Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:58 PM)

Good afternoon folks. Thanks for coming by. Looking forward to some good dialogue.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, I missed last week's chat because I wasn't consulted about the time change. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

I put out advanced notice. Do you have the Interweb over there at 56th Street?

Roy (Nashville)

Given the Titans' inconsistent running attack this year and the possibility that someone like Norv Turner (who's done good work developing QBs) could be available as an OC at the end of the season, do you think Munchak looks to make a change at OC after the season wraps up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Absolutely not.

Coach K (Houston)

As the regular season come to the final 3 games, will my team win the rest of the games and secure a first round by and home field in our first playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Two out of three, I would guess.

JJ (Kingsport, TN)

The Colts defense is playing about like it has for years. The offensive line, maybe a little better. The receivers, more healthy this year than others. Does Manning make that much of a difference, in your opinion, from 10-11 wins/year, to zero?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

No. It's largely his absence, but not entirely.

Justin R. (Maryland)

Paul, do you think that with Karl Klug getting as many sacks as he has from the DT position and not even starting, combined with his small size for a DT that they may try him at D. End next year? Or will they leave him be as a possible John Randle type player?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

After a failed move of Jason Jones from tackle to end, why on earth would they do it again?

Matt Schaub (Motorized Scooter)

Should I be worried about being the next Wally Pipp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

No. I am shocked how many people prefer this week's flavor to a proven staple.

Jonmo2 (Bryan TX)

T.J. Yates has done a great job, and he has a future. But I don't see him taking Shaub's job next year, even if the Texans win it all.Do you think he can get a starting job somewhere else, or be Schaub's backup next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

He's not a free agent, he can't just leave. He'll be the backup.

The Joshman (Houston, Texas)

I for one don't need ESPN coverage to validate that my Texans are good. They're good. The world will find that out in the playoffs. What do you think about JJ Watt for Defensive ROY?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Strong contender for second behind Von Miller.

hbgwell (oboro, ky)

Record Aside, what's your opinion of Munchak's "non coachspeak" or non fisherness?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

I love it. He's straight forward and no BS. And he doesn't think saying, for example, that Akeem Ayers shoulder injury is an AC issue will lose the Titans games.

Todd (Louisville)

I hear lots of calls for Jim Caldwell's job but with the offense playing so poorly, where are the calls for the OC job? Do you think all of them will be gone at the end of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

So you find the OC responsible but not the OC's boss? The buck stops with Jim Caldwell, not Clyde Christensen. Generally if the head coach goes, the staff goes too.

ed hochuli (chat ref)

Delay of Game on Kuhaskey already starting chat late. 5 yards and let's get chat started!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

It was 1:58 CT in my office. I throw a challenge flag.

Steve (Houston)

What do you think of Palmer's play calling at the end of the titans saints game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Didn't like the CJ run. Don't like throwing to Marc Mariani. Didn't have a problem with fade to Damian Williams, who was open. Locker missed him.

christian galindo (houston)

how far do you think the texans can advance in the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I don't think it's out of the question that they make the Super Bowl.

Billy (Michigan)

Paul Do you think my Chicago Bears can make it into the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

No.

Jake (Houston, TX)

You buying or selling TJ Yates?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Buying.

Midge (Indy)

Keepers on the defensive side: I'm thinking Freeney, Nevis, Mathis, Angerer, Bethea, Powers. Can we build that core into a top 10 defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I think it can be built into a defense good enough to win with.

christian galindo (houston)

iv heard some rumors nd have wondered of your opinion,do you think wade phillips might might be at some job interviews for HC during his time off this week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Why do you say you've heard rumors instead of "I read a John McClain story suggesting it's possible?" It's possible, only because there are so few obvious good candidates out there. But now? No, it would be breaking all sorts of rules and protocol and he had surgery he needs to recover from.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

If the Jags could pick between Coher, Dungy, Fisher, Jon Gruden, which one in your opinion would be the best pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Tony Dungy, but there is no chance he's coming back. I think Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden would find it difficult to work with a GM who's already in place in Gene Smith. So I'd say realistically Fisher. But I think he will land in San Diego or Miami.

