Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

iPod is LOUD...it is Playoff Time ya know! Let's get this post season party started. Gettyup!

Maximus (Rome)

What up M-Dub, Wednesday is the holy grail of chat days! Should Matt Ryan's nickname of "Matty Ice" have a new meaning when we get to the playoffs, as in Matty "Ice Cold". Seriuosly though, can Matt Ryan ever be a Super Bowl caliber QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Wed is most certainly the Holy Grail of chat days Maximus! As for Ryan, I am torn. Physically, he is average-that will ALWAYS be a hurdle. But to me, the biggest problem with ATL's O is that they need pick-Running team with a big OL and Turner or a passing team with Ryan/White/Julio. Right now, they are neither-and can't turn one or the other on when they need to. I still have faith in Ryan, but he will never be elite. Needs to obviously show much more in crunch time. ATL as a whole-consistent. They beat bad teams and lose to good ones. Ryan fits that mold now.

Kevin (NYC)

How you you think Sparano (and possibly Haley) will fare running the offense for the NYJ? Do you see them bringing in Henne to compete with Sanchez?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I mentioned Henne a while back (& Campbell) as good guys to bring in on the cheap for NYJ-I like it. Makes a ton of sense. Can't see Sparano really opening things up or anything-back to what they do. But gotta make things easier on the QB. That O still has holes (RT, WR and maybe RB) that need to be fixed.

Sam (NYC)

What should New England's gameplan be this sunday?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Vary coverages on Tebow-was surprised that Pittsburgh didn't do more of that. McGahee has struggled lately-could be worn down. I highly doubt that DEN runs as well this week as they did when they met before-plus, Spikes and Chung are back. On O, just do what they do-which is amazing. DEN can not match up to NEng's weaponry. Pats win big.

Matt (Granbury, TX)

What are your thoughts on the re-tread head coaches?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Blah. Such a boring group of "Hot" coaching candidates this year.

chauncey (teaneck)

where will Peyton Manning land if not the Jets?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

I bet that owner in WASH would spend a nice buck to land #18

Peter (Brazil)

GB's corners- Woodson and Williams were key in their run last year. They havent been quite as good this year- how do you see them matching up with Nick. Cruz, Manningham?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

That is true about GBay's CBs and I give the Giants WR the collective advantage there, but I blame the lack of Collins and a poor pass rush (besides Clay Jr.) more than I blame the actual CB play.

Lucio (Houston)

Who has the better front 7 - Houston or Baltimore? Should be a very good matchup Sunday!

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Very close, but I actually think HOUS. Ngata and Suggs might be the best two players overall in the Front 7s, but I like Houston's more. Slightly. BTW, I am picking the Texans.

SK (MN)

BALT turned it over twice and forced zero turnovers but still won by 15 over the Schaub Texans (no Andre). You're such a Steelers homer...

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

My pick has nothing to do with the Steelers. Get a clue. Flacco is better than Yates, but it isn't like I am overwhelmed with Flacco. In Baltimore-rested Birdie. That is huge for sure. Not betting my kids' college funds on Houston, but I think Joseph eliminates Boldin and the Ravens have a harder time scoring points than Houston does. Andre J back is gigantic. Both run games/run Ds nullify one another, but I still give that edge to Houston.

Brian (Nj)

Any chance niners win this weekend?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Certainly a chance. I am picking the Saints. Would pick the Saints vs. anyone right now. But field position/turnovers/special teams GREATLY favor the Niners. That is substantial.

Nick (Florida)

The Broncos had three 2nd quarter turnovers that really cost them the game against the Patriots. If the Broncos win the turnover battle this time, do they win the game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Maybe...but they would need to win it by a large margin. I mentioned McGahee, fumbling has gone along with his lackluster play of late. I still don't trust Tebow to protect the ball vs. the multitude of looks Belichick will throw at him. Of course turnovers could go either way, but I heavily favor NEng in this department.

