Hi everyone. Let's get this thing started.
Hey, media, screw you. Quit smearing the Lions.
Yes, that's the problem.
Does it look like the Packers will have both Bishop and Hawk back for Sunday?
Bishop tweeted last week that he would be back for the Raiders. Obviously that is subject to his progress, which McCarthy said he would update us on Wednesday.
What do you see as far as performance from Barber untill Forte returns?
He's been a good, hard runner in his career and also a good receiver. But he's not a big-run threat anymore, if he ever was. The Bears will most miss the chance that Forte had to break a 30-yard run or an 80-yard screen pass for a score.
I now you cant always tell from sideline demeanor, but after watching the lions commit a 3rd personal foul, Schwartz seemed like he could care less. Unlike Payton who you could see ripping his player for a dumb penalty when they already had the game in hand. At what point do you hold the coach accountable for the lack of discipline of a team?
He should be ultimately accountable. In this case, I think he was trying to maintain his own composure rather than go bonkers and escalate the situation on the sideline. By all accounts, Schwartz got after those guys in private.
Have the Packers accepted that their defence gives up big plays and that in order to win they must outscore their opponent, or do they have expectations that they can improve the defence between now and the playoffs?
I'm sure they'll keep working at it, but as Tom Silverstein wrote today in the J-S, after 12 games it kind of is what it is. They've won 12 games doing it this way so far.
Did Aromashodu assert himself as a legit future WR for the Vikings with his game against the Broncos, or was that a flash performance by an up-and-down, inconsistent receiver?
Maybe both? He's going to get an extended look here at the end of the season. He's one of those players who we always think should play more, dating back to his time in Chicago.
What are you feelings on the recent development in the Suh car accident? Two women are now claiming they were injured and Suh lied about it. It feels like a case of people who want to mooch off of his fame and fortune, but Suh has acquired such a reputation that it's hard to be sure.
It's hard to know for sure. But the fact that the police quickly amended their report suggests there is some merit to the claims of the two women.
Who, if anyone, has the best chance of beating the Packers down the stretch?
I really truly believe the Packers are the best candidates to beat the Packers. Obviously they could lose to anyone on any given day. But the likeliest scenario is some some self-inflicted mistakes that cost a game, or perhaps a decision to rest starters.
Is Clay Matthews still playing on his rookie contract or has he signed a new contract since being drafted?
Still on his rookie deal. Something to consider this offseason, for sure.
I love Nick Collins and hope he makes a full recovery, but I think Charlie Peprah has been playing lights out, maybe even the Packers Defensive MVP, thoughts?
I wouldn't go there -- based on style points alone on the Giants' first TD Sunday. I think he missed two chances to tackle a tight end and got juked both times.
Kevin, I've seen several Viking fans that say they would like the Vikings to draft OT Matt Kalil from USC in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. Wouldn't a playmaking WR (perhaps Justin Blackmon) make more sense with this pick? Our family has long believed that you can draft good offensive linemen in the middle oart of the draft. What's wrong with our way of thinking?
You can't draft a good left tackle in the middle of the draft. I would line up with those who want to see Kalil signed. Taking a receiver No. 2 overall is rare, and unless Blackmon is the next Calvin Johnson, I don't think anyone will do it.
Everyone is bagging on Martz, but wasn't he right all along?Hanie is not an NFL QB. He has been asking for a backup for two years. Oops.
I think that's a fair point and one I was talking to someone about today. Martz is notoriously tough on backup quarterbacks, but it's been clear for a while that he didn't totally buy into Hanie at the start. It's also possible he saw Hanie as a bad fit for his offense more than just a bad quarterback.
Come on Kev... Ponder threw for 381 yds and 3 TDs in his 6th NFL start against a Defense that had been playing pretty darn well going into the game. Yes, he made two terrible decisions. He's a rookie! Remember the rookie years P. Manning and Aikman had? Did you expect the guy to be Aaron Rodgers out there?