Big Time (SEC)

Reflect on this for a moment, Manning at the helm for the Titans. I see playoffs and maybe a super bowl. Will the cheap owner open spend the money to get Manning should he be available? Manning ensures a true sell out with butts in seats!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

It would be intriguing and Bud would spend. I don't understand why people put the butts in the seats part as a factor. The tickets are all sold. Why is it so important whether people are there are not? Please don't say concession sales.

Matt (Jax, fl)

If you had to present a defense for the job Gene Smith has done, what would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Finding and getting a QB ready to play is hard and takes time. The defense is two players away from championship caliber. In sync with a new coach things can get better quickly.

Colin (Indy)

Do you think it is possible the Colts make no changes at HC or with the Polians if they win one game this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I would hope that the Jim Irsay doesn't judge 1-15 as somehow significantly better than 0-16.

Rick (Mississippi)

Do you think TJ Yates play so far has changed the concensus that the Texans were going to be one and done to a true contender in the Playoffs yet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I said from the start the AFC is hardly good enough to declare the Texans will be an easy out just because Yates is playing. They beat Atlanta with him, and the Falcons are as good as some top AFC teams, I believe.

Dan (Richmond, VA)

Paul, since the Titans need to win out and the Texans already have the division, do you see the Texans resting their starters in their week 17 matchup?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

I expect home field or a bye will be at stake, in which case absolutely not.

its (outta here)

which would be a bigger loss for texans in the off season? if we lose mario? or if we lose wade Phillips?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Obviously Wade Phillips. They've been fine without Mario Williams.

hbgwell (oboro, ky)

This being the best Reinfeldt draft class, is that a reflection of being "Fisher" free or Reinfeldt get lucky?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Can't it just be the best class under Reinfeldt so far?

Will (Nashville)

How impressive have Damian Williams and Nate Washington been since Britt has been injured and CJ has been so inconsistent

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Washington's been great, I'm very impressed. Wrote about him off the game Sunday. Damian Williams has steadily gotten better.

James (J'ville)

Is this Houston team built like the Dilfer led Ravens team that won the Super Bowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Not at all.

Bob McNair (Reliant Stadium)

Are you ready to come here for a playoff game? We are coming in under the radar since not a lot of people are talking about us. We are excited here in houston and are excited for you to come. You better bring some ear plugs because it's going to be loud.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Bob, please don't give me this under the radar BS. You're the No. 1 seed right now. How can that be under the radar? I'm looking forward to a playoff game at Reliant. Atmosphere will be great.

Jason (Bmore)

So Kubiak gets into the playoffs, and doesn't necessarily limp in, but does so with a cupcake schedule. Does making the playoffs save his job in general?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Absolutely. His job should have been safe before the Cincinnati game. I wrote that Friday.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Jags feel Jay Gruden is not ready yet to become a HC, what you say?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Could be a good option if they have to go younger and less experienced.

Rob (Kentucky)

Why are we just now seeing or hearing about Jamie Harper again? It seemd he provided a spark, although in pre season and we all know our running game could use a spark!! What are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Because Javon Ringer got hurt. Harper is the No. 3 back. Now the No. 2 back is down, so the No. 3 back moves up.

Rick (Nashville)

I get the idea that you aren't that impressed with Locker.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I'm impressed. I'm not as impressed as a lot of people seem to be. And I'm not at all down on Matt Hasselbeck. They didn't win that game, people realize, right? Locker made a bad decision on the last play.

David (VA)

The Titans need a pass rusher. What do you think of the Titans picking up Mario Williams? He's the type of guy that would fit what Gray is doing

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Mario Williams in Tennessee or Jacksonville would be very intriguing. Jags far more likely to spend that way.

jdub (NC)

Paul, who do you think would be the best fit to take over for Del Rio in jville? i think keeping Mel Tucker is a good fit; i'm just not sure if OC Koetter is right to play call the offense. your take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I can't understand why, given a chance at a fresh start, anyone would want them to hire from the current staff. You definitely cannot hire the coordinator of the league's worst offense.

