Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Good morning/afternoon people and pets. Nice to see you here.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

What are your thought and concerns on the Mullarkey hire? Any ideas who might be his OC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

OC will be a very big deal. No idea yet. I think he's got a chance. I have faith right now in Shahid Khan.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Startin' early today. What gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

This is our new slot. I have a conflict in the old slot.

TJ Yates (Flying to Baltimore)

Do you think that the best way to utilize Andre Johnson against the somewhat porous Baltimore secondary are short routes into the flats or long routes, such as the double move that burned Pacman Jones? What's your prediction for the final score so I can place my bet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

Both. Mix it up. And don't bet -- you'll get in big trouble.

jrod (OH)

Do you see Andrew Luck having a better rookie year than Cam and Dalton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Andy Dalton tailed off. I think it will be hard to top Cam Newton's rookie season.

Bob (Canada)

With Grigson as Colts GM, is there any chance of a coach from the eagles coming to indianapolis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Marty Mornhinweg would be the one real possibility. He's highly respected and people say he got the Detroit job too early.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Do you know what Fisher might do, and what do you think is the reason he hasn't made up his mind?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

Milking every last drop money-wise, contract provision-wise. I have no idea but will be surprised if he goes Miami over St. Louis.

Doug (Cincy)

Why do people seem to think that Andrew Luck needs to play right away? Aaron Rodgers sat for a couple years, and he turned out pretty good.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Andrew Luck will be superior to Aaron Rodgers as a rookie in every way. Talking 24th pick vs. clear No. 1. Lots of differences. He could sit one year, max. No one sits three or four years. Major exception, not new rule.

cole levine (h-town)

i dont see kareem jackson making any improvements this year. He barely has coverage and when he does, he doesnt turn around. I think Joe Flacco will throw the majority on Kareem's side. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

The Texans have survived Kareem Jackson all season, and he won't be out there all the time. Jason Allen will rotate with him to some degree.

Daniel (Jacksonville, FL)

What did you think of Khan's comments about his criteria for "real fans"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

It was better than Chris Johnson's attempt at the same.

Matt Schaub (Houston)

Pete, I'm kinda disappointed that you never responded to my chat last week. Are we not friends anymore? I noticed you responded to Peyton, and even offered to meet him and hash it all out. Now I'm feeling left in the dark with Peyton.....

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

I thought I did respond. I apologize if I did not. I want our communication lines open.

chris (Boston)

the Falcons in the playoffs scored 2 pts against the giants, and their defense scored those, doesnt seem to bode well for mularkey

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Also, it was one game. Should they have run out and hired Denver's guy because they had a good playoff game?

Blueman (INDY)

Paul please explain to everyone who the $28 million bonus would hit the Colts cap wise if the Colts where to trade Manning.(Those making it nearly impossible for the trade to take place)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

It's impossible to make a trade because the bonus is due before the new league year starts. You can't trade a guy until the new league year starts. So the bonus was set to force a decision before that. If you pay him the $28M, then trade him, the $28M is on your cap and out of your pocket.

ross (Fl)

RG3 stated he would be more than willing to sit behind Manning, if he stays. If Luck doesnt want to sit a year, do you think that would have any impact on who the colts draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

I hope not. You don't make choice based on things like that. You make them based on talent evaluation.

chris (Boston)

any chance mario williams doesnt resign with the texans? a lot of teams need pass rushers and he'd be a great pick up

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

Yeah, I think there is a good chance he winds up a free agent.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Do you suppose that Grigson could bring Howard Mudd back to the Colts under a new regime?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

Possible. But more likely in my estimation he'll want a more traditional line, not undersized, Mudd style.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

What is most likely to happen to Mario Williams? If he hits free agency do you think the Jags will pony up to get him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

I think they could be players for him, but they need to think offense first.

Adam (Cookeville, TN)

I have enjoyed your appearances on 104.5 the Zone this week for the Midday 180. Don't let them make you play the role of angry curmudeon all the time though.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

I am playing myself. You don't think they are handing me a script or coaching me, do you? They aren't.

Kevin (Knoxville)

How much, if any, do you think Manning's potential presence as the Colts' offensive leader will limit possible offensive coordiantor hires. I can't imagine that Peyton would want major changes in the offensive sytem.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Does the coach want power or does he want to win?

