Here we go!
Should Patriots fans be worried the team is going the "Colts route" meaning poor drafts, a weak running game, and a porous defense is putting way too much pressure on one player, Tom Brady?
Not nearly as much. The Pats have-and have always had-MUCH better overall depth. They trade down on draft day over and over-and that brings depth.
How can the Vikings utilize Joe Webb more? He is a huge playmaker and needs at least five to ten touches per game.
Starting to think that as well. Would like to see them work him as a WR here and there-few routes. Could see a package with him at QB to relieve Ponder every game for a series or two.
Romo and Tebow are opposites...Romo cost them the game by scoring only 34 and not 41...Tebow kicks field goals and plays D too. Thank goodness Romo wasn"t holding on the block or that would have been his fault too! Agree?
MW- If you are a new coach of the Dolphins what do you do with Reggie Bush? Although Hes proven he can be a traditional running back and is having his best statistical season running the football, these numbers are middle of the pack and his receiving numbers are down. Do you keep him in this role or put him in a more Saints-like role?
More of a Saints-type role. Make Thomas more of a feature guy.
Do you think the Giants secondary is as bad as it looks or is it just the quality of offense in the competition they've been facing lately?
Somewhere in between, but more towards the comp level. Rodgers? Brees? They do that to everyone. Dallas obviously has a very good and talented passing attack too. But still-too many blown coverages.
It feels like Dallas is going to miss the playoffs. They won't make Tony Romo the fall guy, will they? And will anyone really consider Rob Ryan as a HC candidate with how poorly that defense has played?
RR doesn't seem like a candidate to me. Not this year. As for Romo-can't be the fall guy. Top 8 QB.
I know you are not a Sanchez fan but his numbers across the board have progressed from year 1, 2 to 3 and as actually quite respectable. Do you feel he has really progressed and what areas has he improved?
All true and I will say that he has played pretty well the past few years. Decisions have been better. They still don't ask a lot of him though.
The "auto update" is off how do I fix this? I need to know your music for the day
Not sure on the Auto Update from where you sit-sorry. But my iPod selection? Taking a different approach today and going with Stand Up-cracking up over here. So if I seem a little distracted, sorry! And can always use Stand Up recommendations.
Matt- Who are your top 5 defensive players for right now?
Well, I think these are the guys in the running for DMVP-Revis would be my vote. Suggs second. Allen and Ware have been real strong.
I can see Elway working with Tebow on his fundamentals for next year.. I think he can improve. That said, I think Denver would then need to look at a backup FA.. Who would be a good pick up?
But what kind of backup does DEN need? Playing their Tebow-O, QBs will take a beating. Do you add a guy who is a runner/Tebow type? Maybe two of them? Or to get a passer and use him for a series or two as a change up and maybe a backup plan if this all doesn't work out.
Three games isn't much to go on--does Romeo Crennel have any chance at getting the Chiefs' job?
I would say there is a chance. I was on the air in KC this morning and they asked what I thought about Romeo as the Head Guy and in charge of the D and J McDaniels as the OC. That isn't terrible, but prob sounds better on paper than functional in real life.
do u think the lions make the playoffs?
I do think so. Not that they are great, but I think they win this week and I don't think the competition for that spot is extremely brutal.
Roy Helu has looked very impressive recently? How do you rate him as an overall rb and do you think Shanahan will allow him to be a fantasy star in 2012?
Shanny is so fickle at that position, so who knows. But Helu has been quite good. I don't think he is fantastic-he really doesn't change directions all that well or make people miss. But clearly the best guy for WASH right now.
Does Hue Jackson reel Carson in, and stop some of those bad TOs...or are we seeing the true Palmer?
True Palmer. That is who he was in Cincy the past few years. In his defense, OAK REALLY needs to get their weapons healthy and Palmer really hasn't played much with this crew overall. Still, he thinks he can make throws that he can't anymore.
Do you think the 49ers hold on to the 2nd seed or will NO overtake them?
Gimmie the Saints. Picking PGH this week in SF if Ben is healthy. Saints are the better team and 2nd best team in the NFL to me.
So who ices Dan Bailey this week, Tampa or his own coach?
Does Gronkowski deserve MVP consideration along with the Big 3 QB's. He could challenge Moss's TD record and is a great blocking TE!
Those three, esp Rodgers obviously, are well ahead of everyone, but Gronk is having a monster season no question. Is he 4th? hmmm...maybe
Should the Vikes trade Jared Allen to aquire draft picks? What would he be worth if traded before or during the draft?
They-and Yates-are extremely impressive. Could see a playoff win, but that is probably it.
Hey Matt with Fred Davis being a FA do you think the Skins let him go after this suspension? (I don't see how they could given how Graham Gronk and Finley are showing what mistmatch TEs can do for an offense)
Well, I wouldn't have any faith in Cooley. But Davis' suspension doesn't help his cause either. WASH needs a guy like him though. I bet he is back.
