Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:00 PM)

Let's get rock this chat. Got House of Fire from Alive Cooper in my headphones to get it going !

jonathan salazar (VENEZUELA)

WHO WINS BETWEEN CAROLINA VS PITTSBURGH

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:00 PM)

Pittsburgh, 4-2 :) Oh wait, that game was night, right?

Andrew (Chicago)

The 2003 draft seems to be the deepest draft ever, with the likes of Parise, Fleury, Getzlaf, etc. If you had to re-do the draft, who would be your top 5 picks?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:05 PM)

yes it's a doozy for sure. I'd go:1. Shea Weber2. Zach Parise3. Ryan Getzlaf4. Corey Perry5. Marc-Andre Fleury6. Mike Richards7. Jimmy Howard8. Ryan Suter9. Eric Stal10. Thomas Vanek

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, happy belated Boxing Day. Now let's revisit our favorite LeBrun-Burnside debate....which conference is better East or West? Both conferences have 5 teams with 45+ points. If you were the GM of a team trying to make the Finals...which path would be more difficult....NYR, Bos, Philly, Pitt, FLA or Chi, Van, Det, STL, MIN. The East also has the top 3 goal scorers and the top 3 point scorers. And the top goalie and the top two defensive teams. Not hating, just saying.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:06 PM)

West is tougher. End of argument.

Jon Bon Jovi (New Jersey)

Pierre, hopefully it wasn't you that started the twitter rumor that I had passed away last week. What is your favorite rock version of a holiday song? Hopefully you enjoyed my music video from the early 90s of me singing "Baby Please Come Home for Christmas" while frolicking around with Cindy Crawford under the tree during her absolute supermodel prime....filming it was a tough job but someone had to do it.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:06 PM)

haha, no it wasn't me Jon Bon. Love your style though

Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh, PA)

Pierre, happy Russian Christmas from Geno. I am score 18 point in last 7 game. How long before I blow past Giroux like Russian space shuttle going past Canadian tractor? I am crush Hearst native like bug in scoring race.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:07 PM)

Leave my Hearst boy alone you crazy Russian scoring machine :)

Mike (Daytona Beach via Chicago)

Pierre, I am a huge Blackhawks fan, the trade deadline is a little over 2 months away. What name would you associate with the Blackhawks in a trade to help them improve there already pretty potent offense?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:08 PM)

Can't imagine offense is what Stan Bowman is looking for, but rather either a good penalty killing forward or depth on defense

Gerry (San Francisco, CA)

Considering what happened to Smith-Pelley on Boxing Day, do you think the Ducks regret sending him to the World Juniors?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:10 PM)

No, that's always the inherent risk in sending a player to world juniors. The flip side is that the tournament can be a thoroughly beneficial experience in terms of gaining confidence from playing on that stage, the pressure that comes with playing with Team Canada, etc..

Marc Muschel (New york NY)

Regarding henrik Lundqvist- My issue is that you as analysts constantly over look the fact that thomas has not played in 60 games or more in any season but one (30-29-4). While Henrik has played in 65 games or more in every season but his rookie year. That being said is how can Thomas be the clear favorite from year to year when he plays less games and the sample size is just much smaller. Hank is always in the top ten in both gaa and sv percentage and this year he is in the top 5 in both these categories yet all of you seem to say thomas is clearly the best goalie in the world. When all is said and done Hank will most likely go down as the best goalie in the history of the franchise. Henriks performance is unprecedented for a goalie and yet in many repects it goes unnoticed. I am curious as to what your thoughts are on the numbers and performance that makes thomas so much better then hank. Excluding the fact that his team won it all and he won the conn smythe. Is thomas not a product of a fantastic team in front of him? How often does he have to stand on his head for 60 minutes like hank does for the rangers?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:11 PM)

Don't have to convince me _ always been a Hank fan. The guys you have to convince are not the media but the 30 NHL GMs who vote for the Vezina

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:11 PM)

Crazy Crazy Nights by Kiss, very, very underrated song

Julian (Illinois)