Mr. Curious George (Man with the Yellow Hat's house)

The Colts seem to have some serious problems that probably will not be solved with addition of Luck. So why isn't anyone focussing on them? I understand the need for a great qb, but teams win Super Bowls. What do the Colts need?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

Defensive backs. Maybe an adjusted defensive philosophy. Young playmakers.

Brian (Fishers, IN)

Is there any indication from Ryan Grigson's record with the Eagles concerning what sort of draft strategy he's likely to pursue? Is he the sort to take the best player available, or does he draft for need? Does he use a lot of stats to evaluate a player, or is he more likely to go with a scout's gut-level approach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Nobody, philosophically, comes out and says. "My think is to draft for need." Now if you're desperate at a position, will most guys feel 'Hey, I need a corner in the first three rounds?' Sure. But we don't know what his thinking will be.

Doug (Cincy)

Do you think the likely situation for the Colts is that they draft Luck, sit him for the year, and try to make one last Super Bowl run with Manning next season before turning it over to Luck the following season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I don't think they will be able to conclude they have Super Bowl talent in 2012.

Wade (Houston)

PK, My dad (Bum) says I should stay where I'm at, but I might have a job opportunity in Tampa Bay. What advice do you have for me, should I get offered the head coach position in TB? Should I go there, or stay here with the team I helped turn around in 1 year? BTW-I do think you resemble Bert!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

If they offer it, you'll take it.

mike (tn)

jason jones, finnegan , and griffin will any off the three be back in your opinion?im hoping finnegan!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Unlikely on all three. They could transition tag or franchise tag Finnegan.

Shad Kahn (My Yacht)

My biggest need is a WR, who should I open my fat wallet for in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Vincent Jackson.

Bob McNair (Reliant Stadium)

I hope you enjoyed your time here in Houston last weekend. After we take out another AFC North team and if Denver can upset New England we will galdly have you back here next weekend.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

Good luck getting both those result.

chris (Boston)

do you see the titans finally making a splash in FA? the team seems re-energized under munch. They were close to the playoffs this year and with another good draft and a few FA's i think they could make some noise in the playoffs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

Splash like a Chris Hope-David Thornton-Kevin Mawae type of haul. Yes. Splash in a biggest-names-in-free-agency? No.

Midge (Indy)

We're starting to get pretty excited here about the upcoming Super Bowl. Any chance you'll be here to ride the zipline?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

If Houston's there I will be there. Otherwise, we'll have to see what the bosses decide about wild card bloggers. Would like to be there as it's my market.

Eddie (Orlando, Fl)

I know you have no idea who the Jags OC will be. But do you think the Jags go after a QB coach who has a done good with work with a QB such as a Tom Clements from GB or somebody known as an up and coming offensive mind since they will be calling plays in Jax.

Miles (Austin, Tx)

Regarding your advice to Wade to take the TB job: WHAT?! He's an awful head coach, and that's not even a good job opening. It's not like he's never been a head coach before - he's tried and failed multiple times. Why can't he just settle into his role as DC? He's the best at that.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Who are we to tell him not to be a head coach if he wants to be and can be? Of course he's better as a DC. But this is America...

Awayne (INDY)

Eagles seemed to favor more athletic gamebreaker type skill guys than the precision guys the Colts have gone with.Do you that as the path the new GM will go on the offenseive side of the ball?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Who's the quarterback?

Bryan (Houston TX)

With TJ Yates playing well, do you think at some point he might move forward in the depth chart? Or maybe the texans will look to trade away. The texans also have Ben Tate, he deserves a good contract also. What do they do with both?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Enjoy good depth with guys under affordable contracts.

Rick Smith (Houston)

PK, last year I finally had my first successful draft...I'm starting to get the hang of this GM thing. Because I value the opinions of those closest to me, rank the top 3 positional needs for my team heading in to the off-season (which will not begin this Sunday).Your Bestie, Rick.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Nose tackle, corner, receiver.

Blake (Nashville)

Who will really be making the Colts HC call...Grigson or Irsay?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Combo. Jim Irsay isn't going to force Jim Caldwell on Grigson if Grigson wants someone else.

mike (tn)

the titans have added some prospects to future contracts, and two have caught my eye, duke robinson from the carolina panthers and will ta,ufo,ou a fb from chicago, what are your thought do you see either sticking through training camp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Guys who get futures contracts weren't even in the league at the end of 2011. If two make the final 53 in the entire league it's an upset.