Matt (FL)

After seeing Tebow make big time plays against the Steelers, do you think he has the capacity to improve enough to be a 55% passer?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

That is a big jump. He played very well. Receivers were still very open though-and he did only complete 10 passes! 10. Still need to see him show the ability to put the ball in tight places on time...not holding my breath.

shanard (utah)

MW, what if jax would have drafted tebow what position or how many games could he have won, and depending on his wr's.......

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

If you take Gabbert (who was terrible) out and added Tebow instead for the entire 2011 season, I bet Jax wins one more game. Maybe two-if Jax tailored their O to Tebow like DEN did. Not sure that JAX would be a lot better off though for the long term.

AC Cowlings (LA Freeway)

Do you agree that there hasn't been this much attention paid to a white bronco since OJ was riding in it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Wow! I had to post that. Just too funny.

Jennifer (Boston)

Is the hiring of Josh McDaniels being overblown with the "inside information" angle? They have a new coach and new systems.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Yes. He was hired before DEN won that game. The moves makes a ton of sense for NEng no matter who they play this week. But still-why is that legal? I am shocked that the NFL hasn't told the Pats that he can't be officially with the team until after the season is over.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

Ed McCaffrey got a lot of props/attention as a white Bronco post-OJ.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Not as much as Tebow!

Matt (jersey)

Do you like the decision to bring Josh Mcdaniels back as Offensive Coordinator? Does Brandon Llyod join him next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Hadn't thought about Lloyd, but that is a perfect fit. Perfect. But STL should consider Franchising Lloyd.

Randy Moss (Foxboro)

If a playoff team signed me tomorrow, does their opponent still give safety help just based on repuation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Can you still run? That is the ENTIRE key with Moss. I don't know that answer.

Neil (NYC)

Is Tebow anything more than a uniquely skilled game manager?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Game Manager is too broad. He is obviously unique. Not sure I know the label to put on Tebow. Typical Game Managers consistently make the throws on 3rd and 6 for example of an average degree of difficulty to move the chains. Tebow doesn't.

Mike ((Boca Raton))

Is James Harrison on the downside of his career? Injuries have been getting to him a lot recently and he had the worst game that I can remember seeing him play Sunday.

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Harrison had a few plays were he was too aggressive vs. the option, but as a pass-rusher, I think PGH's whole game plan was mostly to just Tebow in the pocket and force him to throw. LBs don't generally play a REAL long time, so the end could be near-but when healthy, I still think Harrison is a tremendous player.

Ed Reed (Baltimore)

Am I still Elite?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

No. Sorry. But that just happens. Certainly can change a game at any point, but doesn't move as well as he once did-and due to injuries isn't close to the tackler he was.

Richard (New York)

If Stafford switch places with Mark Sanchez, you think Stafford would lead the Jets to the playoffs this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Yes. Might be the best team in the AFC too.

Justin Smith (SF )

Am I the best defensive player left?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Yeah, I would say so. You are a big time guy Justin!

Matt (DC)

Is Mark Sanchez the problem or that O line that lets him get chased all the time? I don't think Mark is that bad

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

I think Mark is that bad, but their OL has gotten worse-esp at RT, their running backs are ordinary and they need one more WR as well. Still, Stafford makes a lot of those problems much less noticeable.

shanard (utah)

MW, if the bills go out and add mario williams , cliff avirl how much better could that defense be and a tackle or guard with their first pick.......

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

If I were BUFF, I would stay multiple, but stay heavy with the 4-3...which it sounds like you agree with. One of those two would be huge, as an edge pass rusher is a massive need. But-don't take this wrong-but BUF isn't the most attractive place for free agents to sign with. Just saying. Stevie Johnson is a free agent-that is a major issue. But I hear what you are saying. Still-I want to add a 2nd round QB to the mix too.

Ted Bruschi (Boston)

I said on ESPN eariler this week that I would be disapointed if the Patriots don't make the Super Bowl because I feel like they match up well with whoever they play in the AFC. Do you agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

The Pats are the favorite to me in the AFC for sure now. As I said, they matchup great vs. DEN-and I think they win that game easily. Going to Foxboro is very tough too. I just don't think any of the AFC teams can score with NEng.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

If Buffalo does transition more to a pure 4-3 team, will Dareus play more tackle, or end?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

DT-and the Bills played a ton of 4-3 this year. Dareus and Williams would be an Elite pair of DTs to build around. DE is the problem.

