Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

I'm here. Let's go.

Brian C, Rochester NY [via mobile]

Do you think Syracuse has what it takes to win the national championship?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:01 PM)

I'm more impressed by the Orange every time I watch them. They're separating themselves from the rest of the Big East. If anyone had any doubts about their national championship hopes, Syracuse has proven them wrong. They're definitely Final Four and national title good.

Ryan (Truck North)

Who's better Unc or, Duke and why?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:04 PM)

We'll know for sure next month. But North Carolina is so talented. I can't forget that Ohio State-Duke matchup. And the Tar Heels have more talent than the Buckeyes. North Carolina hasn't lived up to the hype, IMO. But the Tar Heels look like the ACC's best. Specifics ... Kendall Marshall is an experienced PG who has more chemistry with his starting five than Duke's backcourt ... Henson and Zeller are going to draw a lot of fouls against the Plumlees .. Who guards Barnes?

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

Myron, When is Alabama going to be back in the top 25?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:04 PM)

If they get past MSU next weekend.

Joe (Raleigh)

Is this the worst you've ever seen the ACC? The ACC is absolutely horrible this year. UNC and Duke are very good and Virginia is good... not much else.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:06 PM)

It's not the ACC's best year, that's for sure. I had VA on that list, too, until they nearly lost to ... winless Towson. Had that happened I would have written a column calling for the Cavs' immediate suspension from ACC play.

Shawn (DC)

After early stumbles against UNC and Duke, I have really been impressed with the Spartans. They might not be as talented as previous teams, but this team plays with heart and fights for every ball, a staple of previous Tom Izzo teams -- he has to be pleased.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:08 PM)

I actually think MSU's talent is underrated. Draymond Green is an all-Big Ten performer, maybe more. At this clip, Keith Appling will join him. Branden Dawson is going to have one of those "so that's why he was a McDonald's All-American" games soon. But they are tough. That was obvious in OT last night. They just outmuscled Wisconsin.

Ben (Springfield,MO)

Do you see Missouri being able to sustain this level of production and winning all the way into March Madness? Or are they vastly overachieving to the point where they're poised for a tournament letdown?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:10 PM)

I think Mizzou can sustain this success. But they can't lose Ratliffe. They're undersized in a league with some very talented bigs. But as much as they may face mismatches inside, opponents continue to struggle with Mizzou's perimeter speed.

Tom (NJ)

Myron,What are your feelings on 13-2 Seton Hall Pirates?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:12 PM)

Theodore is an experienced, poised PG. That's where it starts. Herb Pope is 35, but he's also one of America's most underrated bigs. You beat UConn ... a UConn team that folks were calling national title contenders a month ago ... you deserve kudos. I think we'll see Theodore and Co. in March.

Aubrey (Louisville)

What kind of run do you see Louisville making in the tournament?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:14 PM)

Louisville lost to a pair of talented teams in Kentucky and G-Town. But I had more concerns about that squad before those losses. They came close to defeat on multiple occasions. To me, it's all about the Cards' health. It'd be nice to get Blackshear back but Pitino doesn't seem to think that he'll contribute much. Hard to peg Louisville's potential right now until we know more about their health.

Dusty (St. Louis)

Thomas Robinson had 30 pts and 21 reb Saturday. Right now is he the leader for POY? Also, with everything that has happened over the last year, would him winning POY be one of the best CBB stories this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:17 PM)

It's kind of interesting that we're not hearing more about POY. I'd pick Robinson right now. Sullinger, Barnes, McDermott on my list, too.

LJ ('Cuse)

Recently, Syracuse was called out for having too much depth, as well as lacking a true star. But doesn't its great depth cancel out the lack of a true star (exemplified by Kris Joseph scoring 0 in a 26 pt win over Seton Hall)?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:19 PM)

I think Syracuse has individual star power. But when you're playing as a team and not concerned about one guy's production, it sometimes appears as if you don't have a go-to guy. I think Syracuse will need a few guys to assume that role in crucial March games. But they have a number of candidates.

Joe (Raleigh)

What's wrong with UConn? Or was their loss at Seton Hall due to the fact that SH is pretty darn good?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:21 PM)

Seton Hall deserves more credit. The Pirates have it now after that huge win. But if Andre Drummond is a lottery pick, why is my lottery pick taking five shots and scoring four points. I can't figure it out. That can't happen.

