Had to leave the comforts of my home office for the ESPNDallas studios cause I'm doing radio on 103.3 FM with Nate Newton after the chat. We can talk Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs and whatever else you want. Robin Thicke, Anthony Hamilton and Faith Evans in the head phones. Let's roll.
JJT, why does this Dallas team lack that killer instinct? they have Lee, Ware, Rattliff...and yet they don't play like monsters when they HAVE to...I bet Pierre Paul is going to be a beast on Sunday Night... I just hope I am wrong?
That's a good question, a legitimate question. The problem, of course, is that there's no answer - only theories. My theory: This team doesn't have enough ruthless winners. They don't have guys who can impose their will on a game and take the team where it wants to go. The Cowboys of the 90s had a lot of guys like that. Understand, it doesn't always have to be the best player. James Washington is a guy who would impose his will on a game and he wasn't the best player. Jason Terry does it for the Mavs. These guys don't fear the moment. The embrace it and relish it. Not enough Cowboys do. It's why they seemingly crumple at every big moment. They find creative ways to lose more than they find ways to win.
Dear Jean-JaquesDid Tex Schram ever petition for the Minority Clause?
I don't know. I'm not that old. I was in college when the Landry Era ended.
How do you think that the Dallas Mavericks Look This Season?
Pathetic. Awful. Abject. Sorry. Out of shape. Disinterested. Fat and happy. I could go on and on. The losses don't bother me. The Lakers are 0-2. The Mavs were 0-4 the year they won 67 games and they were 2-7 in Carlisle's first season. The problem is the Heat and the Nuggets have each had 30-point leads. Ridiculous. The defense has been a complete joke. That's not all on Tyson Chandler. The effort has been sub-par.
Two part question here JJT, 1) Will the Cowboys look to free agency for DB, OG, and C help in the off season? 2) Not counting Kitna, name 5 players that will not be on the roster next season. Happy New Year to you and your family!
I don't look at FA or the draft until the last possible minute. I did enough of that as a beat guy for 11 years to last a lifetime. Sorry. As for five guys who won't be here next year: Newman, Elam, Bennett, Holland, James, Brooking, Spencer
Will the cowboys make major changes after the season?
they should, but I thought this was a rebuilding year from the start. I had them pegged as 8-8 so whether they win or lose on Sunday I'm in the ballpark. This team doesn't have enough dynamic players on defense.
who has a bigger games sunday our WR vs there WR? D Ware vs JPP?
I'd go with JPP right now. He was a force who couldn't be stopped the last time. The Giants have some championship players. Their coach has a title. They know how to dial it up for one game.
JJT Happy New Year to you and your family!!!Please give me 3 reasons why you think Dallas could win against the GiantsThanks
Thank you. I don't think they will win, but if you're looking for ways they could win I'd say: 1) Romo picks their secondary apart again; 2) Ron Ryan creates some trickery that fools Eli and harasses him into mistakes; 3) They hold the Giants to less than 50 yards rushing
I wouldn't think so. Opposing QBs have 1,600+ passing with 9 TDs and 3 INTs along with a 98.0 passer rating in the past 6 games. Eli has gone over 300 passing in four of his last five against the Cowboys.
Given the success that (primarily) pass catching TEs like Graham and Gronkowski have been having, why don't the princeton-educated Garrett design plays for Witten to run more routes in the middle causing havoc, and keep the rushing linebackers to stay back? Also, whatever happened to screen plays? A few screen plays here and there would make a good pass rushing team like the G-men to be play honest and stay back for the fear of giving up a huge play?
They've run quite a few screens. Among tight ends Witten is among the leaders in catches of more the 20 yards, catches and receptions. Dallas has more problems with their running game and defense than Witten and passing
Happy Holidays Mr. Taylor......Die hard Cowboys Fan...lifelong realist....don't think the Cowboys are ready. Is it wasted talent or are they just not that good?
They're mediocre to me. I've viewed them like that since the season began and they've done nothing to change my mind
jean boy do i miss the 90's cowboys what can jerry jones do to bring the cowboys back to the form i got the history of dallas cowboys for christmas i hated losing.
Dallas needs more dynamic players on defense
I have to give you credit. Youve said all season long that you saw a mediocre 8-8 team here and its one loss away from seeing that happen...i agree with you and i just dont see this defense rising to the occasion Sunday.. and the Eagles game didnt give me any confidence....in your opinion, do the Cowboys need to play a "perfect" game to come out with a win Sunday?
no, but they have to find a way to stop the running game and the big plays. Do that and they can win. Personally, I don't think this game has anything to do with talent. It has to do with heart and character and desire. How bad do you want it? Are you willing to sacrifice everything this week and sunday to win? Will you know your opponent better than he knows himself? Can you handle the emotion during the game and focus on doing your job, which is a fancy way for saying will you maintain your composure and poise? Normally, the Cowboys fail those types of tests
Happy Holidays JJT to you and your family! My question to you is a very hard one for me to shallow, mind you I have been a Cowboys fan for 34 years! Would the Cowboys be better off losing this game, which would improve their draft status or win this match up with the Giants, go to the playoffs , and be 1 an done? JJT, Let's be honest here. You never bite your tongue. I need your words of wisdom! Happy New Year!!!
