Hello everyone. Welcome to the chat, let's get started.
Hey Garry, after reading Erik's post, we have 6 spots left in the upcoming class. Who do you think are the most likely 6 players to commit? Is McCarthy still on that list?
Yes, I do think McCarthy is still on that list. My top 5 most likely at this point would be Banner, Seumalo, McCarthy, Shittu and Agholor.
How is Antwaun Woods, DT out of Taft, developing? do you see him contributing next year?
This will be an important off-season for Woods in terms of conditioning and physical development. My honest guess is that he's a year away from really being a major contributor but the potential is definitely there.
Who are the most probable remaining targets that USC could get commits from?
There are a lot of really good offensive lineman. You figure the coaches want to bring in two more o-linemen for the class and they will be bringing in the following players for visits: Zach Banner, Isaac Seumalo, Kyle Murphy, Andrus Peat, Hiva Lutui and Kyle Dodson.
What USC Trojans will be selected in the 2012 NFL Draft?
The guys most likely to be selected are Kalil, Perry, Ellison and Harris. You also have to figure that guys like Tyler, Tupou, Carswell and Galippo will get a look.
Would the addition of Josh Shaw or any other player who transfered into SC coun't against the 15 scholies for 2012 or just against the 75 cap? I guess I'm asking if transfers into SC will count against that particular years 15 or just against the 75?
It will definitely count against the 75. It remains to be seen if the coaches will count him against the 2011 class or if he will be counted as a 2012 signee (limited to 15).
Are these transfers mutual to free scholarship position or strictly players looking for more field time?
There's a little bit of both. So far the vast majority of departures are guys who were looking for more playing time so they have that in common. Would they have left if there wasn't a need to reduce the roster? We don't know.
Will Josh Shaw be on scholarship and, if so, as an early enrollee will it be counted against their 15 scholarship limit for this year?
He will definitely be on scholarship. He will enroll immediately but it hasn't been made clear if he will be counted against 2011 or 2012.
After Woods, Lee, and Blackwell, what other USC receivers could see significant playing time in 2012?
You potentially have Farmer in that mix, we'll see how that plays out. After that, I think someone like Darreus Rogers has a real chance to come in and get some early time. It appears now that the coaches really want to bring in a second receiver too and a guy like Nelson Agholor could compete as well. I think both of them would move ahead of Flournoy in the rotation.
Garry, Which USC commits are tripping to Oregon?
Darreus Rogers will trip to Oregon on the 20th. Ruffin had talked about it but will not trip.
Who is your pick as the big "surprise" recruit that commits to USC?
Which one do we have a better chance at Stefon Diggs or Nelson Aghlor?
DT and OT. Both are needs. I don't believe that losing McCarthy to Cal is the end of the world but USC definitely needs a DT. Who might that be? OT is a big need. What news on Banner, Murphy and Peat?
Aziz Shittu is still in the mix. The Trojans will get a visit from Leonard Williams but that is a real longshot. I don't think McCarthy is done to Cal by any means. Of the offensive tackles, I would put Banner as the most likely to come right now but a lot could change over the next two weekends with the visits.
How many offensive linemen do you think USC will take?
They have three already in Simmons, Tuerk and Wheeler. I think they take two more, one guard and one tackle.
Do you expect USC to take another cornerback?
Tracy Howard visits this weekend and if he wants to come then you take him. He's really the only other option out there unless Davonte Neal decides to take a late trip.
Who are the top RB for the 2013 class I would think we would be looking for 1 or 2.
Early names to watch are Justin Davis (Lincoln of Stockton), Zach Green (St. Bonny), Terrell Newby (Chaminade) and Craig Lee (Redlands).
Is there any possible way Pinner can play as a big RB if needed?
I wouldn't rule that out. I think he's got a lot of running ability in a big body, he runs hard. With that being said, I've only heard him discussed as a fullback.
Garry - Do you think (disregarding injuries at the pos.) that it should be a plan to redshirt Bowman? We have experience and depth at the position but next year it seems the cupboard is bare. What's going on with Patrick Hall?
