Chat with Anthony Robles

LeAnne (Washington)

Anthony, do you play fantasy football?

Anthony Robles
  (2:58 PM)

Actually, I'm really big into football. I love the Raiders. I spoke to the Raiders before the Bears game. Because of the NCAA violations, I couldn't play fantasy football, but now I'm willing to give it a try.

kevin (DC)

what does Jimmy V Week mean to you?

Anthony Robles
  (3:00 PM)

Jimmy V, I remember just listening to his speech on YouTube and getting into professional speaking, he's a guy that I admire. V Week is about remembering what he did and even at the end he was still motivating people to achieve their dreams. That's what I want to take from him, no matter what, no matter what my circumstances are, to give back. Not just worry about himself. Very inspiring. That's what it means to me.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you follow the WWE at all?

Anthony Robles
  (3:01 PM)

Not really, no. I admire what they do. They have to be really athletic. I stick to following real wrestling. When I went to go speak at a school once, I had a kid ask me if I ever wrestled The Rock, thinking I was from the WWE. I respect those guys, but I follow my wrestling.

gregnj (NJ)

What was it like winning the V Award?

Anthony Robles
  (3:02 PM)

It was a huge honor. That right up there with nationals are the two greatest moments of my life. I can remember being backstage getting ready to get the award it was very humbling for me and a huge honor. I will never forget it. I was pretty nervous, almost as much as before my nationals.

Nick (MN)

Do you think your disability has made you a better wrestler?

Anthony Robles
  (3:03 PM)

I think it just made me work harder. When I started wrestling, I struggled so much. I was last in my city. No one knew how to coach me. I had to develop my own style. Because of that, it made me want to win that much more and made me want to work harder. Me missing a leg, I don't see it as a disability, it just made me want it more.

Fred (Denver)

Do you do any work for the V Foundation or for cancer awareness?

Anthony Robles
  (3:04 PM)

Actually not just yet, but we have some stuff planned for the future. I'll be doing a cancer awareness run. I'm actually starting up my own foundation. I have a lot of good things planned right now, keeping busy with everything.

gary (LA)

do you have a most memorable meet?

Anthony Robles
  (3:06 PM)

Actually, I do. Obviously, nationals was a big one. But my junior year, it was one of those matches where nothing was going right. The guy was kicking my butt most of the match. Going into the third, I was down 10-2. I had 2 minutes to come back from it. I looked over at my team and they looked like it was over already. But I came back and beat him 13-12.

Anthony Robles
  (3:06 PM)

That was definitely a memorable one for me. You never know what will happen until the whistle blows and the clock stops.

dave (nj)

what messages do you try to give kids?

Anthony Robles
  (3:08 PM)

The message I give, it's about being unstoppable. That's what I touched on at the ESPYS. We all wrestle, it might not be a physical opponent. There's an obstacle that comes across our path. We always have that choice to be unstoppable, to not let anything hold us back.

Peter (RI)

How was the Raiders game? Get good tickets?

Anthony Robles
  (3:09 PM)

It was awesome. The Raiders flew us in the day before. I spoke to the team and had dinner for the game. I was on the sideline for kickoff. We got to sit in the suit with Fred Bilitnekoff. The Raiders were driving and my family was going nuts and Fred was laughing at how loud we were screaming. They took care of us.

Derrick (LA)

I love YouTube and must watch the V speech 100 times. Do youw atch it often?

Anthony Robles
  (3:10 PM)

Yeah, I watch it quite often. One of the things I took from wrestling, is I always watched the better wrestlers, no matter the weight and tried to take from their style. I believed in order to be the best, you have to study the best. I watch that speech as its one of the best ever given, so I watch it and try to learn from it.

Sam (Boston)

What kind of work do you like to do now?

Anthony Robles
  (3:12 PM)

My main focus right now is professional inspirational speaking. The Washington Speakers Bureau sends me all over the country. I was just signed by Nike. I'm also writing a book right now. They're even talking about a movie deal. We'll see. A lot going on right now!

Mark (Florida)

Biggest wrestling rivalry? Ever get nasty?

Anthony Robles
  (3:13 PM)

For me, my biggest rival was a kid from Minnesota, last name was Sanders. It always got pretty heated in my wrestling matches. Sometimes it would go a little overboard. That's just the nature of the game. We're competing and going hard. For me, I won the last one, so I got the last word!

Anthony Robles
  (3:14 PM)

I appreciate everybody's support. It's been a real blessing. I'm grateful in all of the opportunities. And thanks for taking an interest in what I'm doing now. Keep on the look out for more in the future.
