Hello everyone, let's get started
with 5 ee already do you think we land anymore if so who?
It sounds like things are set right now. It's still not clear if Bowman will enroll for spring or not, he's still waiting on some class grades. The SC coaches have assured him he would still have a spot in the fall.
I'm preemptively assuming Gerald Bowman commits to USC... so what do you think that means as far as TJ McDonald's decision is concerned? And even if TJ stays, could Bowman start at the other S spot?
Bowman did commit to USC today but I don't think it was made with the assumption of McDonald leaving. In fact, the rumblings this week are that T.J. is seriously considering staying. I think Bowman is necessary no matter what because the Trojans just don't know where the health of Drew McAllister will be and Demetrius Wright has yet to be a consistent performer. That means a lot of opportunity in the rotation for Bowman.
Does USC have two huge recruiting weekends set up in January or just one? Who are the major uncommitted players visiting?
The big weekend is being planned for January 13th. Some of the top uncommitted names include Andrus Peat, Zach Banner and D.J. Foster.
Which linemen (either side of the ball) that arent currently commited do you think will be a lock for USC?
I don't think Ellis McCarthy is a lock for USC but he is extremely important. If the Trojans can lock up McCarthy and Aziz Shittu along the d-line it would be a huge boost. On the offensive side, I think Zach Banner is the most likely of the remaining big 3 OT targets (Banner, Kyle Murphy and Andrus Peat).
I love WeAreSC and all articles. I have a hypothetical. Lets say Rogers signs with some other team and we get Nelson Agholor, which side of the ball do you think he would play. Personally, Id love to see him on D, but with no WR this year.....
Thank you for that. I don't see Rogers going anywhere, he is a major priority for this staff as the top receiver on their board. I do think if Agholor comes to USC that he would play receiver, he's one guy who is talented enough to make a run at since he continues to show interest in the Trojans.
What will be the total number of scholarships available for OSU combining the self imposed sanctions and the NCAA sanctions?
It is a total of nine scholarship restrictions over three years. If they balance it out, they would have 22 available scholarships for each of the next three years.
What DE do you think usc can get this recruting class now that spence commited to ohio state
I think the commit of the JC player Morgan Breslin today was very good. He brings a little experience, he can rush the passer (28 sacks over the past two years) and he had offers from schools such as UCLA, Arizona, Oregon State and Boise State. There is always a chance either McCarthy or Shittu could end up outside (although I think both will end up inside) and USC is also getting a visit from Tyriq McCord from Florida.
What is armond armstead status is he leaving usc, if stays do we have a chance to land his brother arik
Right now it looks like Arik is headed elsewhere. Cal is the latest top school for him but other schools like Washington, Oregon, Notre Dame and Auburn are still in the mix. Armond has said he will follow Arik wherever he goes so it doesn't look good for a return to USC.
Now in light of Ohio State's relatively light punishment. Is there anything USC can do in terms of appealing at least their scholarship reductions over the next 3 years?
You don't get the sense that there is any appetite for that right now within the USC administration. There was a lot of discussion about their options in August after the Miami/Dee allegations came out and lawsuits were considered but in the end the school decided not to do it. That seemed to be the end of it, at least for now.
Why can't USC's medical staff comment on the condition affecting Armand Armstead?
Patient privacy laws. The family is free to give out whatever information they want but they have chosen to keep the details private. It's a tough situation, it's not like anyone at USC wants to see Armond leave or to have Arik go somewhere else.
Has the coaching staff completely backed off of Kelvin York's recruitment?
Yes, he announced today that he will attend Utah
Do you think Lane Kiffin is a good coach and is capable of winning a national championship? Do you see him staying on as head coach for 10+ years?
Yes, I do think Lane has the ability to be a coach who could achieve those things. He showed a lot of progress this year in terms of proving that. A big key will be continuing to build on what he's done so far but he's a pretty young coach so he's got time to have a long and productive career. I don't see him leaving for another college job anytime soon but I wouldn't rule out him listening if the NFL comes calling with numbers that can't be ignored.
garry-what do you forecast for the next three years in terms of success given the scholarship reductions?
Cautiously optimistic right now. The good part is that the bowl ban is over as the team heads into the scholarship reduction part of the penalty. Don't underestimate how important it will be to play in a bowl for these players after being forced to sit out the past two years. They are going to be a very motivated team. It remains to be seen how the reductions will impact things in a year or two, especially if you lose a couple kids or just miss on some evaluations, but the Trojans are certainly well positioned for what lies ahead.
