Chat with David Newton, Jamie Little

Jamie and David
  (2:47 PM)

Hey, we're in's CHAMPIONS WEEK!!!! Excited to have the party in my own backyard. D Newton just got to town...we thought we'd do a little chatting here. What's on your mind???

Jesse Jones (Huntersville, NC)

Is there any news regarding any possible sale of Red BulL Racing's assets?

Jamie and David
  (2:49 PM)

No news. Apparently there's a price they are looking to get and in this economy, nobody has come to the plate. It's unfortunate. The only assets they have now are cars and a building. Sad for those without jobs. -JL

Jesse Jones (Huntersville, NC)

Does Tony Stewart hungry enough to win another championship in 2012?

Jamie and David
  (2:50 PM)

Sure. If he can keep that aggressive nature that drove him to this year's title he has plenty. The question is how long will it take to develop a chemistry with new crew chief Steve Addington.

Jesse Jones (Huntersville, NC)

Has Brad Keselowski's success undermined KuBu's credibility in his complaints about Penske Racing?

Jamie and David
  (2:54 PM)

Well, having Brad being on the team, with the respect and success he's shown, can't help Kurt's problems. I think it shines a spotlight on Kurt more than ever. -JL

Marc (Toronto)

Any talk of a cup race in Montreal or Toronto any time soon?

Jamie and David
  (2:56 PM)

No talk of Cup going to either location. Would love to see it. I know there is talk about IndyCar going back to Toronto. And of course Nationwide will be back in Montreal. Both awesome venues. -JL

Heather (pennsylvania)

What's the hardest thing about your job and how do you deal with those situations?

Jamie and David
  (3:00 PM)

Dealing with Kurt Busch. Kidding, although that can be difficult at times. I'd say the hardest for me is maintaining a balance doing news and columns. In years past that was all done separately by two people, but in the new world of multi-media we have to do it all. DNI would say having to ask tough questions in tough situations, ON CAMERA, for the world to see. It's one thing to do it off camera, but the world sees everything. Other than that, my job is pretty darn awesome. Sleep deprevation at times and switching time zones EVERY week for me can be difficult but it's part of the gig. I'm thankful.-JL

Teri (Las Vegas)

Hi Jamie I'm a local too! I've taken today and tomorrow off from work to join the Champions Week celebration. So, where do most of the drivers hang out while they're in Vegas?

Jamie and David
  (3:03 PM)

Hi Teri. Nice to see someone from Vegas on here! To be honest, they are scattered all over the city. They have sooo much going on and places to be, basically, if it's on the NASCAR schedule you will see them there. There's quite a few partiers and gamblers in the NASCAR family, so you just may get lucky to see someone out and about. -JL

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Jamie... How do you think Danica will do that she is now racing in nascar full time next year in the nationwide series?

Jamie and David
  (3:05 PM)

I think she'll surprise some people. She certainly has a steep road ahead but she has the right people around her, the right crew chief and the right drivers helping to guide her. I see her finishing top 10 in points in NW. Cup, I have no idea yet as she has never been in a Cup car! -JL

Brian Knotts (Corbett, OR)

Has anyone heard anything recently from Morgan-McClure? Just wondering if they might return to NASCAR at some point.

Jamie and David
  (3:06 PM)

Not in a long while. There were rumblings he would come back last year, but nothing came of it.

Big Jim (New York City)

Jamie, in Michigan once I heard you talk about a Weeper - What is a Weeper?

Mike (Spartanburg)

Who will CC the 22 next year?

Jamie and David
  (3:08 PM)

Who would want to be? Serious. The best guy out there would be Darian Grubb, but handling Stewart isn't nearly the chore that Kurt Busch would be. My guess is it'll be somebody from within Penske. Grubb likely will go back to Hendrick Motorsports because there aren't any top drivers to pair him with this year. Perhaps he's a future replacement for Chad Knaus at HMS.

mike (spartanburg)

Prior to a race, what are the little signs sticking out hood of the car near the windshield?

