Hi all. welcome to our weekly Hawks chat. Happy Holidays. One final game before the christmas break. Should be a good one tonight...great finish last night in pitt. I just got back..plenty to talk about...so fire away with questions!!
Do you think Pirri is next in line for a call-up? Do you see him as a viable 2nd line Center? 31 points in 28 games as a 20-year old would suggest he deserves a shot (IMO.)
I predict he is. LOL. They recalled this morn which doesnt sound like good news for Kruger..waiitng to hear severity..could just be precaution with 4 days off or could be more serious...but pirri will play tonight...assume right in there on 2nd line but not necessarily..kane finished at center...but I think he will center for hossa/sharp...just a guess
2 and 7 are still playing too many minutes. Q does not have confidence in 6 and 20, so they seldom dress. Monty's play is spotty at best. Is is fair to say that Stanbo's patches to the defense have been disappointing?
Well, maybe. I dont think they expected the world out of the bottom three guys...MOntador is another story..they expected a lot . and spotty is a good word to use..luckily they have the assests to fix that "mistake" if thats what you want to call it. Book it, the hawks will get a d-man, just a matter of good he is..top 4-5 or a better 6-7...
Crow or Emery tonight?
It'll be Crow
No hearing for Deryk Engelland? What gives here?
Almost positive they will...dont have to do it till tomorrow...has to be before next game which is friday for pens...will be shocked if there isnt a hearing AND supplemental punishment which in this case would be the sole punishment, right?!?
The 6+ million cap money is burning a hole in my pocket. How soon do we spend it, and who do we spend it on?
I dont think too soon unless a deal (Carolina?) falls into their lap...record is fine..no reason to jump too soon...with these weird head injuries Id wait as long as I can and make sure my needs are filled come time...spend it all on a d-man and two centers go down, youre in trouble so I say wait, all things being equal
I'm sure everyone has asked already, and that was OBVIOUSLY a head hit, but why didn't engelland get a 4 or 5 min major??!! If Borque got ejected the other night.....I don't get it
Simple. The refs missed it.
Seems like the Hawks are in the best division in hockey, no? 3 teams with 40+ points and another knocking on the door. And if you go by the new realignment for next year they'd have an even tougher conference. Makes for great hockey, doesn't it?
For sure but lets take look ahead. A year from now Minny could be bad and Columbus good..point being every year things change but right now, with St. Louis resurgence, central is tough
Do you see John Scott continue to be in the lineup for the rest of the season and what aspect of his game other than being an enforcer on the ice would give him more playing time?
I think he'll be in and out just like he is now...barring a trade I guess which I just said they're going to do at some point...but he still might find time on 4th line...he just cant get scored on, simple as that..as long as he's playing positinal hockey and moving the play forward and being physical of course, Q likes him and will use him
Kane said at the beginning of the season that he wanted to elevate his play to the next level. Based on his stats which are about the same as they have been since his NHL career this far into the season, do you think he has another level? I think his defense has improved this year but it seems he's taken off the puck a lot. Thoughts?
Well, started off pretty good at center. Ironically, moving back to wing, he's been quieter. They were right about one thing, he had the puck more at center..as for elevating, maybe not. He was great and now just good or ok so we'll see...I basically judge him on points. not many I do that with but with him I do and he's lagging a little..
Why is it that the Blackhawks aren't a hard-hitting team? Is it just something that the coaching staff doesn't stress enough or is it more due to the nature of the players themselves? You'd think with the size of some of the guys on the team, they'd be more willing to take the body more often.
They're style is puck posession in the mode of the red wings...det is as "soft" as they come byt the strictest definition but they still get it done..diff ways for diff teams...with 19,88,81,10..its more finesse than muscle..of course those bottom guys could bring it as well but even they (bolland, etc) are best with the puck if you know what I mean...fine line but its just not them...21-9-4, pretty good, no matter what the style
In your opinion is #27 going to get a fair shot, or will this be like the chance ( VERY UN-FAIR ) that Ben Smith got.
I think he had a better one than smith and did very little in 2 games there...look how that line took off when stalberg was added last night...not morin's fault..why he was put there coming off suspension in the minors and not having been in the nhl in like a year was weird..he should have been brought along not thrown to the lions (kane/toews). mistake by Q there...looks like hes still here and will play so by definition he's getting a shot
Why did Scott and bickel get 17 min penalities . 5 for fighting , 2 for instigator? Why the misconduct?
Was just Scott...not Bickell...its two min (against the team) for instigating 10 more against the player, and then the normal 5 for fighting...it is beyond stupid thats the rule...