That's definitely one side of the argument. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt, but I also see where some people would be concerned. Not every quarterback takes the step beyond making rokie mistakes.
why are the bears sticking with Hanie ?
Because their options are a rookie and a guy who was coaching in high school a few weeks ago.
If you were to hypothetically buy a share of Packer stock, would you need to put a disclaimer at the end of any article?
No. I would just refer to myself as a "source within the Packers organization."
Any word on why Pettigrew wasn't ejected? I thought contacting an official was an automatic disqualification, just like throwing a punch or kicking?
It isn't automatic. We found that out with the Charles Woodson punch in Week 1.
How happy are Bears fans to know that Roy Williams and Marion Barber two players discarded by the Cowboys are the focal point of there offense?
Don't think it was their plan when the season started.
With Fred Pagac being relieved of some of his duties, will Mike Singletary become the defensive coordinator for the Vikings next year? What changes would their scheme see with him?
That's a decent effort at connecting the dots, but it would just be guesswork for all of us. I don't think we would see major changes in the scheme the Vikings run -- it's Frazier's scheme. I'm guessing Frazier and Singeltary's friendship would create a clearer vision for what they want to accomplish.
So, I would imagine that after the first offensive pass interference penalty, Burleson was thinking, "Hmm. Gotta be sneakier." And after the third one he was thinking "&^%$#%^
Ha. ... I think reasonable people can debate whether all three of those calls deserved to be made. But once the first one gets called, a veteran receiver has to make sure he doesn't give the official another opportunity.
Who would throw more interceptions - Caleb Hanie or Cutler with a cast on his hand?
Could the Vikings coming into town be a trap game for the Lions, with Kevin Smith and a good chunk of the secondary and D-line out? What if Pettigrew, Logan, and Young are all sitting?
I don't think so. Check out the Vikings' secondary and tell me how it can match up with Stafford, Johnson, Burleson, Scheffler, etc.
Kevin, do you think Adrian Peterson returns to the Vikings starting lineup on Sunday?
I don't think it's a done deal by any means. Often a player who is returning the following week will start the practice process the previous Friday. Peterson did not. We'll see, though.
Lion's fan here. Lions appear to have the talent to compete with the top teams, but their biggest problem, to me, appears to be between the ears. I would rather have these guys sit a game and miss the playoffs than letting this kind od actions continue. What's your view?
I agree with the part about sitting. They can beat the Vikings without Suh, Pettigrew, Young and Logan. And in reality, if they don't get this thing straightened out, they're probably not going to make the playoffs, anyway.
Kevin, the world has to know when will you be relocating to Chicago to cover the upcoming arrival of the man on the golden tractor
No way the Packers will rest starters the last two games. They're at home. Against division rivals. Even if those games don't matter for playoff seeding, they matter for pride. I simply can't see the team just conceding those games. Maybe if they were away against non-rival opponents. But not the Lions and Bears, and not at Lambeau Field.
I could make passionate arguments about what I think McCarthy will do on both sides of the spectrum. I really, really don't know. Do you risk Rodgers against, say, the Lions in Week 17?
Are the Bears seriously considering extending Martz's contract considering he has never been able to adapt his offense to the talents of the players on the team. Examples Rams after Vermeil, Lions and 49'ers
He has some eccentricities, for sure, but I do think he had arrived at a pretty good place with Cutler in the weeks leading up to the injury. I wouldn't assume that the next OC would be an improvement.
Have you heard any updates on Charles Woodson and his progress after the concussion he sustained last weekend?
McCarthy seemed relatively optimistic that Woodson will pass the necessary tests and play this week. We'll see.
I was intrigued on Sunday by the Packer's decision for Cobb to take a knee on the last kick-off. I guess it was the first time this season where I saw game management a part of the return game in such a critical moment. Give Cobb a chance? Leave as much time on the clock? Not to mention what the Giants were thinking etc...What were your thoughts as you watched it?
I was a little surprised but on reflection, I think it was smart. The Packers' only priority then should have been to get the ball in Rodgers' hands with the maximum amount of time. And, of course, it worked.