Trip (Jaxsonville)

Thoughts on Khan's stache?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

What's not to like?

Trip (Jaxsonville)

The Jags scored a lot of points last. Over under the Jags score 21 points tonight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Probably under.

Harrison (H-town)

Will the Texans get the number 1 seed? And if you could re-rank QBs for the draft last year, what would be your order?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I don't know on seedings. Rookie QBs: 1) Cam Newton, 2) Andy Dalton, 3) Jake Locker, 4) Christian Ponder. Have no idea how Kaepernick looks. So if we're talking guys we've seen then Yates would be next, right? He's certainly played better than Blaine Gabbert.

Chris (Nashville)

Other than just saying he was good or bad, what did you see in Locker? Some things you liked and disliked?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Accuracy was still an issue. Decision making in final play was poor. Mobility and speed are excellent. The touchdown run was fantastic.

Kuharsky Fan Club (All Over The World)

Is Mario Williams too much of a health risk to sign him to an expensive long term contract?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Love your name. There is some risk, sure. I'm interested in idea of Texans keeping him for either OLB franchise tag or a negotiated tag between OLB and DE price.

Chuck (Smyrna)

Not to be a hater, but not sold on Yates yet? If he was that good he would've gotten drafted higher. I still think he has the classic "rookie" game in him, I just don't see it till the playoffs with their remaining schedule. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

If Tom Brady is this good, wouldn't he have been drafted higher? (Not comparing Yates to him in any way.) See the fault in that sort of logic?

Reed (Nashville)

Starting a franchise next year, do you take MJD, CJ, or Foster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Probably Foster, least wear and tear on him.

Fred (Johnson City)

You are on record as stating the Colts should trade Manning. What if you knew he would give you four healthy years of 35+ TD passes, 4500 yards, and you could get two #1's, one #2, and one #3 for the first pick. What do you do then?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I'd keep him.

colts (gm)

okay dont you think we should keep manning next year and then draft trent richardson. think we could be back to where we started or even better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Drafting running backs high is a bad idea.

Blaise (FSU)

You commented yesterday about Weaver's involvement in the HC search, that it's no longer his to conduct. But don't you believe that any work done this far would only help Khan. Why would Weaver undermine Khan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

He wouldn't undermine him. But if I am Khan, why do I want the help of a guy who was so ineffective that he had to sell?

Dan (Houston)

Would Tebow vs an Undefeated Packers team in the Super Bowl cause ESPN/the internet to explode?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Probably.

Wade Phillips (Hospital)

What is the first word that pops in your head when describing our front seven? Also, how much recovery time should I expect on my surgery?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Swarming. You said about 10 days.

Bulls on Parade! (Houston)

Who's more likely to lose...Balt @ SDPitt @ SFNE @ Denver

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Pittsburgh, I think.

Adam (Charleston)

Stopping the run has always been a priority in Tennessee, however the Titans are 20th in the league in run defense this year. I can't see them advancing into the playoffs giving up 121 yds a game. What's the problem?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Insufficient talent.

Mario (Houston)

So you're saying Yates is worse than Locker and Ponder, really?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Projecting off of what we've seen, I'm not jumping a fifth rounder to seventh overall quite yet.

Tom (Jax)

Do you think DuJuan Harris will have an expanded role next year? (aka MJD's handcuff for fantasy football)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I expect it'll be Rashad Jennings.

Rob (Kentucky)

I understand Harper was the no. 3 back but Ringer and Johnson havent done much I would have expected to see Harper in before now. Do you think the Titans have put too much faith in CJ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

That's what you do with a star you give a big contract to.

Trip (Jaxsonville)

Paul, call me crazy but I think jags should pass on WR in the first and go for a new Tackle, so we can move Britton inside and get better protection.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Britton isn't a guard. That was Del Rio being silly.

Ryan (Jacksonville Beach)

Could Khan's stache co-exist in the same city as Fisher?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Sure, it would start a trend and Jacksonville would be the most-mustached city in America.

Heitkamp (Houston)

I'm a huge believer in the Texans making it to the superbowl. How do you think we would fare against Aaron Rogers and a pathetic green bay defense if we got a chance to play them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I'd love to be pathetic enough to be 13-0.