Pablo (Bloomington, Indiana)

How far do you think the hoosiers could go in the NCAA tournament?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:22 PM)

It's still too early to predict, IMO. The Kentucky/Ohio State wins were huge. But we'll know more about Indiana once we see how they play away from home.

Theo (NYC)

Hey Myron, what would be your fantasy starting five + sixth man in hoops this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:22 PM)

Aaron Craft, Kidd-Gilchrist, Barnes, Robinson and Sullinger. Denmon is my sixth man.

Dusty (St. Louis)

KU vs. K-State tonight. Who you taking?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:23 PM)

I'm taking Kansas State in overtime.

Mark (Vegas)

What dose UNLV have to do to get some respect??? They Dominated UNC and beat them by 10. And destroyed Cal and ILL. their only two loses can to players setting school records in 3's and on the road at wichita state and wisconson.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:24 PM)

They're ranked 17th. And you can't ignore the latter .. especially that lopsided loss to Wichita State.

DJ (Cuse)

Has anyone ever silenced the critics quicker then Frank Haith has?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:24 PM)

I'd answer. But I'd rather remain silent.

Al (alabama)

Is there any chance Minnesota could make the tournament this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:25 PM)

Always a chance but Gophers missed out on two key opportunities against Michigan and Illinois. Impressive effort but winning matters. Those losses might haunt them in March.

Myron Medcalf

Marcus Demnon (Columbia)

Thomas Robinson might not ever win conference POY.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:25 PM)

True. Denmon has been on my POY list all season.

Dusty (St. Louis)

Who are you picking to win the Big 12?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:26 PM)

Baylor

Matthew (NYC)

When looking at Duke and UNC, Duke is a much deeper team going 10 deep to UNC's 7! Duke also has 4 players shoot shoot 40% or more from 3. Also who from UNC guard's Rivers and who guards Kelly because they have no answer! Still think UNC is the better team?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:27 PM)

yes, I still think UNC is the better team. Those "seven" you mention are about to make a lot of money in the NBA soon, BTW.

Ryan (Mass)

Hey Myron, Don't look now but Purdue is 12-3 and 2-0 in B1G play! Remember they are two 2nd half collapses away from being 14-1 and a top 15 team in the nation! So whats your thoughts on this team going forward? I don't like to look ahead but they could start off B1G play 6-0 before the game in East Lansing! Thanks

Myron Medcalf
  (3:28 PM)

Certainly a sleeper in this league. They're limited inside and the Big Ten possesses some serious talent inside. But Hummel is in Beast Mode right now. Matt Painter is second to Tom Crean in coach of the year race in BT.

Kason (Colorado)

Really, Kansas State can't beat kansas in Manhattan

Myron Medcalf
  (3:29 PM)

Never said the word "can't." I was asked to pick so I picked. Kansas in OT. Could be wrong. But I think Kansas will be the better team tonight.

Buck (Indianapolis)

Do you think Butler will make it in the tournament this year with their poor start?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:30 PM)

I think Butler will need the Horizon League tournament to guarantee a bid ... could they win it ... I won't doubt Brad Stevens' potential in March.

Joey (Pitt)

If Minnesota never lost Mbawke would they be a contender in the big 10 and the NCAA tourney?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:31 PM)

I think Minnesota would have been a much better team with him. Better than MSU/Indiana/Ohio State .. nope. But they'd be somewhere in that 4-7 space.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:32 PM)

I meant Kansas State, folks.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:32 PM)

so many questions ...

charile (seattle)

who is better, Syracuse or Ohio State? i think syracuse

Myron Medcalf
  (3:33 PM)

Not an argument right now. Syracuse.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:33 PM)

Not an argument right now. Syracuse.

Joe (Raleigh)

You can't pick Denmon as your sixth man... he's a starter. Try again?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:34 PM)

I can't put a player in the sixth-man slot on my fantasy team? I wasn't aware.

Bill Self (Lawrence)

Myron correct me if I'm wrong here, but until some team besides mine wins the Big 12, haven't I done enough in the past 7 YEARS to show the analysts to never pick against my Jayhawks?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:35 PM)

It's always tough to pick against the Jayhawks. But Baylor and Mizzou are going to put up a serious fight against No. 8.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:35 PM)

Jay (Michigan)

Iowa St upsets Texas tonight, you agree? If you call that an upset...

Myron Medcalf
  (3:37 PM)

I don't know what to make of Iowa State yet. The talent is there. The chemistry is not. But it's a home game. I'll take Iowa State. Folks are going to hear a lot more about Royce White in the coming weeks. He's a force for Hoiberg's squad. He just has to be more aggressive.

