All right. Let's chat. Anybody got a question on any of the four NFC East teams that lost this week?
hey there dan, big fan. Any chance ryan kerrigan wins defensive rookie of the year??
He's in the conversation, as he should be. But as long as Denver's Von Miller doesn't miss any more games with his injury, it appears as though it's his award to lose.
How big of an impact will the loss of Kenny Philips have on the Giants defense this week against Dallas?
I think it's bad, because I really think Phillips is having a great year for them and does a lot of things in run support to help the linebackers. The Cowboys are a multi-dimensional offense with a lot of weapons, and the past two weeks the Giants have struggled against those.
After the Arizona game, I'm ready to declare the Phil Costa experiment a failure. Do you think he's the Cowboys future at Center or do they pick one up out of FA?
I know they like Arkin and Nagy, whom they got in this year's draft, as future cornerstones at the interior line spots. And I think Nagy can play center. That said, given the injuries those guys have had, I would expect those interior offensive line spots to be an offseason focus for Dallas. I don't think Costa is the answer.
Giants seem to play well in Dallas. Think there will be any "hangover" for the strong effort against GB?
No, I don't. The Giants don't really operate like that. And they've been in every one of their games except the Saints one. I think you'll see their best effort Sunday.
Who do you like to win the NFCE this week (in this so-so division, I assume your favoritism may waiver regularly)?
Corgi, I know that you know that I know that you know that predictions come out on Fridays.
How badly do you see Helu's next performance being affected by the suspension of Williams and Davis? How badly does this affect Davis come free aganecy?
It should affect it dramatically, Steve. The loss of Williams is a killer for the line, and the loss of their best receiver in Davis will allow teams to lock in more on the run game. As for Davis in free agency, I believe this will greatly affect the way other teams perceive him and make them less likely to pay him more. I imagine the Redskins are stuck with him for better or worse.
Why do you continue to answer the questions about predictions when there have to be more legit questions coming in?
For fun. Is that okay?
Dan, I don't get this "feel good" loss for the Giants just because they had a chance to beat the Pack. Should the Bucs feel good for coming close last week? What about the Charges having a chance to win in the fourth quarter? Vikings came pretty close too. I just don't see it.
The Giants have lost four in a row. If they want to cling to the fact that they played well and nearly beat an undefeated team, I think we can allow them that. They need to stay positive and confident going into their final four games. You get your motivation wherever you can find it.
Dan, what positions should I take with my first 3 picks in April and how much did Williams and Davis just complicate my off-season?
Well, it's not as though you're going to draft a left tackle in the top five for the second time in three years. You're stuck with Big Trent. And I think you're stuck with Davis too. I still say QB, WR and OL in the first three rounds if I'm Washington.
Lots of talk about the Ballard non-catch in the endzone, but could it be that ruling on the field was upheld because the original call on the field was ruled an incomplete pass and their simply wasn't enough conclusive evidence to overturn the call?
Could be and is because of that. Even the photo isn't "conclusive." Shame on Reese and Coughlin for bringing it up publicly.
I am not a Desean Jackson fan, but Im starting to believe the story around him lately has been more media-driven than anything else. Ron Jaworski and Meril Hoge recently broke down film of him and said they didnt see any plays that he "took off". Now you are hearing that NFL Network was showing a misleading shot of Vince Young talking to Desean, when if you scan back you can see he was clearly talking to Riley Cooper. Im not saying Desean is a model teammate, but I am wondering what your take is on these recent developments.
I think there's some truth to the idea that much of this is piling on. These things can snowball, and that seems to be the case with Jackson, whose behavior Thursday wasn't as bad as it was initially thought or made out to be. That said, he's not blameless. He's done some foolish things that have invited the criticism, and with the team losing all the time, he has to understand that the best thing for him right now is to be above reproach -- i.e. not miss meetings, drop touchdown catches or taunt opposing defensive coordinators.
Dan - What is your take on Jason Garrett now that we have had almost a full year to see him in action. Sunday's game makes me wonder if he will have a job in Dallas come 2012.
There is no question in my mind Garrett will be the Cowboys' coach in 2012. Even if they miss the playoffs, Jerry Jones won't give up on him that quickly. He's young and talented and learning, and that is what it is.
What do you think of Andy Reid's playing of the 'youth' card as an explanation for why his team isn't doing well? I call BS on his claim that they are the 'youngest in the league. Dallas' starters on offense are a year younger on average than the Philly starters on offense.
I haven't looked at the stats. People want to know why it didn't work. They keep asking. That's what Andy has decided his answer will be. There's a fine line between an excuse and a reason, and I don't know which one this is.
Any chance Shanny, still looking for the next Elway, manages to trade up in next year's draft for Luck, the second coming of Elway?
No. The Colts will take Luck.
Skins have any chance against the Pats this week?
