Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hi gang. Welcome to the BRSiR. What's eatin' at ya?

Christine (Jasper,In)

You'll probably get questions about this, but why on earth would RPM be considering putting Busch in and getting rid of AJ? AJ only finished 4 spots behind Kurt in the standings. He's been close to winning races before. I don't care if Kurt is a past champion, how do owners expect drivers to ever get to the level of a champion if they keep getting replaced all the time?

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

I think this is sponsor driven Christine. Best Buy may want Kurt in the car to continue it's deal. But I'm not sure it's going to happen.

tricky sparta mi [via mobile]

Loved the finish at homstead but wondering if I'm alone in thinking that tony and carls cars seemed to be way better than the whole field all of a sudden at the end of the chase

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

No, but what did happen in the finale was teammates giving way to the 2 contenders. I saw Hendrick cars give Tony a free pass several times, and the same was true for Carl with the Roush cars.

aroznowski (USA)

Of your ten burning questions for motorsports in 2012, which one intrigues you the most?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Probably the uncertain future of IndyCar. I don't like the direction it is headed.

Geri (Canada)

Mr. Blount, with all the crew chief/driver changes don't you think there will be more surprises/disappointments this season? Still makes no sense that Darian Grubb was let go by Tony Stewart and it certainly is a plus for Denny Hamlin/Gibbs. Your thoughts.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I think Denny and Grubb will be a great combo. But I think Steve also will do a good job for Tony. The problem with these changes is it often takes a half a season or so for a new pairing to jell.

Dick Muldoon (Gillette, NJ)

Brad Keselowski had a great summer, but tailed off at the end of the chase. How do you think he'll do in 2012?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

I think Brad's going to be a contender for many years to come. He has one of the best young crew chiefs in the business with Paul Wolfe.

Nick (Texas)

If NASCAR gave Jr the automic pole for every race in the next season do you think he could win one?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

I don't think poles mean a lot as far as winning the race, but I think he will win a couple anyway.

Geoff (IA)

Do you believe in Dale Earnhardt Junior as a driver that could win on any given weekend and or place in the top 5 at any track, given the right equipment?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

No. I think Dale is a good driver, but not a great driver. He's a top 15 kind of guy most races, but can and will do better at some tracks.

Max (Iowa)

What do you think Rick Hendrick really thinks of Dale Jr. after 4 seasons with him under his belt compared to what he expected when he signed Junior in 2007?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I'm sure Rick wishes Junior would have had more success on the track, but he's a goldmine as far as making money for the team.

Joyce (Los Angeles)

So now that there have been some consequences for the bad behavior by the Busch brothers do you think other drivers now understand a "line" or what is "expected" by Nascar or do you think Nascar still has to be clearer on expectations and "the line" so it is crystal clear?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Hi Joyce. I think it's still a gray area. Some drivers say they know where it is and some don't. Some of it is common sense. Obviously, intentionally pushing another driver into the wall under caution a high rate of speed is crossing the line. But other things really still are judgment calls.

Jason (Denton, TX)

Since Best Buy sells electronics to young people isn't Kurt a perfect fit sort of like Harvick with Bud since the bad boy image is popular with their demographic?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

I don't see Best Buy as a bad boy image. More the geek image. AJ probably fits that better than Kurt. But let's face facts here. Kurt is one of the best drivers in NASCAR. AJ is getting better, but he's not at Kurt's level.

lee (san antonio tx)

Do you think that kurt bush could co-exist with a man like" the king"? I don,t. I know it all comes down to sponsors aj is sponsor friendly and is on the verge on winning so how could they do this.Hope it doesn,t go down this way..........

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

If it happens, it's because Kurt is one of the top drivers in the sport. But I do think Kurt will have to be a boy scout this year, whether it's with Petty of some other team.

Todd (Ga.)

If The Busch Brothers "behave" as you suggest in your story do you think Harvick will become the most hated driver getting all the boos or maybe Newman or even Brad-again?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Not even close. Even if the Busch bro's act angelic this year, they still have the rep.

Lonnie (SC)

Do you think AJ Allmendinger disrespecting the King by blowing him off in the garage has anything to do with Kurt taking over the #43?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Here's how much it has to do with it: 0

david (Dover)

With Kyle getting in trouble and on a short leash as well i think he should bring his kbm to the cup level and him and his brother drive for it then they casn be there own bosses what do you think

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

That's easy to say, but not easy to do. It's all about sponsorship David, and the money isn't there. It also would require hiring a lot more people and trying to steal some quality guys from other teams if they hoped to be competitive. It's a very difficult task.

Dan (Charlotte)

Hi Terry. Who do you believe will be favorite to win next year? Will Jimmie come back strong next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

As of now, he's my pick. But I may change my mind before Daytona.