You're never better off losing. You're always better going to the playoffs.
What's cracking JJT? How was your Christmas? on a scale of 1 - 100, what chances do you give the Cowboys of pulling the upset? Although you didn't ask, I give them a 40% chance which mean that they have to be +2 in the turnover battle. Agree/disagree?
25 percent chance of winning. They can feel free to prove me wrong. I won't be mad.
I feel like Newman has to be gone next year and Idon't think Jenkins can stay healthy with his style of reckless play. Is Corner the cowboys number one priority in the offseason?
They have a lot of needs. CB, Guard, Center, OLB, safety, backup QB
Philly has Babin opposite Cole.NYG has 3 good pass rushers in Osi, JPP, and Tuck. Wash has Orapko and Kerrigan. How come you, Broaddus, Tim McMahon, and Graziano think that shouldn't be priority #1 in the draft?Spencer is NOT a compliment to Ware!thoughts?
dude, it's too early for the draft. The Cowboys need a pass-rusher at OLB. In the 3-4, the defensive ends are strictly run-stoppers
If the defense fails again against the Giants, will Rob Ryan be out?
maybe. It depends on how it happens. Sometimes, it's the players - not the scheme. In this case, it's both.
Plz tell me why cant the Cowboys look at the big picture, the Superbowl. I'll bet everything that Romo isn't & is never gonna be a superbowl qb..It seems the owner, Mr. Jones is blind by Romos charm, but charm doesn't win games....
Romo has 18 tis and 2 interceptions in the last 7 games. He has 22 tis and 4 picks in the last 11 games. He's really the least of the Cowboys' worries.
Would you roll with Stephen McGee as the #2 for 2012 after watching him on SAT?
Absolutely not. He's a NO.3 to me. That's not a slam. A good No.3 is a guy who won't lose the game. You need a No.2 to win a game
What impact will Romo's hand have on Jason Garrett's playcalling?
none. Romo should be fine
Hey JJT, every year its the Cowboys this the Cowboys that you guys are like the Chargers, Ravens, Redskins, face it the one word to describe your team and the others aforementioned OVERRATED!!!!!If I read one more writer that says Romo is better than Eli I think I will barf.
You got a bag handy...lol..Romo is having a terrific year. He's been virtually flawless since the Lions' game.
Hey JJT, I was watching some old highlights of Roy Williams (safety not WR) last night and it hit me that even though he wasn't great his last few years with the Cowboys he did bring intensity and toughness to the defense that hasn't been there since he left. Do you think bringing in tough defenders should be the top priority this offseason and if yes how would you go about doing it?
You need guys who can play whether they're or not, so to speak, is irrelevant. It would be nice if the Cowboys could find a physical defensive player who could bring the pain. But right now, you'd probably be happy with a guy who knew what to do
So did Rob Ryan lose it in the locker room at halftime vs PHI? He's finally fed up. After how they played for Wade last year and Rob this year, the D clearly needs alot of changes. I don't see any reason to think they play well vs the Gmen.
JJT does it just SEEM like the hamstring and groin pulls are way more prevelant than they used to be? Is it related to NFL players concentrating more on strength and building muscle mass. There is no denying players are bigger and stronger than ever.
you're correct, but I don;t know the answer. I'm sure it has something to do with the lockout and the types of conditioning the players did. They might've been in shape, but not football shape
Cowboys will win. And all the haters need to shut up. because that is why they play all the game. In Romo we Trust even if u Mr. Taylor do not think so at times. Even if they do not win , it has been a better season then last year and it has been a wild ride but fun.
OK, but let's stop with all the hater talk. It ain't hating. It's a fact that this is an average team. That's why it's 8-7. So to expect them to go on the road and win against a division rival that beat them 2 weeks ago is not out of the ordinary. It's normal. All this hating on the Cowboys is pure copout. It's their fault they're 8-7.
If the defense/secondary wasn't so bad. I think the Cowboys could win this game going away. But reality is a sobering thing. Do you really think Rob Ryan has enough pieces to slow their running game and stop the big plays?
It's really tough when you enjoy watching other teams more than you do your team. Even if the Cowboys manage to make it into the playoffs....I don't see them going very far. How would you address changing the mindset in the locker room and instilling that mental toughness and killer instinct?