I never get the "any chance" questions. This is the NFL. Everyone has a chance every week.
Hey Dan, I didn't see Aaron Rodgers do one discount double check and he threw 4 TD passes. Will he have to return money?
But Tollefson did one after he sacked him!
The Giants-Jets game might be a huge game for both teams come Christmas eve, will home-field advantage play a factor in that game considering they both actually play in that stadium?
I have a job interview tomorrow. Any advice?
Brush your teeth. Wear deodorant. Look em in the eye. And bring the Ballard end zone photo, in case the guy hasn't seen it.
Simple question, what do the Giants have to do to beat Cowboys, which I believe they can and hope they do?
It's going to come down to stopping them, Julius. The Giants can outscore anyone. They just need to find a way to get stops on defense. I don't see how they get Witten, Austin, Bryant and Robinson all covered. Especially with Phillips out.
I heard rumors on the boards from people but then even Dan Patrick suggested Peyton could end up in Dallas. I dismissed this as rumor when I first heard, but now.... Do see any potential in this and why?
No. Because they have Tony Romo.
if the cowboys lose on sunday can they still make the playoffs
Can you buy me lunch today? That Cardinal game was depressing...
Yeah. Meet me at that place with the thing at that time.
Have you seen any progress in Prince's game since his first game against Philly?
You know, he's got great physical talent and knows how to play the position. Teams are going to pick on him because he's a rookie and, like all rookies, he'll need time to get use to the relentlessness of the quality of his opposition at this level. I think it says a lot about a kid that he can step in and be a viable player at cornerback in the NFL in his first year. I think he's played fine and has made (and will continue to make) some mistakes. The Giants are very good at knowing how to work in a rookie without putting too much on him. He's in a good spot. I'd expect him to be more of a consistent factor next year.
Why do you think the Dallas Cowboys can not take that next step to become one of the elite teams this year? They always almost get there then they blow it.
Well, I think they CAN. They've had some injuries, as everyone has, and they haven't really been able to get in sync. If I were a Cowboys fan, I'd like to see the defense lock in for three or four game the way it did in September. That more than anything is to blame for the inconsistency, I think.
Fewell claims he wanted to bring pressure and sack Rodgers yet at some key times in the game only brought a 3 man rush... At some point he has to put some faith in his secondary to cover for 5 secs and bring some heat on these QBs right?
No, they're not going to do it. Their weakness is coverage, and they know it. They're not going to make that even more weak by bringing guys from the back end to blitz. The Giants' defense is based on the idea that the line will get enough pressure. When it does, they're good. When it doesn't, they're in trouble. It's not going to change.
Vick has shown flash and has shown to be fragile. Alot of money is invested in him. Can the eagles really move forward with him as their guy.
I think they're at the point where 2012 becomes a make-or-break year for everyone. Assuming Reid comes back (which I do), they'll have to do something special next year or they can justify blowing it all up. That includes Vick, since they'll be able to get out from under his deal after 2012 without too much pain if they want to. I think the Eagles have to operate as if 2012 is their last year on earth.
there's been some talk about my coach getting the ax if we don't get into the playoffs, which we will and will make some noise. but we love the man and will go to battle for him all day. you think if we screw up and don't make the playoffs coach is gone?
To answer this and many other questions: I truly believe the same four men who are head coaches in the NFC East right now will be head coaches in the NFC East in 2012.
If Giants lose this Sunday, they can still win the division by winning out and Dallas losing to Philly in Week 16.
Shouldn't the Eagles just send Desean home for the last month of the season? I can't see them winning any games with him infecting the locker room, and it's pretty clear the relationship is beyond repair and he won't be a Bird in 2012 anyways
No. The Eagles are going to bring back pretty much this same group next year. There is value in a strong finish for them.
Has felix jones lost his job for good?
Oh yeah. He'd need a DeMarco Murray injury to get that job back. He's a backup.
Do you feel Matt Barkley or RG3 is the QB the Skins want?
I'd be speculating. I have no insight right now into what Shanahan thinks of either guy. I think Barkley is the better NFL quarterback prospect, but I could make a case for Griffin as a better fit in the Shanahan "system."
DAN! Assuming the Eagles have a good draft selection this year (top 10) do you see them drafting a QB in the 1st round?? Maybe RG3?
That wouldn't surprise me. It's obviously an important position at which to be deep. It's obviously a favorite position of Reid's. And if you have a top 10 pick and a potential franchise QB is there, that's a case where I'd favor the value pick over the need pick every time.
Dan, how did Davis and Williams not get suspended for their second violation? My understanding was second violation for recreational drugs was 4 games.....3rd should be a full year.