For a team that is missing it's best player due to concussion symptoms, Pittsburgh sure seemed to be looking for a lot of kill shots last night, leaving their feet on checks and leading with elbows and forearms. Do you think it's time for an NFL-style crackdown on headshots or is this all going to remain "part of the game" with players "policing themselves?"
Heck if I know. No one has the answer to this problem...No one. Players keep saying they have to police themselves and then they dont...Going to ask Toews about htis before the game..wheres the policing..i think he'll have a good opinion on it...or at least an intense one. lol. ..we'll talk to him before tonights game and get his take but the ONLY real answer is to throw the book at these guys but then you'll change the game permanently cause everyone will be SO timid to go hit a guy..I just dont know..
Any chance the Hawks could/would trade Hammer? He's bad - doesn't pass or move the puck particularly well, gets moved off the puck too easily in the corners. He's become a high paid Sopel - all he's good at is blocking shots. A lot of money for a shot blocked.
Cant compeltely agree with your assesment..and until you show me a better replacement I cant go with your idea either...leading the league in blocks is worth something though I do think/wish he could do more...maybe he cant...I do think youd miss him because top 4 guys dont grow on tress...hes got the wheels and he can be solid in his own end but he's not perfect..guess what Im saying is you could do worse...not a ringing endorsement i know
Not white this December! Jesse, I have been pushing for the team to make a trade for a goalie, ie, Brodeur? We have a shot at winning the Cup again this year, but not with the current net minders we have. What are your thoughts going forward? I imagine we will see Craw tonight??
You cant make that assesment..I heard the same thing (even worse!) in 2009-2010...long way to go..if they need one we'll know by feb. Crawford proved something in last years playoffs and thats worth something and emery--if he can hold up--is pretty experienced...I dont agree with you, right now at least
Going on espn 1000 in a min..so tune in and Ill comeright back to answer questions...sorry for delay but multi platform hockey talk isnt a bad thing!
I will stay till 1:30 for questions so dont go anywhere..lets slide one more in
Which radio show do you like better on ESPN 1000? Waddle and Silvy or Carm, Jurko, and Harry?
Jonathan Hood at night...real answer is whoever talks more hockey!
Ok, radio time...be back in a few. tune in to espn 1000!!
Ok, Im back...thanks for being patient..hopefully you tuned in..good concussion talk
Hey Jesse, with the call-up of Pirri. I don't really know anything about him. Can you describe what kind of player he is and what we should expect from him with the big club?
Offensive oriented...little suspect in own zone..thats why he was sent back and not heard from until now...the hawks have enough offense, kruger was better on defensive end...but nice upside on offense...prob a better playmaker at this moment than kruger so could be interesintg if he plays 2nd line
What do you make about Toews "no comment" after last night's game? What do you think was his biggest frustration after the 3rd period rally coming up short?
Total guess, and it was no big deal really, but I think he's frudtarted with the high hits..again, total guess just from deduction cause he talks after almost every "regular" loss...will get a chance before the game today to ask..Im just thinking of what was out of ordinary last two games..those high hits
Jesse, why didn't Eddie O make the broadcast last night?
Cause versus is dumb. No, I dont know. They have a rotation of studio and game and it was his night for studio
Jesse, did you see Seabs after the game? How was he? It looked like he may have gotten hurt blocking a shot at the end-wasn't on the ice the last 2 minutes.
Did see him. He looked ok, maybe sore but he was moving around alright
So, the ony thing I can think is the hawks thought they were in Phoenix, not Pittsburg last night, hence them starting two hours later than the Pens. Any insight from Q or the team?
I know its an excuse but that whole sequence with kruger took the life out of them and then they took a bunch more penalties...but man that third period was fun to watch..I know Q is a momentum guy and whoever scores first is big anyway, so when all that happened and then they scored it just sucked life out of hawks for too long...
With a strong performance by Craw tonight, does he get another start or does Q stick with Ray? It seems 2 of the 3 goals last night he couldn't do anything about, so I still think he's playing exceptional.
IMO, if craw has reg type of game, win or lose he'll start on monday...now if he gets blasted or looks really bad, maybe not...but I think he gets hos shot again starting now...always subject to change of course
Now that Sharp has a family, has the practical jokes in the locker room and hotels fell off or has anyone else on the team picked up the slack?
Good question. havent asked but i imagine it has slowed down cause he has expressed a desire to get some sleep on the road now!
Can you elaborate on Q's response to Kruger being tapped to go out for a shift(s) in the second but not going over the boards? In your opinion was he saying that Kruger was scared to go over the boards or was the concussion creating confusion so he wasn't aware he was being called for s shift? Either way it's scary and I assume Q meant that he wasn't aware he was having his name called for a shift.
