Chat with KC Joyner

KC Joyner
  (3:00 PM)

Good afternoon! Let's talk some fantasy football!

Jason (Boston)

Seeing neither of these TE's are STUDS which 1 do I play from Ballard, Fasano or Daniels?

KC Joyner
  (3:01 PM)

Go with the one from the best offense. That means starting Ballard.

David (Windsor, Ca.)

Need upside for championship. Do I chance Kevin Smith and Demyrius Thomas?

KC Joyner
  (3:02 PM)

Thomas is due to face a Patriots secondary that gave up 50 points to Redskins wide receivers last week and has given up more fantasy points to opposing WRs than any other team in the NFL. Thomas is the pick.

Rob (Chicago)

Hi KC, thanks for all your help! In a PPR need to fill my flex with one of Bradshaw, Mario, Spiller or Kevin Smith. You all have the 3 rbs ranked right together. I want to use Smith but afraid he might not last the game. Who would you use?

KC Joyner
  (3:04 PM)

The Redskins secondary looked awful last week, so Manningham would be the choice.

Ryan (Trenton, NJ)

KC... Let's start this chat off with the beer of the week. Dogfishhead Chicory Stout - it's akin to a more flavorable Guiness and a great winter beer. Aside from that, what's your take on Demaryius Thomas? I've got Tebow and might start him and possibly double up on a TD. I would be starting him over Miles Austin.

KC Joyner
  (3:06 PM)

Thomas is rated quite high on the TFS start-sit charts but Austin is rated just a bit higher because of a very favorable matchup against Talib. Would start Austin in this case.

Dan (Pittsburgh)

Well I was on the wrong end of that Roddy White outburst last night, so I need some big scoring and I am concerned about Rivers, Balt hasn't given up multiple pass td's in a game all season, is going with Orton (who already faced GB this year) over Rivers crazy?

KC Joyner
  (3:07 PM)

Ouch. Orton is hurt, doesn't have much in the receiver department and has been with the Chiefs for only a couple of weeks. Rivers is a risky must start on the TFS charts, but that rates him a whole lot higher than Orton.

Kurren (Cali) [via mobile]

Hello. I'm going against the number one team in the league, in the 2nd round of the playoffs. I need to pick one out of spiller, James jones, and boldin. What do you think?

KC Joyner
  (3:08 PM)

Sounds like a recipe for finding the best upside pick. In that case, go with the player from the best offense, which means starting Jones.

Kevin (Syracuse)

I can't get anyone to say/answer ANYTHING about Anquan Boldin. should I just be rid of him and take my chances with the likes of Garcon or Kevin Walter?

KC Joyner
  (3:09 PM)

Boldin is struggling right now because he's not dominating weak competition as well as he did in the past. Even with that caveat, still can't say to start Garcon or Walter over him.

Devin (Florida)

KC, my christmas stocking is overflowing with CJ2k, Megatron, Welker, R. Bush, Felix Jones and Colston -- which one sits this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:10 PM)

That's almost bragging but at least it isn't a humblebrag (which is a hilarious Twitter feed and a must read on Grantland every month). Probably would sit Bush out of that group because the Dolphins QB woes could make it easier to stop him.

G (NY)

Tennessee DST @ Indy or Arizona DST Vs. Cleveland?

KC Joyner
  (3:11 PM)

The Titans have fewer weaknesses in their secondary than the Cardinals, so they rate higher on the TFS start-sit charts. Quick note on the charts - they are available for a season-ending rate of only $15 at www.thefootballscientist.com. Only site plug of the chat.

BSB (Philly)

Which three of these players would you start?F. Jones, L. Robinson, L. Blount, D. Bryant, W. Mcgahee, B Marshall. Depth can be a curse.

KC Joyner
  (3:13 PM)

BSB, that might actually qualify as a humblebrag. Jones, Bryant and McGahee would be the picks.

Mike (Tampa)

Am I over managing if I consider starting both Foster and Tate instead of Reggie Bush? I feel like I'm guaranteed 40 points between the two Houston RBs, and have a weird feeling that Tate may be the better performer this week.

KC Joyner
  (3:14 PM)

A recent study I did on the Texans for an Insider article showed that Tate has a 9.6 GBYPA (which measures a RBs productivity when given good blocking). That is an elite mark and given how bad the Carolina run D is this year, starting both of them could is justifiable, although Bush is rated higher than Tate on the TFS start-sit charts.

