Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

MW here...what's shakin? Let's get this party started

Michael Willis (Houma, LA)

Two words: Drew Brees.

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Yeah, he isn't bad

Billy (Eastchester, NY)

Do you think David Harris was this year's biggest Pro Bowl snub?

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

Nah, I don't think Lewis deserved it, but I vote Johnson and Cushing over Harris for sure. Maybe Dansby too. Maybe D Jackson as well.

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

BTW, we did a LOT of Pro Bowl talk on Twitter last night. Follow me @WilliamsonNFL and go back and check it out. I am also cool with doing a ton of Pro Bowl talk here today too if ya want.

Matt (Orrville OH)

More important for Browns. Drafting a QB early or drafting a bookend DE for Sheard?

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

QBs trump everything.

Jvon (Charleston, S.C.)

Big Cowboy fan here. Would starting Scandrick over Newman give this 2ndary any better chance of containing Eli and his WR's? Newman plays 8-10 yards off of EVERY WR and is getting beat almost every time the ball is thrown his way. Keep up the great work Matty Ice!

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Yeah, I tend to think that Newman is done. Really has fallen off of late. And I do think Scandrick is a solid CB. Won't happen, but I do agree that it should.

Kurtis, TX [via mobile]

What Texan benefits more with Andres return? Yates or Foster? If u double Aj, then Foster and Tate may shred u, and do u even risk stacking the box leaving andre 1on1. All Yates jus has to do is throw it in his area and andre will most likely catch it. Id be worried if im a D coordinator and playing houston regardless of a rookie qb.

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Well first, I think Andre J needs to prove that he is Andre J out there and not just a guy in his uniform who can't move well enough to be great. We shall see about that. But I do think the answer to your question is clearly Yates. Yates needs a guy to lighten his load in the passing game. Move the sticks. They were terrible on 3rd down last week. Of course all of this is a chicken or egg scenario too. If Foster gets less attention, you are in 3rd and long less, etc.

Matt P (Berkshire, NY)

Should the Vikings start Joe Webb this week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

If Ponder is slightly injured, which it sure seems like he is, then yes.

Frank (Minneapolis) [via mobile]

Matt, with Adrian Peterson hurt do the Vikings look for a running back early in the draft or should they stick to offensive line and secondary?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Well, they have time between now and when the off season officially starts to see how Peterson is progressing. I would not use a high pick at RB though. RBs are just too easy to find. Maybe a mid round pick on a quicker smaller guy that catches passes well and returns or a throw a few bucks at a similar free agent that isn't super expensive.

Brooks (Jacksonville)

Who do you see the Jaguars getting for head coach? Also do we have a shot at getting Marquise Colston and Reggie Wayne?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Well, to me, JAX clearly needs to find an O Head Coach. A guy that has mentored QBs.

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Hang tight guys-be back in 5 min

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Back...when ya gotta go...

chauncey (teaneck)

should the Jets trade sanchez?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

No. Everyone knows that I am not a huge Sanchez guy-to put it mildly. But what are you going to get in return? He is making early first round money. I would keep him and bring in competition instead of trading him for like a 4th round pick.

chauncey (teaneck)

who will win the broncos chiefs game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

I picked KC. Don't like how DEN is playing at all right now. Can't say I feel real strong about that selection however.

Buddy (Peoria, IL)

Do the Bears clean house this off season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Highly doubt it. They are a playoff team if Cutler doesn't get hurt. I say keep the course right now and look to further help that OL. Add another significant weapon.

Tom Coughlin (film room)

If we lose on Sunday, am I out of a job?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Recently, I have been in favor of that. But the more I think that through, I think Coughlin deserves to stay no matter what. Does that mean NYG agrees with me? I don't know. However-if you know you can land Cowher, I prob pull the trigger.

Dave (Charlotte)

What is the most attractive head coach opening out there?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Would say SD. They have a QB. Not a massive rebuilding project. Plus...not a bad city to live in!

Buddy (Peoria, IL)

Regarding my Bears question, I meant coaches and front office. Not players. Sorry for the confusion.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Yeah, I knew that. Sorry, my answer may have come across differently. But yes, stay the course with what is there.

Buddy (Peoria, IL)

I say the Dolphins blow out the Jets this weekend. Am I nuts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I am picking MIA myself....not in a blow out however.

Mike (St. Paul)

If the Saints and Falcons meet again who are you picking? I know is that really a question but still the Falcons could make it more interesting than on Monday night.

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Will pick NO every time.

kelly (ohio)

Matt, if the Colts lose the #1 pick who do they take with the #2 pick thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

I would still think they go QB. I still need to dig into draft prep-just pretty much started that, but RG3 sure seems like a prospect worthy of #2.

