With Canada's greatest band ever, The Tragically Hip, providing my background music, let's talk hockey.
Willing to admit that cheapshots are up because of the removal of fighting from hockey? Shanahan can't police the game himself. Marchand should have had to answer for this actions in the Stanley Cup prior to clipping Salo. That's why the Bruins hoist the Cup, and the Canucks complain to the media.
Why do I need to admit anything? I don't think we need fighting in hockey anymore. That's my opinion. You don't have to like it.
When all is said and done, what sweaters will Jarome Iginla & Teemu Selanne be wearing after the trade deadline? Thanks.
Ducks GM Bob Murray told me a few weeks ago that he won't move Selanne. As for Iginla, that's a great question... my sense is that he'll stay put and move this summer
What NY Rangers Players will play in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa?
The NHL's Hockey Operations department will announce the rest of the all-stars Thursday Obviously my guess is that Henrik Lundqvist, at the very least, will be on it
Are the Rangers really this good? They just seem really lucky to me. They will fail right?
I don't think they're as good as Boston, but they're legit contenders nonetheless
Don't you and Burnside think you're being a little harsh on your midseason grade for the Wild? They're still 7th in the west after being decimated by injuries all season and are still higher in the standings/points than most people predicted at the beginning of season. I know they've slipped the past month but this is supposed to take into account the 1st quarter as well right?
Fair comment on your part.I did the West gradings
Pierre, which pancakes are your favorite....strawberry, blueberry, chocolate chip, buttermilk, or homestyle?
Poutine Pancakes... if only they existed... Mmmmmmmm
Pierre, did you see Ron Duguay at the Winter Classic Alumni Game? Now that is one good looking guy. Remember he is married to 80s supermodel Kim Alexis. And his hairstyle looks awfully familiar.....
Funny story Dave Poulin told me after the WC alumni game. He said in his first NHL game, he fought Ron and got beat up. Poulin's agent at the time was Brian Burke. Burke had warned him not to fight DuguaySo, on the morning of the Winter Classic alumni game Jan. 31, Poulin (who know works for Burke in Toronto) says he got a text from Burke warning him not to fight Duguay... Hahahaha
''Fireworks" by the Tragically Hip. Incredible opening hockey lyrics. Check it out folks
Hello Pierre, I was on top of the world about a month ago, as were the MN Wild. They somehow got another win last night. It is very obvious what their issue is and it doesn't help having Bouchard out once again. I also know that Chuck Fletcher is holding onto our prospects and picks dearly, admittedly I understand why since he came into the job with nothing in the cupboards. My question is, is there anyway the Wild can beef up their offense before the trade deadline while holding onto the future of the franchise? Thanks.
I haven't looked into the Wild and trading deadline yet. Doing my rounds and haven't got to Minny yet.Check back in next week
With the Winter Classic, talk of concussions and suspensions, coaching changes - the forgotten story these days is the status of the Coyotes ownership and where the team will be playing next year. The NHL should be ashamed this is dragging on so long - especially since it hinders the team from making any significant moves at the trade deadline...and they're in contention for a bottom playoff seed out west. Any word when this might be resolved or where they'll be playing next year?
I inquired recently and said league was still hoping to find new owners but nothing really tangible to announce... Only thing that's clear is that league has informed Glendale it won't operate the team there yet another season if no owner is found. So either a new owner is found _ and soon _ or the team will be re-located
The Wings beat Boston, St. Louis, and Chicago, then they get blown out by the Islanders (2nd time in a row I hear).......please explain that to me, Pierre.
Well no Datsyuk last night plus Conklin in goal....Bottom line is even the worst teams in this league can beat the best on any given night: PARITY
Can I be confident that the Kings have finally turned the corner? And what wingers might be on the radar? Iginla, Parise??
Yes I think the Kings have turned the corner... They need help on the wings for sure and that's an area of focus for GM Dean Lombardi... For sure he covets Parise, has for a long time, but I'm not convinced the Devils will trade him before this deadline... And yes, Kings have liked Iginla for a long time but unless Flames have change of heart, not clear he's going to move eitherAnother name on radar for Kings is Ales Hemsky, UFA July 1
Do you think the Wings will use any of their cap space at the Trade deadline for a potential rental player?
yes _ like LA, they like Hemsky.... I also think if Ryan Suter becomes available (I said IF) then Detroit will inquire along with a dozen other teams !