What happened is this: They were each already in the program for violations in previous years. They were each part of a group of 11 guys who tested positive during the 30-day "grace period" that followed the end of the lockout. And they have each tested positive more than once since the end of the grace period. The other nine guys who tested positive during the grace period and haven't since are not being punished. Williams and Davis are. And the league was going to suspend them for a year, but the union was able to negotiate it down to four games somehow. Not sure how. I think it had something to do with the timing of the suspensions vis-a-vis the grace period and maybe some gray area on that.
We here so much QB talk in the upcoming draft. Besides QB who do you think is the best skill player available? Any way for the Skins to pull of a Cincy?
I would pick Trent Richardson, the Alabama running back, as the best non-QB offensive player in the draft. Justin Blackmon as the receiver. Could the Skins take Blackmon in the first and try and find their Andy Dalton in the second? I don't see it this year. There's going to be too much scrambling for the top QBs in the first round to expect one of them to last into the second. This year, demand will exceed supply.
Hey Dan, did you hear the refs made a couple questionable calls in the Packers game?
I think somebody sent me a photo, but I'm not sure.
Is Manningham on his way out next year? Do you believe the rumours that Smith wants to go back to the G-men?
I do believe that last thing, yes. I do not know if the feeling is mutual. As for Manningham, if he's healthy, I believe they'd like to keep him. But if not, adios.
Is Boothe a better center than Baas? The Giants seem to run the ball better with him at center.
They did have their best run-blocking game of the year Sunday. But I thought they did all right with it the week before too -- at least relative to what they'd been doing in the run-blocking, which was nothing. I don't think Boothe is necessarily better than Baas, but I think in a good matchup like Sunday's (Packers missing two starting inside LBs), the Giants are able to take advantage of having on their bench a guy who's played plenty of games with the other guys around him.
Dan, was Fiammetta's absence really as big of a loss as it has seemed?
Stat I saw today says Murray has run for 4.6 more yards per carry when Fiammetta has played than when he hasn't. Something like 8.1 to 3.5. Pretty significant.
More important for the 'Skins, a LG or a RT?
I'd always prefer to draft the tackle. Also, Lichtensteiger was playing great before his injury, so if he comes back they're OK there.
Do the Giants have the best recieving corp in the division right now? Nicks, Manningham (when healthy), Cruz, Ballard and even Hynoski, Jacobs and Bradshaw have been getting good catches out of the backfield.
Close between them and Dallas when everyone's healthy. I'll take the Giants' wideouts and Dallas' tight end.
Lichtensteiger is a UFA at the end of the season
Sure, but you know. Coming off injury, maybe they get him cheap, right? Assuming he's healthy enough to play.
Bears eat beets.
I just learned that while reading a book to my five year old last night. Beets have plenty of iron, I think.
HOW ABOUT A GIANTS DRAFT QUESTION: where do they go in 2012 in the first couple of rounds?
The Giants will always take the highest player on their board regardless of position.
Also, while many would say that Dez Bryant is perhaps more talented, isnt that overshadowed by Nicks ability to stay healthier?
Well, Nicks hasn't been the picture of health. The reason I like Nicks better than Bryant is the way he works at his craft. He's a film room rat. He studies his own routes and those of the other receivers. He's obsessive about technique. He locates the ball in traffic before the defender does. He's the total wide receiver package. Bryant is fantastic in his own right, and a physical specimen who can get by on talent alone. I haven't seen evidence that he's as determined to hone his talent as is Nicks, who has just as much.
Any excitement about Don Bosco Prep out of Ramsey, NJ being National Champions in HS football? They beat down Ridgewood this year.
They did. It was a big deal around here that Ridgewood was only down 14 at the half. That's like a victory, apparently. The Bosco team is the real deal.
How about that Perry Riley? He looks like he's solidified his starting spot for next season. Great to see a young guy with a lot of energy and some nice instincts out there.
Yeah, and next to London Fletcher is a pretty good spot for a guy like that who wants to learn and do all he can to get better. Lots to like about what's happened on the Redskins' defense this year.
Thoughts on how Philly fares in Miami with Vick back?
Gonna be tough. Since the 0-7 start, Miami's playing as well as anyone. Especially on defense.
I saw the replay of the cowboys timeout and saw that the Special teams coach told them to take the timeout. To much heat on the HC or does he deserve it?
When you're the head coach, you've got to take all the heat.
Dan, It's really important someone explain tiebreakers for the draft order to me. Who will draft first, Redskins or Eagles?
As of yesterday, the Redskins would have picked 5th and the Eagles 8th. Tiebreaker in draft order is relative strength of schedule. Teams that played the weaker schedules get the higher picks.
Graz...can you get me off the hook? For old time's sake?
Very nice. Though I don't think Andy has to fear a "Can't do it, Sally," from Tom Hagen or a garrotte from the back seat.
Does Ronnie Brown stay in Philly after this year? If not, do the Eagles need to go after a RB in the draft. Seems like alot of chips in the Lesean basket.
They drafted Dion Lewis last year, and they like him. Plus, they seem to like to throw a lot...
