Let the knee-jerking begin. Fire away with your questions about the 0-2 defending NBA champions.

JFB (Lewisville)

Would this team have been better served w/ keeping Fernandez and not spending the money on an older Vince Carter?

Tim MacMahon
  (12:59 PM)

You can make that argument, but I'm not much of a Rudy Fernandez fan. Did you see the guy during the playoffs last season? Also don't like his sense of entitlement. The mistake the Mavs made was trading a first-round pick to get Fernandez, not moving him to Denver.

Heathcliffe (ATX)

What is the most realistic outcome: Mavs landing Colony High's Deron Williams, getting big Dwight Howard or neither/someone else altogether?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:00 PM)

That all depends on what happens with Dwight Howard on the trade block this season. If he goes to New Jersey, the Mavs have zero chance of getting either of those guys. If Howard goes to the Lakers, the Mavs have a legit shot of landing Williams. If Howard stays in Orlando, I'd like the Mavs' chances of landing one or the other.

Nick (MN)

Any concern about missing the playoffs after being blown out 2 nights in a row at home? Also good luck with stopping Ricky Rubio and the Wolves on Sunday... last night with OKC wasn't a joke!

Tim MacMahon
  (1:02 PM)

Try not to panic until at least the 20-game point. I know that's hard after watching the Mavs get blown out on their home court the first two games, but I'd be stunned if this team misses the playoffs. It's a matter of whether they'll be fresh at that time and can peak in the postseason again.

Jarad (Ft Worth)

Hey Tim, It's looking like our starting unit is struggling while the youngest guys are showing promising signs. Who do you see having the biggest change in minutes going forward?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:03 PM)

The young guys are showing promise during garbage time. That's not necessarily a sign of things to come. But the rotation is very much in flux. It will be interesting to see if Sean Williams can earn significant minutes after his hair-on-fire performance late against the Nuggets.

Caleb (Champaign, IL)

your favorite to win the west & why?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:04 PM)

Oklahoma City. I think the Thunder are the most talented team in the West, and I think OKC learned a valuable lesson from the Mavs in last year's West finals.

Dejan (Slovenia, Europe)

So how long before Mark amnesties Carter? That trade of young legs in Fernandez and Brewer came back to hount them pretty fast, right?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:05 PM)

You don't understand the amnesty clause. Players had to be under contract when the lockout was lifted to be eligible. Plus, it can't be used in the middle of the season. And why would the Mavs waste the amnesty clause on a $3 million deal? They can put it to much better use than that.

Marin (Plano)

three team trade Dwight Howard to LA. Bynum to Dallas, Gasol picks and Odom to Orlando. If I am Dallas I am going for it. Andrew Baynum seems to be a good fit in Dallas (needs a Center) and then we have a chance at Deron Williams next summer.

Tim MacMahon
  (1:06 PM)

If I'm Orlando, I'm laughing as I hang up the phone.

Phil (Dallas)

Any chance Haywood w/ that bad contract gets traded this season? He is awful!

Tim MacMahon
  (1:08 PM)

If the Mavs trade Haywood, who starts at center? You'd be making a bad situation worse. Haywood has proven he can be a solid starting center. Look at his career track record. That's what the Mavs need him to be. He's not going to be Tyson Chandler.

Sam (Dallas)

Lamar Odom seems to be disinterested in playing right now for Dallas. Is it going to change? I really hope so..

Tim MacMahon
  (1:08 PM)

He definitely looks lost out there. Again, I give the Mavs 20 games to fit in all the new pieces on the fly. Odom is the biggest piece in that puzzle.

sahar (Israel)

New starting Center ? Williams? He doesn't have experience but he is better in every category than Eric Dampier 2 (Breandon Haywood)

Tim MacMahon
  (1:10 PM)

You think Sean Williams is a better post defender than Brendan Haywood? Better rebounder? There are a lot of NBA GMs and big men who don't agree with you.

JFB (Lewisville)

Do you see Carlisle starting Sean Williams to try to motivate Haywood to get in gear?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:11 PM)

Ton of Sean Williams love today. I see him eventually becoming the backup center over Ian Mahinmi. I'd be surprised if Brendan Haywood gets benched.

Ryan H (Birmingham, AL)

It still feels like Mavs could use another legit, defensive minded big. Dalembert seemed like he'd have been perfect. Is Przybilla an option?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:12 PM)

Pryzbilla might be an option. ESPN's Marc Stein has reported that the Mavs have made an offer to Kyrylo Fesenko, the 7-1, 288-pound for Jazz center.