Life-long Lions Fan (explains my cynical view on life); I am stunned and embarrassed by the Lions on field behavior and am curious- can a coach be fined by the league for his players on-field transgressions? It seems Schwartz has a history of allowing players to be overly 'chippy.' Not just here but in Tenn.
The coaches can't, but the franchise can be fined if the total amount of applicable fines for players hits $100,000 or more after appeals are heard. The Lions are in line this season for at least a $50,000 fine as a result.
Any idea how that rookie (Enderle) has looked in practice, or how high the coaching staff is on him?
The signing of Josh McCown is probably all you need to know in that regard.
your percentage odds on the Vikings allowing a td shouldnt have included also winning the game. The goal was to get into overtime, and so I think the odds were better for allowing a td
It's a fair point. And I also should have looked at the odds if they had waited to allow the TD when the ball was at the 4.
Any updates on Fairly's foot injury?
Sounds like it was pretty sore. Might be tough for him to play this week.
Chances Forte is playing someplace other than Chicago next year? I think it's a certainty, but what's your opinion?
I think there is little chance. The Bears can use the franchise tag on him and would be silly not to.
Wait, this blog is moving too fast for me. I think another question/answer just got by me. CAN WE PLEASE SLOW THINGS DOWN A BIT???
Ouch. I was surprised to hear Frazier speak so bluntly about your play this year. He was right, though.
Are we in the discussion for the best receiving core of all time?
Let's just start with the best this season, ok?
Wasn't Todd Bouman available for the Bears?
I would if Chad Hutchinson would take their call....
What's the latest news on the Vikings' stadium front?
They are having a hearing today, actually, at the state legislature to discuss funding options. They've got a better chance this year than they ever had before. Put it that way.
Will Frazier still be coaching the Vikings next season?
I would be stunned if he weren't. The Wilfs want to give him a fair shot.
Can't you see McCarthy sitting down Rodgers in the 4th to let Flynn get a little audition in if the Packers lock up the 1 seed? I am also very OK with shutting down banged up players (STARKS) to get ready for the postseason.
The Starks thing would make sense. I can see McCarthy protecting Rodgers, but I can also see him saying that healthy players play and we push on, etc., etc. I really don't have a read on it.
If I remember rightly, McCarthy had the #5 wild card spot sown up in '09 season, and he still played his starters in a meaningless game against Arizona. So my question is what make's you think he will change his approach to any meaningless games they have this year??
And in 2007, I think he rested guys, if I remember right.
do you miss Lost?
Every Wednesday night.
Who would you rate as a better QB, Stafford or Cutler?
Both have had good years, but I think Cutler was playing awfully well in the month or so before his injury.
Scenario: Vikings dont get approval for a new stadium and the Vikings are not allowed to move to L.A. What happens then?
I'm not sure what scenario they would not be allowed to move to LA. The NFL doesn't approve? If that's the case, I guess they would have no choice but to sign a short-term lease extension at the Metrodome.
Hi Kevin, was at the Bears game on Sunday and I now firmly believe that they will knock themselves out of the playoffs. The defense just isn't there to carry the offense like they did in 06. Are you convinced that the Bears are no longer a playoff contender?
No I think they have a decent chance. There are two spots that someone is going to have to take. Right now, no one in the NFC is really grabbing them. The stakes are getting lower and lower each week.
REST THE STARTERS!!!? Come on people, I and most of our 2nd stringers could be starting on other teams around the NFL. Put us in and you will still have a chance at an undefeated season. Right?
Well, uh, that would make it a true team effort, right?
After a monster game against the Lions, James Jones was all but inactive for the Giants. By design, or just one of those things?
The season has ebbed and flowed for him. Rodgers has demonstrated he'll throw to the guys who are open, part of which depends on the defense. Jones has gotten his and will get his again....
Over/Under Aaron Rodgers' TD total at the end of the regular season: 45.
He's at 37 right now, an average of a little over 3 a game. So if he stays on average, which I think he will, it'll be the over.
