Welcome to our final regular season chat. We'll do some more when we're not on vacation or taking naps from a long season. Now let's get to the questions before I start to watch Set It Off on HBO.
If Peyton Manning were to leave Indianapolis, any chances on Cowboys going after him?
I doubt it. Tony Romo was not to blame for the 8-8 record. You can put two losses on him, Jets and Lions, but that's really it. QBs make mistakes. I don't want to take a chance on Manning returning from neck surgery. If you get a new QB get one in the draft and sign a veteran to back up Romo. Manning is not the answer.
What is gonna take to get over this hump.15 years and 1 playoff win is gettin depressing?
Two playoffs wins since the last Super Bowl title. Need to draft and evaluate better in order to move forward. It is depressing to be a Cowboys fan right now. Maybe you should take a break and root for the Texans.
do you believe cowboys will draft a defensive player with their top 2 picks
I think so. The needs on defense are CB, S and OLB. You can't get everything you want but in the first two rounds it would good if the Cowboys get an impact player. In the 2011 draft, the Cowboys did that with Smith and Murray and Nagy. But Nagy was hurt. Expect Carter to emerge next year.
Clearly, Garrett cannot manage the clock as difficult as it is. That being said, what are the odds of Jerry bringing in help for Garrett since he is overwhelmed with managing the clock? It's really embarrassing as a fan to watch...
Is Garrett doing too much? Probably. But is Sean Payton? Norv Turner? I think Garrett just needs a veteran coach on the sidelines, whether it's offensive line, that's where Tony Sparano comes in, or running backs to strongly remind him of some things.
Is Jerry ever going to "get it"?
I think he gets it. The issue is making the right choices and Jones doesn't do that. I don't believe he listens to his scouts enough and he pays players too soon and too much. The Cowboys haven't been to the postseason in consecutive seasons and that should be a wakeup call to him.
With 2 years left on Romo's deal are the Cowboys even capable of blowing things up even though they are not close to being contenders? Ware is the most valuable trade piece but if the Cowboys stick with Romo he has to stay to anchor the D. Seems like Romo is killing the team on several levels at this point.
It's not about blowing things up. It's about making the right decisions regarding the roster. Romo is fine. Had a good season and showed some toughness. But the issue is the defense. You need to find some playmakers in the secondary and another pass rusher to take pressure of Ware and Ratliff.
Put Jerry's many hats on for a second. If you have the choice of David DeCastro (guard), Peter Konz (center), Janoris Jenkins (corner), or Quinton Coples (defensive end) in the first round which direction do you go? Which position most desperately needs a 1st round upgrade. I say you go for DeCastro and pair him next to Tyron and not worry about the left side of your offensive line for the next 10 years.
Coples and Jenkins might not be around at 14. Defense is where I'm looking toward and I like Andre Branch, Dre Kirkpatrick and mark Barron as possible picks. Still a long ways to go.
CW...if a David DeCastro or a top flight OLB is available will the 'Boys pull the trigger or will they strictly go CB or S?
I like CB. If you blitz you need CBs to cover and the Cowboys' don't do that on a consistent basis right now.
On Scale of 1 to 10, how confident were you in Dallas going to NY and winning? If answer is less than 5 what does that say about your franchise.
Craig, I picked the Giants going into the game. I didn't have any confidence the Cowboys could win that game. The franchise was rebuilding all season, I said that back in September. Saying that, more roster moves are needed on defense and the offensive line to make this work.
will buehler be here next year and will the cowboys brign bac LP
Buehler is done and LP should return.
If Dallas don't keep L.Robinson what you think about Ramond Radway taking his place on the depth chart he was looking very good before he got hurt in preseason your thoughts?
The Cowboys lack depth at WR if Robinson goes and you can't rely on Jason Witten forever. But Radway had a strong camp and was one play away from making the team. It's a shame he got hurt on that play in the end zone. Terrible. But he should be ready to go for 2012. Andre Holmes and Dwayne Harris are two other WRs worth looking at. Kevin Ogletree and Jesse Holley will not return.
do you think there will be a competition for the starting runningback next year and will they draft one in the mid to late rounds because of jones and murray injury history
Here's the deal: DeMarco Murray is the starting running back. End of story. If the Cowboys have a chance to draft a nice third-down back I would do it, and try to trade Felix Jones.
If Newman goes will locking up jenkins be a priority and what type of money do you think he would demand since drew is his agent
I like Jenkins. He was the Cowboys' best corner last year. In 2010 it was Orlando scandrick. Consistency is the issue with Jenkins and Scandrick. I wouldn't pay Jenkins. I let him play out his final year and if he performs well, then pay the man.
Why did the Cowboys sign Sensabaugh to a extension?
Good question. I think the front office promised Sensabaugh he would be taken care of and he did play well at the start. But a bad foot slowed him down in 2011, so much so he was getting a pain injection before every game. If he was totally healthy he might have made more plays on the ball.
Fair to say that the Biggest game played in 2012 at Jerry Jones Stadium will be Michigan vs Alabama?
You taking Michigan?
If L. Robinson demands WR2 money, might the Cowboys pay him and then trade Dez? What could you get for Dez?
Nobody is going to trade Dez Bryant. Robinson is good, but not as good as Bryant. I wouldn't pay Robinson big money after just one big season. No way.
i said last off season to cut newman and sign carlos rogers. we have the same opportunity this off season. Would be good move. Newman is garbage (nothing personal)
None taken. He should have been cut last year, but remember he did start off pretty good, one scout told me after the first Redskins game, he looked fast and strong. But something happened, confidence maybe, to Newman. It's time to go.