Should the penguins pack it up and hope for better next year?
All depends on when they get word on Crosby for rest of the year....
When Chicago does get ready to make some moves, who do they part ways with? Any idea on what current roster players or prospects they're shopping right now?
Don't know who they're shopping, but know what Stan Bowman told me last week: he covets a 4/5 defenseman plus a No. 2 center
Who do you think the Flyers would have to give up for Suter if he was going to be traded before Feb 27?
Certainly if the Predators move Suter _ and it's not guaranteed they will _ my guess is that they'll want one of the great, young forwards on the Flyers...
True or False: most goalies do not want to face Marian Gaborik on two breakaways in one game
The Caps seem to be like a high school kid. When things are going good (beating the Rangers and Red Wings) things are great.....when things are going bad (giving up 10 goals in California) it is as if the world is crashing down around them? Will they ever grow into a consistent group?
Right now they're big issue is that they're a terrible road team
Pierre, did you see the new documentary on the 72 Summit Series that premiered on NBC Sports (formerly Versus)? And what did you think about Bobby Clarke's interview with Bob Costas during the Winter Classic (not sure if you saw the telecast) where he said the slash on Kharlamov was "the right thing to do" and "sure felt good." Was that the dirtiest and most blatant attempt to injure in hockey history...especially on a star player that was killing you in the series?
I didn't see it, we don't get that channel in Canada. As for Clarke's slash, of course it was terrible. The only thing I will say is to understand the Cold War context that existed at the time. My dad tells me stories about how Canadians thought our very existence was on the line in that series. In other words, wasn't just a hockey series.Still, no excuse for that slash... just giving you context
Pierre, is there anything more fun to watch than the on-ice World Junior Championship celebration...especially when the game is decided in OT?
Haha, great goal my friend. You'll look good in a Sens jersey next season
Having heard your interview on Vancouver radio, is it truly your assertion that Julien started the media war of words with Vigneault? Clearly Julien is defending his player. Vigneault all but threatened Marchand. Isn't that what drew the ire of Chiarelli, Julien, and now Neely?
Yes what Vigneault said about Marchand definitely drew the ire of the Bruins. But what I was clarifying was that Vigneault was himself responded to Julien's post-game comments about Marchand the day before... Follow the merry-go round !
Barry Melrose stated he thinks Chicago will beat Boston in the finals this year. How is that even realistic at this point? The bruins have 6 players in the top ten for plus/minus including the top four. They lead the league in goals scored and goals against, they have the top ranked and the fourth ranked goalies in GAA and have the highest goal differential in the league. How much more dominant could they be right now? Is there another team out there with four lines that can beat you as consistantly as the bruins?
Boston is clearly the favorite. But the West has some mighty contenders in San Jose, Vancouver, Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis
Okay we're at midseason. Which teams will be squaring off for Lord Stanley's coveted Cup?
I'll go with Boston-San Jose :) You know I have to pick the Sharks, hahaha
Pierre, the Ducks have now won three straight, and in somewhat convincingly (granted, two were against the Islanders and Blue Jackets). While the playoffs are probably out of the question at this point (too big of a hole to climb out of), do you think we are going to see this trend continue for the rest of the season, or are they destined for a top 3 pick in the draft?
yes I think the Ducks will have a winning record in the second half but the damage is already done. No way they make the playoffs
Bonjour Pierre. If myself and Erik Karlsson of Ottawa switched uniforms, would anybody be able to tell the difference? We are both young, relatively small, right-handed shooting, high scoring defencemen with stellar hair flows and quite popular with the ladies. The only difference is I have a concussion and he is starting the all-star game.
well, and you play better in your own zone... but Erik is young and still learning.
How much credit for the Rangers success should be given to *gasp* Glen Sather? This team is centered around a home-grown core that he drafted and complemented with, finally, some free agent signings that actually made sense. Extra kudos for him stealing McDonagh. It's taken over 10 years for him to put a team together that is actually better on the ice than on paper, but Rags fans, including myself, are really excited about how this club is performing.
I prefer crediting Torts
People are starting to look at the trade deadline and I'm assuming the Panthers are buyers. Does Dale Tallon make a splash or just tweak? And does he do it early or on deadline day?
