Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying your week so far. Thanks for joining me for another UGA recruiting live chat. For those on twitter, feel free to follow me @KippLAdams. Lets get to your questions, shall we?
do we know yet if Turene will be here during the spring at UGA?
Unfortunately there is nothing to report on linebacker Kent Turene, a 2011 UGA signee who was flagged by the NCAA Clearinghouse for some online classes he took while at Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. The latest is that the chances of Turene being able to enroll at Georgia are 50/50, and backup plans are currently being pursued for the 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker. If he is not cleared, the former four star prospect will likely have to enroll in a juco program, which could delay his path to a FBS program until December 2012 at the earliest.
Anything new with Shannon Brown and UGA?
No. When he left GMC I think that shut the door on Brown and Georgia, and possibly any FBS program. Very unfortunate turn of events for one of the most talented linebackers in Georgia the past few years.
Do you think the blowout by LSU will make some recruits looking at UGA turn away?
I doubt it Bobby. If anything, Georgia's presence in the SEC Championship game only helped their cause with prospects. Mark Richt can now show them what an impact the 2011 dream team made in getting the program back in the right direction. With the 2012 schedule looking favorable to Georgia, prospects know they might be that difference maker that can get Georgia to the next level on the field.
Is Dillon Lee an EE, if so do you think he switches to UGA or sticks with Bama.
Dillon Lee is an early enrollee, and I think he is definitely taking a closer look at Georgia. The Bulldogs have been on Lee ever since they offered, but he has yet to waver on his commitment. If Lee does visit UGA officially for their Gala banquet this weekend, the Bulldogs have a serious shot.
Do you think Gurley and Marshall end up at the same school?
If Gurley and Marshall are going to end up at the same school, then it would be Clemson or Georgia. I feel both school are serious players for both, but I feel Georgia is the definite leader for Marshall as of now. Gurley has kept things tight over the last two months, but I feel Georgia could have a slight edge in his recruitment as well. Both are very talented running backs who know there is a big opportunity for carries in Athens. We will see on Marshall tomorrow at 2:45 PM EST.
Where do you feel Patterson goes with all the turmoil happening at UT and the firing of there WR coach?
Although Patterson did tell me this morning the departure of Tennessee WR Coach Charlie Baggett did affect him a little, I do not think it had that much of an impact on his decision. He is trying to get to the NFL, so he will look for the best opportunity to get on the field and make an impact. Should be interesting to see if he makes his decision following his official to UGA this weekend, or if he holds off until signing day. UGA and Tennessee both have a shot, and Arkansas is trying to get in as well.
I know Blake Jackson visited OKST this weekend for the OU game. Do you think we stand a chance, would think he might like to play it a spread like Ark or OSU
Following his official to UGA, I felt the Bulldogs had a solid for the receiving tight end from Scottsdale Community College. With his announcement tomorrow at 8PM EST, Jackson has cancelled in-home visits and is trying to decide. I feel it is between Oklahoma State and Georgia, with Oklahoma getting in too late with the 6-4, 235-pound juco prospect. With Marshall and Jackson announcing tomorrow, it could be a huge day for Mark Richt and Georgia.
After watching the game what positions do you feel UGA needs to recruit more of?
I spent much of the day with my family, but from what I did see of the game, Georgia has major needs on both sides of the ball if they want to take that next step and compete for championships. On offense, they need more talent in the backfield and another consistent playmaker at wide receiver. The issues with Isaiah Crowell throughout the season are a distraction and hindered the offensive playcalling, making Georgia a one-dimensional team for much of the 2nd half of the season. Malcolm Mitchell has done well as a freshman, but his and the other wideouts' drops in the first half killed the momentum for Georgia. On defense, they need more bodies along the defensive line that can hold up at the line of scrimmage and control the gaps. The team wore down in the second half, and got gashed by LSU's offensive line and bigger running backs. An inside linebacker or two that can be versatile against the run and pass could help Todd Grantham and Kirk Olivadotti in their packages on second and third down.