Ok I know this isn't your Rant segment but I just felt this needed to be said. ESPN's Year In Review featured a 'year in remembrance' portion in where they mentioned athletes who we lost over the year. Did they somehow forget that AN ENTIRE HOCKEY TEAM WAS LOST IN A TRAGIC PLANE CRASH???? I understand that hockey doesn't get much coverage on the network and that you're a writer for the web and I'm not blaming you for what is/isn't on tv, but what are your thoughts on this? They are a nationally recognized network that took complete disregard to t tragedy that shook the NHL and its players. I mean there was coverage when it first happened, why no mention now? Disgust.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:13 PM)

As you pointed out, I have nothing to do with what the TV side does. However, I asked about it and I can tell you this: An updated segment will run Dec. 29 and Jan. 2 on certain SportsCenters to include a mention of the tragic Lokomotiv accident.

Alex (Anaheim)

The Rangers have looked good against the Flyers thus far. Do you see this carrying into the Winter Classic?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:15 PM)

Winter Classic prediction:Flyers 4, Rangers 3 _ 15-round shootout

Steve (calgary)

shea Weber's injury underscores the seriousness, in my view, of the situation regarding concussions and blows to the head. It seems that nearly every week I read of another player sidelined because he is concussed. What, in your view, needs to be done to reduce this problem?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:17 PM)

Well, the league is already doing a lot which I think has got lost in all this but it doesn't change the fact this remains an ongoing problem. A year ago at this time, for example, there wasn't an in-game concussion protocol in place (quiet room), Now there is. I also think you're seeing teams/players being way more cautious about treatment; staying off the ice, etc... in lieu of any concussion-like sign... STILL, it is far from enough. More studies have to be done, more measures if they make sense need to be taken...

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:21 PM)

On the phone with a GM right now. Back in 2 min

jimh (miami, fl)

Just heard a rumor that the injury decimated Panthers might sign John Madden tomorrow. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:25 PM)

Last I heard today the Panthers and John Madden's were still taking but a deal wasn't finalized yet...If they do indeed sign him, solid veteran, checking guy, good on PK, faceoffs, etc..

Joe (Thorndale, PA)

With yet another player (Shea Weber) falling to the tendrils of concussions, is it perhaps time for the league to more seriously address its stance on discipline regarding head shots? The current arbitrary discretion given on assessing supplementary discipline does not seem to have done much to stem the tide of injuries. Can other factors such as equipment, player size and rink size contribute, sure... but you look at the example such as Matt Cooke, everyone's favorite poster boy for cheap shots, who has dramatically cleaned up his act and has been noted by referees for easing up when in the past he would have recklessly gone for the hit is now substantially less dangerous than before. Seems to me the excessive suspension did something in his case.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:26 PM)

Great point on Cooke. One the big problems though, and fans are having a tough time understanding this, is that it's not just dirty hits to the head causing these concussions but also good, ol' CLEAN but hard hits that are causing them. To me, that's what concerns the league the most. The legal hits that are causing head injuries

Bill H (New Jersey)

Pierre. The Rangers are playing very well again. What do you think has been the most consistent part of thier game, which has made them tough to beat so far?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:28 PM)

Love their five-on-five play _ they're ranked fourth in the NHL in five on five goals for/against ratio. My favorite stat, tells you a lot about a team.

Imre (Missoula, MT)

Would Ruuto from Carolina be a good fit for 2nd line center? Think he'd be the missing piece to the top 6 for this and next year? He makes about 4M next year, so would do you think that would work cap-wise? What about Frolik (2M salary) and a pick/prospect for him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:28 PM)

One thing's for sure, Carolina will be listening on Ruutu and more than likely moving him before Feb. 27

Cory (Seattle)

What is Vancouver going to do with Schneider now that Luongo is playing well. Do they move C.S. prior to the trade deadline or let him leave after the year? Or do they find a way to move Luuu?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:30 PM)

Luongo isn't going anywhere. If anyone has listened to me all year long I've been consistent in saying that. The decision the Canucks have yet to take is whether they move Schnieder before Feb. 27 or wait until the off-season.... My sense is that the Canucks would have to be blown away to move the kid this season....