Ryan (RI)

I have a better chance of hooking up with Gisele than Ocho Cinco has of being on the Pats roster next year, correct?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Depends what kind of game you have with the ladies Ryan...but yeah, I think that is safe to say.

JPP (NYC)

Can I get to Rodgers this weekend?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Yup..so can Tuck, Osi & Kiwi. Rodgers is obviously very tough to sack-gets it out so quick. But I do think NYG's DL is potentially dominant in this matchup. Gets hits on Rodgers-rushes him-doesn't allow him to go deep nearly as much as they would like.

Chip (NYC)

Is there a better fit than DeSean Jackson and the Jets? His me first attitude seems perfectly suited for Gang Green.

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Well said! Put him next to Holmes-and his me first attitude.

Blake (Houston)

#18 and Shanny? I don't see how they coexist. Might be two of the most stubborn men in football.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Could be. Just saying that Washington is a very aggressive franchise with such moves.

Aggie (TX)

Which is a higher priority for the Cowboys? OLine or CB? Also which position can talent be found in later rounds Interior OL or CB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

You can get much better value at interior OL than at CB on DDay. And I think CB is the bigger need as well. A true FS type wouldn't hurt either in Dallas' secondary.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Better fit for NEng next season - VJax or B-Lloyd?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Jackson is younger-prob more expensive as well. I like both players a lot, but I guess I would pick Jackson because of his age, size and he is more of a pure deep threat.

Jeff (Nashville)

Which NFC team do you think is more likely to get the "upset" - NYG or SF?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

NYG, but both are possible. Feel good about the Giants.

Chip (NYC)

NE has a ton of picks, Giants have Osi and Jacobs on the block. Is there a deal to be made?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

I would have interest in Osi, not Jacobs, if I were Belichick. But not for a 1st round pick. 2nd rounder.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

MW, seriously you're picking the Giants and Texans to upset this weekend?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

They will be posted soon, but I wrote up every game preview except the Texans/Ravens game. In those, I picked the Pats BIG, Saints in a substantial win, GBay by 1 point....cause I just didn't have the stones to pick against the Pack at home-but I might still go with the G Men on Friday's podcast. Perhaps. And yes, I like HOUS in a squeaker.

shanard (utah)

MW, can u see the bengals targeting richardson, since they are letting benson go...........

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

They have the picks to make that happen. And they might. I would not trade a bunch of picks for a move up for a RB. But I would very actively target M Bush in free agency. For Cincy, I see OG as their top need, but they also could use D reinforcements, especially at CB and SS.

shanard (utah)

MW, could the broncos bring in benson and let mcgahee go since it looking like he is slowing down a bit and since moreno is coming back nxt yr anyways or draft a hard runner like monte ball if he is around.............

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Moreno is junk. I do think they need a power RB to add to the equation. Benson would fit.

Shane (Robins AFB, GA)

HOU-BAL are statistically closer than most people in this chat realize. Penalties and turnovers will decide this game imo.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Could be very right about that Shane. REALLY can't see a ton of points in this game. And that allows HOUS to stick with their run game from start to finish. I like that formula on the road.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Matt, could you see both the Rams and Vikings trading out of their #2 and #3 draft spots in the first round? If so, who might be the teams that trade up? Redskins? Dolphins? Browns?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I very much think when it is said and done that Luck goes 1 and RG3 goes #2-to CLEV or WASH.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Better fit in Chicago with Cutler, V-Jax or Bowe?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Either would do-and be very welcome. That O system should change dramatically now-and they really need a WR with size/physicality. I like both fits, but I guess I slightly prefer V-Jax.

Steve (Bangor, PA)

Moreno is junk? Pretty harsh from behind your keyboard...

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Might be a little too harsh. But where do you suggest that I say it? Have said it on the radio and podcast as well. Average backup RB on a good day-and very much a bust for where he was drafted.

