Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

Greetings people and pets. Thanks for coming by. I'm looking forward to a good hour of conversation.

PM (Incognito in Indy)

I keep hearing about Andrew Luck being the #1 draft pick. Then the Colts end up with a terrible season and people blaming me, er, #18 for not being able to play. Is he as good as people say he is? Should I, er, #18 of the Colts be worried about loosing my, er, his starting job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

You'll know your status in the first week of March, when that $28 million bonus is due. If you're on the Colts and healthy, you're starting in 2012.

austin (houston)

ive heard experts talking how the colts should draft RG3 first instead of luck.. comments? where do you think RG3 will go

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

I think RG3 is great, and I think he will go second.

Brian Cushing (Houston)

What no pro-bowl, So do I take it out on Dalton this Saturday or do i wait till the Ravens game to show my anger!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

You're not delaying any chance to show your anger.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/32897/front-and-stunts-will-key-texans-defense" target="_blank">Front and stunts will key Texans defense</a>

KD (Nashville)

PK, I feel panicked that the Titans offseason is already looking discombobulated. Should I feel panicked?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Relax. A lot of teams will have a lot of free agents. A lot of teams will changes coaches at a position. Relax.

rick (Nashville)

Do you plan on getting any chickens to put in your backyard?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I do not. Should I have such a plan?

Tom (Baltimore)

Are Gabbert's problems workable in your opinion?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Fixable? I don't know. But I know they're going to work hard to find out.

Whitney (Crying Hysterically)

Paulie babe, have you ever considered that with a little more do on top you'd look a lot like Bert from Bert and Ernie?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

He is quite handsome, no?

Sean (Washington DC)

Delhomme looked much more comfortable against a team fighting for their lives than Yates did at QB. Do you think it's imperative that the rookie gets playoff experience, or could it come back to bite us in a one and done scenario.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Yates played one series in that game and looked fine. He quarterbacked wins over Cincinnati and Atlanta, both playoff teams. I don't understand the fan element that is on the Jake Delhomme train. It's not about getting the rookie playoff experience, it's about playing your best guy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Dear Chat Participants, If I knew who the Colts GM or the Jaguars coach was going to be, I promise I would not be saving it for this chat. Love, PK

Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville)

Should I cut my hair or continue growing it out and sticking with the nickname "Sunshine"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I think you should go for the Andre Agassi look.

Matt Leinart (random hot tub)

Hey Paul, has my boy TJ Yates put me out of my last shot at auditioning as an NFL starter?I am not sure I want to come back as a 3rd sting QB in Houston.Do you think I'll get a shot somewhere else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Someone will have you and what else are you going to do?

Craig (Indy)

I was listening to 1070 yesterday afternoon. In regards to the colts, the host said that former plays all agree that Manning and Luck could coexist on the same team, and it is the sportscasters, writers, bloggers that say different. My view is, its the job of the new GM to make it work with both of them on the team, if manning is healthy. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

It's not a matter of whether they could coexist. Sure they can. But Manning wants all the practice snaps. If you keep Manning, Luck isn't helping him win. If you draft Luck, Manning isn't helping him win (outside of from what Luck can pick up from him in the first year). Having both guys means you're trying to execute two plans -- present and future -- simultaneously. In which case both are weakened.

Stephen (Jville)

Of Chudzinski, Mularkey, &#x26; Jay Gruden (my personal 3 faves)... which would you take to lead the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Probably Jay Gruden one, Rob Chudzinski two and Mike Mularkey three.

Dan (Indiana)

Do you think the Colts will suprise anyone with a #1 pick of RG3 over Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I don't. But as we don't know who will be making the pick, it's a little early to declare.

Dan (Indiana)

Reading between the lines, with the colts letting go the Polians, I think that both Caldwell and Peyton will both be shown the door as well. Irsay has used words like "rebuilding" in recent interviews. I don't think much rebuilding will be done with a 35 yr old Manning. Are you seeing this the same way I am?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Yes, but Irsay also said before the Jaguars' game that if Manning is playing in 2012 it will be for the Colts.

Lucio (Houston)

How did Jacksonville end up with 4 prime time games this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Are we still on this? NFL helped Jags sell some tickets. Let it go.

Jeff (ABQ)

HA! Totally asked an NFC South question. Sorry PK!AFC: Is Luck's ego so large that he couldn't sit behind Peyton for a few years? Think about it, what a great way to work your way in and make a splash when you do.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

It's not an ego thing. Everyone seems to think because Aaron Rodgers did it, it's what must happen. Andrew Luck is better coming out than Cam Newton or Andy Dalton. Rodgers needed time. Sit Luck one year maybe. Luck is not sitting for more than that, and he shouldn't.