Tyler (Indy)

IndyCar only has three ovals confirmed for 2012, and Texas is still up in the air. What does this say about the leadership of Randy Bernard? I can see Tony George coming back in a couple years

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

I don't want to place blame, but I strongly feel leaving high-speed ovals is a bad move. The answer is slowing the cars down, making them safer (which they will be with the new car this year) not leaving big-market tracks that are high-banked ovals.

Ronald (Jacksonville)

What's the real story of why Stewart fired Darien?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

When Tony made that decision befroe the Chase, things weren't going well. Then they got on an incredible run, but Tony already had made up his mind.

josh (indiana) [via mobile]

Who has a bigger future in cup ross kenseth or chase elliott

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Good question. Both are talented kids. And Junior Johnson's son is pretty good, also. I'll say Chase.

Boss Hogg (Hazard Country)

What is all this talk about Indy racin'? You tellin' me that the race more than once a year at the Indianapolis 500?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Now that's mean Boss Hogg.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

You said Junior is a top 15 driver who can occasionally do better. Is that really that bad considering how super competitive NASCAR is right now?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

That's the point Chris. It isn't bad, but Junior gets unfairly portrayed as being bad because people try to compare him to his father. However, a win or two in 2012 would help a lot.

Mike (Cincinnati)

Tony Stewart gets 5.8 million bucks for winning the championship and he wants to drink Schlitz? Can't the guy at least upgrade to a Corona?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Hey, the man likes what he likes. I like beans and cornbread sometimes instead of a $50 steak. Sometimes.

Boss Hogg (Hazard Country)

Any rumors about a revival of the old IROC series or even a 1 race all-star run?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Not in this economy.

Shelby (Kentucky)

Did NASCAR renew with Sprint for the same price as their last title sponsor deal? Wasn't it like for 700 milllion?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

It wasn't announced, but I'm guessing it came at a reduced price.

Lois (Va.)

Seriously Terry, Jr. has 1 win since May 2006. That is almost 6 years ago. Why do media and people continue to pretend like 37 year old Jr. is a contender?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

I didn't say he was a contender. I said he is a decent driver, which he is.

Billy (Reno)

Honestly, will the King put up with Kurts attitude?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Like all team owners, he will do what the sponsors want him to do if he wants to continue racing the car. But if Kurt gets it, I'm sure they will have some closed-door discussions about towing the line.

Jeff (Charlotte)

Any chance of Rusty Wallace moving RWR up to cup with Steven running a few cup races?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

They don't even have the sponsor for a full Nationwide season right now, much less Cup. And Steven isn't ready for Cup.

Don (Tenn.)

Why is Penske taking so long to pick the driver of the #22?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

I'd do the same thing. Take your time and make sure you get the guy who fits in best in every way. He doesn't want to make the same mistake twice.

Don (Tenn.)

If Bowyer can call his owner "the worst driver in the history of NASCAR" won't Jack open Kurt with open arms at RPM?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Jack is a different breed of cat from Mikey. But this wouldn't be a direct RFR hire, just an affiliation. So Jack might let it go.

Boss Hogg (Hazard Country)

Any recommended NASCAR related books for the holiday season?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

I recommend my book, of course. The Blount Report.

Walt (Bridgeton, MO)

Do you see Mr. Hendrick taking Vickers back at HMS since Brian and Ricky were best friends?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Not gonna happen.

David (Working )

How is rick hendrick after his crash is he doing ok will he be ready for the season and at daytona also any word on sponsorship for kenseth

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Rick says he gets better every day and he should be 100 percent by Daytona. Matt recently said he thinks they will find a sponor, but still no word.

Geri (Canada)

Who will take Danica's ride in Indy? Dan Wheldon was the candidate and since that is out of the question who is next in line?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

I'm surprised Andretti hasn't already announced this. It makes me wonder whether Go-Daddy wants to do it without Dan.

Danica (Home )

Terry will i win a race this year at daytona or dega in either series

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

Well fake Danica, I think those events probably are your best chance.

Dan (Charlotte)

Will all 4 Hendrick cars make the chase next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

That's a tough thing to do. But I'm gonna say yes.

Joey Logano (NC)

Is my ride safe?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

No fake Joey. You're going to have to step it up in 2012.

Ernie (NY)

Does losing 4 quality cars, RCR, RFR and Red Bull mean more winners or fewer?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

It means more start-and-parkers and a weaker field. NASCAR should stop running 43 cars. The show would be better with 36 or 38.

Ernie (NY)

So Rowdy doesn't look bad to sponsors do you think he will stop all post race interviews except from the media center?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

No, sponsors don't want that. They want a guy who talks to the media whenever he can and acts like a grown up.

Donnie (Chicago)

willm rcr go back to a 4 car team when dillon moves up to the cup ranking and will he be driving the 3 car at the cup level do you think he deserves that number

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

That's a couple of years off, but it's possible Dillon could run the 3 in Cup someday.