I don't think so. The primary reserves at safety right now are Drew McAllister and Demetrius Wright, both players who have battled injuries through their careers. It makes sense to have a versatile guy like Bowman who can get playing time at both spots. Lots of rumors out there about the possibility of Hall leaving but nothing confirmed.
When do you think Armstead is going to anounce he will transfer? I thought we would have heard something definitive by now. Any chance he's cleared by the medical staff and stays? Give me a %. I would say 20%.
His meeting with USC officials was on Monday so it's possible we could hear at any time. I think the chances are extremely slim that he is cleared by USC, I think that ship has sailed.
What have you heard of DJ Foster and what chances do we have. That being said his HS Coach was hired by ASU. How do you see this playing out?
I thought there was an increasingly good chance of the Trojans bringing him in until I heard about Sanders being hired at ASU. Now it would be a huge shock if he goes anywhere else but the Sun Devils.
Hi Gary and thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I know Ellis McCarthy is a commit to Cal. Do you have a feel if he is solid. If yes, then who else is being recruited for that spot (and maybe visiting) by USC coaches?
I don't think McCarthy is 100% solid to Cal. Ellis is still planning on visiting USC and I don't think it's done by any means. The Trojans are still scheduled to get visits from Aziz Shittu and Leonard Williams.
Garry P, love the chats. Which current commit are we in the most danger of losing? My assumption is Pio Vatuvei, but I'm horrible with assumptions.
I think you're pretty accurate with that one. If there is a player who seems to be waffling, it is Vatuvei. I think he's a solid, versatile player and would be a good addition to the Trojans.
Thoughts on Shaw transferring to SC? He can play both Safety and Corner. I like the kid and his versatility. Solve the issues for getting another corner or safety in this recruiting class?
I like it a lot. I thought Shaw was a real solid player coming out of high school and it hurt to see him go to Florida. It sounds like there are legitimate family reasons for him to come back to the area and the Trojans get to benefit from that. He's grown into a safety now, he's 6-3, 200 so I would be surprised if he got a look at corner.
Gary, how are you feeling out our back 7 on d coming into next year...
Terrific. It's a great group and it will definitely be the strength of the defense.
Garry there has been alot of talk of Jordan Payton bad mouthing USC during the Army bowl week. McCarthy surely got influenced by that. Also talk that SC is out of it because Ellis isnt used to the pressure he would receive at SC to start right away. He like to keep things on the low. Thoughts?
Jordan was definitely the ring-leader of the Cal contingent at the Army game and he wasn't sweet talking USC either. McCarthy did get influenced to make an announcement on TV, I agree with that, but I don't think it's over for USC by any means.
Since most likely Peat=Neb & Murphy=Stan. and Banner is a toss up. What are some back plans SC might have? I know Seumalo is visiting . Hearing Hiva Lutui and Kyle Dodson are too . Chances we get any of them?
Right now I would put Banner and Seumalo as my most likely pair to end up at SC.
will usc get any more Defensive lineman?
I think the coaches definitely want to get two more linemen, preferably in the middle. There will be visits from Ellis McCarthy, Aziz Shittu and Leonard Williams, in addition to defensive end Tyriq McCord.
If McCord still visiting, then what are the chances of him committing to USC considering his recent verbal to UM? High-Medium-Low
McCord will visit on the 20th and I think he's still in play.
Two parts ? First, any noise on which current players may transfer or be told their scholarships will not be renewed to reach the 75 limit. Second ? when is the date for the team to reach 75, on signing day or some point after, to allow the coaches to work out the numbers?
In recent days we've seen Amir Carlisle and Kyle Prater leave, now it appears as if Brice Butler is gone too. There are rumblings that Patrick Hall and maybe even Jesse Scroggins could be looking to leave as well but nothing is confirmed on either player. The team needs to be at the 75 roster limit by the time the season starts next fall.
Which current commit is our biggest recruiter? I've read Simmons and Starr, but curious to see who you think it is.
Both have been great but I would give Simmons the nod right now.