Happy Holidays bro, show me some love here (California)

Who do I bench in my PPR: Wallace, Moss, Fitzgerald, or Cruz?

KC Joyner
  (3:15 PM)

Happy Holidays to you as well! Moss has actually struggled very much of late (see this week's Pass Plays for more details), so he is the sit option here.

David (Atlanta)

Quick hit .. Cam or Rex?

KC Joyner
  (3:16 PM)

Like the matchup for the Redskins, but Cam still rates higher because of his running skill.

Pete (Spokane)

Demaryius Thomas or Antonio Brown at my flex? I have Tebow also. Thanks KC!

KC Joyner
  (3:17 PM)

They are both excellent start options but Thomas wins because he has a much more favorable CB matchup.

Mark (VA) [via mobile]

Flex spot legarette blount or Brandon Marshall? Thanx

KC Joyner
  (3:18 PM)

Marshall if Moore plays, Blount if he doesn't.

KC Joyner
  (3:19 PM)

Which is something that you won't know before the Bucs game, so wait and see if Moore practiced today. If he did, start Marshall. If Moore did not, or if there are strong signs he won't play, start Blount.

JJ (Philly)

KC, I'm in the playoffs despite this uninspiring RB trio: Mendenhall, Hillis, Ryan Grant. Can you pick two? I keep thinking Hillis will bust out against that unphysical Cards D

KC Joyner
  (3:20 PM)

Just can't bring myself to trust starting Hillis. Would start Mendenhall and Grant.

Eric (Being Eric)

G. Jennings went down and need a fill in . . . Dem. Thomas, James Jones, or Gaffney. Standard 10 team

KC Joyner
  (3:20 PM)

Hands down, Thomas.

Answer this one and I'll name my team after you (California)

Who gets the start in a PPR: Gresham, Ballard, Olsen

KC Joyner
  (3:22 PM)

Appreciate the offer, but do this instead - let the chatters choose your team name. They are a creative bunch and usually come up with some really cool options. Gresham has a tough matchup and Olsen is hurt, so Ballard wins this one.

AL (SF)

No one's perfect. Thinking of Donald Brown over Moss, BLloyd, LMoore or MFloyd this week. Need 1 WR and 1 flex from this group.

KC Joyner
  (3:23 PM)

Would start Lloyd and Moore out of that group.

Adam (Burlington, VT)

Spiller is ranked fairly highly in the ESPN rankings, yet all the experts agree he has a terrible matchup? Should he really be ranked higher than 3WR/Flex receivers like Burleson or D. Williams?

KC Joyner
  (3:24 PM)

Spiller ranks 22nd on the TFS start-sit RB charts, which is a higher ranking than either Burleson or Williams. Would give him the start.

Tom (Double Dipping)

Hey KC, You answered my question last week and I won!! Lets keep the streak alive. I own Romo and Rice, and deciding to start either Laurent or Boldin. In which Direction do I "double Dip". Thanks KC!!

KC Joyner
  (3:26 PM)

Boldin's matchup is much tougher than Robinson's, so Robinson wins this one.

J.B. (PA)

KC: I think I've got an interesting D/ST question but you have final say. I'm thinking SEA this week over PITT. I mean how can I not go against Mr. Hanie at QB (Sam Drucker might be better)?

KC Joyner
  (3:26 PM)

They are basically rated as equal on the start-sit charts, but Chicago's QB situation made Seattle end up one rank higher than Pittsburgh. They win that battle.

Ethan (Okc)

Splitting hairs between Harvin or Wallace any insight?

KC Joyner
  (3:27 PM)

I'm a big Mike Wallace supporter, but he has a very tough matchup in Carlos Rogers and his QB is hurting. Harvin wins this one.

joe (Vt)

Help Please Tebow vs Pats or cam

KC Joyner
  (3:29 PM)

Cam normally scores more than Tebow, but the matchups this week are heavily in favor of Tebow. That gets him rated just slightly ahead of Newton on the start-sit charts.

joe (salem, nc)

KC and the sunshine band in playoffs for first time in 8 years and need to choose 1 of each Helu or Felix, wallace or Moss, and Miami, TEnn and AZ D's. thanks fingers crossed

KC Joyner
  (3:29 PM)

Big time congrats for making the playoffs! Felix, Wallace and Tennessee are the choices.

EV (NJ)

KC The Football Scientist! I've gotten some great input and would love your scientific take on this... Rodgers for 3 quarters against a decent KC secondary or Stafford against a bad Oak D against the pass? What do you think?