Heather (KS)

If Burton doesn't step it up in 2012 will this be his last chance at RCR?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

He just signed a new 3-year contract.

Jimbo F (Tallahassee, FL)

Does Kurt getting the 43 just prove that you can bee the biggest a-hole to everyone and it doesnt matter, sponsors and teams will put up with it anyway as long as your competitive?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

That's true in every pro sport Jimbo. But we are getting ahead of ourselves here. This hasn't happened yet.

jack (alaska )

so is ragan a go or no go for the 22 is aj officially out at rpm whats going on

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Both still are pending Jack.

Keith H (Seattle)

Good morning, Terry. I'm starting to understand why this is the "silly season." Have patience, People! It will all work out in the end. PS. It's freezing in the 206.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

I'm in the 253 Keith. A little nippy south of you, also.

Vern (NJ)

First Meltdown of 2012. Kyle, Kurt, or Danica?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Vern, they just need to meditate and think soothing thoughts.

Nick S (Birmingham, AL)

Do you see the Truck Series being around in a couple years or will it be a victim of the economy? IMO that will be a shame, its the best racing of the 3.

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

I agree the trucks produce great racing. I think it's long-term future is uncertain.

Geri (Canada)

Mr. Blount, I think the Dillon's will do very well in Nationwide/Trucks with the great equipment & personnel RCR has, what are your thoughts and Merry Xmas

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Merry Christmas do you as well Geri. The Dillon boys are the real deal, not just lucky guys with a rich grandpa. And people tell me the younger bro (Ty) may be better than Austin.

Vern (NJ)

Okay if RPM goes to a 3rd team and Smoke gives Danica his points, than Kurts past champ is useless?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

That's a lot of ifs Vern. But I doubt Kurt would need the provisional. And there won't be a third car unless a new sponsor magically appears.

Hope (Dallas)

I think IndyCar's American future may be dark, not dead, for a bit, but their international appeal seems to be strong (more sponsors, tracks outside of US, etc). I think they need to invest in oval promotion at Kentucky and New Hampshire over several years. I am looking forward to the oval race in Cali.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

They have some good things going Hope _ the stylish new car, new engine manufacturers, etc. But I think they shouldn't go down the CART path (no pun intended) of more and more foreign races and street courses. The highly-praised Baltimore street race last year is $12 million in debt.

8Tbone8 (texas)

Do you think Jr. will step out of the car and become a full time owner like Hendrick and Childress did?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Not for at least four or five more years. And even then, I don't know that he wants to be a full-time Cup owner. He could do it and let Kelley handle most of the operation, which she does now.

Jerry J (Dallas, TX)

Do you ever see NASCAR racing at the new F1 track in Austin? Not neccesarily in the next 3 years or anything but maybe in the distant future?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Not in Cup, but maybe in one of the feeder series. They already have talked about running Grand-Am there.

Pete C (Seattle, Wa)

Are people making Kahne out to be alot better than he really is? He hasn't made the chase that often and hasn't really won that much, plus the "25" team has never really done will at HMS and thats were he is going.

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I disagree Pete. I think Kasey is going to shine this year. He's never been on a top-tier team, but now he gets his chance. He's very talented and ready to step up now at age 30.

Mike H (Pittsburg, PA)

Do you ever see Lance McGrew being a CC again? He was mediocre at best the last 3 seasons and he had 2 talented drivers

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Crew chiefs are a lot like coaches. They tend to recycle. And the more experience you have the better you get.

Matt R. (Pittsburgh)

Why is there a resistance to cutting down the field for races? What does NASCAR gain by having 5 (or more) cars S&P every race? New rule: 36 car field, top 30 in pts auto-qualify...

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

I'm with you Matt. But I'd rather see no free entries. Everybody has to qualify on speed. Now that would spice of qualify, which for the most part now is coma-boring.

Geri (Canada)

Mr. Blount, who do you think is an excellent not very good crew chief e.g. Chad K., Steve A. or Danian G.?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Chad is the best of the best. You will be surprised who I rate No. 2 Paul Wolfe.

Andy R (Philadelphia, PA)

Was Mr H disappointed Grubb went to JGR and Toyota? Is he nervous Grubb will take all the HMS secrets over there?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

He wanted Darian to take the engineering job at Hendrick, but he understands Darian still wants to crew chief. And CCs switching manufacturers and team is just part of the drill. Trust me, there aren't a lot of secrets in the garage.

Boss Hogg (Hazard Country)

Will you have regular chats like this throughout the off-season?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Maybe not every week, but as often as we can. It's been a wild offseason, so it's good to do them. And we're less than six weeks away from the media tour in Charlotte.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta run folks. Christmas shopping to do. Have a great week. Peace.