Jenkins has been fairly good 3 out of the 4 years he's been here. do you think the boys lock him up before the season
Nope. They will let Jenkins earn his money.
cowboys wanted nhamdi because he was a press corner and it compliments robs scheme well. do you think this is why newman struggled because thats not the strength of his game?
Yes, Chris I would agree. You got to press people and slow them down especially if you're going to blitz a lot.
What about a transition tag for Anthony Spencer?
No. Too much money.
I was surprised that you elected to "trash" McBriar...can you please explain your thinking behind it? If his foot is such a concern, you would think that might drive the price down. He was one of our best players until the injury.
McBriar is an excellent punter. This issue is the foot. You're not sure when it's going to return to normal and if that's the case, even if you get McBriar on the cheap, there's no guarantee he will be ready for 2012. McBriar said it was a struggle to punt late in the year.
Would Robert Mathis be a good fit to replace Spencer? He is a free agent and speed rusher. Only 1 inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Spencer. Could be converted from DE to OLB, right?
I don't know. Mathis is a little wider than Spencer if I remember. Not sure if he's quicker off the ball or not. Some plays can't convert from DE to OLB. The kid in Houston can but it's not for everybody. Greg Ellis hated it but once he realized he could do it, was very effective.
I'm 47 and hope to live until i am at least 85 or so. Will i live long enough to see another super bowl win and do you think jerry will live until he is 120 years old?
Yes on both accounts.
So saw that Blame game bracket going on n kinda made got me thinking. JG is trying to change regime in Dallas. He's doing that without a sufficient oline underachieving defense and no offseason all the sudden hes getting thrown under the bus. I think this roster has many holes very hard to fix in one year left by the GM/Owner yet now because this average team didn't make the playoffs which many predicted we need a blame game? I'm thinking as a fan I've been critical of Jerry Jones n the puppets he's hired of late. I feel Garrett is not that and IMO is doing what he can with a team again with many holes caused by bad drafts n in my mind IS showing improvements. I applaud JG for going 8-8 from a 6-10 a year ago. Although he had some growing pains, as a fan of 30 years I like what the Head Coach is doing. Cant say I've said that in awhile about the Dallas Cowboys. What's ur thoughts n u agree about JG?
I like what Garrett is trying to do. He doesn't have all his pieces so this year was a rebuilding year for him. Now 2012 should be better. It has to be or that's three straight years without a playoff berth. Now sure if Jerry Jones will like that.
i heard norm talk the other day about the $28 million in dead money will be less due to a $17 credit as well as $7 mill more in savings from Newman/Kitna being gone. That said how far are we under the cap for 2012?
As of today the Cowboys are $11 million under the salary cap.
going into year 3 and with a full off season, do you think this is year for it to all come together for dez bryant?
Yeah, I do. Bryant played very well last year, especially in the final month. It takes a while for receivers to develop because so much is happening they have to process things so quickly. Bryant has all the talent to be a special player.
do you think newman could convert to free safety?
No, not strong enough. You got to tackle.
If the Cowboys had signed Nnamdi do you believe they would have made the playoffs? I know he didn't look good as an Eagle but I believe he would have played bump and run with Cowboys almost all the time and been exceptional
Yes, the Eagles had him in a zone scheme which doesn't suit him well. With Rob Ryan he would have played more man-to-man.
So the Cowboys are going to be owned by a kid named Spalding one day?
Pretty funny. But Stephen Jones is very sharp. A voice of reason and a little more hard-edged than his dad. He will make hard decisions. He was the man man in getting Terrell Owens send home.
I dont know much about Bruce Carter. How is his game? Can he Cover, and how can he compliment Sean Lee in the middle?
Bruce Carter is very fast, loves to rush the passer. Not sure if he can cover, but we'll see. Might be better against the pass than the run. Needs to play more physical but that will come once he understands the defense more.
When Jerry was asked about bringing in Polian, I think he took the question to mean for the GM role. Any chance the Jones' reach out to Polian to be a consultant? Can't hurt to have another voice in the room.
I wouldn't mind that so much because the Cowboys do need another voice in the room.
Contrary to what Todd stated above JG did single handedly blow a few games with poor decision making. In addition, can he please show some fire and attitude on the field. Also, punishing undisciplined players as promised would help too.
Jason is Jason. He's not going to show much emotion nor should he. He should be who he is. Nothing wrong with that.
do you think demarcus could have got the sack record if he was healthy over the last 4 or 5 games? because he was on the sideline alot
Tampa Bay game hurt him, but if you ask him if he rather be in the playoffs or have sack record, he say postseason.
Why do you the cowboys spend big money on aging vets and do you think they will do the same when romo starts to decline?
I doubt the Cowboys will extend Romo past these two seasons. Cowboys don't always give money to aging vets, Austin, Sensabaugh, Scandrick are not aging, they are young players who deserved to get paid.
I tweeted this at you, but will ask here: shouldn't the Cowboys pursue Raheem Morris as DB coach? The Redskins are. I know Minny might make him D-coordinator, and even Jerry's money can't trump that, but it's worth a shot right?
I wouldn't mind Raheem, but not sure if Rob Ryan wants him. This is a Rob Ryan decision.
Guys I have to go. Set If Off is about to heat up. Take care and thanks for joining me. Thanks a lot.