Have to say I haven't heard Florida much in my conversations with GMs but given Dale's track record, he isn't afraid to add a player and my guess is he will try to do just that
With the Hawks having a lot of young players just being called up producing, do you think they have all they need to make a big trade were one to pop up?
Do the injury riddled Penguins finally win tonight against a resurgent Capital team despite losing to Kings on Monday?
I predict the Caps win 4-2
Pierre, As a Pens fan, I can accept the injuries, what I cannot accept is the lack of effort. I loved it when Orpik talked about the lack of accountability. What can be done to shake this team out of its funk.
Pierre, what is it going to take for people to notice Dan Girardi is having a Norris Trophy type of season? He plays in every situation, I believe he is top 3 in NHL in ice time if not leads, and has even provided some offense this year.
He's having a great year for sure, but I don't think he'll warrant Norris votes.
The Senators have been playing surprisingly well lately. Do you see them making any moves around the deadline to help them down the stretch?
I answer that very question in today's Daly Debate blog which focused on the Senators:http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7448804/pierre-lebrun-makes-awards-picks-first-half-season
What do you think the final outcome will be in regards to the NHL realignment?
My guess is that it will happen for 2013-14
Was wondering do you think the Red Wings should make a trade. I think the team needs a shake up.
The plan all along for Ken Holland was to use that cap space he has to make a move before Feb. 27
Paul MacLean has done wonders for a Senators that almost every NHL analyst predicted to finish dead last in the East. If the Senators do make the playoffs, would you consider MacLean has the leading candidate for the Jack Adams?
Funny you should ask. My mid-season NHL award picks were just posted:http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7448804/pierre-lebrun-makes-awards-picks-first-half-season
So let me get this straight, the teams in the west travel way more than the teams in the east. (if you can really even call half of the east's road games traveling). This is by a wide margin, and the realignment plan was going to balance that out (less travel for the west, and a little more for the east) BUT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO GO FOR IT? I don't buy it at all. Sure the playoff structure needed to be addressed, I get that, but what gives? This looks like nothing more than posturing from both sides. Is there no hope for realignment for next season or have we already begun down the path of labor strife and ruining a great game?
NHL LABOR TALKS ON THE HORIZON.That's all you need to know about the NHLPA not signing off on re-alignment
What are the odds Detroit tricks a team in taking the young, big, very clumsy Erikson in return for a better blue line prospect? Erikson, rather than taking the improvement path of Kronwall or being extremely undervalued like Brad Stuart (SIGN SIGN SIGN keeping Brad Stuart allows Det to look for an offensive threat on the blueline), has looked more like an on-going project with POSSIBLE upside alla Lilja or Kyle Quincy. With Suter playing in the same division, lets put defense aside. With Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Bertuzzi, and Holmstrom all playing a bit long in the tooth, what are now the chances Detroit decides to bring a big mean sniper like Jerome Iginla reminiscent of the Brett Hull or Shanahan signing (3 Stanley Cups followed), or try for a streakier player more like Zach Parise, Hemsky, Grabovski, etc..
Hemsky is name I've heard a lot connected to Detroit... doesn't mean it's going to happen, but I know Wings have interest in him
Hey Pierre! Who do you consider the best captain or captains in the league that best exemplify their teams' personality?
Chara, Toews, Thornton, H. Sedin, Callahan _ those are some of my favorite captains
Sorry for Sabres fan earlier, there was a glitch when I picked your question.Yes, my guess is that Darcy is going to try to act via trade between now and Feb. 27. From talking to sources on other teams, I know he's been looking around
With the Devils precarious financial situation, is there any chance Parise gets moved for futures while they're still in the playoff hunt?
My sense is that the Devils currently plan on holding on to Parise... but things can change
Bonjour Pierre!! Are the Kings ready to continue scoring goals? Their defense is solid!!! Come palyoff time watch out for this team!!!!
Hope they make it _ that way I can spend a day or two in SoCal again come playoff time :)
Pierre,What kind of moves do you think the Rangers will make prior to the deadline? When Sauer and Eminger come back, we will have 3 extra defensemen (Woywitka, Stralman & Bickel) now that Bickel would have to pass through waivers to go to the minors. I can't see them keeping all 3 guys moving forward. Do you see them making a run at a scorer?
From what I hear I think the Rangers would covet 2 specific things, not sure they'll get both but here's what I think they want:1. Top-six forward2. PP d-man
What do you think of Coach Sutter's turn around in LA and do you think this team has a shot for a nice cup run?