Do Peat and Murphy see Matt Kahil leaving as a big opportunity for them at OT
How could they not? You've got a school like USC with a wide open depth chart right now at left tackle. Those kind of opportunities don't come along too often.
Garry great day to be a trojan today, We have 5 early enrollies, are we done with Juco guys or early enrollies? Any names to keep an eye on?
As far as I know, things are done with juco guys. Today was a very good day for the Trojans to get Bowman and then pull in the surprise verbal from Breslin.
Garry, any guess as to what TJ and Barkley are thinking regarding NFL draft?
There are some good rumblings in recent days about the possibility of T.J. staying. He could really help his NFL draft stock by coming back for a senior year and he is genuinely taking that into account. There is still hope on Barkley but I wouldn't call it optimistic hope. Matt definitely understands what's at stake with coming back but he's also seriously considering the NFL option. He made a recent visit to Pete Carroll and the Seahawks for their Monday night game and it gave him an up close view of the league.
Is Shittu a risky commit because he seems to change his mind frequently?
I wouldn't say that. Aziz is a fun loving kid who is having his version of fun with the recruiting process. As far as his ability on the football field, there's no question about his play and he is a good one.
Hello Garry, great day for Trojan fans for far!
Agreed. It couldn't have gone much better for the Trojans.
Will the Trojans bring in at least one running back this year? D.J Foster comes to mind. Thanks, Garry.
That's a real interesting option to consider. Foster has said he doesn't care which side of the ball he plays on but you can tell he's intrigued with the ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. The Trojans got him to visit on the 13th next month and that offensive option could be enough to help land him. I think he's a real solid guy on either side of the ball. If they don't go that route, I would be surprised if they take another RB.
What recruits are leaning heavily towards SC and what position is of the up most importance to this recruiting class?
I think the two line spots are the most important priorities at this point, followed by corner. Ellis McCarthy could be considered a lean at this point and he would be a terrific get on the d-line. At corner, things look real good for Kevon Seymour.
Garry, two weeks ago I asked you that if you had one $10,000 chip, would you put it on "he stays" or "he goes." You said at the time "he stays." Still feel that way two weeks later?
No. I don't think it's a done deal either way but I would probably move my chip right now.
Do you feel that junior pomee is a special talent? from what i've been hearing on message boards he seems to be ultra talented and what position do you see him playing next year?
I think he's got some real potential, let's see how he develops. The physical skills just jumped out in the limited time we saw him in camp so you know he has ability. The tight end spot is going to be incredible for the next few years and I see Junior right in the middle of that.
Not familiar with the JuCo DE..is he a pass rusher or more of a run support guy?
Pass rusher, 28 sacks over the past two years.
Garry are we taking any more Juco guys or Early enrollies? Heard USC will take 6 and so far we only have 4?
I think things are done for the day. Kiffin had said two weeks ago that there could be 5-6 early enrollees. Right now there are five if you count Devante Wilson but it's still up in the air on Bowman in terms of whether or not he would enroll in the spring.
If T.J. leaves, who will start? Bowman or Drew?If T.J. Stays what will happen to Bowman?
If McDonald leaves, I think it would be a real good competition. I've got a lot of respect for Drew McAllister and have long wanted to see him get a real shot but Bowman seems to have some real skills and I wouldn't rule him out. If T.J. stays, Bowman could be used in a rotation at both safety spots (the USC coaches make all the safeties learn both spots).
Of the 11 commits so far, who do you think will be red-shirted?
Chad Wheeler is one name that jumps out. I think Pio Vatuvei would probably redshirt too. I would like to hope the Trojans could redshirt Cope-Fitzpatrick with the possibility of four other scholarship tight ends on the roster.
Garry, Could you imagine what Coach O would do if he watched the entire team "jump the wall" during bowl prep?
Haha, no. That would not go over well with Orgeron.
What is the status of Kevon Seymour?
The last I heard he plans to announce at the Army game and it's still looking good for the Trojans over Washington and Cal.
Have you heard much on whether Bowman will be accepted in January or May? It sounds like he admitted it's up in the air, which is never a good sign as recruits tend to be over confident in that area.
He was pretty open today about the fact that it's still up in the air. The USC coaches told him they don't care, he still has a spot in the fall even if he can't get here for spring.