Dez hasn't even had a training camp in his career yet (hurt, lockout), give him some time before judging?
No question. People are rushing to judgment too quickly on Dez. My analysis had more to do with what I like about Nicks. I think very highly of both players.
Pineapple - What NFC East team's kicker would you most want to have kicking a long range FG with the game on the line? Which would you least like to have?
Giants are six spots out of pineapple territory right now, my friend, so go easy there. Sunday's result notwithstanding, I'll say Bailey and Henery.
dan please post 1 of my questions!!!!!
Dan, is your disdain for Giants whiners.. i mean fans as good as advertised? or is it all in their heads?
It is all in their heads. I have nothing but love for my readers, even though I like to give each fan base a hard time when warranted. All in good fun.
What % do you give each team to win the East this year (technically all still alive, right)?
Cowboys 60 percent, Giants 35 percent, Eagles 3 percent, Redskins 1 percent.
What do the giants chances look like if they lose Sunday but sweep the last 3 games?
Very good. Though they would need Dallas to lose one more.
What do you see as the bigger mismatch; Giants O vs Cowboys D or Cowboys O vs Giants D?
Uh... the latter. But I expect lots of points both ways.
And 1% margin of error?
Yeah, you know, or for rounding up.
Yeah, you know, or for rounding up.
Imagine what the Giants could have done, with a running game this year
//imagines//takes next question
what is dallas missing defensively to become a great defense ? very good pass rush they have it they have some good pieces in secondary and they have a promising talent in sean lee
Yeah, probably some depth on the line and at linebacker. They seem to suffer too much when one or two guys gets hurt.
So you gave 99% chance for one of the 4 teams to win the NFC East. Who gets the other 1% - LSU, Alabama, OK State or Stanford?
LSU, no question. Everyone else is playing for second place in that game.
Dan i know the Giants D cant cover but terrence newman, orlando scandrick and gerald sensabaugh? the cowboys secondary is just as awful as the G Men's is
I did say I expected them to score a lot of points. But I had to pick one.
Graz - Do you see Washington making a play for Peyton Manning should he become available or do you think he would retire rather than play anywhere else?
I find the Manning to Washington stuff farfetched. Doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, just that I doubt it.
What in the world is a pineapple? you mentioned it a few posts ago.
Earlier this year, when the Giants were in the Top 10 in Power Rankings, I wrote something to the effect of, "If the Giants are one of the 10 best teams in this league, then I'm a pineapple." It upset some people, made some others laugh. And some are holding me to it. If they end up a top-10 team, I believe I am required to change my avatar to a pineapple. Which I'd be happy to do, though it does not appear as though I am in any danger of having to.
Dan, lets say for some reason Eagles fire Reid. Where does he likey end up, and who would replace him? Hed prob go to jacksonville or san diego, maybe?
I'd bet on San Diego. But he's not getting fired.
There seems to be some type of other-wordly vortex surrounding Arizona that only seems to affect the Dallas Cowboys. Weird huh?
Cards beat the Eagles in Philly, and the Giants needed a late miracle or two to win in AZ. I'd say the Cards have been a tough team to play this year, despite their record.
Does Andy need to fire Juan Castillo in order to save his job? What about OC - should he fire either of them, even if his job is safe, regardless?
I don't know that it's as cut-and-dried as "Juan goes or you go, Andy." But I don't see Castillo back in the same role next year. Can't imagine how they could sell that to their players, let alone their fans.
About my Arizona/other-wordly comment, I was referring more to the recent history of the bizarre Dallas-Arizona finishes
Ah. OK. Sorry.
Your division tie breaker playoff scenario is very helpful. Can you share the wild card scenarios for the Gmen and Cowboys? Do they hold tie breakers over any of the other teams?
Still so messy. Haven't looked at it as thoroughly. But I promise I will look into it and see if I can turn it into a manageable post.
Two questions posted?! Thanks, Danny Boy - you are just a swell guy, aren't ya!
I'm an AWESOME guy.
im realizing i have to much on my plate. after this season im looking for a new offensive coordinator. any suggestions?
Sure. I'll try it.
Dan do you believe that the G Men would have had more success this year if they relied on Eli as much as the packers do on rodgers or the saints do on brees and even further abandoned the running game?
I think they've relied on Eli plenty. They definitely still seem to begin games determined to run the ball, but I think to give up sooner and ask more of Eli than they have so far would be a mistake. I wouldn't change anything about the year he's having if I were them.
Dan what do you think about the new NHL 4 conference realignment?
Dan, no matter who skins draft at QB. Grossman is the 2012 opening day starter. Agree or disagree?
I think it's possible, but I will disagree.
If I see you in Ridgewood can I say "yo"
I definitely hope you would.
That's all, folks. I enjoyed it as I always do, and I will be back next week for more. Enjoy the rest of your day.