Mike Gillis (Roger's Arena)

Hey Pierre, hope you had a great Christmas and just like I gained about 15 pounds over a 2-day stretch, hope you did as well! Back to hockey...I always follow the philosophy that a team can not have too many defencemen and my team, the Canucks, are probably a Sami Salo groin pull away from major disaster at the back. I am looking for a right handed D-men who is ideally a 5th defenceman but can play top 4 minutes in case of a top-4 injury. Is Tim Gleason available, if so, what is the asking price?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:30 PM)

Yes he's available _ one of 5 pending UFAs that can be had in Carolina... not sure of asking price though

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:31 PM)

Crazy Train now by Ozzy. How do you beat that ??????????

Scotty (Templeton)

What can the Lightning take away from their win last night?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:31 PM)

Let's talk after they win 4 or 5 in a row

Gerry (San Francisco, CA)

Game of the Night: Vancouver at San Jose. Who wins?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:32 PM)

You know I have a soft spot for the Sharks but I can't go against the red-hot Canucks the way they're playing right now.4-3 Canucks in OT

Steven (Reno)

So touching back on your SJ sharks goalie glut, are there offers for Nitty? Do you see the Sharks rotating back up goalies ala the Islanders, or does it really matter because Nieme is going to get 9 out of every ten starts anyways?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

Don't know of any real offers yet for Nitty but yes, the Sharks will work hard to move him between now and Feb. 27

Andy (St. Louis)

Can the Blues hang around where they are despite having an under .500 road record, eventually they'll need to win more road games.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

great point

Mike (IL)

What potential defensemen might be available at the trade deadline for the Blackhawks to pick up? Any rumors out there of who could be shopped?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:35 PM)

Defensemen that might be available come Feb. 27:Bryan Allen, Tim Gleason and Jaroslav Spacek all rental players (UFAs July 1) from CarolinaOttawa's Sergei Gonchar (another year at $5.5 million next season) but has no-move clause; would have to waive itThe leafs have a glut of defensemen ONCE they're all healthy. They could move one (Franson?)And obviously RYAN SUTER is he doesn't sign an extension by Feb. 27 could be in play. He'd be the biggest name out there (UFA July 1 )

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

Is Jimmy Howard just really hot right now? Or are we seeing him make the jump from pretty good to being in the great category?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:36 PM)

The latter. And I've got him on my media league fantasy team :)

Ilya Bryzgalov (Philadelphia, PA)

Pierre, happy Russian Christmas. Who would win in a three-way fight between the universe, a siberian husky, and a hot blonde?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:37 PM)

Tough to bet vs. the universeNyet on the blonde

tom (hackensack)

Pierre, Do you see any Captains from a team being traded this year? Some that come to mind include Rick Nash, Eric Staal and Jarome Iginla...Any others i missed?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:37 PM)

Rick Nash and Eric Staal will not be traded this seasonIginla? We'll see... betting money is no... but it's not out of the question...

Bill (Raleigh)

Hello Pierre. It's no secret Eric Staal is underperforming this season. Do you know if any teams have inquired about his availability and what type of package would it take for Rutherford to seriously consider moving him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:39 PM)

If and when Jim R would ever consider moving Staal, it would be in the off-season at the earliest in my mind.... and that's if Rutherford would ever consider it then.... it's the last thing from his mind right now.

Don (Vancouver)

If the price is right (what would the price be), would the canucks move Cory Schneider before the trade deadline? I know you analysts mostly think they should wait until the offseason, but i would imagine the right price could do it..

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:40 PM)

yes, if the price is right

Richard (Buffaol)

What does Buffalo have to do to get it going? Coach or captain change maybe?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:40 PM)

get healthy, first and foremost

Cédric (montreal)

how long before Gauthier gets fired?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:41 PM)

Well, I would have fired him last summer, but that's just me

Keith (NYC)

Reading that the Rangers should acquire a defenseman. I disagree and think their current crop is good enough. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:42 PM)

Ask any GM of any Cup champion team from the last 40 years and they will tell you you can NEVER have enough blue-line depth. Think pitching in baseball.

