Hey, everybody. Let's get started. What's on your minds today?
Any chance I actually get drafted in rounds 4-6?
Always a bit risky to draft kickers. Only the most prolific hear their names called, but the best earn a shot in camp and make a team. I'd expect Bullock to get a shot.
David, Should I go run heavy to bludgeon Stanford's D strength or start by shredding their weak secondary?
If you're Oklahoma State, Stanford's D doesn't offer much you haven't seen. Do what you do if you're the Cowboys. They've had a more balanced offense than perhaps they get credit for. Do both and keep the defense off balance.
What's your take on Charlie Weis' vow to beat K-State in the coming years?
Good place to start. He's right. There's no reason why K-State should be better than Kansas. Bill Snyder is the difference. If he gets Kansas back to winning seasons and better than K-State like KU was toward the end of Mangino's tenure, he'd make a whole lot of people in Lawrence happy.
At what point do I start following Chris Low
Another few months of these questions? We'll probably do the same thing we did with Nebraska and Colorado with Mizzou and Texas A&M. Look for the official handoff before spring practice.
David, I heard a rumor that both Gabe Lynn and Brandon Williams are both transferring, have you heard anything about this ?
Heard plenty of that about Brandon Williams, but hadn't heard anything like that about Lynn. Nothing official on either yet, to my knowledge.
OSU really doesn't have that many players leaving this year. The thing I'm worried about is our QB. Who do you think will start? Chelf, Walsh, or Lunt? I'm thinking they will end up with at least a 9 game winning season. Thoughts?
Say what, Ty? Were you not watching Markelle Martin or Justin Blackmon? What about the offensive line, which loses four starters again? OSU probably has a shot to win nine games, but my money right now is on Chelf. We'll see come spring.
How many wins do you see for the Big XII this bowl season?
Have to wait for my predictions on that one, Frank. Send Pitbull my best, though.
Would you rather Texas A&M and Missouri stay in the Big 12, or are you excited about WVU and TCU?
Doesn't much matter what I'd rather have happen. I think Texas A&M and Mizzou are better fits in the Big 12 and the Big 12 is better with them, but TCU and WVU should be about as solid of a replacement as you could ask for.
If RG3 comes back, and K-State plays well, could we be looking at Baylor and Kansas State as the teams to beat for the Big XII title next season?
Would certainly be among the favorites, yes. Oklahoma can't be ignored. Texas and OSU could be right there, too.
Besides the big name bowls, what bowl are you most intrigued by and why?
I love points, and I love watching Baylor's offense. Give me the Alamo Bowl. The Huskies and Bears are going to light up the scoreboard.
Hey Dubbenstein, two questions. One, I get he notion all Sooner fans secretly deep down want to see the Belldozer every play next season. What's your take on that? Two, how big is OSU's drop off after this year? They look like a 4 or 5 loss team without Weeden2Blackmon.
No way. There's not a better passer on Oklahoma's roster than Landry Jones and it's not close, no matter how frustrating Jones can be to Sooners fans sometimes. We touched on OSU, but I'd say that's about right. They seem like a 7-9-win team with some upside. They'll bring back a lot, but losing Weeden and Blackmon takes out a lot of "sure thing" plays. Like Mizzou this year, it'll depend on what they get of the QB spot.
Many OU fans crack me up being in panic mode after season. The season was over-hyped and OSU and Baylor were just better teams. No excuse for TT, but get over it. Why can't fans see the big picture, Relax...and realize that it is COLLEGE football and Mayhem happens? Why?
I've thought the same. This year didn't work out for OU, but it seems like a lot of folks that follow the program want wholesale changes. My take: This year's one more reminder that it's, to borrow a term, dadgum hard to win a national title. It's even harder when you lose guys like Whaley and Broyles. The Tech loss was horrible, but Oklahoma's fine. It suddenly looks really thin at receiver and running back, but that can be fixed in recruiting.
Your early Heisman winner for next year?
Ubbs, do you think Texas will have a 6th straight year of top Big 12 defense next season?
I think this is just the Longhorns fourth consecutive year leading the Big 12 in total defense, though.
Attending any bowl games this year?
Yep, a couple.
Another blue chipper from Texas transfers again. We've seen alot of this coming from Austin. How come?
They get a lot of blue chippers? They don't all work out. Not sure why, but it wasn't working for Darius White. Good decision to leave. Both sides will be better off. White couldn't crack the rotation during a bone-thin year at receiver. Not sure why. He could maybe make it happen somewhere else. Texas can recruit someone else to fill his scholarship.
What are the chances that Mizzou is in the Big XII next year?
Will do so only if somehow strangled by lawyers.
What confrence gets the best bowl record this year?