Aggie (TX)

Isn't RB more of a luxury pick on draft day? Look at all the very good RBs picked in later rounds. Plus winning a superbowl doesn't require elite RB play.

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

No question about it

Belanger (MI)

Is Demayrius Thomas developing into a True #1 receiever?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Extremely capable of being such a WR. No question. But he has really had two great games in his career, so I can't say it yet. Plus, he had four catches on Sunday.

Steve (Bangor, PA)

I suggest you don't say it...Moreno may not have lived up to the expectations of others (and injuries play a role there) but calling him "junk" is classless.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Thanks for the tip Steve.

Kevin (NYC)

Could Dwayne Bowe be a target for the NYJ if Haley joins the team?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Would be the perfect guy opposite Holmes.

rich germano (lynn ma)

Pats blowout Denver right

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Yup

Aggie (TX)

How much is Von Miller's cast affecting his play? Before the injury he seemed unstoppable but not afterwards. Although he had a good game Sunday.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I think it was a huge problem. But he had a smaller cast on Sunday and seems to be turning the corner with that. Hand usage is just such a massive factor with playing his position-not being able to grab cloth is a massive hindrance.

Maximus (Rome)

How many points would Alabama's defense give up if they were playing the Jaguars? Over / Under 12? Man that D is nasty!

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

OVER. I am think Jax wins that game like 30-0 if they played today

BSB (Philly)

Should we knock Tebow for only being able to complete passes against cover zero?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

He can only complete passes vs. the coverage the D decides to play. Again-he only completed 10.

Tim Tebow (Denver)

Why so little faith in me and my teammates, MW?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Because you are not a very good passer-and the guy playing QB for the Pats is. And his teammates are better football players than yours.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

The difference between elite college play and poor NFL play is still canyons apart, sports fans. It's simply an aggregate thing in terms of both talent and consistency/execution.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Big time. Full grown men. Professionals.

JOhn (Austin)

Considering the experience TJ Yates is getting this year and his relatively decent play, do you think Matt Leinert will be a Texan next year, can they get anyone to bite on him in a trade?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Prob don't need Leinart-not sure what his contract situation is though. But what do you get in return? Maybe a 4th rounder at best.

Steve (Bristol)

What's the wiser move for the Skins, address WR & QB both via drat, or try and get one of those postions filled via FA? I think the latter.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Yeah, I think the latter as well. QB is the real issue. Gotta find the right guy-no way around that. If they could pt a package together for RG3-that would be ideal.

Jeff (Nashville)

Matt Flynn or Mark Sanchez?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

I have reservations about Flynn, but I will take him over Sanchez-easily.

CJ (New York)

Josh Freeman or Mark Sanchez?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Still Freeman, but wow did he fall off a cliff this season

Mike (Brooklyn)

Chances of the Prince having a huge game on Sunday? He's gonna have to play his best game of the year for NYG to pull off the upset.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

He will be targeted plenty. We need to remember that Prince-like all rookies-was put in a very difficult position with the lockout-and with is injury, he is just SO new to all of this at this level. But he has ability for sure.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

Learning curve is so brutal for rookie corners and Rodgers & Co. is not a nurturing learning environment at all.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Sure isn't!

David S (Louisiana)

Whoa!!! Slow down on Matt Flynn please. Seems to be the Kevin Kolb concept. Fill in a couple of times with a great offense does not necessarily means you should get franchise QB money.Cassell, Scott Mitchell, Aaron Brooks, I mean the list goes on and on

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Yeah, I have reservations myself. But I see Schaub more than Kolb.

Greg (Austin)

Some fun stats to make you feel good about that Houston pick: Ravens 9-1 coming off a bye since 2002 ; Harbaugh 4-0 coming off a bye; Ravens 4-0 in their opening playoff game under Harbaugh; Ravens 8-0 at home this year including a 15 point win over Houston with their first string QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Ouch. I hear ya. But Stats are for Losers...

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Folks, that is a wrap for me. Drop me a line on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL)...can discuss whatever you want further there.