I just answered that on radio...was unclear..dont think Kruger was scared...think maybe they thought he was ok but before he could take a shift or what not, they realized he wasnt? that has to be clarified some before tonights game.
What should we expect from Crow tonight? Is the team going to play with confidence with him in net or feel like they need to do what ever it take to make sure pucks do not get to the net?
The team isnt going to care who is in net...I know its buff but he used to tell me he didnt know who was in goal until the game started..they'll play the same or at least try to..have no idea what to expect out of crow...no crystal ball here...he's fresh, that cant hurt, hopefully not rusty..fine line
Why did Scott get an instigating penalty? I looked at the replay and the Pit player knew that he made an illegal hit and that Scott was going to fight him. He jumped at John right when Scott skated over there. How is that instigating? Also, please explain to me why Scott was able to continue playing. He went to the locker room so I thought he was finished. Why was he allowed back in?
Yeah, ref added another layer to bad call...should not have been in my opinion but they will say scott jumped in on a play he had nothing to do with and started a fight as opposed to two guys squaring off when one asks another...engelland knew he was about to fight...should have let it go just like they let the hit go...he went to dressing room cause there was 11 min left in period and he had 17 min of penalty time so no need to sit in box...
Just came across from NHL, there will be hearing for Engelland...has to happen before friday night...so we know hes getting punished...good
Jesse - Great job covering the Hawks! Merry Christmas! Can we put coal in Shannahan's stocking (along with other items) if he doesn't suspend Engelland?
He will...this is one of those they are exactly trying to eliminate...
Jesse, - from your blog earlier:?I don?t know what we were playing like in the first 40 minutes,? Viktor Stalberg said. ?We basically handed them two points tonight. We have to play like we did in the third for the full game. It?s simple as that.?I?ve watched every game this year and this team turns it on when they want to, ie Anaheim. Now, how do we get that consistent 60 minutes of magic out of them all the time? As fans we need to ask this question. Is it just a matter of us having to sit and wait for playoff time to see the switch turned on?
Like I said before that hit changed things..they're human. You can think you're competing but youre not...and then the switch goes back on...If i could explain it Id be coaching..we see it in the playoffs cause they know every shift matters I guess...but yeah, we'll prob see them come out flying tongiht and wonder where that was
Jesse - can we give John Scott a little bit of love here today? If I had a nickel for every time someone on this chat bagged on him, I could retire. He came to defense of his teammate IMMEDIATELY last night. And on a late 3rd period breakaway, he positioning prevented a goal. I don't want the guy playing Duncan Keith minutes, but he is far and away the least of the Hawks' problems! Can I get an AMEN?!?!
Sure. He's gotten better and really hasnt been burned in a long, long time...are there some hairy moments in the hawks zone, yes. but that 3rd d-pai and 4th line and have played well lately...have no real issue with him as long as Q plays him so minutes dont pile up for others..either dress him and play him or sit him..lately, been playing some
Do you know if Carcillo has a concussion? Was his head injury from the fight, the cheap elbow he took, or something else?
One of those...pretty sure the fight..is it a diagnosed concussion? dont know but concussion like symptoms works for me...so basically, yes
Jesse, doing a great job, buddy. What do you think it would cost to get a Gleason or Vishnovsky to solidify our blueline? A morin, Olsen, etc? Thanks.
It would two of something...a prospect and a draft pick or two prospects..or bickell as the 2nd guy or something like that...for an older d-man, would take just one player or pick but in prime or near prime would take combo of two
What role/responsibility do you think coaches have in curbing hits to the head? Wouldn't it be helpful if a coach held his own player publicly responsible rather than thrying to have his back like Bylsma last night?
yes, yes, yes, yes...and pitt did it with cooke last yr i believe...I can understand--maybe--keeping it close to the vest last night but once the punishment is handed down, Bylsma should be more definitive about how he thinks its bad...
There doesn't seem to be much news out there on the CBA negotiations coming up. Have you heard anything about what people are expecting (meaning do insiders generally believe there's a meaningful chance of a strike / lockout or is the feeling that one of those was enough and something will get done)?
Has been quiet...both sides are readying their "troops". I have not gotten an indication that a work stoppage could take place but Donald Fehr is very cunning and smart so he might be keeping a lid on things...the cap is already there so unless trying to rid of that, it comes down to splitting the pie. hard enough to fig out but I think they will be ok...from afar at least
hey jesse the league needs to define what they want the refs to call.missed call last night cost us at least one point. if proper call made scott dont fight and we get at least two maybe five minute power play. the league cant have it both ways we lost the game and our second line center sucks. thanx happy holidays. ps are the refs allowed to look at replay to see the hit ( if player left his feet etc.)