People in Green Bay don't think their second stringers are actually better then most other teams, right? I know they are pretty high on themselves, but that is pretty unsufferable...
That was mostly a Flynn thing. And I'm not sure if he's better than most team's starters, but I bet he would perform better than most team's backups.
Kevin, real question here. Do you sometimes troll your own blog for fun?
No. I wouldn't consider that a good time.
It looked like Forte might have gotten his plant foot stuck in the new sod in soldier field. What's the deal with that? Why are they so against field turf?
I didn't see where he was on the field, but the Bears are convinced that FieldTurf is less safe. The point has always been that good grass is better than FieldTurf, but bad grass is worse. (No drug jokes, please.)
Let's say the Vikings end up with the third pick in the draft, and Kalil and Luck are the first two gone. Would you roll with Blackmon there or Morris Claiborne the shutdown corner from the future BCS Champs?
Just based on positions, and not any evaluation of the actual players, I would say the corner.
Kevin, any talk of Musgrave getting the boot at season's end? Some of his packages are down right boggling.
There has not been. And I don't think it would be wise to start a revolving door of coordinators when you're trying to develop a young quarterback.
What are the chances Rodgers doesn't win MVP?
Less than 10 percent.
So you don't think the 49ers defense can shut down the Packers, I understand why? So, besides "the packers", can any other NFC team possibly make the superbowl?
I didn't say that about the 49ers. I do think they are a team that, at the very least, is built to compete at Lambeau Field in January.
Kevin - isnt there anyone potentially on the horizon in Minnesota that could buy the Vikings and keep playing them in the Metrtodome and/or offer stock like the Packers?
The Packers are the only team that can offer stock. They're grandfathered into the current NFL rules. As for someone in Minnesota, Glen Taylor has only wanted to buy the team at a steep stadium-related discount. I don't see it being sold to someone in Minnesota if the team doesn't get a stadium.
Do you think Schwartz is part of the problem in Detroit's emotional outburst penalties? Here is a guy that overly celebrates, lost his cool with Harbaugh and obviously cant keep his own emotions in check. How can you then realistically come down on your team for the same thing?
It's a fair question. Schwartz could say that none of the things he's done has hurt the team on the field in terms of a penalty. But the old, "do what I say, not what I do," technique doesn't work.
Ponder had a great game besides the two picks; besides Harvin he's got no one to throw to besides Rudolph. And Rudolph off the field during red zone packages? that's crazystupid.
Yeah, I don't know if there is a good explanation there.
I don't see how offering "stock" sales should only be a Packer thing. If people want to donate money to a team of there choice, in the form of these "stocks" why doesn't the NFL allow it? it would sure put the NFL in good standings with tax payers.
Because the Packers are the only team that are allowed to be owned by the public. It's a specific arrangement designed to keep the smallest-market pro franchise afloat.
Kevin, Vikes play at DT has been very leaky of late. Should they consider a DT run stopper at #1 or #2 in the draft.
Probably not if they have the No. 2 or No. 3 pick, and I wouldn't consider that among their top 2-3 needs. OT, CB, S, and MLB are all higher.
In terms of Super Bowl rematches for XLVI, would you rather see a rematch of XXXI (Packers vs Patriots) or XXXII (Packers vs Broncos)?
Rodgers vs. Tebow?????? Could the world handle that?
OK, a few more here.
Have you tried JJ Abrams "Person of Interest" yet?
I have not, but it has the magic name, that's for sure. I'm kind of enjoying not being locked into a TV show.
Do the vikes trade back in the draft or trade Jared Allen to get more picks?
Much better chance of the former than the latter.
Greenway leads the Vikes in tackles but it seems like most of his tackles are after 3 to 8 yard gains. He rarely makes TFL. Is he overrated? I think so.
Agreed. I don't think he's overrated because I don't think anyone suggests he's one of the best linebackers in the game. He's a serviceable starter and a good teammate.
OK everyone. Thanks so much. Chat with you next week.