Brian (Tampa)

What the heck happened here this year?!!???

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

You guys have a lot of problems. Team speed is a problem. Overall, the team is just too young. TBay has taken more chances on risky character players than any other of late-that needs to stop. Need someone to come in and start over with Freeman-break him down and really work with the guy.

ASN (NY)

Lot of people complaining about the Eli Pro Bowl pick, but shouldn't the fans remember that he was only 5th in the fan vote, which means that the coaches and players are the ones who put him ahead of Stafford and Newton?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

That is a good point. Eli was an obvious 3rd NFC QB to me. I took a lot of heat for that last night on Twitter because Stafford and Romo's numbers are better, but I still think that Eli had the superior season and is the better all around QB right now.

Diane (Texas)

afc title game who do you have

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Not copping out, but I want to see the matchups first. But it will be 2 of these 3: Balt, PGH, NEng

Awayne (Indy)

If the rams get the No.1 pick would the Browns be interested in trading for Sam Bradford?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Probably, but I think STL would trade the pick rather than their current player. That pick could yield a ton in return...and fix a lot of things that ails the Rams.

Jason (Tampa)

Still got Miller for DPOY if Aldon sets the sack record this week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Sent my Rookie Report in to the editors about 24 hours ago and I mentioned in there that I am now open to giving it to Smith. Miller really hasn't been the same since his thumb surgery. But if the season ended this minute, I give it to Miller still. Another guy who is really strong is JJ Watt.

Anthony (Richmond)

I really dont understand how London doesnt get in the Pro Bowl. He has just as many Solo Tak's as Willis has Total Tak's...

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I hear ya. He has had a Pro Bowl worthy season-no question. But the NFC is also loaded at ILB: Willis, Bowman, Fletcher, Lee, D Wiliams, Tulloch. I picked Willis and Tulloch on my ballet.

Awayne (Indy)

Why does everyone get upset about Prow Bowl selections? It is,always has been and always will be a poor indicator of who had great season.Only people who should be upset are players with bonus for being chosen?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

I hear that. Especially with OLinemen. A lot of folks who really don't know select Pro Bowlers. Fun to discuss, but you are right.

Maximus (Rome)

What is it going to take for the Chargers to get back to being contenders? Can you see a 49ers type of improvement next year with the right coach? They do still have a franchisee QB ( I Think) in Rivers.

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Oh, they have the QB in place. The OL needs more work-but bringing back Gaither would be a good start. Other than that, I am cool with the O. On D, there isn't 1 massive need, but they could really use a little of everything. SS, OLB, CB, more DL help...a little of everything. OR...a stud somewhere on D. A real difference maker.

Awayne (Indy)

Robert Mathis to Patriots? Please say no!

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Seems like a wonderful fit, doesn't it? But BB hasn't spent huge resources on edge pass rushers. And Mathis prob wouldn't be quite as effective outside the dome. Still...

Dave (Upstate)

Who is the better team at this time, GB or NO?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

NO...they are my Super Bowl pick right now. Much better running game.

Julius (Atlanta)

Who would you take right now if Saints played in SF? and why?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

NO...picking the Saints against anyone right now. Even on the road. The fire power is just too much for SF's secondary.

Sammy (NY)

Who's your DPOY? Is JPP in the mix?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Tough one this year. Leaning towards Revis over Suggs. Justin Smith belongs in the convo, but he plays a tough position to award it to. JPP could have a case as well.

Steve (Bristol)

How many more years until the Skins start competing for that division? Any young players stand out to you that can be stars in the next couple of year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Well, the D is in place. And the O needs a LOT of work. And fixing the O is expensive in terms of draft picks/free agency...namely at QB. But like Houston's D from a year ago, a great off season on one side of the ball could be all it takes.

Brett (AZ)

M-Dub, did you miss the season opener? GB already took it to N.O!

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

That was like a 100 years ago! "Took it to NO"? That might be a little strong.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

RBs are easy to find, but isn't that what Denver needs? A breakaway threat to complement McGahee...like Montee Ball?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

A breakaway/big play RB would be great for DEN, but even guys like McCoy and MJD were 2nd round picks. Wouldn't break the bank to land one. MIA got Bush on the cheap. The Saints didn't have break the bank for Sproles.

Joe (the steel mill)

Can Oakland beat the Steelers in the wild card rd in Oakland?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Sure. But I don't like their chances at all. OAK just makes a ton of self-inflicted mistakes. That doesn't fly in the playoffs.

