Welcome back to the chat... I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season. This is the next to last one for the year. Fire away.
Why do all the NFL great Pa natives not attend Penn State, Example Eddie George,Joe Montana, Joe Namath,Mike Ditka
You can't keep everybody. Penn State has done well over the years.
USC lost 30 scholarships over 3 years...Ohio St loses 9 over 3 years. It seems like the "cover up" was more prevalent at Ohio St...yet once again a Big Ten team gets off with a wrist slap. A 1 year bowl ban won't hurt recruiting at all. Ohio St basically got off the hook with "window dressing" penalties and it's funny to see Ohio St officials and Meyer act like they've been hammered. Alabama got worse for kids giving text books to their friends!
The NCAA has favorites and one of them is the Big Ten. I am not Ohio State should not lose nine scholarships, but what happened to USC was a disgrace. What happened at USC is a lot worse than what happened at Ohio State. The NCAA is a lot softer on the Big Ten than any other conference.
Beano were you freindly with Mr Paterno ?
Yes, I was friendly with hi. Over the years, I interviewed him several times, I interviewed his wife, so yes, I would say so. By the way, Happy Birthday Joe, number 85 today.
Could we have your updated address so we know where to send your W-2? Thanks.
Notre Dame would not agree with your assinine statement.
Beano, did Urban Meyer make a mistake going to OSU given the sanctions?
No, I don't think so. I do not believe the sanctions are that tough. They only lose one bowl game. They can live with that.
What do you think about Mark Richt paying his assistants? What is wrong with that?
I agree with your observation, there are a lot worse things that the NCAA doesn't do anything about.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...and thanks for another great season of chats, Beano. You are the Voice of Reason. Question: What was the best bowl game that you ever attended? Which bowl game are you most looking forward to this year?
I appreciate the kind remarks. I am grateful for them, Mike. The best bowl game was the Sugar Bowl, which determined the 1973 national title, Notre Dame 24, Alabama 23. Outside of the championship game, I like the Stanford-Oklahoma State game. I would like to see the Michigan game if the band will make an appearance at the French Quarter. That is an important condition.
If Alabama wins Jan 9, it will tie Notre Dame for the most "major poll" national championships ever. What would be your top 3 bluest of the "blue blood" college programs?
That is tough to decide. I would have to give that some thought. Tough to leave Notre Dame out but considering the last 20 years...USC, Alabama and it is a toss-up for the third. People will disagree with USC and Alabama too. I really would have to study to decide, but it is an interesting question.
I think WV will win the Orange Bowl by 2 touchdowns. the pass rush will get after Boyd, and Smith will move the ball at will vs. the Clemson defense. Thoughts?
That is your opinion and you might be right. That is going to be an interesting game. I will make a bowl pick in next week's chat and then a championship game pick.
Beano, what do you think of the hire of Carl Pelini at FAU?
I don't have much insighton that. Howard Schnellenberger did a great job building the program from scratch. He is also the coach who brought Miami-Florida back as a national power. Certainly the job became attratcive enough to get Carl Pellini, so that says a lot.
Beano - If you were a highly ranked 18 year high school recruit with BAMA & LSU as your final 2 schools....would the winner of the BCS CG be the deciding factor in your choice or would you base your decision on more tangible items? Also as a recruit, which school would you choose?
If I lived in Alabama, I go to Bama. If I lived in Louisiana, I go to LSU. I would not care which team won the game. If I lived somewhere else, I would probably go to Alabama. If it was good enough for Sela Ward, it would be good enough for me.
Happy Holidays Beano, Did you ever meet Lou Holtz ?
Yes, I know him and like him very much.
Holtz does a very good job for ESPN and I like him in commercials. Love that credit card one too.
Who do you like in the Champs Bowl- the Irish or Seminoles?
I have not decided yet. I look at those games right after Christmas. Any bowl game before that doesn't get my full attention.
you answered a question last week about being on espn radio this coming saturday. would you have an approximate time so i can tune in to hear.thanks
This Saturday am I scheduled to be on at 7:30 am ET. I am on with John Kincaide. I will not be on this Sunday because of Christmas. Thanks for asking.
Your thoughts on the Pitt coaching search?
My opinion is he will hire an assistant coach from a major school. We will see what happens.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Beano! Do you think a 6-6 team should be bowl eligible?
Otherwise you would not have 35 bowls, which I do not think is that bad. A team can be 8-8 and make the NFL playoffs. NHL and NBA teams can make the postseason with a losing record.
