don't know if you consider Nelson Agholor a "surprise" but he's one out of state guy who I could see coming out west to play for the Trojans.

Ed (San Diego)

Hi Gary! If we are unable land Peat or Murphy as weak side tackles, do you think Turek or Simmons can play the position?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:05 PM)

I suppose both could do it if needed but the plan is for both to end up at guard. I think the Trojans got the two best guards in the state, great job by the coaches here.

Gordon (Eugene, Oregon)

What happened to that wilson kid(DE or OLB) from the 2011 recruiting class?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:07 PM)

Devante Wilson suffered a knee injury last summer so he didn't enroll at USC in the fall. He is planning to enroll for the spring semester.

Kevin Russell (Thousand Oaks)

Garry, With only 15 scholarships to offer, not counting our current verbal committs, who would you say are the top 5 players we need in order to have a top 5 class?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:09 PM)

I think you have to put Ellis McCarthy as a name on that list. I talked earlier about three of the top tackles (Peat, Banner and Murphy), it would be great to get two of them. I still think Davonte Neal and Kevon Seymour would make a terrific corner duo as well. Of course, if the Trojans can bring Arik Armstead back into the fold it would be huge.

Mario NORWALK, CA [via mobile]

Do you think mark sanchez would of benifited staying @ sc one more year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:10 PM)

It's certainly hard to argue with the success Mark has seen in the NFL but I would have liked to have seen what could have happened in his senior year at USC. It was all there for the taking; a national title run, the Heisman, he had a chance for it all. It was hard to see him pass that up.

Jason (San Diego)

Hey Garry, now that the season is over, what do you think George Farmer's role will be for next year? Do you think he will go back to wide receiver and occupy that third spot on the field? He along with Woods and Lee would be dangerous!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:12 PM)

I think he does go back to receiver on a full-time basis but I think he will be used in the future lining up out of the backfield at times. We've seen Woods do it more and more this year so there's no reason George can't do it. Can you imagine Lee and Woods on the outside with Farmer coming out of the backfield? I'm sure Lane Kiffin can.

usc805 (carpinteria)

with early enrollies having to sign in mid december how many and who do you think we will sign. thanks

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:14 PM)

Lane Kiffin said on Sunday that the number could be either five or six. Scott Starr and Chad Wheeler are already confirmed. Kelvin York is up in the air with his status, he is waiting to talk with the coaches this week. Other potential options are Arik Armstead, Gerald Bowman or Deaysean Rippy.

Rob (Idaho)

Josh Shaw is he still at florida and is he looking to transfer?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:16 PM)

Shaw announced that he is transferring. We've heard that USC is a school he's mentioned he wants to look at but no indication yet if that interest is mutual. USC was a school he seriously considered during the original recruiting process.

Wayne (Alabama )

Do you ever see Ed Oregeron taking another head coaching job?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:17 PM)

I get the sense that he would like another shot. You have to imagine that would happen if the Trojans go on another nice run and he's right in the middle of it with his defensive line and strong recruiting.

Vic (Pullman)

USC recruiting bout to take a hit with Leach?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:18 PM)

I don't know about that but it does bring another strong offensive coach to the conference.

Jim (Iowa )

Which of the freshman on the d line who redshirted will make the most impact next year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:19 PM)

Greg Townsend would be my first thought. He really started to pick it up in the second half of the season and he is so physically impressive. Watch out for Christian Heyward though, he's pretty good too.

Jim (Iowa )

Did Cyrus Hobbi redshirt this year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:20 PM)

Yes, Hobbi redshirted as a center.

Mike (Missouri)

Does USC have a shot with DGB?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:21 PM)

No, something would have to change for the Trojans to have a shot. He hasn't mentioned them lately.

Chris D (Chandler, Az)

So it looks like Perry is as good as gone. What do you think of a 2012 defensive line of Wes Horton, Armond Armstead(fingers crossed), George Uko, and Devon Kennard?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:21 PM)

I would be very content with that. As you say, Armstead is key. Without him, that middle of the line is pretty young.

Chris (Newport Beach, CA)

Gary, I wanted to thank you for the chats, they are very enlightening to us Trojans fans out here. Will they continue after the holidays as signing day approaches? Happy holidays to you and your family. Fight On!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:22 PM)

Thanks. Yes, the chats will continue. Happy Holidays to you and your family as well.

Greg (Tucson)

SC has by far been the most dominant program towards the end of the year. With their offensive balance, given a bowl game, would they likely get pickedover Stanford for an at large BCS bid, and who could stop them? The "D" is better every week..and Barkley is surely the best QB in the Nation over the last 5 weeks...I am remembering an Orange Bowl game a few years back when SC throttled OK, as they were also surging at the end of the season.Barkley WILL BE BACk..he has too much fun ahead of him!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:23 PM)

It certainly has the feel of the early stages of the Carroll era. I think Barkley and Kalil definitely know what's possible next year and they have talked openly about what it would mean to the program.