Big 12's got a great shot. The eight bowl teams are favored in six teams. The SEC's nine bowl teams are favored in eight games.
Are you sure you would recommend Landry Jones stay at Oklahoma? What if he struggles like he did in the games without Broyles and his draft stock plummets? I think that is too big of a risk (especially if the offense doesn't click and he gets benched for Bell).
Interesting take. I could see that going through his head, but he'll still have Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds to throw to next year, plus maybe Trey Metoyer and ... Dorial Green-Beckham? Not to mention Kameel Jackson. He won't have Broyles, but he'll have plenty of time to adjust. He's a good quarterback.
How does osemele knott or klein make the AP all American but Osemele is SI first team... seems a little strange to me
People have different opinions?
Does Weeden's stats at the end of the Fiesta make the golden boy look average?
Now that Todd Graham snuck out Pittsburgh's back door, what are the chances that the Panthers come after Paul Rhoads as their next coach?
I'd do it if I were them. Would be a good move for Rhoads, too. Seems like Pitt has their eyes in another direction, though. Will be interesting to see how long Rhoads is at ISU.
Ubbs, I gotta qb problem. To JUCO, or not to JUCO? That, is the question.
Gotta go JUCO. That, or pull the trigger on a guy like Jacob Karam or Dayne Crist. Case McCoy and David Ash have a long, long way to go to prove they're "The Guy." Guys like Ash, even if they're true freshman, show more flashes than Ash did. He's not exactly going up against a murderer's row of defenses in the Big 12, either. His own defense is the Big 12's best.
How much of Texas Tech's poor season can be attributed to injuries and how much can be explained by being a bad football team?
Without the injuries, they'd be a bowl team, but no more than seven wins. Tech wasn't a great team this year.
What was the best environment you experienced in your big 12 travels this year? Can't say a nuetral site..
Will have a post on this later. Last year had a lot more environments that were better.
What do you think about Texas going after a graduate QB for next year? Is Texas turning into a SEC school? Hey if yah cant beat em, join em right?
It's more the situation they find themselves in. Like Oklahoma, they've been spoiled by great QB play lately. Suddenly, without Colt McCoy and Vince Young, they don't have it.
Dav-O, you got any room for Katherine and I this Christmas? I can park my RV in your driveway if that's cool. See you soon.
Since it was clearly named after you, what are your thoughts on D Ubbstep?
I don't remember who tweeted it, but it hit it on the head. "Dubstep music is for people who want to hear the soundtrack to Transformers transforming."
how do you think texas will do next year
Better than seven wins. QB play can't be worse.
Ubbs, what are your projections for most improved players for next year? For example, players that perhaps show a lot of room for growth during the off-season, whether it be healing from injuries, or the likelihood of learning from this season's mistakes, or simply the opportunity to better physically prepare for college level athletics?EMAW
Look out for Arthur Brown. Would anybody be surprised if he won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and made All-American teams? I don't think so.
Any chance that I can get Texas Tech to play Washington State in the future?
I'd love to see it, but I wouldn't count on that one ever happening.
Can Mack Brown survive a loss to Cal in the Holiday Bowl?
Yes, Mack's health is fine, to my knowledge.
With Jonathan Gray coming in next year to compliment Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron, do we need an elite QB or just a game manager at Texas? I think we can compete for a conference championship next year and a national title the following year with all the talent we're bringing in recently. Thoughts?
You're a bit ahead of yourself, from where I'm sitting. If Texas won the Big 12 without elite QB play, they'd be breaking the Big 12 mold. Look at the all the Big 12 Champions over the past decade ... you win with quarterback play. Sorry Nick Saban, Matt Mauck doesn't win a Big 12 title.
Why does the Big 12 want West Virginia?
Good football teams mean eyes watching, which means more valuable "inventory" and football games on TV. West Virginia brings that. That's the biggest reason. Same with TCU, even if it's stadium and fan base is small.
Where am I next August?
On an NFL sideline somewhere.
Pretty amazing what Baylor's football and basketball programs have become, no? They were the laughing stock of the league for YEARS.
Absolutely. Great time to be a Bear. Unbelievable rise.
Have you had the chance to see/feel the atmosphere at Mountaineer Field before? Specifically during the LSU and Pitt games.
I haven't. Really looking forward to seeing a game at TCU and WVU next year, as well as visiting in the spring.
Big 12 schedule out any time soon? What if the courts hold it up?Then what?
I wouldn't look for it for quite some time.
What do you think of James Franklin's chances at a Heisman playing in the SEC?
Not impossible. Mizzou will win some games right away in the East, and we'll see if they can steal some games against the West powers. He puts up big numbers.
My coaching staffers are getting lots of phone calls. Who do you think is my greatest flight risk?