It all comes down to better players. There's no secret formula. The Cowboys need more game-changers on defense.
1-2, but it's hard to say. That's as hypothetical at it gets. He wouldn't have had any impact on Garrett's time management gaffes and his team is 7-8.
I agree that Romo has been playing lights out. However, what matters here is a win. Can Romo pull an Eli Manning and will his team to win, even though those around him aren't playing well? I think this game is the biggest of his career honestly if you think about it like that.
I don't know. We'll see. The reality is the Cowboys could lose and it might not be Romo's fault. What if he was 24 for 28 for 379 yard 5 TDs and on interceptions and they lost 42-35 on a last-second TD drive by Eli Manning
Anybody seeing the practice today? Romo throwing?
players off on Tuesdays
Is Rob Ryan overrated or he just doesn't have the talent?
How can I get Norv Turner as my O.C. next year?
I don't know if Jason wants to give up the offense. He'd fight it, I think.
Who might replace Campo next year????
no idea. It depends on what other coaches are available. We won't know that until we see who gets fired
He took over a 1-7 team. His D that he doesn't run is a liability. His made clock mgt errors. Overall though, since this was a rebuilding year, has he laid the foundation for success going fwd?
I think so. He's a good coach, I think. He's making the types of rookie mistakes that coaches make. It comes with the territory when you have a new coach
What can the Mavs expect out of Lamar odom? He's been terrible the past two games.
He can play hoops. He'll be fine. This trade came out of nowhere. Professional athletes have feelings. Imagine if you worked at the same company for 7 years and were one of its top producers and you walked into work one day and your boss said Blake, we're transferring you to Miami. You have 48 hours to report. Take care buddy. It doesn't matter how much money you make. Athletes are people too. The adjustment will take a little while and he'll be fine. Se you at spring training
If the Boys lose on Sunday night, I see Jeff Fisher here next year. When a coach or coaches cost you 3+ wins with their inefficiencies, you have to make a change.
NO. He's one of the most overrated coaches on the planet. All those years in Tennessee and most years they were average.
I know you don't want to talk draft, but I think Kellen Moore would be a great fit for the Cowboys... Your thoughts?
the only think worse than talking about the draft before April is talking about the draft before the combine. Sorry.
Is it more of reality that Tony Sparano becomes the asst. head coach than Norv Turner the OC?
yes, but both are real longshots
I'm still wishing the Cowboys were able to snag Roy Horton, just too bad they hired Ryan first. He is doing a pretty good job in Arizona.
yes. But it's still the Cardinals. I don't believe in them.
Going out on a limb...the Boys will win a close one Sunday night. They will do just enough to pull it off and then lose in the first round of the playoffs so the saga will continue. Need to change the coaching staff and get more playmakers on D.
The coaching staff is fine, in general. You need more players.
JJT I was pretty inspired about the OL draft the cowboys had early on this year, and I think Smith has proven to be quality. How do you feel about Nagy and Kowalski (with an actual full offseason of training)??
just guys. Nagy was a little better. A full off-season could lead to some real improvement
3 minute warning...lol
i dont think rob ryan will leave, if he does will the linebackers coach be the cowboys new dc?
nope. he'd be Rob's DC
with a mediocre center average guards and a rookie offensive line theyve held up ok considering the circumstances dont you agree? the offense still continues to put up pretty good numbers
most of that is due to romo. look how many times he avoids pressure, runs around and makes a play
What can the Cowboys truly expect from Dez Bryant going forward for next year? Can we label him a major disappointment yet?
Why would you label a guy with 57 catches for 858 yards and 9 TDs a disappointment? He's not perfect, but he's been a good player
JJT, do fanatics really think that you just change coaching staffs every year?
Weren't the Cowboys trying to hire Ray Horton as the secondary coach and not DC? I believe Vic Fangio was their first choice but he stayed with Harbaugh...
im playing some of the best football of my career im throwing multiple touchdowns every game and im not turning the ball over im spreading the ball around but of course the defense cant stop a nose bleed typical of my team dont u say
agreed. See you tomorrow tony
Who starts at left guard Sunday night?
Do the Cowboys switch Smith and Free next year?
Mr. Taylor do you have something against the Cowboys every article that you write about them I feel like you just enjoy ripping on the team!!! Kinda I told ya so. There a thing about being a realistic but Come on man! you cover for the Cowboys you should express hope to the readers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is that in my contract? My job is not to have faith, hope and optimism the Cowboys will do well. My job is to give my opinion why they're playing well or why they're playing poorly based on conversations with players, coaches and scouts. I deal in reality - not what you want reality to be. If you can't handle that, then it's a personal issue.
On that note, peace and blessings throughout the holiday season. I keep it real on the chats, it's the only way I know how to roll.