Chris (Newport Beach, CA)

Are the three freshman LB's ahead of where Cushing and Maualuga where at as freshman?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:25 PM)

I wouldn't say they are ahead of those two. Rey and Cushing were as physically good as it gets, very similar to how Dawson is right now. Pullard and Bailey are more similar to Kaluka Maiava in terms of frame and style but it is certainly working for all of them.

Vince Carella (Moorpark, CA)

How do we stand with Ellis McCarthy and Aziz Shuttu

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:28 PM)

McCarthy recently said that he has USC and Oregon as his top two choices. In the end, I think he stays local and ends up with the Trojans. Not sure on Aziz, USC is one of his final choices along with Cal and Stanford but it's hard to get a real good read on where he will end up.

Matt Barkley (Newport Beach)

What's up Garry! Are there any UCLA commits that the mighty Trojans will go after now that Neuheisal is fired? I would imagine a lot of their commits (or leans) are going to reconsider with teh coaching change. Similar to how they grabbed some of our commits when we transitioned from Pete to Lane.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:30 PM)

Hello Matt. LB Aaron Porter from La Habra is one player that the USC coaches took a look at, he is probably considered the top commit on the current UCLA list so he could get end up getting a longer look.

Aaron (Sacramento)

It looks like the theme of this year's recruiting class will be lineman, who would you say will be the headliner?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:31 PM)

On the defensive line it's Ellis McCarthy. On offense, there are three really good ones in Murphy, Peat and Banner who I think the Trojans have a real shot with.

dk (San Clemente)

Has Barkley indicated when he will make his decision to stay or go?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:31 PM)

No, he said he would "take a couple weeks" after the season to think things through but no indication on when a final decision would be made.

DMAC (Los Angeles)

Considering the impending national Championship game between LSU and Alabama, how well do you think this years SC team would have competed?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:32 PM)

I think they would have competed well. At the end of the year the defense was playing well and the offense could have put up points on anybody.

Al (Los Angeles)

Do you think that Kyle Prater will see more time next season?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:34 PM)

That's a real good question and there's not a clear answer. There are times he certainly seems ready to take that next step but he needs to be more consistent. I would also like to see him do more with the ball in his hands, Kiffin likes receivers who can be a threat to gain good yards after the catch but we haven't seen that from Kyle yet.

Mike (Philadelphia)

With the departure of Marc Tyler, we lose our only +200lb running back. Is there any running back that can emerge as a bruiser (Allen Bradford, LDW) or that is on the recruiting list? I'd like to see USC get more physical in the backfield for short yardage and recruit less finesse. Same at linebacker. I'm also concerned about our position at safety. Starling is 'ok,' McDonald, could go to the NFL; the secondary was giving up too many yards at the third level and not jarring the ball loose or coming up with turnovers. To return back to the national stage, we need premier defensive players to compete with the SEC.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:36 PM)

Kelvin York is the most obvious name but his knee injury has become an issue so it's unclear if he will still end up at USC. That situation will need to resolve itself soon as York is looking to enroll in spring. He took a trip to Washington last week. Buck Allen is also on the roster and he's a pretty good sized back as a true freshman, around 205-210.

Mitch (LA)

Gary,You have one $10,000 chip. Are you putting it on "He Stays" or "He Goes"?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:36 PM)

Stays

Chris D (Chandler, AZ)

Any rumblings of any USC players transferring?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:38 PM)

Kiffin announced that T.J. Bryant would transfer at the end of the spring semester. He will graduate and that will allow him to play elsewhere next fall as a grad student. No word yet on other roster movements but I do think there will be more changes.

Kyle (Iowa)

Should the BCS bowl coalition add the Cotton Bowl?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:39 PM)

I grew up in an era where the Cotton Bowl was one of the major bowls so that's how I always view it. If the BCS is going to add a bowl, I think the Cotton makes a lot of sense.

Carl (Boise, ID)

Garry - what's your thoughts on the Pac-12 (Larry Scott) not allowing USC to claim the Pac-12 South Campions title?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:43 PM)

Haden worked with the Pac-12 office and got the approval to do the t-shirts which said "Pac-12 south champions". Kiffin said Haden tried to get every benefit for the players that they would have received if not for the sanctions. I'm sure the reality of the Pac-12 title game is staring Scott in the face, they could have had a thrilling rematch between USC and Oregon but instead they will get Oregon in a likely blowout against UCLA and a coach who has already been fired.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:44 PM)

Thanks everyone, that will be it for today. Hope to see you here next week.