Love the whole "Tebow" thing going on but also love Denver's D...if you are Bill Belichek, how do you attack Denver's D?
Not sold on DEN's secondary depth-might spread them out and keep them in nickel or dime. But protecting the edges is key.
Matt, SF NEED the 2nd seed right? I can see them getting blown out at the Superdome.
Agreed. Round 2 on the road could be a huge problem for SF
given that dan snyder is the owner of the redskins we shouldn't expect hot seat news or new GM news with Bruce Allen i hope not... cause i could see them lose the last 3 @ giants vikings and at Philly ?
Certainly could lose those final 3. But I tend to think that group has one more season.
Hey Matt, what do you think of Mclain from the Raiders? He seems to get gashed a lot. Who it me smart for the Raiders to go to a 3-4 next year?
Love OAK's DL and they do have some 3-4 components for sure. As for McClain-too inconsistent. Flashes, but like you said, struggles too often...and often in coverage.
Best Super Bowl matchup would be?? Most exciting?
Prob NEng/GB...shootout at the OK Corral
Do you see the Steelers relying more on the running game more with Ben either limited or out against the 49ers and can it be effective against their ridiculously good run D? Steelers haven't been running nearly as much as they used to but surely can't put everything on an injured Ben or Batch
Yeah, I don't think the Steelers get much done on the ground in SF. If Batch is QB, they will run more. But if it is Ben-and injured Ben-then I think it just becomes a short passing attack.
If the Broncos make the playoffs, is John Fox coach of the year?
Have been thinking that myself. Harbaugh's COY stock has dropped just a bit. I still think McCarthy needs to be considered...esp if he is 16-0!!!!
If your the Browns and not sold on McCoy and you have a choice between RG3 and Barkley who do you take and why?
I am not yet on top of the prospects in detail, but I do think CLEV should not be sold on McCoy at all.
Matt, you and every other talking head who fawn over Belichick and Brady had better wake up to the reality that they are one and done this year. That defense couldn't stop a college team at this point.
Not arguing with you. I was asked what SB matchup would be most exciting. I also think BALT and PGH are superior teams.
Do u think the Falcons make the playoffs?
I do. Betting on ATL and DET as wild cards.
Lance Briggs is another strong candidate for DMVP
Briggs has played very well, but not on that level
Is SF overrated? But they are like 0.500 against teams with a winning record. I think they will be one in done in playoffs.
Could be. Very sold on their D. But their protection and right side of their OL is very suspect. Still not entirely sold on Smith either.
Charles Woodson DMVP again?
Nah-hasn't been great in coverage. Makes a ton of plays though.
Which team get's the last AFC wildcard spot? Jets, Titans, Bengals, Raiders?
Going with the Jets. Playing the best of those four right now-clearly.
Wilfork for DMVP? To me he never seems to get enough love for the position he plays and how well he plays it.
He is great, but he is great against the run...and the Pats' opponents rarely run!
Any chance Peyton Manning ends up in SF next year after the Colts draft Luck?
I guess that is as good of a fit as any. Certainly could see him in a different uni
do the broncos have good drafting skills
I don't think McDaniels did, but this crew did well with Miller, etc.
Regarding the DMVP, I hate how it always goes to the big name. Ledarius Webb has more tackles, TDs, forced fumbles, pass deflections, sacks and touchdowns than Revis. If a CB is deserving of the award, it has got to go to Ledarius Webb.
Nah. CB stats are very misleading. QBs throw at CBs that they think they can expose. I like Webb though-no doubt, but def not a DMVP type of guy now.
Matt prater is an absolute BEAST. that is all
Can live with that. Ross and I just did our Pro Bowl votes on the podcast-download it. We both took Janikowski, but Prater easily could be the AFC Pro Bowl kicker.
What would it take for the Skins to get the Colts pick? Would their 1st and 2nd round picks plus Torrain do it? Or is there no way they move from that #1 pick?
That isn't nearly enough. And Torrain isn't worth a thing. Colts will take Luck. They understand the value of a Franchise QB for the next X years.
And with the 2nd pick the Vikings would take...?
Would be listening to offers to move back I would think. But I don't think they could go wrong with a stud LT, WR or CB...maybe be able to swing getting an extra pick in the process from a QB-needy team.
Justin Blackmon would look good for St Louis at 3.
No doubt, but I can also live with Lloyd, Clayton and all those youngsters. How about Claiborne from LSU? That CB situation is dire.
John Elway & Tebow walking down the street. Local guy says to his pal next to him, "Whos the guy with Tebow?"
What can I add to that?
Outside or Cam and Dalton, what have you seen from the 2011 draft QB's? Locker has looked really good when he has come in.
For sure. Exciting. Still need to see much more. Taking that sack last week was rough. Not sold on his accuracy either. I like Ponder-way too many bad decisions, but everything else I am fine with and he will improve. Gabbert looks terrible.
Do you think the Chiefs need to draft a QB? I know they spent big on Matt Cassell, but he does not look like a starting QB for a playoff team.