Ahem, I think is you look back at a certain blog before Sutter coached a game for LA you may have seen someone predicting this was a hire that would spark the Kings :)
If you were commissioner for a day what is one rule you would remove/ammend and one you would add?
Rick, welcome back my friend. If I were commish for a day? I would change the start/end of the season.I would shorten pre-season, start the regular season September 20th or so and ensure that there's no playoff hockey played past May 31
Given the dismal season Washington is having and the fact that they lack center depth, do you think there is a realistic shot that McPhee overpays and lands a center like Getzlaf?
I know GM GM is making the rounds around the league on the phone... but unclear to me what he's up to specifically
As the trade deadline (and playoffs hopefully) approaches, what do you see as the Leafs' biggest need and where do you think they'll go to fill it?
Brian Burke told me last Friday that biggest need for his team was to get bigger in top-six forward group
Why can't the Leafs get that coveted top centre? I understand it is hard but isn't there a player out there who wants to try and win a cup it Toronto? Someone with a sense of the significant?
Because they don't grow on trees
Who do you got tonight, Pierre: Caps or Pens?
With the Ducks continuously slumping, what are the chances of them parting with Bobby Ryan? I've heard rumors about Selanne, but wouldn't they get more for Ryan?
I think Bobby Ryan is a possibility, yes. Not a foregone conclusion, but a possiblity.
Why are you against us enforcers? Most cheap shots tend to come from dirty hits such as Bourque's to Backstrom or Cookes to Savard. While those plays need to stop, getting rid of the players who try to prevent that accomplishes nothing. Up the suspensions, but leave us alone.
I don't consider you an enforcer. I consider you a good hockey player who can also defend his teammates.
who do you like in tomorrow's game of the week? and is there any togher division that then central? vancouver is good, but would they have 57 points if they had to play in the central?
I'll take Blues 3, Canucks 2 _ 15-round shootout
With all due respect 'The Hip' take a back seat to 'The Band' and this is from someone who saw The Hip in the early days at Barrymore's in the 87/88.
Barrymore's ! You get major points for that
Trade or keep Kopitar?!?!?!? Are the kings finally poised for a breakout?
Is there a better team in hockey than the Boston bruins right now? They have 6 of the top ten in plus/ minus including the top 4 an they have the top ranked and fourth ranked goalies in GAA. They lead the league in goals scored and goals against. What are the chances they don't repeat?
They are the best team in the game right now. No question
With duchene out.. ryan o'reilley for the all star game?
He would certainly be my pick
Pierre, aint it kinda funny how tonight is a Pens-Caps matchup and there's almost no hype about it? Surely will be a battle and a good one to watch. Perhaps whichever team wins can use it as a catalyst for 2nd half improvement! (Also, sad seeing call-up Despres go down with an injury last night -- the list grows!)
The only hype is for the injured guys in the press box
Reading reports of Rangers going after Shane Doan. Does this make sense to you? If so, what would they have to give up for him?
Exchanged emails earlier today with Coyotes GM Don Maloney who responded like this when asked about Doan trade rumors: ''No truth in that whatsoever."
Pierre - what??? How can you not name Lidstrom to that list of Captains??
Oh yeah, gross oversight: LIDSTROM WOULD BE MY No. 1 PICK.DOwnside of these chats where I try to be quick and answer as many questions as possible, I often get a brain cramp, haha. Good catch
I lost interest in this chat after your opening comment...
hahahaha, sorry Rush... love you guys too :)
What is it going to take for someone to trade for me?
two things:1. Your desire to finally leave Columbus, which you still haven't shown2. Scott Howson's desire to move you, which he adamantly says he won't have
Pierre, What does T Ruutu command at the deadline. I think he would be a much better fit in Detorit than Hemsky. -Jay
prospect/pick would do it... and yes, since Ruutu is UFA July 1, Hurricanes are definitely shopping him
Who wins the Central?
The universe is so super expansive.......
It is, it is, Bryz.... now here's some advice: Focus more on your net and not so much on the rest of the universe
Is it realistic that the Leafs could potentially land another big impact player via trade like Burke has done in recent years?
I can tell you this, he's trying mighty hard
OK folks, that was fun again this week. We'll talk next Wednesday.Cheers