Jaromir Jagr (Philadelphia, PA)

Pierre, how do you think the Penguins fans will react when I return to Pittsburgh tomorrow? Everyone knows how this will plaly out, but is it possible that I could be so out of touch with the reality of this situation that I might be surprised that the fans don't cheer me. After all, I had to "follow my heart" to Philly. Sorry, gotta go...Citizens Bank just called me and said that extra 1.3 million check from Dan Snider just cleared......

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:42 PM)

I know this: my pal Scott Burnside will be there to cover it tomorrow night for ESPN.com. Nice.

eric (via rail heading to toronto)

hey Pierre happy holidays

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:43 PM)

same to you my friend.

Imre (Missoula, MT)

Bonjour Pierre, comment allez-vous? I know offense isn't EXCATLY what the Hawks need or Stan might be looking for. However, wouldn't Ruuto solidify the 2nd line center spot that has been a bit undefined for the last couple years. Sharp, Bolland, Kane, Kruger have all played it but I feel Ruuto would lock it down, pourquoi pas??

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:44 PM)

yes, Ruutu would fit in great, no question... has some edge to his game, too

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:44 PM)

Here I Go Again by Whitnesnake....

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:49 PM)

Sorry had to take another phone call. Busy day !

rick (boston, ma)

Which two teams would you most like to see play a seven game series?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:50 PM)

whoa... great freakin' question Rick...1 _ Chicago-Vancouver for a fourth straight year, why not !!!2 _ Detroit-Chicago3 _ Boston-Winnipeg. After the game they had in the 'Peg earlier this season would be a rockin' series even if the Jets would be overwhelming underdogs4 _ Flyers-Rangers. Winter Classic reprise

TJ O'Neil (Flint MI)

Since the NHL has no explaination, could you try to explain why no suspension was levied on the Avs Cody McLeod for his board blastinng on the Wilds Jared Spurgeon?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:53 PM)

League's explanation was it wasn't really from behind, there was no real shove, and it looks like McLeod kind of warning Spurgeon that he was coming..... League spoke to both teams about it after reviewing it...

Tim (New Jersey)

You said in your podcast that every time you watch the Rangers, Ryan Callahan always sparks the team. Is there any chance I guy like Callahan, who isn't a big scorer, gets into the Hart discussion.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:56 PM)

Doubt it, usually need big offensive numbers to get into that discussion. But I do love that player. Great captain

Jon (Chicago)

Can you explain an aspect of hockey rules for me? Last night during the Blues/Red Wings third period the Blues took a penalty. Halfway through that penalty, the St. Louis goalie froze the puck (or technically the ref blew the play dead because he lost site of the puck). During the obligitory skirmish, Frazin and someone from the Blues were called with matching penalties. However, the last minute of the power play wasn't 4 on 3 in favor of Detroit, but rather 5 on 4. Why wouldn't the first minute of the matching penalities be 4 on 3 and then the second minute be 4 on 4? Thanx for helping me understand the rules better.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

it's called ''off-setting penalties."

Jeff (Clearwater)

Please tell us it was Yzerman with a trade for a defenseman.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:58 PM)

he would definitely like to, I can tell you that

Ken (Elkhorn, NE)

Jimmy Howard has been stellar this year. However, Detroit is in desperate need of a reliable backup. Do you see the Wings bringing in someone before the end of the season? And if you're up to it, who do you think it'll be?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:59 PM)

yes I think the Wings have internally discussed the possibility of adding an upgrade at backup goalie....

Marc (Malden, MA)

You're the only member of the national media who realizes Patrice Bergeron should win the Selke. Keep working on the others.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:59 PM)

I'll do my best, he's on my official Selke ballot that I send to the NHL every year

Nick (Nashville)

Who is the most likely to end up in Detroit. Semin, Suter, Weber, Parise, Rutuu?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:00 PM)

Hemsky?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:01 PM)

OK folks, I hear my three-year-old waking up from her nap. Got to run. Everyone here please have a safe and Happy New Year.