KC Joyner
  (3:30 PM)

Rodgers is the highest rated QB this week. Have to give him the start.

Jay (NJ)

Odd man out: Jordy Nelson, Fitz, Nicks, AJ Green

KC Joyner
  (3:31 PM)

Tough call but Fitz loses on this one.

Bob (DC)

Curious--do these chats get more or less visitors this time of year? It is the time of year that people really care (playoffs) but on the other hand lots of people are already out of the running so I could see it going either way. Also, please pick a wr and flex. N. Wash, Manningham, L. Moore, James Jones (playing agaisnt Rodgers), and Kahlil Bell.

KC Joyner
  (3:32 PM)

The volume of questions tends to peak earlier in the year, but the drop-off really isn't that significant. Manningham wins out of that group.

Clark Griswold (Chicago)

KC, can I get your thoughts on having a starting QB (Rivers) go against your starting DST (Baltimore). My other options are playing Grossman or picking up Detroit DST. Make a change or just roll with it? Thanks

KC Joyner
  (3:34 PM)

It's always best to go with the best player regardless of if that goes against another player on your roster. Rivers and Baltimore should be the picks.

Scoop D (Pretending to be busy at work)

You seriously would bench Fitzgerald for a rookie in the playoffs?

KC Joyner
  (3:35 PM)

If that rookie is A.J. Green against a horrible Rams secondary, absolutely.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

(If you let fantasy questions slip in on Thursday, let me slip in a non-fantasy question on Friday!) LSU Tigers vs. Indianapolis Colts, this saturday night, who would win and what would be the score?

KC Joyner
  (3:36 PM)

LSU has a team that could be on its way to posting the best two-season stretch in two-platoon college football history. Would think they would win against a very banged up Colts roster.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buffalo)

Are you going to start Cam over me? Miami secondary is weak and HOU is nice

KC Joyner
  (3:37 PM)

Cam absolutely gets the start. Fitz is way too hot/cold and even if he has a good day, it might not equal a bad day by Cam.

ZEKE (San Jose)

Good to see Clark Griswold making the FF playoffs!! I'm looking at the good AZ D/ST vs CLE with a different QB and possibly missing their 2nd and 3rd leading receivers. Over Houston vs an unusual Carolina offense. Good call or is Houston's defense just too good to bench this week? Also, how much does BLloyd drop if Bradford is out?

KC Joyner
  (3:39 PM)

Even with the matchup and Wade Phillips health issues, the Texans still rate higher than Arizona (whose secondary just cannot be trusted). Lloyd's value drops without Bradford but he's still a good vertical pass option who the Rams will throw to regardless of who is behind center.

Wise Guys (Vegas)

LSU vs. Indy line would be Indy -20.5

KC Joyner
  (3:40 PM)

Not sure I'd go quite that far!

Stressed Student (Beantown)

KC, Please answer my question so I can study for my Immunology final, need to know Demaryius, Laurent, Tate, or Driver for my flex?

KC Joyner
  (3:41 PM)

If only there were a fantasy football class in college. Thomas wins out of that group.

Vinny (NJ)

I'm not usually a beggar but please answer my question! I have been in this chat all year and just want one question answered for the playoffs. PPR flex: Beanie, Lloyd, or S. Jax

KC Joyner
  (3:42 PM)

Really appreciate your being in the chat all year. Beanie wins that because of a very favorable matchup against a weak Browns run D.

Jason (Indy)

Yo KC! Big fan of your work, sir. What do those start/sit charts say about Beanie, Lynch, and SGreene? I'm gonna start MBush for sure, but need to fill my RB2.

KC Joyner
  (3:43 PM)

The charts say Greene and Lynch would be the best two starts of that group.

Jan (OH)

I like at least one other person today have big concerns about Rivers and his turnover downside facing the Baltimore def. As an alternative I have Andy Dalton facing a depleted St. Louis secondary. Dalton doesn't turn the ball over much and I believe he is good for 1-2 TD's and 250 yards. Do you agree and does this make him a better option than Rivers this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:44 PM)

Rivers does rate a couple of ranks higher on the TFS start-sit charts, but he does have some risk. If you are looking for an almost guaranteed set of points that will likely equal what Rivers will post, don't hesitate to start Dalton.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

KC, stupid work kept me away! Help set me up at K and DEF - Sea Bass, Cundiff or Hanson? DET or CIN?