I wouldn't turn a great QB prospect down in KC. Plus, they don't have THAT many other huge needs. Or...take a guy with big tools in the 2nd round that is just a big work in progress.
Would you resign Anthony Spencer or try to draft a better pass rusher?
Wouldn't break the bank on Spencer, but I have no qualms with him.
Sheard has looked really good for the Browns this year. Do they need to add another young stud opposite him or fill other holes in the draft?
They need a lot! As for Sheard, I have him on my Pro Bowl team actually. Very happy with what he has done. All around DE.
Do you think Robert Quinn has the ability to be a pro-bowl type player?
Yes. Very impressive raw prospect. Natural pass rusher. Very athletic. Will need help with run/pass recognition and being able to play every down.
What comedian r u listening to now?
It is on random, but Robin Williams is on-hilarious
Why is Bill Belichek so opposed to drafting pass rushers?
I don't get that either. They went to more 4-3 this offseason and landed some quality vets like Carter. But it does shock me that he doesn't use a real high pick there.
Does Matt Moore deserve another year at QB? If not do you see the Dolphins drafting a QB or bringing in a vet?
With MIA, I wouldn't overspend to land a QB. But if the opportunity was there, pull the trigger. I do like Moore, but in the end he might be Kyle Orton/Matt Cassel type guy, which isn't good enough.
Interesting take on the rookie QBs...IIRC Jax jumped up to "steal" Gabbert. Still early but Vikes got that better part of that!
No question-and in fact, it isn't even close
M-Dub at this point in the season what can we say about Kevin Kolb??? Is it fair to say that with the play of Skelton that next season theres a QB competiton at Arizona?
It is a problem. Kolb has played better since his return, but not enough to get excited about. Skelton has not been great either, but he does have better tools and has shown flashes for sure.
When will the "Marenovich Project" be rerun?
Not sure...I don't handle ESPN's television programming believe it or not
Also, who's your pick for DPOY? I'm leaning towards either Suggs or Revis. No one else really sticks out in my mind...
Yeah, I would give Revis the slight edge over Suggs. Plus, Revis went to Pitt.
Sean Weatherspoon is quietly having a huge year! Have you or anyone else for that matter noticed?
Big time! Download today's Football Today podcast. I put him on my Pro Bowl team.
Are Eagles fans calling for Reid to get fanned crazy? He's a proven winner and so many franchises would kill to have a coach like that?
Yeah, I think Reid is safe myself. At least one more year. Keep him with Vick, who isn't going anywhere. But they need a new D Coordinator.
Is steelers ILB Lawrence Timmons playing as poorly as it appears?
Has been a poor year for him. Standards and expectations were super high too. He was my preseason bet for DMVP. He has played some OLB, which didn't help, but Timmons needs to play better-and is very capable.
Why do you think some people look at Sanchez's success and say its not him, its the Jets defense and run game, but when Denver does the same thing its all because of Tebow? Just fans being fans?
I will say that there are some similarities between Sanchez and Tebow in that both QBs are not very good passers, but they consistently play their best when it matters most-and their teams win.
They've (49ers) got to move Anthony Davis to guard right?
Well, he is a terrible RT. SF needs to add a RG/RT type-and they are not that rare. See what to do with Davis in camp, but with solid competition.
re: yogi from Alaska, the Jets win in spite of Sanchez's turnovers. Tebow doesn't turn the ball over, whereas Sanchez consistently puts the defense in horrible situations.
Well, that is certainly true too
If the Colts did trade Peyton, what could they get in return?
Not positive what his contract is, but I am sure they owe him a MONSTER bonus. They might just have to cut him if they can't/won't pay the bonus.
Why are the 49ers not using Vernon davis more, especially in the redzone?
Well, he hasn't played great and SF also needs him to help blocking as well more than they would like.
Do you think the Colts biggest problem now is the scouting staff(basically Polian)? They have drafted positions that make sense the last couple of years but the talent of those players is well..0-fer.
Yes. Their drafts have been ridiculously poor. I actually think this latest one might be quality, esp Costonzo...but we shall see. Drafts have been just awful for like 5 years.
re: patrick from NYC. Thanks for making my point. To think the Broncos arent winning despite Tebow's inabilities 90% of the time is silly. Do more homework and reply next week. Ill be here.
Oh I am always up for promoting a good fight!
I've heard that there is a 2 - 4 day window where the Colts can release Manning and not have to pay him $24 million or whatever the crazy number is. Is this true?
That is what I thought too, but I can't confirm that. That has to be why he isn't on IR yet. They want to activate him and really judge his health-even just in practice.
You should definitely put Justin Smith in the conversation for DMVP. I know a lineman in a 3-4 defense will never win it, but he has been the best defensive lineman in the game this season, and it isn't close.
No question Chet. I did a Top 50 players at midseason and took a lot of heat for having J Smith as a Top 10 player overall in this league. Love him.
Folks, that is a wrap! Do it again next week