Matt Leinhart (Houston)

Yo Kusky, I know you didn't get to see me play for very long, but based on my short-lived display, how do you think I compare to third-string bro, T.J. Yates? Would we have a better chance beating the Ravens if I was the one slinging the pigskin? Get at me, brah.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

I can't understand the number of Matt Leinart questions in here this week and last. Is there a family reunion going on in here? I think Yates is better. Leinart will be third at best in Houston if Matt Schaub is healthy.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

If Super Mario ends up FA, is it becasue he would want to land on a 4-3 team so he can play with his hand on the ground?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

It's because his contract is expiring.

Todd (Louisville)

I keep hearing that Manning is untradable due to the date of the bonus. Is it possible for the Colts to negotiate that date with an accelerated payment to result in a trade? I realize Manning would have to be agreeable.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

There is some debate as to whether moving the bonus by mutual agreement would be allowable.

David (Nashville)

If the Jags have a terrible year. What are the chances that JAX moves to LA and the Rams end up in the AFC South with Fisher as the coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

The Jaguars have a complicated lease that is hard to get out of. It would take them three years.

Weejay (Houston)

If TJ Yates (an incredibly talented and underrated kid) finishes the year strong with at least one more playoff win, how likely is he or Matt Schaub to become trade bait in the off-season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

Not at all likely.

Miles (Austin, Tx)

Of course Wade is welcome to pursue any job he wants, but isn't it disrespectful to the team to interview for it two days before the biggest game in franchise history?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

In my opinion, that's ridiculous. He's not missing anything. The Bucs are coming to him. It would be disrespectful for the Texans to have an issue with it, which they do not.

Adam (Charleston)

On the Titans defensive priority in '12 draft/free agency. Pass rush or run defense? Both were bad last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Can't they get guys who will help both? An edge pass rusher, though, has to be priority one to me.

justin (texas)

do u see the texans running alot off of play action and trying to acctack pollard giving his coverage is not so great?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Yes.

David (Maryland)

I know it's supposed to be a competition in camp, but your gut feeling: Locker or Hasselbeck next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

Hasselbeck at the start.

william (jax )

Who will the jags draft with the 7th round pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

A guy from a school most people don't know exists.

Benn in Katy (H-Town)

When do you plan to issue a retraction on your story about Duane Brown punching a Jags player when he clearly did not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

A) I don't care what he says, it was a punch. B) I put weight into the league's fine when that came down, and so I wrote an apology post when the reversal came down. Thanks for complaining instead of reading.

Bob (Nacogdoches)

PK, how come we get no respect on the national front? Everyone is talking about how the Ravens are gonna blow us out and then they move on to other games. What gives and what's YOUR take on that???

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

I hate when fans get obsessed with this issue. Why does the coverage (or perceived coverage) impact your enjoyment of your team's success?

Matt (Atlanta)

Aaron Rodgers at Cal: very quick release, extremely accurate, mobile. Kind of like Luck. Using 24th pick as a reason for him not being ready is the same as saying the Niners picked the right guy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

He needed a body rebuild, for one, which he got in his time as a backup.

rick (Houston)

PK with the focus of ravens on stopping arian an andre do u see walters and dreesen having career days against them on play action?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

They can stop more than one guy at the same time/ in the same game.

David (Nashville)

It's most likely Kenny Britt won't be his normal self at the beginning of next season. But, do you see the Titans trying to use him as a No. 2 and Washington as the No. 1 in the first month or so with a healthy dose of Cook? This should give Britt enough time to get used to being back after that ACL

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

If they are both on the field, it's not like one is designated as a No. 1 and the other as the No. 2. That's more a defense's choosing in terms of who gets what coverage.

David (Nashville)

If there is a good safety in the first three rounds, do the Titans jump at it? I like Babs, but Griffin and Hope have been less than stellar to say the least.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

They need at least one in the draft.

Adam (Charleston)

Very little follow-up or details about the Matt Shaub injury, at least that I've read. What's your take? I've heard that type of injury is quite serious. Should we expect to see more of Yates next year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

Very serious. Incremental rehab updates for a guy riding a care and in a boot don't really happen. They are hopeful he will be ready for opening day.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

We have a flag on Bob for playing the no respect card. 10 yard penalty and replay 2nd down.