Definitely Todd Monken. He's already gotten looks from other programs like Southern Miss and Illinois.
Definitely Todd Monken. He's already gotten looks from other programs like Southern Miss and Illinois.
Lots of coaching turnover this year. Who do you think is on the hottest seat starting next season?
Probably Tommy Tuberville. If Tech goes 6-6 again, he'll have a lot of pressure heading into 2012. Nobody else is even close to the hot seat.
Hey Charlie! Don't forget, in the state of Kansas, football runs through Manhattan. See you in MY stadium in 2012. I'll go easy on ya. Dubbs, what do you think? 62-16 sound bout right? Or should I just pull my starters at half?
Them's fightin' words.
Teach me how to Gundy?
Class has been in session, it seems, every time OSU nabs a big win. ... which was a lot this year.
All right, then who's the most likely to be poached by a bigger program if no one's on the hot seat? Rhoades, Briles?
Yep, those are the two for sure. Maybe Dana Holgorsen, but he's still got a lot to prove at WVU.
Do you miss us Huskers fans Ubbs? WE MISS YOU!!!
Will I Gundy in New Orleans ?
Nope. Les chows down on some synthetic turf in postgame.
Why does everyone believe TCU will stink it up next year in the Big 12? They bring back almost everyone except their secondary, who didn't play that well this season anyways. With a roster full of underclassmen and G Pat at the helm, I would have to believe they are a top 3 team next year in the Big 12.
You're reading the wrong folks, Rickey. I think the transition to playing tough games week-to-week will keep TCU from winning the Big 12, but they should win about nine games next year. Will be solid. I can't wait to watch Casey Pachall, Josh Boyce and Skye Dawson.
How much longer does Briles have in Waco before he's pryed away by a bigger and better program?
He just got a huge raise up to $2.5 million, and he's had his opportunities to leave. Hasn't done it.
You are aware A state is now a force 2 b reckoned with ?
We'll see about that. Would have been interesting if KU had hired Malzahn.
With TCU being a former SWC member, who will be there biggest rival?
Good question. Baylor is probably at the top of the list. That may have to be something that develops organically. I'm not sure anybody really "hates" TCU just yet. I don't know how much of that SWC stuff is left over for Texas and Tech.
I sense TCU would love to make the Big 12 pay for the last decade and a half of exile from the adult's table in college football. Should be fun to watch.
Is Tyler Lockett available for the Cotton Bowl possibly?
Doesn't sound like it. You don't mess around with injuries to internal organs. The kidneys? Kind of important.
Yall miss me yet ?
I don't think so just yet. Turner's a good guy, but I'm not sure he did much on the field that KU will miss.
Texas Tech-TCU has heated up recently, due to Tech backing out of the game in Ft Worth! It should be just as heated as they Baylor game! Also, Texas could be close if the Big 12 title runs through either city!
Good point. I forgot about that little dust-up. I'm not sure it matters too much to most casual fans of either team, though. Rivalries develop from memorable games.
Cannot wait to see the trio of Texas running backs next year. With that rushing attack, just need a QB that manages the game and can throw short passes to Shipley with an occasional deep pass. Texas looks loaded for the next few years.
They're loaded at running back, yes. No doubt about that. But history still tells us you need a QB to win with consistency in this league.
The game has changed.
Any chance I fly to NYC next year?
Definitely a chance.
When should we look for your bowl picks?
In due time.
Does Barnett keep his starting job next season or does CPR re open the competition in spring with a new OC coming in? Any ideas who the new OC will be?
Based on what he did late in the season, I don't know how you can open next season with a new starting QB. Barnett was so good in so many spots, and as a freshman, he's got a ton of room for growth.
What are my top 2 concerns in the Fiesta Bowl?
Scoring at least 40 points. That's pretty much the only one.
Will the Mizzou/KU game be played again in the next 5 years?
I'm betting no.
Any chance I get to play with my Brother come next season?
I'm betting no on that one, too.
Will I eventually be the proper fit for my team????
Dear Texas fans, you need more than a stable of running backs to win big. Trust us.
How does Mizzou's offense stack up compared to SEC defenses?
Would be rough sledding in the West. Mizzou should be OK in the immediate future in the East.
What's the over/under on conference games we'll win next season?
SEC teams win consistently without consistently stellar QB play - why doesn't that model fit the Big 12. Is defense the key?
Different styles of play in different leagues. You win by winning at the line of scrimmage in the SEC. You win by throwing it around in the Big 12.
Whats the name of the MIzzou OC with the bad hair
David Yost is the name of the Mizzou OC with the awesome hair. I don't know who this guy with the bad hair is you speak of.
That'll do it for this week. Thanks for all the questions, everybody.
