What are Harvard's chances to win the rest of the season?
Harvard will be favored to win the rest of its games. But there are still potholes. Beating Saint Joe's at home will now be a tough chore. The Ivy road games at Princeton, Penn and Yale will all be struggles. Harvard still has to win the Ivy to get the bid. I don't see a scenario where Harvard loses the Ivy this year and gets an at-large. Whoever would beat Harvard for the title simply won't have a resume like Princeton did a year ago.
Andy, the other night we pulled a close out against FAU. Some may call that a questionable game, being FAU is a "weaker" team, but I think of it another way....Those types of games happen to the best of teams, but if you are a legit "good" team, you find a way to win, and that's what we did; we found a way to win down the stretch - in years past, we'd have lost that game. How good can this MS-State team be? What's their ceiling? Thanks Andy.
The ceiling is high. The freshmen guards have done well but are going to be integrated even more into the offense. And I'm sure Rick Stansbury is still waiting for that one breakout game from Renardo Sidney. If it happens on the same night that Arnett Moultrie has a double-double then the Bulldogs will be quite a force.
Is Mike Scott (UVA) an ACC Player of the Year contender?
Is he a contender? Yes. But he would have to have a dominating conference season. Carolina and Duke will have plenty of candidates. But Scott is probably the only non Duke-UNC player that has a shot.
Is the Xavier-Cinncinati suspensions enough?
If it were up to me -- and it isn't nor would it ever be -- I would have gone longer for Gates and at least given Tu two games to match Mark Lyons.
Does Syracuse deserve the #1 spot?
For this week -- yes. Are the Orange the best team in the country? No.
Thanks for all the Billiken coverage this season. If they can beat New Mexico at The Pit on New Year's Eve, they could have a really special season. Do you see them as the top challenger to Xavier in the A10?
Yes. It should be a two-team race. Although Temple fans will likely jump in here saying the Owls will make it a three-team chase.
Hello Andy, why does KU get virtually no credit for their victory over the number 2 team in the country? KU's bench outscored OSU's by 20 points, It is a team game right? KU beats Long Beach and OSU and moves up one spot while Missou beats Navy and moves up three.
I wouldn't sweat KU's movement in the polls versus Missouri. KU has played a tougher schedule than Missouri but the Tigers have been more consistent and more dominant. They'll play twice in the Big 12 to settle everything.
Where do you see the Hoosiers finishing in the Big Ten?
At this point the Hoosiers have to be considered a contender for the top five. But I'm still sticking to my prediction of Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan as the top four. Then you could probably put in some order Illinois, Indiana and Purdue. And that will likely be the seven who represent the Big Ten in the NCAA tournament.
Andy, is Jordan Taylor's surgically reapaired ankle bothering him? He seems a little off this season.
Well, he just hit the winning shot to win at Milwaukee. So I'm not convinced he's off.
Andy,Am trying to keep the faith that the Gophers can still eke out a NCAA bid without the services of Trevor Mbakwe, even though it'll be an uphill battle. Can you give me a percentage. ... percentage chance the Gophers get to 9-9 in the B1G and at least get into the at-large conversation heading into Championship Week.
The Gophers have played very well without Mbakwe, but the Big Ten will likely eat up this frontcourt. So I have them finishing eighth or ninth.
Who is your final four teams? I have Kentucky, Ohio State, North Carolina and Syracuse right now
I had Kentucky, Ohio State, UNC and Xavier. Not changing yet.
Do you think people are ignorant about Syracuse's talent? They lost 1 starter, top 10 class coming in and haven't lost. Not saying they are the best but can't say they're not.
The Orange are one of the best teams in the country.
How excited should we be in Hoosierland about this IU squad? Not just this year, but next year as well when "The Movement" hits Bloomington.
Hard not to be excited if you're a Hoosier fan. The expectation should be for this squad to compete for an NCAA berth, which has to be a year ahead of schedule.
Who are you picking between Gonzaga and 'Zona tomorrow?
Gonzaga in Seattle.
My Q is...What is your favorite type of cookie?
Off cookies for nearly a year. But if I partake I'd say Milanos.
What does NC State have to do to get into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Sendek era?
Winning Saturday against Syracuse would help - a lot. Knocking off Duke and/or UNC one time, too.
What cues can NC State take away from the Indiana-Kentucky game as it tries to pull an upset of its own?
The atmosphere at RBC has to be rocking. The Wolfpack must score from the short corner against the zone, eliminate fast-break points and prevent second chance points, according to Mark Gottfried.
What do you think of Oregon State and Jared Cunningham? Possible Pac-12 Championship Contenders?
Don't see the Beavers as a Pac-12 champ. But the Beavers are much improved. They have to arrive at Gill or on the road with the same mindset every game. The loss to Idaho was a setback. Cunningham has to watch that he will be the focus of opposing scout breakdowns every game now.
You act as if Syracuse is not an elite team. Are you saying they are not in the debate as the best team in the country? If they had the same schedule as UNC with the same outcomes would you see SU as high as UNC?
Not at all. Syracuse is one of the best teams in the country. I just don't think they are the best. That doesn't mean the Orange won't win the title.
Can we get over this year's lovefest with the Mid-majors? There is a reason they are called mid-majors!!!
These players work just as hard as the players at the power six schools. And just because a school is in the power six (see Auburn in the past, BC this year, Wake Forest, etc.) doesn't mean they are more talented than a team from a conference outside the power six. Watch a team like Creighton or just cue up Butler from the past two seasons. Check back with me during the NCAA tournament and you'll see these teams continue to win games. I don't like the term mid-major.
Do you start to get tired of all these people writing in about 'credit' and 'respect' in the polls so early in the season. Isn't the hwole idea to show improvement during the season?
I know the PAC-12 is down but I was really impressed with Arizona's loss at Florida without Turner. They play amazing perimeter defense.I think they have the making of a sweet 16 team given that Nick Johnson looks like a star and Turner and Chol are growing by leaps and bounds.
Agree. Arizona will be a Pac-12 title contender. This team continues to get better. The Clemson win was its best game of the season.
Who ends the regular season ranked #1?
Kentucky or North Carolina.
What do you think of the future of UTEP basketball? Floyd's got his first class in and although very young, they did give UNLV a run for their money the other night. Thanks Andy!
I fully expect Floyd to keep UTEP near the top of CUSA. Not this year. But long-term yes.
Which potential 1-seed is the most likely to be victimized by the ultimate upset by a 16-seed?
No one this year.
Why is Memphis Having so much trouble on the court.
Leadership and lack of cohesion as a unit.
With the excpetion of a BracketBuster game TBD, there is no opponent that can help Murray's resume at this point. How many losses could Murray lose and still make it at large? Could they really be outside looking in with 28 Wins???
Don't see it. Murray would have to fall flat to avoid a bid.
Where do you see Marquette finishing in the Big East regular season and who would be ahead of them?
I'm going top three.
Your pick, who wins: BYU or Baylor?
Well, I did have it as my upset pick of the week. Maybe a reach but the pool was small.
In Kentucky's loss to IU, if there was one thing you could point to as a reason what would it be?
Inability to close out a game (see free throws and last possession execution). Otherwise a fine effort on the road in a tough environment.
Thanks for the questions. Enjoy the games Saturday and Sunday.