Refs cannot use replay to look at hit...scott still would have fought...proper call would have been a penalty on engelland and nothing on scott or at least both get one, etc. went against hawks in every way..the fact that engelland is getting a hearing tell you what the league thinks of the non-call...the refs blew it
Jesse - Would you feel better about Kane centering the 2nd line or having Pirri do it? I know it looks like Pirri will be tonight but I'm not so sure this isn't just a Morin-like experiment that won't turn out so hot
tough call...i would let pirri start there...should know quick if he can handle both ends then proceed..not like thier married to it..
Over/Under 5, Number of years someone not named Chicago or Detroit wins our new conference
Jesse, I know you're going to be hammered with questions about the whole Kruger/Engelland/Scott fiasco. I just have to ask, why can't a head shot be a head shot? Period. Just like high sticking? It doesn't matter if the player intentionally high sticks a player. It's high sticking regardless. This whole head shot deal is being so poorly handled by the NHL. They need to get their heads checked.....pun intended.
Its supposed to be...its in the rules now..if the head is targeted or first point of contact (without a last sec move by victim which causes the hit) then its a penalty...kruger didnt turn into it or anything...he for sure will be suspeneded..no doubt in my mind (i think!)
the PK continues to be a problem. they need to be more aggressive on the puck before it gets into the offensive zone on the PK, put pressure on the puck in the other 2 zones. they are too willing to give up the zone, and they then allow the opponents to just move the puck and blast away from the points, and most of the PKs are spent in the Hawks zone with their players standing and watching in a passive 4 man box. the PK strategy does not mesh well with the Hawks personnel and talent. what say you?
My big issue is with the shooting lanes they tend to give up when its going bad..I dont get it..I know they dont want to give up the middle of the ice but these "bad" angle shots arent all that bad...and as long as they reach the net it start up the shasing in front...rebounds are good for the offensive team cause no one knows where that puck is going to go (inlcuding the goalie ) and pp team has the extar man to finish the job so to speak..so thats my concern..plus those point shots are going as well
Hey Jesse. What second line center do you think the Hawks will try and get and what will it take to get him?
Dont know...Olli Jokinen? I keep using that name just to tick people off.
Hawks talk with Jesse Rogers. Weekdays 1-2 on ESPN 1000!
Now youre talking...ya know we did a bears thing online from 1-2 on mondays, maybe we can at least do that..will look into...online better than nothing!
Watching 24/7: Rangers/Flyers made me wonder: do the Blackhawks have a specific post-win song that they blast in the dressing room?
Not that Ive heard or i dont pay attention to..music is playing when the press goes in but dont think its the same song...will ask the great PR man Brandon Faber...He'll know...
Do you agree at all with your colleague Tim Sassone that it makes it a little harder to be sympathetic to Pittsburgh and their injury plight when they have a bad tendency to leave their feet on hits and take cheap shots? Would never wish Crosby's predicament on anyone, but it's rather hypocritical of Pitt to cry out against head shots and demand more justice yet they play like that.
Well yeah a little bit..but i dont expect a penguin to be thinking of crosby when he goes in for a hit BUT I do expect them to be more sensitive after the fact...show some compassion and be contrite for an obvious head shot...
What are they going to do with Morin? He got dropped to the 4th line yesterday. Will he bounce back and be up with the top 6 again or is this the start of musical chairs with him and Smith between Chicago and Rockford?
i think he stays in bottom 6 for now and maybe back to rockford..just my opinion...if smith is playing well down there maybe he'll be back..but carcillo is coming back soon we think so lineup will be kind of full
any chance of them trying to get a bigger body in the line up
Scott not big enough for you?
Are we EVER going to see a call for diving? NHLers are flopping almost as much as NBAers. Brutal.
Was thinking about that last night..they dont call it much anymore...thought kane maybe could have been called there at the end of game but wasnt sure..
It's clear Patty Kane should be a center. Needs the puck. Incredible with it. Get him back there. Thoughts?
I think it could happen..may as well use kruger absence..never thought we'd think hes better at center than wing..still think pirri start there tonight...they like 2 and 2 as in 2 stars on each line...if you move kane than you move sharp or hossa and those two have been great together...think 19,25,88 is just fine...so would go that route to start
Did you invite Big Buff to your family Christmas?
yes, but he's not coming.
That's a joke.
Thats it for today...make sure you check out blog later for update info..going to talk to Chris Campoli before the game today aloing with pirri and toews/Q so plenty of pregame stuff...campoli with the canadians now...follow me on twitter @espnchihawks for all the latest...hopefully get something about severity of kruger today...goto the blog 24/7 for all your hawks info! thanks for the questions, great stuff. talk next week and enjoy the holidays...