Rick (Nashville)

There's a bill making its way through city council that would make having backyard chickens legal. Good source of cheap healthy eggs...and playmates for your dog.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I am proud to live in Nashville. Except at times like this.

Elroy (CT)

Question about the coordinator hiring process. Who actually hired Gray and Palmer? Munchak, the front office, or both together? I love what Munchak has done this year, but if he was the one that hired Palmer that takes him down a few notches in my book (I really dislike Palmer).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Munchak. You can't have a front office hiring assistant coaches. The GM isn't working in game-planning meetings and practices with the assistants. The head coach is. Palmer and Gray are Munchak's guys.

Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville)

So is that the young toupee wearing Agassi or the old natural Agassi?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Old and natural, of course. Ed Harris. Bruce Willis. Use them as models. I do.

Bart (Iowa)

Paul, if Manning is healthy, does the most likely scenario in Indy entail Luck sitting behind Manning for a year and then re-evaluate after 2012?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Sounds neat and tidy. Problem is, a move with Manning would entail a gigantic salary cap acceleration at that point.

Gene Smith (Jacksonville)

Paul, how do you grade my work in the last two seasons? After a good draft class in 2009, i only have Alualu to show for 2010 and lots of questions with 2011's draft class. I preached to build the team from the draft, but now my Free Agency track record is way better.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Do on offense this year what you did on defense last year and you're golden if you're right about Gabbert. Big if, of course. I don't care where you get good players if you are getting good players.

andy (Baltimore)

Have you ever seen Jim Caldwell happy, angry, or excited? Every time I see him I always feel like I am getting his overwhelmed and confused face......

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I saw him happy. After they won AFC Championship Game. The guy's not a great game day coach. But he's not a complete zero by any means.

Matt (Indy)

Hey Paul! Given the current makeup of the Colts Defense, will this play into who is brought in as GM? I know they're targeting Eric DeCosta, who's familar w/a 3-4. If the Colts pick him, will this mean we'll see a 3-4 out of Indy next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

I think the coach, not the GM, will dictate the scheme. And should.

mike krzeszewski (jaxson de ville, fl)

Obviously Jacksonville is in need of offense, but let's say the Jags go out and pick up a couple WR's in free agency and draft a third in the later rounds of the draft. What position do you fill with their #7 pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Corner or defensive end.

JB (MN)

Isn't the special teams coach that the Colts let go, probably the best off of any coaches on the Indy staff? What chances do the other guys have of finding jobs, if this drags on and on?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Yeah, this plan is not exactly fair to the staff. Though they are under contract.

Sean (CO)

Love your stuff, thanks Paul. With the uncertainty surrounding Gabbert, do you think the Jags would have any interest in bringing in Tebow? And, what do you think it would take for the Broncos to cut their losses and move him? Obviously no one is giving up a 1st, 2nd or even 3rd but would a 4th do the trick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Supplement one QB you can't be sure about with another? Ingenious. Um, no.

Will (Tennessee)

Do you think there is a chance that the Titans look at R. Morris to coach their secondary?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

May not be a bad idea.

Will (Tennessee)

did you know that 45% of the Titan's sacks came from players who weren't on the team last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Is that really a notable thing since Jason Babin was responsible for such a large share of last year's sacks and was gone? And that they played so many rookies who obviously weren't on the 2010 team?

Ryan (Chile)

When is Gene Smith going the get the blame in Jacksonville? It's been three plus years since Harris is gone, and people still blame Shack. The team's best players (MJD, Smith, Nwaneri, Greg Jones, Lewis) are from the previous regime...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Where are Tyson Alualu, Terrance Knighton, Paul Posluszny, Clint Session Dawan Landry, Dwight Lowery, Matt Roth and Drew Coleman from?

Jack (Nash-Vegas)

Why aren't the Titans seriously considering cutting CJ? Kenny Britt is the offensive star now, they could find plenty of serviceable backs, and have $20MM left over to spend on Finnegan, etc. What am I missing here?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Keeping or not keeping CJ isn't going to determine the fate of other guys. They can afford to do what they want. They sunk $13 million guaranteed into him and think another $8 is worth it because they feel sure it was an aberration and he will be better after a season in the system, an offseason with the team, adjustments elsewhere, etc.

bob (boston)

do you see gray being hired in tampa, most seem to think the interview is merely satisfying the rooney rule, do you agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Probably not a front-runner there.

