Chat with Beano Cook

Beano Cook
  (3:04 PM)

Good afternoon and welcome back to the chat. Every game cannot be 31-28, so the BCS championship game was what it was. This will be the last college football chat until February. I ended 6-8 in my regular season picks, 1-2 in the postseason. Ivan Maisel was 10-4 in regular season and 1-0. We both had the big game right. I will have my picks and Ivan's picks for the top two teams next season at the end of this chat. Last year we went 0-4, for the record.

Lou (Bama Fan)

Where does Saban rank among the best coaches of all time?

Beano Cook
  (3:06 PM)

If he wins a fourth one, he would be up there with the greats. Right now, he is probably the best coach in college football. He won national championships at two different schools, and nobody else has done that since the weekly polls began back in 1936.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

The Razorbacks really the #5 team in that nation, or would you have them higher or lower?

Beano Cook
  (3:06 PM)

I would probably have them at number five. It was a good season for Bobby Petrino's team. They lost two games, to lSU and Alabama. That is a pretty good season. Good bowl win.

Nagle, Dirt (Big Apple)

Can new PSU Coach (O'Brien) teach an average QB how to have a stonger arm or a below avergae qb how to not stink? If so, he is a great hire.

Beano Cook
  (3:08 PM)

We will find out in the 2012 season. I will say this, give Coach O'Brien a chance for gods sake. There have been some former Penn Staters who have blasted the hire. Let's see what he does before you make judgement on him. We will see what happens.

David (Chattanooga)

Do you agree with Les Miles Decision not to put Jarret Lee in the game?

Beano Cook
  (3:09 PM)

Put it this way, he should have at least tried him and given him a chance. Five first downs and 92 yards of total offense, what did they have to lose?

Rick Moranis (Columbus, OH)

Did Virginia Tech gain any national respect after what happened in the Sugar Bowl?

Beano Cook
  (3:11 PM)

I think they got some respect. Virginia Tech had a good year and went to a BCS bowl. I do not know what the fans really want? I guess 14-0 every season. Frank Beamer's team played hard and just fell short.

Donald (Eugene)

Will the champions of the PAC12 and SEC meet in the 2013 BCS Championship game?

Beano Cook
  (3:12 PM)

Wait until the end of the chat, when I make my pick, an early one subject to change later in the year before the season starts.

Dick (Houston)

Does Oklahoma Satte have a legit beef?

Beano Cook
  (3:12 PM)

No. I do not think so.

Tom (NM)

Beano, 40+ days from the end of the regular season to BCS game is too long. I suggest giving the AP national championship to the regular season #1 (clearly LSU), and use the Coaches poll for after the BCS games. What do you think? USC,OU, OSU and now LSU looked horrible after 40 days off.

Beano Cook
  (3:13 PM)

That is not a bad idea, but I can assure you that it will not happen that way. I agree that over 40 days from your last game until the BCS title game is too long. Then again, it didn't hurt Alabama, did it? The Tide looked pretty good.

dahz (nyc)

Beano... in your opinion who will be the quarterback for the fighting Irish next season?

Beano Cook
  (3:15 PM)

Ask Brian Kelly. He has a tough decision ahead. The Notre Dame schedule is very tough next season with USC, Oklahoma and Michigan State on the road, plus Michigan at South Bend. I wish the next QB good luck. May be the kid they redshirted, but the competition should be very interesting.

Sal Lizard (Circleville, OH)

I've seen some overall conference rankings that put the ACC behind the Mountain West, Big East, and Conference USA.... are they that bad?

Beano Cook
  (3:16 PM)

No, the ACC is not that bad. Out of the six major conferences for the past season, I would put them number five, still ahead of the Big East for sure.

Otto (CA)

Why does the NCAA have people like Paul Dee makings judgements about USC?

Beano Cook
  (3:18 PM)

I have little to say about that other than to say Paul Dee should not have made any comments about USC.

Luke Richardaon (Danville, Indiana)

Do you think Collin Klein from K-State has a legitimate shot at the Heisman next year?

Beano Cook
  (3:19 PM)

Remote, but a chance.

LiLo (Kannapolis)

I expect WVU to have a lot of hype next season, with the Big 12 perceived as a stronger conference - if WVU is there - would say a 10-2 record in the Big 12 be equivalent to going undefeated in the Big East?

Beano Cook
  (3:20 PM)

First of all, West Virginia will be playing in the Big East in 2012. A court said they would be in the Big East for the next two years. They are not going 10-2 in the Big 12 if the Mountaineers were in it.

alex (fla)

Does the SEC prefer Georgia in the SEC championship game? Why else would they get the easiest sch next year and USCe has to play LSU and Arkansas and Georgia doesn't face any of the big 3 from the west?

Beano Cook
  (3:22 PM)

They had to change the schedule a little bit because each team must play six division games instead of five. Georgia does get a break because it doesn't have to play Alabama the next two years. The Bulldogs should win their division without too much trouble in 2012.

Mark (Alabama)

I heard on Colin Cowherd this afternoon that Bobby Hebert thinks Saban will be headed to Texas if Mac can't turn things around. Do you believe this is a possibility and is there any way to For Bama to throw enough money at Saban to keep him there?

Beano Cook
  (3:23 PM)

Saban, in my opnion, will stay at Alabama. That is my opinion. Of course, I also said that I thought he would stay with the Miami Dolphins, so what do I know. Nick Saban is 60 years old, so I do not believe he is going to be moving around that much.

Fred (Walla Walla)

Is there any school in the country that could lure Chris Peterson from Boise?

Beano Cook
  (3:25 PM)

I think there is, but it is hard to say which jobs are going to be open in the near future. He has had a chance to move and take another job, and he may be content now that Boise is going to the Big East ... maybe. One reason America wants to go to the Moon again is the Big East wants to continue to expand.