Jamie and David
  (3:08 PM)

LOL. That is a GREAT question! Weepers are areas of water that come up from under the race track when there's a large amount of rain. They are actually caused from cracks in an older surface race track, where, when it rains, the water seeps up and onto the track. Often times you'll see the track completely dry yet the "weepers" continue. Michigan and Fontana have been the worst in the past. -JL

Cindy (New York City)

Do you think IndyCar will race at Ovals other than IMS again?

Jamie and David
  (3:09 PM)

Those are sponsor signs. I like the Miller Lite cans pouring into Brad Keselowski's car. Makes me want to grab one and have a sip. DN

cory williams (marshall North carolina)

Which busch brother is harder to interview while angry

Jamie and David
  (3:11 PM)

I do believe they will. They are definitely racing at Texas. The schedule is still up in the air. Let's hope there's more oval racing, beyond those 2 tracks. Some of the best racing in the sport. -JL

Jamie and David
  (3:13 PM)

No contest. Kurt. As we've seen, he'll go off on a reporter. It's happened to me, Jamie, Jerry Punch, Joe Menzer of and Jenna Fryer of AP. Kyle typically just walks away when he's angry and doesn't say a thing. But lately even when upset he's hung around and answered a few questions. DHKurt. He's unpredictable. Kyle is simply emotional and you always know what you're getting with him. -JL

Bonnie (Salinas. Ca)

Hi Jamie and David,Enjoyed watching NASCAR Now show; especially on the 'Monday Roundtable' program. Was disappointed no show after Homestead race. Are you going to have a NASCAR 2011season wrap up show? Next year I hope there is a final show after the last race of the season. Thank you.

frank (philly)

Any news on darian? When he was on the 48 box he said family too important to take a cc role. Wonder where his head is now

Jamie and David
  (3:15 PM)

Thanks, first of all, for watching. I agree, I really enjoy the rountable shows. We're not sure about next year's schedule yet. But we'll know before long. I hope we get to do more pit reporter roundtable shows, IMO. -JL

Nothing yet. He told me after the final race he would take two weeks to make a decision. The problem with being a crew chief is there aren't a lot of top teams to go to now. Really none outside of Kurt Busch and Darian is smarter than that, I hope. My bet is he'll wind up at Hendrick Motorsports as an engineer with the promise to move into a crew chief role when one comes open in the future. DN

nascarfun09. (Midwest)

What did you think of McGee's article?

Jay Coker (Atlanta, GA)

Hey Jamie. Just wondering what are some of your favorite tracks to go to, and is there one on the schedule that maybe you don't get to cover a race at that you would like to.

Jamie and David
  (3:20 PM)

Jamie says she hasn't had a chance to read it yet. I read it and understand where he's coming from having been Buschwhacked this year at Charlotte. Not sure I would have gone that strong for two reasons. One, I agree that we'll never know how bad some of the bad boys were from days of yesteryear because they weren't under the microscope they are now. TV cameras weren't there to capture every embarrassing moment. Two, don't we like having bad boys in the sport. While they are tough to deal with they sure keep it interesting. Having said all that, I did turn down a ride around the Phoenix track because Kurt was driving.

Jamie and David
  (3:24 PM)

This is for Jay Coker. Sorry for the unorthodox question and answer, David and I are both answering questions and we realized the questions and answers are popping up out of order. So, Jay...I will say that my favorite track is Talladega. I just love speed and that's the epitome of it. The one place I wish I got to go to and cover the race is Sonoma. I used to cover IndyCar from there and haven't gone back since we began our NASCAR coverage in 2007. -JL

Randy (Cleveland)

How do you think the Busch Brothers will do next year?