Do you think UGA has a real shot at Beaver the CB from Cali? What type of player is he?
What Brandon Beaver has is size and range. A bit of a tweener between free safety and cornerback, he would fit in very well with what Scott Lakatos tries to do in the secondary. As far as his interest in Georgia goes, that is too early to tell. He seemed very excited about the offer, and him immediately planning on giving UGA an official is a good sign. Once he gets on campus, his interest level will be easier to gauge.
Do you think UGA will get Avery Young? If not who will they finish up with on the OL?
Too close to call on Young right now, but Georgia has to like their chances with him at the moment. Each visit Young has placed that school in his top 2-3, but before that Georgia was a mainstay in his top group without ever getting the Under Armour All-American on campus. Georgia has also offered juco OL Mark Beard, and would like to close out the class with those two. If not, more offers will have to go out.
Do we have a shot with Nelson Alghor? spelling prob off but do we have a shot?
I do not see Georgia as a major player with Nelson Agholor. Look for him to end up at Florida in my opinion.
How confident are you that Keith Marshall signs with us? We need him bad!
Clemson has made this a battle, but in the end I still like Georgia's chances to sign the 5-star RB. He has had a great relationship with Mark Richt and Bryan McClendon for almost two years now. That is big to him and his family, and the Bulldogs have done as good a job recruiting him as possible.
Do you think that we will be able to get any commits like Dillon Lee, and Markuss Eligwe? And are those the only two we have a shot at switching their commitments and coming to Georgia?
I think Georgia needs at least one of those two linebackers in this class, and really they are making every effort to get both of them. They could make a late run at Tucker (Ga.) DE Josh Dawson in January, but as of now Eligwe and Lee are the two they have the best chance of switching to Georgia.
Is JHC playing games? I have been hearing about him visiting Florida this week end for a while from Gator fans. I was hoping they were wrong.
I am not aware of him being in Gainesville last weekend, and Josh has never been one to play games. His coach informed me that Clemons will make official visits to Florida next weekend (Dec. 9), Louisville Dec. 16, FSU Jan. 13 and UGA Jan. 20. Alabama and LSU are fighting for his 5th official visit, but as of now, Georgia will get the last chance to impress the No.1 prospect in Georgia. It looks like he will NOT be making his announcement at the Army All-American Bowl, and could wait until signing day to make his decision.
I'm hearing that Keith Marshall and Blake Jackson are UGA bound? How true is this?
Ask me again tomorrow around 8PM and I will have a better answer for you.
Honestly I feel Georgia has a great chance of getting commitments from both tomorrow, but in recruiting anything is possible.
Is there a set time tomorrow when Keith Marshall makes his decision? Any inside details on his decision?
Marshall is set to announce at 2:45 PM. I feel Georgia has long had the edge over Clemson, but the Tigers have worked very hard to make a late push for the No.6 prospect in the country. More and more word out of North Carolina is that Marshall is in no way a done deal to UGA. I still think Georgia has the lead as of now.
Much has been discussed about the level of depth that LSU had on both their lines and how that hurt UGA in the SEC Championship game. How is UGA doing on shoring up their depth on both the offense and defense line?
Georgia has commitments from a pair of highly talented defensive linemen in John Atkins and Johnathan Taylor. Both of the Under Armour All-Americans are 6-3+ & 300-315 and very athletic for their size. Georgia is also in the mix for Henry County DL Dalvin Tomlinson (6-3, 270) and might get an official visit in January. DE commit James Deloach (6-2, 270) is a hard-nosed but raw athlete that could also end up playing defensive line in Athens. On the offensive line, Georgia has commitments from Chester Brown, Greg Pyke and John Theus. Brown (6-5, 320) and Pyke (6-6, 310) both earned offers after camping at Georgia last summer, and they could help out at guard or tackle at Georgia. Theus (6-5, 295) is known as one of the top tackle prospects in the country, and has a VERY good shot at starting immediately at left tackle next year. He is that talented.Georgia is hoping to get commitments from Avery Young and Mark Beard to round out their 2012 OL class. Beard (6-5, 290) is a new name to Georgia fans, but he is an athletic OL out of Coffeyville Community College that handles 4-star DE Ladarius Owens at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star practice back in high school. He plans on giving Georgia an official visit in two weeks and deciding right after. Young (6-6, 275) has been right up there with Theus on Georgia's board since the beginning, and will get him on campus next week for the 1st time.
