Chat with Garry Paskwietz

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:56 PM)

Hello everyone, let's get started

Gordon (Eugene)

Are there any news of any players transfering to USC from other schools? Would any transfer players count against the 15 recruits this year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:57 PM)

The one rumor that has been out there in the last week or so is Josh Shaw. He played DB locally at Palmdale HS before heading to Florida. He is leaving the Gators and the rumors are that he's expressed interest in USC, nothing more than that at this point.

David (Arlington, tx)

Hi Garry, who would be our next target if we lose Gerald Bowman to Oklahoma, or Miami? Any news on the florida transfer Joshua Shaw?

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:59 PM)

No clear answer on a target after Bowman. He fits real well in the Trojans plans right now and they are going all out to get him. I see a real battle with Oklahoma on this one. Nothing updated right now on Shaw.

David (Arlington, tx)

Garry, What are the chances of landing Kevon Seymour and Ellis Mccarthy. I've heard Ellis is down to three schools Oregon, Cal, USC. A little worried about us losing this top recruit from our own backyard..

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:00 PM)

That's fair to say on Ellis with those three schools. I still think SC is the team to beat in that scenario. With Seymour, the Trojans had a good in-home visit last week and I think they are the team to beat on this one too but Washington is still hanging in there.

Sam (Dallas, TX)

Who is USC more likely to land Nelson Agholor or DJ Foster?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:00 PM)

Definitely Nelson Agholor. If Foster doesn't end up at ASU, he would likely be at Oregon.

Chris (Newport Beach, CA)

Garry, would you be surprised if Lane signed no more skill players that have verbally committed and focused entirely on the OL/DL/DB position?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:02 PM)

I think you need a corner. Ideally, you want two corners and a safety but the restrictions might mean not getting everything you want. No matter what though, I think the Trojans need to come away with at least one corner.

Mike (usc)

Hey Garry important question about early enrollment. Coach Kiffin said he will be taking 5-6 early enrollies. We had 4 and now we only have 2. What names are u hearing out there other then Bowman that USC might take early? Any Juco guys that can be offered late?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:04 PM)

There really aren't any names out there as strong possibilities. Deaysean Rippy had been making some noise at one point but he's an extreme longshot. My guess is the coaches will end up filling those spots somehow, even if they are late offers like last year with Dallas Kelley and Jeremy Galten.

Simon (Los Feliz)

What do you make of the new hires in the Pac12?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:05 PM)

I think the conference just got a lot stronger. Leach and Rodriguez are obviously some big offensive names and I actually think Mora could be pretty good. I don't know too much about Graham.

Miguel (Los Angeles)

Hey Garry is it official to say that we are out with Arik Armstead? What replaces can you see at DE? Odenigbo? Mccord?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:07 PM)

It's all but official on Armstead, it appears as if he is headed elsewhere. This is a blow for SC, no way around it. McCord says he will visit so there is always a chance but Armstead was a top local player with SC ties, you hate to lose a guy like that.

Chris (Hermosa Beach)

what are the lists so far for visitors on the 13th and 20th? Are we bringing in a ton of OOS guys like Rippy, McCord, Nelson, Nance, etc?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:09 PM)

Tyriq McCord and Zach Banner will be here on the 13th, as well as committed guys like Darreus Rogers and Jordan Simmons. The coaches are trying to finalize guys like Nelson Agholor and Ellis McCarthy. It is being set-up as the big weekend of the year. Anybody who doesn't visit then will likely come in the next week on the 20th.

Chris (Newport Beach, CA)

Does the decommitments in the last week hurt us or help us as far as landing other players that will contribute more then who we lost (York/Mickens)?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:11 PM)

These de-commits were two of the tough parts of the scholarship restrictions but the reality is that there were other players on the wish list ahead of these guys and that's why they will be playing elsewhere.

Chris (Newport Beach, CA)

Cal seems to really be on a tear recruitment wise. Does this surprise you given their performance over the last several years? Is it mostly the new facilities? It seems like Tedford should be on the hot seat.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:13 PM)

Cal has one of the best recruiting assistant coaches around in Tosh Lupoi and he is doing another terrific job this year. I'm sure the new facilities help too.

Jake (Riverside California)

Garry, thanks for all you do for us. We have had a couple boys de commit in recent weeks and have heard of several commits possibly wavering. Is this just the usual trends of recruiting or have we hit a bit of a bump in the road? I figured not playing in a bowl game or looking for new coaches would really help us hit the recruiting trail hard and would give us excellant results but now I'm not so sure.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:15 PM)

I think this is all part of the plan by the coaches. They are hitting the recruiting trail hard and they know exactly who they want to bring in. The tough part is trimming down the list to fit the reduced numbers but now that the season is done they have done that and they are ready to proceed. We saw last week with the moves by Mickens and York, as well as the announcements by Derrick Woods and Ryan McDaniel that they were headed elsewhere. Those players did not make the final priority list and now the coaches are focused on the remaining players on that list.