Larry (DC Now, Central Jersey raised)

Hey PK...did you see Prep knocked off Gill St. Bernards (highly ranked in the state this year). How about those Argonauts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Pump up Argonauts. (My high school, Rutgers Prep)

Zack (Charleston,SC)

Hypothetic question. if the Jags were to move to LA would you favor a Rams-Jaguars division switch for geographic reasons? Not much in terms of meaningful rivalries being broke up.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

That's exactly what I would do.

Dan (Indiana)

While reading several articles out of the AFC south blog, I had came across two interesting points. Kravits put out there, that Reggie McKenzie (now with the packers) was one of the possible candidates for the Colts new GM. I also read that Jeff Fisher has some sort of relationship with that same person. I'm looking at this as a possible new Coach/GM combination in Indiana. Any thoughts PK?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

What you read was the Titans interviewed McKenzie when they went on to hire Mike Reinfeldt. That doesn't mean he and Fisher are blood brothers. Could happen, but odds are Fisher is employed well before Colts sign a GM.

roberto (vice city)

titans were lame in the run game on offense and defense this year, do you see a center or run stopping DT being a bigger need?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Interior offensive line shuffle.

Rahul (Houston)

Judging from how poorly Kareem Jackson played for Houston against the Titans, who will start as the second corner for the Texans or at least play the most snaps? Do you see the Texans addressing the second corner spot in the offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

They have said Jackson will start. But I am sure they will do the weird platooning they like to pretend is 50-50 but never seems to be. They will have the luxury of not having gigantic needs. But Brandon Harris could graduate to being ready to contribute too.

Joe (Houston)

PK,Any chance the Texans mortgage their future and trade up in this years draft, ala Atlanta last year? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

To target what?

Blaine Gabbert (Jaxsunvilla)

Do you think that Jay Gruden can work his magic on me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Seems like as good an option to do so as any of the names surfacing. Has been a head coach at some level before at least.

Sam (Tallahassee)

PFT mentioned that vincent jackson would probably not get a franchise tag from the chargers, do you think Gene Smith would attempt to sign him in free agency or is jackson's baggage to great

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Jaguars have to target him or Dwayne Bowe. Both have some baggage.

Luke Mauro (Wethersfield )

How do u feel about Norv Turner retaining his job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Great. If I am a fan of Denver, Oakland or Kansas City.

Michael (Philly)

How much of CJ's contract was guaranteed? That can get the same production for much cheaper and improve their run defense.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Answers in here, thanks for reading: <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/32712/dont-expect-titans-to-walk-from-cj" target="_blank">Don't expect the Titans to walk away from CJ</a>

roberto (vice city)

do you see fisher luring away Cortland and other FA's from the titans to his new team? or would he not have that much sway with the titans players?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Could definitely see him liking Finnegan. There will certainly be some former Titans on his team.

Dan (Indiana)

Realistically, if the Colts pay Peyton his bonus, are there any teams that could even come close to affording his cap hit should the colts attempt to trade him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

The paid bonus hit goes on the Colts, not on the new team.

Shane (Houston)

Are you coming to the game Sat?? It's been a long time coming and we are going to be juiced up!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Where else would I be? Can't wait.

Dude, seriously? (Planet relevant)

Kuharsky -- you've spent half the chat discussing the front offices of 3 mediocre teams and your incredibly bald head, when there's a playoff game Saturday. What gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

People like you aren't asking questions, just complaining. Would you like some random stuff on the Texans? I think Arian Foster and the pass rush will both be big. I think the atmosphere will be incredible.

Sean (CO)

Why is Fisher such a hot commodity? It seems 6 playoff appearances in 17 years is making owners/GMs salivate at the potential.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Please list all the available coaches who want to work with better resumes.

Josh (Houston)

The Texans defense has played great w/o Mario. Should they franchise tag him or let him go to free up cap room? We could really use another deep threat to go along with Andre.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

They can't franchise Mario Williams. The number would be over $16 million. Sign him or let him go are the choices. They've been awfully good without him.

Lucio (Houston)

Are you going to be wearing battle red, steel blue, or liberty white Saturday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Something other than those three if I pack wisely.

Rob Yandow (Wethersfield, CT)

you see garrard latching on anywhere in the off-season? kind of concerning for him that the texans went with delhomme and garcia over a guy familiar w/ the division

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

He had back surgery and wasn't available.

Gene Smith (Jacksonville)

What are the chances Morris Claiborne is available at 7?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Probably not great.

chad (knoxville)

how would you grade munchaks first year as a HC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

A solid B. A lot of forward progress.