KC Joyner
  (3:46 PM)

Stupid work! Don't normally cover kickers, but would say Cundiff out that group. Cincinnati is the highest rated defense on the TFS start-sit charts, so they win the D battle.

Dr. Lou (Espn)

Hey KC I teach a class every week on this station maybe I could add a FF course! Dalton,Grossman or Grossman?

KC Joyner
  (3:47 PM)

Dr. Lou and fantasy football - now that would be must see television! Dalton ranks slightly higher than Grossman on the TFS start-sit charts.

Dan-o ('Sota)

KC - Helu or Felix Jones the better play?

KC Joyner
  (3:47 PM)

Felix. His 8.0 GBYPA this year is very good and he's playing a horrible Bucs run defense this week.

Reese (Charlotte, NC)

KC,This might be a dumb question but for this week would you start Cam Newton over Aaaron Rodgers? I have not done that at all this year, however at this point I am concerned that Rodgers might not play the whole game since they are about to clinch home field advantage. Your thoughts? Thanks.

KC Joyner
  (3:49 PM)

My sense of the Packers is that they are going to honor the memory of Vince Lombardi and go all out to win every game even if the situation says they don't have to. Newton has a tough matchup as well, so Rodgers would still be the start option.

Matt (WI)

Better flex play : Ben Tate or demaryius thomas...need most upside

KC Joyner
  (3:49 PM)

Thomas, as he is playing against that sieve of a Patriots pass D (see the earlier chat comments for more specifics).

Mike (answer my question please)

KC, need your advice so i can get back to the championship. Am I crazy to start romo, austin, felix and witten? I can use lloyd, mathew or keving smith for austin and felix. Thanks.

KC Joyner
  (3:51 PM)

Just look at last night's game. It might have seemed crazy to start every Falcons player against the Jaguars, but in the end every one of them posted quality fantasy point totals. The Cowboys will mimic that against the Bucs, no don't worry about starting every one of them.

Dan (NYC)

Is Thomas the only Denver WR worthy of a start against "that sieve of a Patriots pass D?"

KC Joyner
  (3:53 PM)

The issue for Decker is that there are only so many passes to go around for Denver and Thomas is being targeted for a lot of them. Decker could be a good longshot start but just can't rate him any higher than that.

Percy (on fire)

So would you start Laurnet Robinson over me?

KC Joyner
  (3:54 PM)

Nope. Harvin is listed as an absolute must start on the TFS start-sit charts, a designation that is the highest the charts give to a player. Robinson ranks as a borderline must start, so Harvin wins that one.

Rob (KC, MO)

KC, I love your work, but it's obvious you don't pay much attention to the kickers. Cundiff is injured, less than 100%, and you have SeaBass going against a Lions D that can't stop the run. I'd have advised SeaBass on that earlier question.Make it up to me - who's the higher upside playh in a PPR league at RB2 - JStew @ Houston, or Ryan Grant @ KC? Thanks, and thanks for the season!

KC Joyner
  (3:56 PM)

Thanks for clearing that up. Kickers are the one part of the game that I don't cover. Houston's run D has been great in many ways this year (see this week's TFS ESPN.com article on the Texans for more details), so Grant would be the start option here.

Inquiring Minds (Want to know)

So Bengals are the highEST rated on your charts, or of that group? If not, who's your top 5 plays this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:57 PM)

They are the highest rated fantasy D/ST.

Meatloaf (NY)

I would do anything for a fantasy football question answered, anything to know if I should start Austin over Lloyd but I won't start Mike Williams again.

KC Joyner
  (3:58 PM)

Paradise by the Dashboard Light is an all-time great song and music video. Scooter's baseball call rules. Austin wins that battle.

mike (fl)

That rodgers and stafford question has been answered in almost every chat this week. can i get mine answered? I got cj and bradshaw but im starting nicks and eli. should i start tebow instead of eli to limit my giants?

KC Joyner
  (3:59 PM)

Tebow and Eli are both listed as must starts this week, but Eli does rate a bit higher because the Giants throw more often and their defensive matchup is nearly as favorable. Can't worry about starting too many players on one team when the matchup is right and this week the Giants have the right matchup. Start Eli.

KC Joyner
  (4:01 PM)

Well, hate to run but I have to tape an interview for ESPN Radio's fantasy blitz that will be played later this evening. Quick notes - the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @kcjoynertfs. I also answer as many fantasy football questions as possible on that account. The TFS start-sit charts are available at www.thefootballscientist.com. Hope to see you all here in next week's chats!