Beano Cook
  (3:26 PM)

Congrats to the Wizards for winning a game. Also, sorry to hear the Hostess went bankrupt. No talk about Royals tickets this week.

Danny "A" Walters (Bismarck, ND)

Could Virginia Tech win the SEC east?

Beano Cook
  (3:27 PM)

Hard to do since they are not in why ask that question. If they were in it, probably not.

Beavis (Dayton)

Will Michigan get smacked around by Alabama next year?

Beano Cook
  (3:28 PM)

If I had to make a prediction right now, I would have to say yes. Let's give credit to Michigan for playing Alabama and Notre Dame.

Tom (Kansas City)

Were you surprised Kansas hired Charlie Weis? How will he do?

Beano Cook
  (3:29 PM)

I dn't think he can win at Kanasas at a consistent basis unless you are the basketball coach. It is a tough place to win year after year and not easy to do it all the time. Once in a while, Kansas finds a way to have a good season. Go ask Mark Mangino.

Matt (Nashville)

Beano, Michigan faces the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th winningest programs of all-time next season, all away from home (ND, OSU, NEB, ALA). How will the Wolverines fare in 2012?

Beano Cook
  (3:31 PM)

It is a challenge but Brady Hoke has the program back in the right direction. 10-2 was a very good season in 2011. They will not have that record in 2012.

Mark (SC)

Can Clemson bounce back from that disaster in the bowls?

Beano Cook
  (3:33 PM)

It is not going to be easy but they have a lot of talent with Sammy Watkins leading the way. We will find out but for now it is a long summer thinking about giving up 70 points to West Virginia.

Beano Cook
  (3:34 PM)

In basketball, giving up 70 points is understandable.

Lou (Rockville, MD)

"Scandal" and coaching change notwithstanding, PSU still has some talent coming back this year. Do you think they can challenge in the Leaders division, or are there too many obstacles for 2012?

Beano Cook
  (3:35 PM)

Number one, the non-conference schedule is easy. The Big Ten isn't that tough. There are at least seven opponents they should beat for sure. Of the other five games, they should wi a few so I would say 8-9 wins overall. If Penn State was in the SEC, it would be a different story.

Rich (New Jersey)

With Alabama winning the BCS the way they did, there seems to be an outcry for a playoff by 2014. What change s should be considered over the next couple of season?

Beano Cook
  (3:37 PM)

After the 2014 season, I believe we will have four teams. They could start next season but the leaders in the BCS do not have the foresight to do that.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

What is your prediction for the Gators next season? Does Muschamp need to get by Georgia, and win the SEC East, to prevent his seat from rising in temperature?

Beano Cook
  (3:38 PM)

There is a lot of pressure on Florida next year, absolutely. They must contend in the SEC East for sure. One year does not make a career so we will see what happens.

Juan (NYC)

Is Barkley of USC the best QB next season?

Beano Cook
  (3:40 PM)

Going in, he is right there. Landry Jones is back at Oklahoma. We do not know about Tyler Wilson at Arkansas ye. Barkley makes USC a lot better than they would be if they did not have him, that is for sure.

Joe (Alabama)

Why will we need conference championship games if we get a playoff system?

Beano Cook
  (3:41 PM)

That is a very good observation. You have two divisions now in a lot of these conferences, so it makes sense to have the two division winners play to get a winner.

Mitch (Georgia)

Mr. Cook, you've seen a lot of great defenses since you've been covering college football...I know it's hard to compare across eras, but how would you rate Bama's defense this year against some of those past greats?

Beano Cook
  (3:43 PM)

You would have to rate them very highly. It is tough to compare them. It depends what you look for.

Chuck (Idaho)

Why even have season end rankings when the top teams don?t play each other because the BCS lets bowls make selections based on?MONEY!! Boise State got robbed again and the bowls hold no accountability! One thing that would help is eliminating the bowl tie ins so at least we could schedule some good games.

Beano Cook
  (3:44 PM)

It is the way it is. It is always about money, that is the American way. The BCS is only supposed to pit the 1 vs. 2 teams for the title.

Mark (Knoxville)

If Dooley goes 5-7 or 6-6 next year, what are the chances Tennessee will get looking for another coach?

Beano Cook
  (3:45 PM)

I think he has to have a good year. Fans are impatient today, that is for sure.

Beano Cook
  (3:46 PM)

Expectations are sonmetimes unrealistic in college football and some coaches lose their jobs because people believe they will be better than they end up.

Matt (Bham)

What do you think of Auburn's hire at DC- Brian VanGorder?

Beano Cook
  (3:49 PM)

To be honest, it is interesting to go from the NFL to college. Myself, I would prefer to coach in college than to deal with all of those egos in the NFL. Perhaps Brian Schottenheimer could go to become Alabama's offensive coordinator and they can match up. That would be intriguing. If Brian gets hired, he won't hav to worry about egos in the dressing room. Alabama is like the Marines, very disciplined. My spies tell me Saban is already done celebrating the 2011 national championship and is already preparing for the 2012 campaign.

James (Charlotte)

What do you think of the job Mark Dantonio has done at MSU?

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

Excellent. One of the best jobs in America. Now with the bowl win, look at his overall record. Plus this season he gets Ohio State in East Lansing.

Beano Cook
  (3:52 PM)

Time to make my preseason pick. Last year Ivan picked Oklahoma and Florida State and I picked Georgia vs. Oklahoma. This year Ivan picks LSU and Oregon to play for the national title. I am picking USC and Arkansas, subject to change. For the record, Oregon plays at USC and LSU is at Arkansas. See you again in February.