Rob (Washington, DC)

What are the chances that we land an elite DE as well as, McCarthy, Shittu, and Armstead?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:17 PM)

That might be the most unclear spot left in this recruiting class. Without Armstead, who is likely headed elsewhere, there doesn't appear to be any clear targets who are leaning to the Trojans. There is one verbal from Pio Vatuvei although even he is taking other visits. There is talk of trips from guys like Tyriq McCord and Mario Edwards so there coaches obviously think there is a shot there.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NFL Team do you think would be a Great Fit for QB Matt Barkley since he is Probably going to be in the 2012 NFL Draft?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:18 PM)

Matt Barkley took in the recent Seahawks game on Monday night and he has a very good relationship with Coach Carroll. I'm guessing PC would do anything he could to get Matt up there.

Matt (Los Angeles)

Gary - if Kalil leaves, who are the top 2 you think will be fighting for his position? Is A. Walker a tackle or guard? And do you think Ruffin is going to be coming in as a linebacker or safety?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:19 PM)

I think it would be either Walker or Graf moving over. I know there have been some rumblings about Holmes but I don't see that one happening. Ruffin comes in as an outside linebacker.

Mike (LA)

Garry which OTs are getting? Josh Garnett, Andrus Peat, Zach Banner, Kyle Murphy? Are we out for Stanley? Any chance we can offer Joey O'Connor?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:20 PM)

The Trojans will gladly take any two of those first four. I still think Banner is the most likely of the group to end up at USC. SC hasn't shown as much interest in Stanley lately and he is focused on five other finalists so my guess is that one is over unless something dramatic changes.

Bill/KZ 56 (Belmont Shore, CA)

Any info on the Trintity High boys from TExas

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:21 PM)

They had talked a while ago about taking a trip on the 13th of January but lately Brian Nance has been saying he can't get in touch with the SC coaches so it's unclear if that visit will still happen.

Georgetirebiter (Bakersfield)

Starr and Wheeler will be here for both those weekends as regular students. Good recruiters.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:22 PM)

I agree that it will be good to have those two as part of the recruiting weekends in January. I also think it will be a benefit to have Jordan Simmons there on the 13th, he is as vocal of a recruiter as anybody in the class.

Gregory (the OC)

Assuming that Starr, Wheeler, and Wilson are EEs, any ideas on who may complete the EE class?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:23 PM)

I think the coaches would love for Gerald Bowman to fill one of those spots as well.

Gregory (the OC)

With all of the college coaching staff turnover across the country, any thoughts on the SC DB assistant vancancy?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:23 PM)

I would hope to see Sammy Knight get some real consideration for the full-time spot. I know there are some who would want a coach with more experience but you can't really argue with the way the defensive backs evolved through the year under his coaching.

Kevin (Santa Monica)

What's the status of the Armsteads? Do you think they'll be at USC next year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:25 PM)

Right now I would say no, I don't see them at USC this year. Cal made a huge impression this past weekend and there are a lot of rumblings that they could be a prime spot. Oregon, Washington, Notre Dame and Texas are all still in it to varying degrees.

Chris ((Greensboro, NC))

Do you think we take a true running back in this class now that York is out

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:27 PM)

My guess is no, especially if the plan is to continue putting Farmer at tailback. Part of the appeal of York was the fact that he was a mid-year enrollee but he was also expected to fit the role of a "big back" since it appeared last summer as if Buck Allen wasn't going to qualify. Allen did qualify though and he spent last fall as a redshirt so he'll also be available next year.

Adrian (Lakewood)

Hello Garry!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:27 PM)

Hello Adrian

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is your Favorite NFL Team Even though you Cover USC Football?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:29 PM)

I don't really have what you would call a "favorite" NFL team anymore. I used to be a Dolphins fan back in the day but I just don't get to follow the NFL as much anymore.

Adrian (Lakewood)

Garry who do you believe will be the next Trojan commit, and when?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:30 PM)

I'm going to say Gerald Bowman. He needs to make a decision pretty quick in order to enroll for the spring, it's basically down to USC or Oklahoma. If T.J. McDonald leaves, the opportunity to step in right away in the rotation might be too much for Bowman to turn down.