Lewis (Flint Michigan)

Will Detroit be able to go deep into the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

They could. Getting hot at the right time. Confident and improving on both sides of the ball. But their running game really worries me. Something K Smith looks like he can be the guy, but he is real tough to count on-even week to week.

Ryan (VA)

Darkside of the Moon or Back in Black?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Darkside...easily

Awayne (Indy)

What is your thoughts on drafting a guy to play a different position than he played in college i.e OLB to play DE or T to play G ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Happens all the time. Very doable. No problem with it at all. But as a scout, you need to know the make up of the player. Will he do the extra work needed to learn? Is he bright and eager?

Tom Brady (throwing righty, texting leftie)

Who do I least want to see in the playoffs in Foxboro?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

PGH

AJ (NYC)

Which WR should the bears go after this year? A Big WR like Colston, Meachup or V-Jax, or try to draft Floyd out of ND?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

You gotta remember what Martz wants from the WR position though. He wants I Bruce and T Holt. Quick guys in and out of their breaks. That doesn't work great with the CHI field and weather conditions, but that is what they do.

Dan (MA)

Matt, need your best guess here. Who is the answer for Miami at QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

If I am in charge of MIA, I don't overspend to get a QB. Let's say that MIA picks 13th or so. I would be willing to move around the draft board to get a QB in round 1, but I wouldn't overspend to do so. I would certainly bring back Moore-and maybe even Henne-and would be more inclined to take a high upside QB in the 2nd or 3rd round that needs a lot of work. Groom him.

Rick (Kansas)

Does Chicago even bother resigning Forte now? Khalil Bell is stepping up and like you said, RB's always seem to come out of nowhere. I feel bad for Forte.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I would Franchise him. Worry about this issue a year from now.

Rob (San Antonio)

Angus or David Gilmour?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Gilmour

Awayne (Indy)

Any thoughts on where you will be hanging out Super Bowl week, food and entertainment wise?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Oh, I will be home in Pittsburgh-as usual. I am sure I will hosting a Cover it Live chat for the game (& all playoff games) and will pumping out a ton of articles over that two week stretch between the Championship Games and Super Bowl. Used to go to the Senior Bowl with McShay, but too busy doing Super Bowl stuff now. But I do miss the Senior Bowl.

Jim (Southfork)

Flock of Seagulls or Duran Duran?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

You're Out. No Soup For You.

AJ (NYC)

regarding bears WRs, do you change your opinion if Martz goes?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

For sure. But again, depends on what the new O system is. Find players to fit what you do.

Ryan (VA)

Floyd or Zeppelin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Zeppelin is #1. They just are. They are Aaron Rodgers. Flawless. And great at every aspect of playing the position. Floyd is 2nd though.

Bradley (Dublin, CA)

There is no dark side on the moon...as a matter of fact, it's all dark

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

I certainly wasn't drunk at the time

Joe (NY)

Is it me or is the NFC far superior to the AFC?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

QBs are for sure. I would say that the AFC and NFC each have 3 of the Top 6 teams though.

MATT FAN (FL)

RG3 ? Do you see his play, similar to Cam?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Haven't seen nearly enough of him, but seems more like a Vick type runner than a Newton type runner. From what I understand RG3 is very bright and he took huge strides from last year to this one...which is extremely encouraging. Not sure anyone has tools like Newton though.

Joe (NY)

Nicks has dropped 9 passes the last 2 games. Does he have bad hands??

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Inconsistent hands. Capable of amazing catches. Huge strong hands. That is upsetting though. R White has a TON of drops this year, but I wouldn't say that he has bad hands either.

Rob (San Antonio)

Is it fair to say San Frans kicking game is what helps to make that defense so good? Watching Pgh. trying to go the length of the field every time looked impossible.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

I have Tweeted that I think SF's combination of special teams and defense is by far the best in the NFL. And that is huge. They consistently win the field position game. Their showing in this department against PGH was simply amazing, and prob unattainable again though.

Ryan (VA)

Just imagine if they just replaced the drummer and kept making music, unbelievable amount of hits..and they stopped in the 70s..

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Yeah, but Zeppelin isn't Zeppelin without John Bonham, John Henry Bonham.

RP (Boise, Idaho)

Is 12-4 a good record for this Steelers teams considering that they are a minus 12 in turnover differential?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

12-4 is a good record for any team. But that is rather amazing. They had a few games where they just turned the ball over a ton-and they lost. So that skews it just a bit, but still, they were on an all time record pace there for quite a while in their inability to create turnovers on D.