Joseph (Chicago)

Is Indiana undoubtedly the 2nd best team in the big 10 behind OSU?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:38 PM)

I think it's Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State right now.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:38 PM)

I think it's Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State right now.

Jay (Michigan)

Good work Myron...do my Wolverines have a chance at an upset tomorrow night at IU?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:39 PM)

There's a chance. But the Hoosiers are confident. I do think the Wolverines are a different look for Indiana ... the way they space the floor with so many guys who can hit the trey .. the different zones they run ... Burke's speed and playmaking ability ... So there's a chance, but I can't pick against Indiana with the way the Hoosiers are playing.

dan (kentucky)

I felt like the officials ruined the Kentucky - Louisville game last weekend by calling 51 fouls (and 2 iffy technicals) resulting in 70 free throw attempts. Is this the best way for officials to assert control in rivalry games in wake of the cincy - xavier brawl?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:41 PM)

I don't know if there's a direct correlation, but I'm sure officials all over America are more aware in those situations. The best way for refs to avoid that kind of nonsense is to address it early.

Myron Medcalf

Chris (NY, NY)

In your opinion, who are some of the most improved players in the nation so far this season? If you had to pick one, who would it be?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:43 PM)

There are so many. But I like Meyers Leonard. He's playing way more minutes this season. But to go from reserve to possible lottery pick is impressive.

Jon (Owensboro, KY)

Will you catch the Murray/Austin Peay game on Saturday? Show the Racers some love...

Myron Medcalf
  (3:44 PM)

Yep. And again .. this team is getting a lot of love. Check the national rankings.

Joe (Raleigh)

Who makes it to the final four? National champion?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:44 PM)

Right now .. I'd pick Ohio State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Kentucky ... with Kentucky winning it all.

Mike (Omaha)

Do you think Missouri St. is for real or is the Valley a two horse race between Creighton and Wichita St?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:47 PM)

I think Missouri State is a serious player in that league. Beating Creighton is one thing. Dominating a nationally ranked Creighton squad and quieting a potential All-America (McDermott)for most of the second half is another. This MVC race seriously features five legit contenders. And Missouri State is one of them.

DJ (Cuse)

Kim English has got to be the most improved.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:47 PM)

He's on the list, yep.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:47 PM)

He's on the list, yep.

Marc (Charlotte)

UNC hasn't lived up to the hype that the media created. Is that their fault or the media's for creating such ridiculous hype to begin with?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:52 PM)

Thanks for asking this question so I can respond to the dozens of UNC fans who emailed me a few weeks ago after my Hype Column said UNC had not lived up to the hype. It's so easy to blame the media for creating the buzz. But the buzz started when Barnes said he was coming back. With Henson and Zeller returning as well, the expectation wasn't just a national title, it was dominance. They had veterans, star power, a coach who seemed to have the pieces to win title No. 3 .. and then UNLV happened. And Kentucky. Two losses to a pair of good teams, but they contrasted the nonconference dominance that so many anticipated ..media, fans, players, coaches (they were No. 1 in the preseason Coaches' poll). So I don't believe UNC has lived up to the hype. But I also believe UNC is a very good team that might win the national title if that makes sense. I guess I was expecting 1980s Mike Tyson. Instead, we've seen mid-'90s Tyson .. still good .. just not as good as I'd anticipated.

Charles (San Jose)

Please say something positive about the Pac-12.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:52 PM)

There's some great weather out there.

Jeff (Tunica)

I guess you think Calipari got enough experience in his first Final Four last year to cut down the nets this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:54 PM)

I just think Kentucky has the tools to win the whole thing. Before the season started, I picked Kentucky to beat UNC for the title. Nothing has changed for me. I still see the Wildcats cutting down the nets.

Jon (MI)

Could the Spartans be in the running for a possible 1 seed if they keep playing this well? Everyone is still in love with OSU, but they have shown mortality. your thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:55 PM)

Losses to Duke and North Carolina will hurt their No. 1 potential. But they're rolling .. could lead to No. 1.

Jeff (Tunica)

For Kansas to make a deep run in the tournament, will it depend more on their guards making shots or them developing some depth on the bench during the Big 12 season?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:56 PM)

Taylor. Turnovers. That's the most important thing for that team in the Big 12 and beyond.

Matt (Chicago)

Who do you got in NU - Illinois tonight and why?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:56 PM)

Illini.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:58 PM)