In the event Barkley leaves...Do you think Lane waits until Fall Camp to name a starter in part to delay any potential QB transfers until after the season?
No, I think he would name someone at the end of spring. It is a risk, for the reasons you bring up, but I think most coaches like to have a starter name as they head into summer workouts.
I know Mario Edwards is supposed to visit USC, do we actually have chance? That would be amazing!
I wouldn't call it a good chance. The SC coaches are taking a shot, you definitely aren't going to get him if you don't try and they are trying.
With UCLA coming hard after Simmons and Tuerk do you think those guys still end up at USC?
Yes, I think both of those guys are solid to USC.
I dont think McCarthy is a big loss if he flips...has anyone considered the HS weak/inferior competition he faces in his league?
I think most people take into account the level of competition but McCarthy also held his own from a physical standpoint at a national event like the Opening.
How do transfers count into the scholarship mix? Does signing a JC recruit count towards the 15 as well, or just count towards the overall 75?
They would count either against the 15 or, if they come in spring, it's possible they could count against the previous year. either way, they will definitely count against the 75 too.
How important do you feel it is to get a power back in each of the next two classes?
Very important. I think the loss of Kelvin York is a big one because he was a bigger back and an early enrollee. That would have been perfect for the Trojans.
Garry, please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe we signed 21 players towards last year's class so does that mean 1 of the 5 EE's will count towards our 15 in 2012? Or can all 5 still count towards 2011 and only effect the 75? Thanks!
My read is the same as your first part, that only four of them can count against 2011.
wats the word on tee shepard? how bout kevon seymour?
USC made a strong run this weekend at Tee Shepard and Deontay Greenberry but it doesn't look like the sales pitch worked. Seymour is expected to announce at the Army game and I like the Trojans chances.
If MB does leave, who starts the first game next year at QB?
It will be a great spring competition but if I have to pick now I will go with Wittek.
Is Khaled Holmes staying for another year?
garry,i been hearing barkley is looking at coming back for the title run,but i also heard as of last week pete carroll and his people been trying to talk to matt and his family letting them know they will do what ever it takes to draft him??
Carroll hosted Barkley last week at the Seahawks Monday night game. It's like recruiting all over again for Barkley.
Do you see the Trojans at least having a shot at either McCord or Leonard Williams out of Florida? THANKS
I think it's a slim shot on both players. If USC has a shot at anybody out of Florida, I'm going to guess Nelson Agholor.
Garry, Is there a front runner for the LT spot? Walker or Hobbi? Maybe one of the freshmans. Tuerk or Simmons? Thanks.
I think either Walker or Graf will get the first look. There has been talk of Holmes as well but I'm guessing he stays at center. I do find it interesting that the coaches are now telling Tuerk that he will come in as a tackle, they were talking guard prior to the season.
Which commits are early enrollees?
Scott Starr, Chad Wheeler, Devante Wilson and Morgan Breslin. It's still unclear if Gerald Bowman will enroll for spring or fall.
CLK has a DB coach vacancy. I know you like Sammy Knight to be considered for the permament position. I heard Lane is searching for a coach with NFL ecperience. Any canfifate that you are hearing about? Is Tony Hughes ot Wesley McGriff available?
Tim McDonald is one name we've heard although he doesn't have any NFL coaching experience. I have no complaints with the job that Sammy Knight did with the USC defensive backs this year, would love to see him get the full-time job.
garry, we don't have any OOS commits so far. Do you think we will end up with anybody OOS and if so who is the most likely?
I'm going to put Zach Banner as the most likely, followed by Nelson Agholor.
Hey Garry, I know recruiting is the big thing right now, but can you give me the your top five redshirts or small role players who you think will have a big impact next year? Thanks!
Soma Vainuku, George Farmer, Aundrey Walker, JR Tavai, Anthony Sarao and Anthony Brown.
What is the statues on Shaq Thompson now that the trojans have Bowman?
I'd be very surprised if Shaq ends up anywhere but Cal.
Garry, since we were not taking a QB in this class, who do you see the Trojan's looking at in the 2013 QB class and is there a mutual interest from the QB's on our radar?
Some early names are Hayden Rettig (Cathedral), Troy Williams (Narbonne), Johnny Stanton (Santa Margarita) and Max Browne (Skyline, WA).
Thanks everyone, that's going to be it for today. Happy Holidays to all.
