OK, let's get rolling...
Does Iowa even stand a chance? Also, when do you think Ryan Broyles will be drafted and where to?
Last year in the Insight Bowl, Iowa beat a Missouri team that was ranked higher than this OU team is now. So yeah, Iowa has a chance. Too soon to project Broyles' draft stock because of the injury, but the best he could hope for is third round. Because he won't be able to work out for NFL teams before the draft, he could go lower.
what do u think the chance is of the oklahoma sooners getting dorial green-beckon and do u think ou will be in the title race next year we have recruited some great wr already
OU is right there with Arkansas and Texas. So they have a pretty good shot. I don't see OU being a title frontrunner next year, with or without DGB.
will mike stoops be on the staff next year?
It's possible. Bob Stoops basically said today he is not going to fire anyone on his staff. So either Venables or Martinez will have to leave for there to be a vacancy. That could happen. But that has to happen first before Mike is hired.
Who recruits do you expect to come in at the semester? Who does OU sign at the running back position besides Alex Ross?
All the JUCO guys for sure. Stoops said today there should be 4-5 of them. As of now, not sure OU signs another RB, but they were certainly working to add at least another.
What is your reaction that Ronell Lewis will not be able to play in the insight bowl
why are we not at least in a January 1 day bowl when I see teams that are with worse records?
Has to do with the Big 12 bowl agreements, and where a team finishes in the conference. The days of Jan. 1 bowls are over anyway. There are better bowls played on other days.
Peterson was the only comitt from the weekend. Is that a bad sign and what are our chances with DBG and MEjr?
I don't think it's necessarily a bad sign. Would it have been better if DGB and Diggs had made visits? Sure. But the Sooners are still in the mix for DGB. McNamara could be committing in the coming days. That would be a key get for a team desperately needing a tight end. I think this is probably going to be a Top 10 class, regardless of DBG and others.
We heard a lot about the 5 star guys coming to Norman last weekend. But it seems like for every Gerald McCoy there are 5 RJ Washington, Adron Tennell, Rhett Bomar, Mike Reed, Jermie Calhoun busts. Why do so many high profile recruits seem to wash out at OU? It seems like this staff is better at developing 3/4 star talent than identifying superstars....
OU hardly has a monopoly on 5-star washouts. XLK at Oklahoma State, Darius White at Texas... 5-star recruits don't always pan out, and that's the case everwhere.
With all the transferring and some of the uncertainty with recruiting, are there any rumblings about any of OU's current commits decommiting?
Haven't heard that at all.
What do you think about the Sooners football next season?
I think it could be a transitional year. The defense is losing its 3 best players. The offense could be losing its QB, and has to retool at WR, TE and possibly even RB. OU has a chance to be good. But no one is going to be picking the Sooners to win the national title before the season.
Jake, with the disappointment of this year, what do you think the culture/mindset of the program will be heading towards next year? Any major shakeups?
Doubt there will be any major shakeups. Probably several minor ones, though.
There seems to be a lot of off the field issues with OU as much as on field issues. I don't think Bob Stoops has lost control of his team, but I do feel he has a lot more work ahead of him besides X's and O's. Your thoughts?
Agreed. Attitude, chemistry, leadership of this team is to be desired. Those problems were much bigger than any game plan or scheme.
Jake, What JUCO guys are the Sooners looking at getting? Any DT's?
OU has verbals from DE Chaz Nelson and TE Brannon Green. S Gerald Bowman, CB Kasseim Everett and RBs Marion Grice and Damien Williams are the targets we know about. No DTs.
What commits do you expect from this past weekend?
OU has a good shot at getting a commitment from TE Taylor McNamara in the coming days. It will be awhile before DBG makes an announcement.
Just hit me straight with it. How bad is it there right now? No returning tight ends, seemingly every RB transferring, Lewis is declaring early, etc. etc. etc.
Are we cousins?
What do you think is causing all these players to transfer/quit?
Combination of things. For Williams, it was a family issue. For Calhoun/Miller, it was playing time. Class attendance, grades, and failed drug tests are other culprits.
In the presser it seemed that Stoops expects more transfers. Any inside info as to who?
Any big time names that could be comitting in the forseeable future? any word on Mario Edwards?
Stoops didn't deny today that James Haynes and Josh Aladenoye are gone. I don't want to throw out other names, but WR could be a position that suffers some attrition.
Matt, DGB and Mario are the biggest names out there. It's going to be tough landing, either. But OU got Mario in for a visit this past weekend, and DGB has developed a good rapport with the OU coaching staff. We'll see what happens.
What do you think the odds are Mario Edwards, Jr. will drop FSU for OU?
Reading between the lines, FSU is still the leader. But he hasn't ruled out OU or Texas yet. Both schools are swimming upstream, I think, though.
Jake who are the JUCO kids the Sooners are high on and which one will make an immediate impact
Green at TE and Nelson at DE for sure. Bowman would have a chance to start at safety if he came to OU. Everett, too, at CB. Any RB would have a chance at getting carries.
Did it sound like to you that Bob was hinting maybe one of his coaches taking another job?? He said with all the changes around college football you never know so we'll see! Am i looking into that too much?
I think you're on the right track.
Give me a reason to get psyched for the insight bowl, i'm trying to find one but other than hoping to end the season with a win i can't think of anything to get amped up about.
I'm psyched about going to Phoenix. Weather there is great in December.
Is there a lot more turmoil than usual, or do we just have some more access to the inner workings of the team?
Combination of both. There have never been this many guys rumored to be transferring before in my time covering OU football. But with Twitter and message boards, the turmoil tends to seem bigger than it really is.
Isn't it an indictment of Brent Venables abilities as D-cordinator that he is still on OU's staff. All the good assistiants that he came to OU with have all been long gone to HC jobs. Has BV even been a finalist for a HC job?
That's not entirely fair. Brent has only agreed to interview for high level jobs (Clemson, Arkansas). He has been picky, and that's one of the main reasons he's still an assistant.
Much like Calvin Newell leaving the team for 'family issues', do you feel Brandon Williams' issues and reasonings are legitimate?
What on earth is going on with the Sooners that there's this much attrition in the ranks? Is Bob cleaning house? Is there a new direction that came out of nowhere?
A lot of cleaning house. Stoops is getting rid of some of the attitude problems, and also trying to improve the overall talent level.
What in the world is OU going to do at TE next season?
A lot of four wide sets.
What minor shakeups do you predict?
For one, an overhaul of the roster. Sooners need to get deeper, and I think that's why you see them going after so many JUCOs. OU didn't have enough guys available to play this year and it showed.
Have any walkons been given scholarships for next season?
Does the Big 12 have next years schedule out yet? Do we play TCU there? Is there a chance they move that game to Cowboys Stadium?
No schedule out yet. I don't see that with TCU. If OU plays in Cowboys Stadium, I would expect it to be an out of conference game, like BYU in 2009.
That's it for the chat this week. We'll do it again next Monday. Same time, same place. Everyone have a wonderful holiday week.