Why is it you & the rest of the media decide one rule violation is acceptable
I did not say a rule violation is acceptable. I just think what people do is compare. Ohio State got off lightly in my opinion, while USC did not. I guess it depends on what rule was violated and how it was violated. Punishments should be equal to the crime, and I do not feel that was the case with USC.
Why no talk about Ty Willingham for the Penn State job ?
You have to ask penn State.
How much impact do bowl games have for team rankings entering the following season, if any? Where do you see Notre Dame's placement as being a ranked team?
A lot. I think it was in late 90s when Arizona pulled a big upset and then was ranked in the top five the next season. I think momentum is built up and it does matter the next season.
Mr. Cook, hypocrisy, thy name is the NCAA. Given the relative light penalties handed down to Ohio State, do the people at the university have incriminating pictures on those running the NCAA? Considering the penalties USC were given, I tend to be cynical and actually believe this was done to render the Big Ten competitive and Urban Meyer must have known this before he signed on to sign coach the team. It is a joke and about as comical as a "pre arranged matchup" between two SEC schools for the national title.
You are entitled to your opinion.
Beano, what troubling times we live in..In your wildest dreams did you ever think that Temple would be the best Division 1 football school in Pennsylvania? Also any thoughts on who should be the next Pitt football coach??Hail to Pitt!!!
No and they did lose to Penn Satte, 1-10, but Steve Addazio's team is pretty good.
Do you think the NCAA will ever get the Football Bowl Program right. In order to do this, you do not have to have a +1 or 8 team playoff just use the composite of rankings and drop all computer entities except Segarin in the compilation. That is close enough.Bowl Games are rewards for the season of play and not an extended program for playoffs. You have the playoffs in the NFL and that is good enough for today.Let the promoters go to the back of the bus and take what it is that is in the rankings and if this is not good enough then drop the bowl. It is that simiple.f
We have what we have and that is the way it is. Every year there is a debate and the bottom line is, we have 1 vs. 2 for the national title. We did not have that for many years.
Happy Holidays, Beano! Great job again on the podcast with Ivan today. Have you heard anything about the Penn State coaching search?
No, I have not heard much. Although they have a committee, I think two people will eventually make the decision -- AD Dave Joyner and a big money giver close to the football program in Eastern Pennsylvania...I forget his name, but you can call Neil Rodell at the Altoona Mirror. There are no leaks because there are really only two people involved in this search. Yes they will have to go in front of the committee, and they will.
Are you excited about the Pirates' acquisition of Erik Bedard?
He has been up an down. Needs to stay healthy. Always love those Pirate questions.
Stanford has made big splashes on the national scene for a few years then disappeared before. Will that happen again when Luck leaves or will they still be a good, competitive viable team in years to come?
It is a good chance it will happen again. Tough academics make it difficult to compete on a big-time level consistently.
Is RG3 going to come back next year? I don't know if I can win without him.
You have to ask him. I think it is a diifcult decision because he loves school, and I am not sure where he would be drafted, so he may be better off coming back.
Which is the better team in the championship game?
We will find out on the field, which is the beauty of the sport.
Hey, Beano - are you sorry to see Craig James leaving ESPN?
I did not know him well but I thought he was a valuable asset to ESPN. I wish him well in his race for the Senate. I do not know why he wanted to go to the Seante...if he thought there were a bunch of thieves in college football, wait until he gets to Washington!
Think my Sun Devils have a chance tonight?
No...the game is tomorrow...
Mr Cook have you seen a Curve game here in Altoona ?
No but my friends say it is a great place to see baseball.
beano...when will voters like yourself stop preseason ranking teams that always let down??? if all uga's players come back...where do you see them in 2012....
I would pick them to win the division, that is obvious. LSU will be loaded and Alabama loses a lot. Preseason rankings create interest and people like them. Let's face it, the only ones that count are at the end of the season. Where was Auburn ranked in the preseason last year? Barely in the top 25 I think. Who won the national title? You have preseason ratings by many in baseball and football...
Did you ever meet Lombardi?
Happy Holidays Mr Cook !Are there any legs to the rumor that Joe Paterno's son Jay will be named to replace Tom Williams who was run out of Yale for embellishing on his resume ?
I have no idea. The AD at Yale is a Pittsburgh graduate, by the way.
I do not think that will happen.
What do you think about the job Charlie Strong has done at Louisville so far?
He has done a very good job. It is not easy to win in Louisville in football and he got them into a bowl game. I give him a lot of credit.
What do you think the reception from the fan will be when Urban Myers new Ohio State team faces the Florida gators in Florida
Unfriendly. There will be a lot of Florida fans there. The only think they will clap for is when Ohio State's band dots the I!
Thanks for your questions. Happy holidays and see you next week at 3 pm ET...