Jeff Tedford is on the verge of another huge recruiting class after receiving huge commitments this weekend. Do you think he can return the Golden Bears to the top of the PAC-12, and SC's top rival, a la the Aaron Rodgers days?
I haven't seen it from Tedford lately. He's always had a few really good players but it's been a long time since they've really had a good team. You can't argue with his recruiting right now and I know there's some optimism with the new facilities but at some point he's going to need to deliver more than he has so far.
With one DE (who is a soft verbal) and no DT in this class, what is the plan B is Ellis, Aziz, McCord and Williams all look elsewhere?
There aren't any other d-linemen being looked at for visits right now so I don't know how much the coaches would reach if they miss on those guys.
GarryImpressive list for visits on 1-13 & 1-20.Does SC have legit chances of landing Agholor, Diggs or Howard?
I would put Agholor as the most likely of that group. I really think the Trojans have a legit shot although a lot will depend on his relationship with the new Florida OC. Diggs may not trip to SC on the 20th so that would really make him a longshot. Howard is also an extreme longshot but he's the top guy in the nation so it makes sense to take a run at him. I think SC has a chance to flip Tyriq McCord too.
How has the departure of Prater and Butler affected Agholor (if he isn't already a silent commit) and Diggs? Has to be a big appeal to having opportunity to see the field as a freshman for a NC contender
I'm sure the SC coaches have notified Agholor of the fact that two receivers have left in recent days. I would agree that it should help the Trojans cause.
I dont think losing McCarthy is a big deal based on his 5 sacks againt very SUBPAR competition. HS football in that area is not great. Your thoughts Gary?
There are definitely people who agree with you. There are people who think he doesn't dominate as much as he should. I have no argument against that. I just think he has some unique physical skills that can be brought out with the right coach and Ed Orgeron has shown the ability to do that.
Who do you predict to commit next? I'm reading that Banner is a silent.
Seumalo is the one I could see USC getting from this weekend. Banner may not trip to USC until the 20th.
Which players do u see USC getting in on late. Last year they did it with Sarao,Walker and Dawson. Im sure we can do it again this year. Players that u are hearing? Love ur work Garry . Thanks and Fight On!
Seumalo and Tracy Howard would be two that we've seen so far. Seumalo is the #2 rated OG in the country and would be a great flip from Oregon State. Howard is a longshot but he's the
What makes you confident about McCarthy and Seumalo?
I'm confident that SC has a real shot with both players, I wouldn't say I'm confident that both are headed to SC just yet. There is work to be done here for the Trojans but I think both players are open to switching. Seumalo's dad is open to Isaac playing elsewhere as long as he gets good coaching and Isaac is impressed by the SC offer. I think Ellis got swayed by other Cal recruits in San Antonio and I just don't think it's a done deal in his mind.
is charles burks playing on offense or defense? which redshirt freshmen do you see contributing the most next year?
Charles is playing defensive end. As far as redshirt guys, I see Soma Vainuku, Victor Blackwell, Christian Heyward, Greg Townsend and Anthony Sarao having the most immediate impact.
GP any news on Seumalo, really like his stuff and he looks to be capable to play tackle in a pinch, What is your thoughts?
He will trip to SC this weekend and seems open to listening to what the coaches have to say. He's not a wide-eyed kid, his dad is a coach and he knows the process. If USC can make a solid presentation I think they really give him something to think about. I love his technique, he would be a great flip here at the end for the Trojans. He's definitely a guard now but I'm sure he could work at tackle if needed.
With the departure of Carlisle is D.J. Foster now in play for the Trojans?
D.J. is tripping this weekend to USC but ASU hired his HS coach this week so most people think the Sun Devils will now be hard to beat.
Gary the coaches must be high on Josh Shaw to use such a valuable scholarship.
Yes and I think he's worth it. Remember, he went to Florida when they were flying high with a recent national title. He was that "high profile" recruit that travels across country to go to the national champs, he's that level of player. There was nothing wrong with his relationship with the Florida coaches either, just a family health issue. I think it's a great pick-up for SC.
Thanks everyone. That's going to be it for today. We'll do this again next week.