Maximus (Rome)

If you could be any pro athlete for one year, who would it be?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Well, Tom Brady gets to go home to a pretty nice looking wife...just sayin'

Brian (Dallas)

Will the AFC West division champ and the NFC East division champ be the 2 weakest in the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Tough call. Maybe the AFC 6th seed. But I think a team like Cincy is superior to any in the AFC West.

Rob (San Antonio)

Considering Baltimores 3-4 road record do you like them this weekend?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Picking CIN over BALT, but again-reluctantly.

Andrew (Kansas City)

Should the Chiefs try to trade for a QB in the first round? Cassel and Orton can play but they are not elite QB's and if the Chiefs want to be a true playoff contender they need to get a elite QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Would handle that situation much like I described in MIA above.

Tarek (NYC)

Speaking of going home to a nice looking lady, check out who Mark Sanchez is dating. He may be a mid level QB but he is living the high life! (Kate Upton).

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

I will def check that out...but Tom is a better QB

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

Does Tebow and the Broncos have any chance against either Baltimore or Pittsburgh?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

I really don't think so. Can't see them running effectively against either D.

Steve (Bristol)

Do you see the Skins making a move to try and move up and grab one of the two top QBs in the draft or try and solve it via FA?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

I would bet they try to get it done on DDay. Athletic guy with real good tools. Spend a lot of money on OL & a WR in free agency.

Mike (Brooklyn)

MW, NFCE showdown - NYG or DAL, who ya got? I'm feeling very confident in my NYG, especially with the return of #72 to practice today.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Picking the Giants too. DAL's OL really worried me vs. Philly-and it doesn't get much easier this week. G Men are at home. I trust their healthier QB more.

John (NY)

Was the Giants poor defensive performance this year because of injuries or do they need to upgrade at certain positions??

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Well, Boley is their only good LB in coverage. Rolle really struggled in coverage. Prince wasn't close to ready. CB injuries. But still-too inconsistent.

Dan (DC)

Gates over Hernandez? Seriously pro bowl voters?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I would have taken O Daniels over both, but I agree that Hernandez deserved it more than Gates.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Thought it was interesting the Ndamakung Suh was like the 9th most generous celebrity as far as donations...deserves respect for that...

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I have not seen the list that you are talking about-and I saw that you mentioned Braylon as well. Very cool. But Suh was on the podcast over the summer promoting a charity that was working with. Easy to overlook some of the great things that players do with their time, celeb status and money.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

Is Pat Shurmur the worst head coach in the NFL right now? I really can't pinpoint anything he has done well this season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Was an odd hire from the beginning. How good was STL's O last year? Yes, he developed Bradford well in that one season, but he just seemed like a Holmgren puppet to me from the start.

Harold (Toledo)

Speaking of Suh, why such a down year number wise?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Target on his chest obviously. But he also was more dominant in Year 1. Not worried about him at all long term. But even as a rookie, his run D wasn't great. Still learning.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Here's the link:http://www.givingback.org/Programs_Services/GivingBack30_2011.html

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Very cool. Thanks Scott. I will Tweet it out too

shanard (utah)

MW, could the ravens use b.edwards since boldin is out......

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Is he healthy? If healthy, a lot of teams could use Edwards.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

We saw how personal Tom Brady took the matchup with Tebow a few weeks ago...do you think he'd be motivated to catch Brees for the passing yardage mark?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

No question in my mind

Matt (PA)

I remember a lot of people wanting to run Ted Thompson out of GB a few years ago. I don't hear that anymore. He's the best GM in the league the last several years.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

No question. I also remember Thompson catching a LOT of heat for picking Rodgers over Favre.

cp (reno)

No Ike Taylor??? you can't tell me that no interceptions means no pro bowls

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

The AFC CBs are loaded. I would have voted for Revis, Joseph and Haden. But you can make a case for Taylor, Champ, Flowers and Webb.

shanard (utah)

MW, could we see ryan torrain in denver again i know he is injury prone but mcgahee, and him and tebow they could wear down a defense with 2 bruising back........

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Doesn't sound like a terrible idea. Not a believer in Torain here and I think they could use a big play guy more than a bruiser.

Mike (work)

Should Scott Pioli try and get Josh McDaniels so he can team up with Matt Cassel?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Yes...but as OC, not Head Coach

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Khalil Bell looked awfully good the last couple weeks...is there any way da Bears don't franchise Forte?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Seems unlikely to me. Could Franchise Forte and at least listen to trade offers for him I guess. Need 2 RBs.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

F

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Folks, I am out. Happy Holidays to all. Enjoy the games this weekend and Happy News Years-be safe!