Tim MacMahon
  (1:12 PM)

Oops. Answered before posting the question.

Jeremy (Sweetwater)

Do the Mavs have a realistic shot at a repeat?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:13 PM)

I wouldn't make plans for a parade at this point.

BK (DALLAS)

Tim who do you think should earn more time at back up pg/ sg roddy or dojo and why if you dont mind?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:15 PM)

I don't think Roddy B. can play point guard for significant stretches. Maybe he can play the 1 with Lamar Odom initiating the offense, but the Mavs can't trust Beaubois to make decisions every possession. So I'd rather see Jones at PG. But I'm still curious to see what Roddy B. can do in a Jet-like role.

Aditya (Bangalore)

You know, I watched the Miami game and the fourth quarter of the Denver game, and I don't think Odom played that badly. It wasn't like he couldn't play defense or was turning over the ball. He was just missing shots(which he would normally make). The good things is, he's getting his shots. Dirk is having the same problem, to an extent. I'm sure he'll be remedied in a week, tops.

Tim MacMahon
  (1:16 PM)

That's an optimistic view of a man who is 2-of-16 from the floor. With Odom, it's not so much about getting shots. It's about creating for himself and others. That isn't happening yet. He has only one assist in two games and has been far from impressive on the defensive end of the floor.

Dan (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

How much has Dirk's time off this off season been a factor in their struggles?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:18 PM)

When Dirk says the Mavs look "old, slow and out of shape," he's including himself. He's still working his way into basketball shape, but his conditioning isn't the reason the Mavs have been blown out two straight games.

al ayala (Los Angeles)

I see a lot of potential in Sean Williams and Roddy B as the youth and energy to spark our team. Do you think they will have a significant impact?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:19 PM)

They're young and athletic. Can they be reliable? We'll see. Dirk mentioned last night that the Mavs lost all their "energy players." Williams fits that mold. Beaubois needs to show he's tough enough to be considered that kind of player.

LeAnne (Washington)

Tim, the Mavs aren't off to a good start and I'm not sure D West is much of a replacement. Any chance they add Eddie House to the roster?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:21 PM)

All Eddie House can do is be a spot-up shooter. Shooting ranks pretty far down the Mavs' list of concerns. They need playmaking and an edge, and they think West can provide both.

michael turner (DFW)

Tim, do you think the Mavericks will recover from this sluggish start?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:22 PM)

I think they'll recover enough to make the playoffs. Ask me again in a month or so for my opinion on whether this team can be contenders.

JFB (Lewisville)

Did the Mavs offer Stevenson a similar deal as the Nets? Why not save the money, have a younger player, and better defender than Vince Carter?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:22 PM)

The Mavs weren't interested in Stevenson for more than the minimum. He got about twice that from the Nets.

Jason (Chicago)

Do you think Sean Williams will get a good amount of playing time? I think he has good potential on defense, but I don't get paid to tell what I think. What do you think of him?

Tim MacMahon
  (1:24 PM)

I like his athleticism and shot-blocking ability. He's an intriguing prospect. But let's wait to see him play at least one meaningful minute before hanging his jersey in the AAC rafters. His garbage-time stint last night was a good start to taking minutes from Ian Mahinmi.

LOS (Arlington)

Why does everyone act like this is shocking to see 'em struggle? It looked like the perfect formula for a slow start to me. (maybe not this slow though)

Tim MacMahon
  (1:26 PM)

The 0-2 start isn't really surprising. As you mentioned, the formula was there for a slow start with all those new pieces trying to fit on the fly while trying not to wear out all those old legs during the hurried training camp. But that doesn't excuse getting blown out on your home court in the first two games. It's been worse so far than even a pessimist could have predicted.

kevin (lewisville)

tim if the mavs dont land williams and howard do they even have a plan b with all cap space after the year --i think that is question that needs to be answered

Tim MacMahon
  (1:27 PM)

They aren't banking on signing a superstar. That's a pie-in-the-sky scenario. Mark Cuban has made that clear. If it doesn't happen, the Mavs will most likely make their major additions in the trade market. It's much easier for a team that's under the cap to make favorable trades under the new CBA, which is a major reason Cuban opted to go this route instead of paying up to keep Chandler and Co.