Lucio (Houston)

It seems like DeMeco Ryans has played better as the season has gone on since recovering from his achilles injury. Do you feel like he has been better towards the end of the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

He has been. But he's also off the field a lot in nickel and dime.

Bob's Supporter (Nacogdoches)

Hey Kuharsky, just because you work for ESPN and they're on Tebow's bandwagon like no other you don't have to attack fans for annoying network coverage. Go tell your boys this is ridiculous. And seriously, why do you have a dislike towards Texans fans (Duane Brown issue)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

That I have a stance on Duane Brown that doesn't line up with the masses means I have a beef with Texans fans? Way to keep things in context and perspective.

Every Texans Fan (Houston)

You obviously hate the Texans and spend most of your waking life thinking of ways to disparage them. You have not written dozens of articles in recent months specifically praising them. It's clear you're a Tennessee shill, what with all of your glowing coverage of the Titans.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

In all most all instances I hesitate to say so. But you're practically begging me to say it: I think Texans fans may be the biggest whiners in the NFL. Yeah, that was a glowing piece yesterday on how the Titans botched the Jason Jones move. And my column on Houston's stars shining in the Texans' playoff win just crushed them.

Doug (MD)

Was Grigson in charge of all the FA signings in Philly this year? Could that philosophy come over to the Colts? That'd be different. That was good salary cap management, I'd say. Excited for the next few seasons!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

No. He wasn't the GM or the coach. They signed good players who didn't mesh well or play well. The cap management has been very good.

Alshon Jeffrey (combine training)

How good will Blaine Gabbert look throwing to me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

A lot better.

Chacko (Houston, TX)

Don't the Texans have the option of applying the franchise tag on Mario Williams rather than letting his contract expire? Why would they not resign and trade him or apply the franchise tag rather than let him walk and not get anything in return?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Tag would be $16 million. They can't pay him $16 million next year. That's a cap crusher.

william (jax )

should the jaguars re-sign Jeremy Mincey?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

He's a guy who should be rewarded.

Andrew (Wichita, KS)

Will Hawk and Donnie Avery be Titans next season? Wouldn't it make more sense to get some younger talent with more upside to fill their spots?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Maybe Lavelle Hawkins, not Donnie Avery. Hawkins is young. He's finally starting to do something, and you want to replace him with a young guy who would need to build up from scratch?

Nate (Indy)

I know teams are not allowed to publicly comment on college players before the draft. Are the Colts allowed to contact Luck or his agent before the draft in order to better develop a strategy for him and Peyton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

They are allowed to talk about seniors. Once he declares, they can approach him, I believe.

Adam (Charleston)

Has Hochuli ever ejected an entire fan base from a chat room before? Houston fans are making a case for it today.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

I think the TItans need to go WR in one of the first 2 rounds unless they sign someone in FA. Britt has missed time in each of his first 3 seasons and they need someone who can make up for his loss. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

They need to enhance receiver depth for sure.

Vince Young (Not in Tenn)

Paul doesn't love everything the Titans have done.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

First sensible thing this guy has said in some time.

Colin McCarthy (Nashville)

Paulie, what do you think my chances of being a long term and productive foundation of the defense are?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

You are a very good player. I think the question will be about your ability to stay healthy.

Midge (Indy)

What position do you think Indy picks in 2nd round--WR, CB, DL...or other?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Corner is biggest concern in my eyes, but you can't force the pick into the round if it's not there.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Was Amano a good guard or did he just benefit from playing with other guys on the line who were stellar?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

He benefited from playing next to Kevin Mawae for sure.

Cameron (Asheville)

How loud/hostile is M&T bank stadium? I cant remember it being in the catagory of something like the superdome.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Places without roofs rarely compare to places with them.

James (Indy)

I have always hated the Ravens fans babbling on about how Indy stole their team, but after seeing how much Texans fans whine I now am force to chear for Baltimore this weekend.

James (WI)

Can we refrain from calling Blaine Gabbert a bust please? Not all rookies are Cam Newton, in fact, usually the opposite is true.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Agree.

Ethan (Houston)

If I complain about bias against Houston and stuff like that to get my question noticed, will you chastise me in chat and then answer my question on whether you like Schaub vs the Ravens or T.J. and Andre vs the Ravens

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

It's a really good question. I think I'd rather have Schaub. But it's a tough call.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Just wanted to say that I really enjoy your chats. Keep up the great work!

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

Check is in the mail. Thank you all for coming. Enjoy the games!