Will (Tennessee)

Offensively the Titans are 31st in rushing but second best in sacks allowed. Defensively they were also 31st in sacks but 8th in points allowed. With those numbers do you think G/C is a bigger need (my choice) or pass rusher? And can you see them making a play in FA to get address one of these needs with a top level guy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

A pass rusher is more important and impactful than all but the very best guard or center.

Wade Phillips (Houston)

Should I stay in Houston or leave for a head coaching job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

You can't just go pick a HC job. Someone has to want you. Have you heard of anyone wanting you?

Will (Tennessee)

What are the chances that the Titans address interior line on Day 1 of the draft? Especially if a guy like Decastro is available then?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Close to zero. They don't use high picks on linemen, and they shouldn't. Go find Dave Stewart again.

Robert (Duval)

Do you see the Jaguar offense in 2012 improving as greatly as the Jaguars defense in 2011?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

No. Awfully hard to make such a big gain in anything, better yet to do it two years in a row.

Sean (CO)

The best teams in the league right now (GB, NO, SF, BAL, PIT) aside from New England all have coaches with no previous experience. That says more than average retread...Philbin?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Sure. I am all for finding the next Andy Reid. But there are 10 misses for every hit. With Fisher, you know you are getting a guy that can help build and coach a competitive team. And he will draw better assistants than a newbie.

Kenny Britt (NJ)

Do you think my team will draft a wr if Floyd and Jeffry is available 20 since I haven't played a full season yet and have had off the field problems?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I don't know if they use 20 on one, but in first three rounds I would hope.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I'm not a big college football guy, so I don't have a lot of answers to your draft questions at this point. And until the season's done and I've had some time, I won't have studied up on prospects beyond the obvious.

Jake (CT)

The Jags hire a new HC who asks Tucker to stay on as DC, what do you think he'd do(barring he has no HC offer).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I think he'd stay.

Abby Normal (TitanLand)

Was Donnie Avery on a one year contract? If so, do the Titans sign him up again for next year? One decent game isn't much to go on...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Yes, one year. And no on being back.

Micah (Kansas City)

After one season, are you a Gabbert believer or skeptic?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Where are the believers who don't work at EverBank Field? A skeptic for sure.

Nate (Ohio)

Which WR in free agency should the Texans get (regardless of money)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Wouldn't it be fun to see Reggie Wayne for two seasons with Andre Johnson?

michael ly (tn)

any chance the titans make a run at mario williams if hes available he seems to fit the bigger de mold and talent wise hes head and shoulders above whats we have at that possision!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Also could be called injury prone and will cost a fortune. Titans don't generally go get outsiders who cost a fortune. Jacksonville is more likely to chase him.

Rob Yandow (Wethersfield, CT)

Raheem Morris to coach the secondary in Nashville, while Steve Spags is the DC and Haley is the OC. wutcha think? forget loyalty and giving guys more than 1 year

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Your policy: Hire any recognizable name who's been fired.

Jim Irsay (Indy)

So, I am thinking about hiring you as my new GM...what do you do about Peyton, and the #1 pick? Do you trade it? Do you trade Peyton? Do you keep Luck and Peyton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I think, as difficult as it would be, I'd throw Peyton a parade and let him go before the bonus.

Joe (Jacksonville, FL)

So, when Indy continues their downward spiral will they be the team going to LA?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Never. Have you seen their stadium?

Matt (Texas)

Texans have a shot at continuing to make the playoffs next couple years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Sure do.

Sam (Tallahassee)

could you see the jags going after mario williams if we are unable to draft a premier d end in the draft

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Possible. But huge money on defense with some many holes on offense seems unlikely.

Nate (Ohio)

In your opinion, should/will the Texans trade mario, keep him, or let him go for nothing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Can't trade a guy who's not under contract.

Mike (somewhere)

Did you see Gregg Allman at the Ryman?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

No, not in my wheelhouse. Hatch Show print looked cool though.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, not only do I never know when your chat is going to be, now you won't even post my comments. Thought we were cool. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Let;s have a get together and hash all this out. I can be where ever you like, whenever you like.

Louis (Nashville)

What do you think about the Colts passing a potential starting qb this year in hopes of getting someone like Tyler Wilson maybe next year or even a Matt Barkley next year who i fell is equally as good as Luck

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

You don't build a team by planning for who you're going to draft next year. If you love Barkley now and think he's your guy in a year, what happens if he shatters his leg/ stinks/ isn't available?

Gregg Allman (via mobile)

Great, Pete Kuharsky hates my music. I feel like I've been tied to the whipping post.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Funny.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Ok folks, that flew. Enjoy the games.