Jamie and David
  (3:27 PM)

I believe Kyle will make a run at the title if he learned from this last experience. As Jamie just told me, being if being a champion was based solely on raw talent they'd both win titles year after year. Unfortunately, and this is both of us speaking. they haven't learned there's more to being a champion than turning the wheel. Kurt I believe has a huge uphill struggle. First he has to get a crew chief and develop a trust there that could be difficult. Perhaps this will motivate him, though. He does have the talent. BTW, went through airport security with Kurt today. We both were stopped for an additional search. He behaved quite calmly. DN

Jordan Dodson (North Carolina)

What are your thoughts on the Kurt Busch video?

Jamie and David
  (3:31 PM)

I just have to say, it's unfortunate. Poor Doc. I think he did the right thing in walking away. But, I also understand that when something happens to your car, like a broken transmission, you're irrate and the last thing you want to do is talk about it. But, it goes with the territory. They signed up to race and agreed to speak to the media, and give access. We as media agreed to ask drivers the questions that fans want to know, no matter the circumstance. -JL

cory williams (Marshall NC)

Will dale Jr Win a Race in 2012 also what is this. 2012 nascar preview sponsered by sprint

Jamie and David
  (3:35 PM)

Heck yeah. He's going to win the title. I keep telling Jamie not to take me seriously. This is a good example. Seriously, I do believe he'll win a race. Glad he and Letarte are staying together. Chemistry is key in this sport and they have a good start on something that could be good for both. As for the preview, they are bringing back the old Winston preview where drivers will appear for autograph sessions and other fan related deals. It will begin on January 21 and be held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, I believe. Should be good for fans and the Hall. I'll be there. DN

Ned (SC)

Why did Jermey Punch run away from Kurt Busch like a dog with his tail between his legs?

Jamie and David
  (3:37 PM)

First of all, his name is Doctor Jerry Punch. And nobody ran from anything. He did himself, our crew and Kurt a favor. Have you ever been in Doc's shoes? -JL

Don (Phoenix)

Why does ESPN crucify the Busch Brothers for behaving like NASCAR drivers and heap praise on convicted felons like Haas and Hendrick?

Jamie and David
  (3:39 PM)

Good question. You're right, the Busch Brothers haven't committed a crime, although it feels like verbal assault. I guess the main reason is Haas and Rick Hendrick paid their dues to society and are completely respectful to the sport and media, which earns them praise. But when they committed their individual crimes, if you go back and read, they were called on the carpet. DN

Debbie (Midland, TX)

Has KK moved into shop at HM yet? How's he going to finish next year??

Jamie and David
  (3:41 PM)

They have definitely tested already and I assume that Kenny Francis has wasted no time getting himself situated at his new home of HMS. As for next year, I believe Kasey will be a big threat, as he always has been. He'll make the Chase, win a couple races...that's my prediction. -JL

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Former IndyCar Series Drivers do you think will be NASCAR Champions in the Future Besides Tony Stewart?

Jamie and David
  (3:43 PM)

I don't really see Danica Patrick winning a Cup title. My pick would be Sam Hornish Jr. Once he gets a full Nationwide Series season under his belt _ and I believe he'll contend for the title _ you'll likely see him back in Cup and perhaps this time he'll show us what made him a champion in IndyCar. dn

Thomas (NY)

Has The Busch Brothers Las Vegas family home been converted to a museum like Graceland and is there a momument to The Busch Brothers in Las Vegas? Thank you.

Jamie and David
  (3:45 PM)

Pretty sure in order to have a museum ala "Graceland" you have to be deceased, no? As for Busch Bros monument here in Vegas, last I checked their original home is still modest and normal. Vegas is proud to have those boys, although I do find myself answering a lot of questions about their behavior. -JL

Jamie and David
  (3:46 PM)

Thanks everyone for your last minute questions! This was my first live chat with Mr. Newton and I had a lot of fun. I loved the questions. If you're in Vegas, be sure to come see NASCAR After the Lap at the Hardrock tomorrow. Tickets are available at $20. I promise, it's WELL worth your time and effort! Thanks again! -JL