Vince Carella (Moorpark, CA)

Who is in the lead for Devonte Neal

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:31 PM)

There are a lot of people who seem to think he could end up at Notre Dame. I'm not counting the Trojans out on this one.

Vince Carella (Moorpark, CA)

Are the Trojans interested in Joshua Shaw and does he have to sit out a year

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:32 PM)

There hasn't been any indication of that yet. Shaw hasn't given any interviews since he announced he was leaving Florida so there really aren't any updates since then.

Adrian (Lakewood)

Garry do you think the Trojans will ever try an alternate uniform to lure recruits as other programs do?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:34 PM)

There was a plan in place to wear "alternate" uniforms for the UCLA game this year. There was an agreement in place and I was told the jerseys that were designed were "pretty sharp". The word leaked out about the plan last summer and there was so much negative reaction that the plan was scrapped. There are a lot of people who think the traditional uniforms themselves are enough to attract recruits but I still think it could happen under the right circumstances.

Otto (CA)

Is Matt Barkley really 6'2"?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:35 PM)

If not i wouldn't put him at much more than that. He's definitely not a 6-5 guy like Leinart or Palmer.

Hank (Denver, CO)

In your opinion does USC have a real shot to land Stefon Diggs?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:35 PM)

I wouldn't say it's a great shot but it's a shot. He keeps on mentioning the Trojans.

chris (hermosa beach)

How solid is vatuvei?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:36 PM)

He says the right words about being committed but he also says he wants to take trips to schools like Cal and Washington. I don't think you can consider that 100% solid.

Tim (Phoenix, AZ)

Would USC be happy if Shittu and McCarthy were the only remaining DL they landed?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:37 PM)

I would say yes. The coaches would love to add even more of course but if they get those two it would go a long way.

James (Los angeles)

do you think Armond will transfer to whichever school that Arik ends up at?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:38 PM)

They have been very clear about this plan. Armond definitely intends to go wherever Arik chooses.

Steven (Miami)

If Bowman ends up at OU or Miami is it safe to say that USC won't take a safety in this class? THX

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:39 PM)

That would be my guess. I just don't see anything changing with Shaq Thompson or D.J. Foster right now.

Alan (Palm Springs, CA)

Have you heard anything new in regards to McCarthy and Shittu wanting to play together in college?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:40 PM)

I wouldn't put too much stock into that. Shittu talked about that a little after The Opening but it's not a huge part of the deal, they will make separate decisions.

Todd (Los Angeles, CA)

Do you think Andrus Peat could start at LT as a true freshman if USC can land him?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:41 PM)

Not likely. It's a big leap for any true freshman but it's entirely possible that kind of opportunity could be there next year at USC.

Adrian (Lakewood)

Will Agholar enroll early if he commits?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:42 PM)

I haven't heard that, as far as I know Agholor will enroll next fall at his school of choice.

Otto (CA)

I read some reports that Woods and Carlisle had ankle and knee surgery but there wasn't much detail. Do you know the extent of the injuries?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:43 PM)

Kiffin made it sound as if both players were having relatively minor surgeries and they would be back soon with no anticipated problems.

Otto (CA)

How does Max Wittek's arm strength compare to Matt Barkleys? Thanks.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:43 PM)

Max has good arm strength but not as good as Barkley. The QB with the arm strength closest to Barkley is Scroggins.

Carl (Dodge City, KS)

Who would be the most likely to end up at USC on signing day as a 2nd CB to go along with Seymour if he signs>

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:44 PM)

The first choice would be Davonte Neal.

Keith (Salt Lake City, UT)

When all is said and done do you see USC finishing with a top 5 class?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:45 PM)

I think it will be close. The coaches will have to close strong, and they are certainly capable of doing that.

Ben (Farmington, NM)

Do you see this staff pulling a shocker on signing day and possibly landing someone like Tracy Howard or Stefon Diggs? THANKS

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:46 PM)

I wouldn't put anything past this staff when it comes to recruiting so a last-minute shocker is certainly a possibility. Diggs is definitely a hot "surprise" name for the Trojans because he just seems to be lingering out there as a possible SC target.

Kyle (Columbus, OH)

Do you know if the Trojans are actively recruiting CB Tracy Howard out of Florida even if he is a long shot at best? The kid is a baller!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:47 PM)

They are actively recruiting him and he is listening. Hard to say if the chances are legit though.

Bill (CA)

What is the status of Jeff Fishcher's lawsuit against Kiffin\Pola? Thanks.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:48 PM)

that got settled a long time ago, it was actually a lawsuit from the Titans owner.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:48 PM)

Thanks everyone. Sorry if we didn't get to all the questions. We will do this again next week.