Colin Bailey (Indy)

If you think the Colts should trade Manning, what do you expect the market for Manning to be? Do you think a team would give us a Carson Palmer-type deal for a 36 year old coming off 3 neck surgeries?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Can't be traded unless he moves the bonus back or unless you're willing to take a cap hit this season of $28 million plus.

Mel Tucker (Jacksonville)

What are the odds I get HC job if I win 2 out of next 3?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I hope low. Nothing personal. But after nine stagnant years, why would anyone who likes the Jags want someone connected in any way to JDR to be in charge?

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

One of the more interesting comments from the Khan press conference yesterday was Weaver stating the Jaguars are two drafts away from being really competitive. What a telling comment considering in 2007 the Jaguars were thought to be at the cusp of being a true contender. Do you think two drafts are enough?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

If Gabbert turns things around, I think one head coach, one staff, one good free agent period and one draft could be enough to compete.

Kyle (DC)

If the Jaguars commit to Gabbert, do you agree the most important offseason move, more so then a WR or OL, will be to hire the right QB coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

QB coaches can be overrated. If he's not under the right head coach and coordinator it doesn't matter. You need the coach who hires the right coordinator. The coordinator keys it all.

Josh (Jackson TN)

Do you think Kenny Britt can be a 100% next year after the knee injury? Is there any precedent for such a recovery?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Probably a lot to ask.

Matt (Albion, IL)

Coaches in the AFC South that may be considered for head coaching opportunities elsewhere?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Coaches from bad teams don't get such opportunities. So no Colts or Jags. No Titans as it's a brand new staff. Maybe Wade Phillips. Maybe Rick Dennison.

DPOY in the afc south (houston)

I must be connor barwin, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Other candidates: Johnathan Joseph, Brian Cushing, Paul Posluszny.

Finley (On the couch)

Are you getting me that authentic Tebow jersey for Christmas?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

You don't wear clothes. And you are not allowed on the couch.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Could you see a scenario where Rob Chudzinski becomes HC, and Tucker remains as the DC? Both worked together with the Browns.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Possible.

Heitkamp (Houston)

You didn't answer my question the first time so I will ask you again, how do you think the Texans would fare against the Packers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

I think they'd probably lose.

Chocolate Fountain (EverBank Field)

We had some good time PK. So you know, I'm always here for you.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

You weren't there for either of the two recent games I was there. So you lie.

Fandomonium (The South)

PK, what's your favorite AFC South stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I am completely biased based on my vantage point. And LP Field's press box is a mile closer to the field than Reliant Stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium or EverBank Field. To be in the crowd, I suspect I'd like LOS best.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/31984/myers-helps-key-little-known-texans-line" target="_blank">Myers helps key little-known Texans line</a>

Matt (Albion, IL)

Since you probably haven't had to pay to see a NFL game. What two teams would be playing if you had to fork out the cash?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Teams from this year? Patriots-Packers.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Were you surprised to see this number of coaches dismissed prior to season's end? I was told by someone that the NFL frowns on coaches being let going during the season so if true this seems to contradict that statement or teams are simply trying to jockey for position in spite of the "unwritten rule".

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

There is no unwritten rule. The league has no place being influential on such things and I've never hear it has objections.

Finley (In your closet)

I'd like to revisit that "no clothes" position you're taking. You just assumed I didn't want to wear clothes. I've got my eyes on a nice sweater vest.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Sometimes we need to make the right decisions for you.

Robb D. (Houston)

As a Texans fan from day one, I am astounded by how good this team plays every Sunday. Am I crazy, or do the Texans look like they will be good for a while?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

They should be.

Andre Johnson (Houston)

Do I try to play the next 3 games or rest up for the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Why would it be three or none? It'll be two or one.

Peter (Houston)

Take your pick: Locker or Yates in the long run?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Locker. But let me see them play a little more.

Santa Claus (North Pole)

OK kids, Paul has things to take care of to stay on the "nice" list. Everyone be good and we'll see you soon.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Thank you so much. You are the man.