Are we recruiting Elston very hard? I heard he has been initiating the contact and we arnt recruiting him as hard as some of the other schools.
I have heard the same. He has not heard back from Georgia in some time, and I feel he is further down the board for them than others at the moment. Chaz Elder, Brandon Beaver, Will Redmond and Sheldon Dawson are the top targets at the moment for Georgia.
Who do you expect Blake Jackson to pick on Tuesday?
Tough call. Unless he was blown away during his Oklahoma State official (and he may have), I think he picks Georgia on Tuesday.
What DB out of all that we have on our radar do we have a legitimate chance to land?
I think Georgia has a good chance with Chaz Elder, Will Redmond, Sheldon Dawson and Brandon Beaver. They could easily land any of those four and it would not surprise me in the least. All have serious interest in Georgia, and all plan to take officials to Athens as well.
What's your gut feeling on where Josh Dawson ends up?
Josh likes what Coach Franklin is building and he feels he could make an immediate impact in Nashville. Georgia could make things very interesting over the last month, but as of now I feel he sticks with Vanderbilt.
Do you expect both Memphis kids to get offers this week end?
Neither will be at Georgia this weekend because they are playing in an All-Star game that day, but if both make the trips up the following weekend, I could see both getting committable offers if Georgia likes what they see. Lakatos has already informed Will Redmond that he will be offered during his official.
What players big time players could sign with UGA that may not be on the fans radar's?
I feel that OL Mark Beard is a very intriguing prospect because he is very agile for a 6-5, 290-pound prospect on film. He could be a big help at guard or tackle for a UGA team that graduates three starters on the offensive line.Todd Gurley is another prospect that might be overlooked because of Keith Marshall's elite status, but he could be a better fit as far as SEC style offenses go because of his size (6-1, 215). Gurley has fought off injuries to run for over 2400 yards and 34 touchdowns this year, including a 242 yd, 4 td performance to help Tarboro clinch a 3rd straight state title.
Would you be surprised by any commitments at the Gala?
Care to venture any guesses about commits during the Gala weekend?
Tough to predict commitments from prospects that have not stated any plans on announcing soon, but from the uncommitted targets that have confirmed visit plans (Avery Young, Ukeme Eligwe, Cordarrelle Patterson, Chaz Elder), Patterson is the most likely to make his decision during the visit because he had planned on announcing shortly following his official to Georgia. He could still schedule an official to Arkansas or postpone his decision to signing day as well though, so keep that in mind.
What time will Keith Marshall be making his decision tomorrow?
Keith Marshall is supposed to announce at 2:45 PM EST.
Who do you see as leading for Avery Young. And I saw earlier that we were supposed to be visiting with Blake Jackson today or tomorrow, has that now been cancelled ?
Young long had UGA and Florida among his top two, then he started his official visits to Auburn and Florida and named both as the top schools. I feel Georgia has an outstanding chance of taking the lead for Young after this weekend, but Florida made a great impression on him as well.Blake told me this morning he cancelled in-home visits so he could focus on his decision. It will be either Oklahoma State or Georgia for him tomorrow.
Well that is all for today folks. I enjoyed today's chat and I hope you did as well. See you again in two weeks, when I am sure we will have plenty to talk about following the Gala Banquet. If you cannot wait, feel free to submit questions for my mailbag next week on the DawgNation message board (The Pound) right here: http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/georgia/forums/_/the-pound Have a great week everybody!
